5-0 out of 5 stars Great toy, fantastic results
The good:

Impeccable results - The photos are printed on high quality photo paper, just as if they came from a photo lab.Ease of use is (mostly) a snap - installation and printing is simple as pie.Color reproduction and detail is dead on.Printing speed is good.I couldn't be happier with the results it produces.

Cost - $150 for the printer is dirt cheap and you can grab a 100 print supply pack for $38, which works out to .38 per print. That's about double what you pay for digital prints at a store. But the .38 seems reasonable for all the enjoyment and coolness of printing your own photos, not to mention the convenience.

Design - It's a nice looking piece of equipment.A bit large in my opinion, but it's a welcome addition to my desktop.Build quality seems fine thus far, with no cheap looking or problematic components, but I'd need to own it for a few years before really speaking to the overall build quality.

The bad:

Color reproduction.Wait, didn't I just say the results were impeccable?Well, yes, they are.But figuring out how to get those results took me about five test prints.Plus I own a Mac (OS X 10.3) which makes monitor calibration a snap, have a decent idea of what I'm doing, and am printing with a good program (Photoshop Elements).I'm afraid some users might become frustrated when printing, as the colors just aren't going to come out as they do on screen unless the monitor's colors are properly calibrated and the print options are set correctly. The manual isn't much help here because the number of variables involved is astronomical.

Misleading packaging - Says it comes with everything you need to start printing immediately.Lie!IF your camera is Pictbridge enabled, this is true.Mine's not, so I have to use the computer. This requires a USB cable that is not included with the printer.

Verdict:

On the whole I love the thing and would reccommend it to anyone with the ability and/or patience to get it set up properly.Once you're at the point, it's photo heaven.

Read on for a few basic tips.I'm using an iMac G4 with OS X 10.3.

1.Calibrate your monitor!Find a good utility (one may have come with your computer or be available with your video card driver).Maybe XP has color calibration built in.I wouldn't know. You want 1.8 target gamma. This is standard on Macs.PC standard is 2.2.

2.Printing:Get a decent photo program.Might I reccommend Adobe Photoshop Elements?Easy to use, powerful, great for printing. It's $80, but you get what you pay for. Also, when you print, be sure you're using procedural intent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent printer - used 9 hours a dayfor 8 days!
Purchased this printer versus a Sony due to name brand issues.

WORKS like a champ! We are printing:

On average: 90 prints a day for a 9 hour day * 9 days = 810 prints so far.

It has never jammed.

I have had fairly good luck buying the printer cartridge/paper (40 sheets or 100 sheet / pack) in NYC.Prices for the 40 print pack: $17.00 at J and R to as much as $25.00 at Compusa Midtown. Amazon sells the 100 print pack are $30.00 (through Adorama).

Print cartridge is easy to change (takes seconds).

Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac OS compatible. Best of all Archival Quality.
One of the previous reviewers states that this was not Mac OS compatible. It is compatible with OS 10.3. I tried it with several computers using OS 10.2.8 and it did not work. Even called customer support. No dice. I think that they tried writing another driver for 10.2.8 but it still did not work. I upgraded to 10.3 and it works great.

There have been many comments about the colors being off. I have used this with 3 Macs and the colors are right on. There may be a slight problem with the brightness but otherwise the colors are well approximated. I noticed that those who complained were using Windows. Color management may be a little trickier on a Wintel than a Mac. I would consider calling customer support of either the computer maker or that of Olympus.

Ctein of Photo Techniques reviewed the P400 about 2 years ago. He had only praises for the prints. But the best part about the print is it's archival quality. Dye Sublimation with an overcoat apparently has a track record for good archival quality. Meaning it will not fade and will maintain it's image quality given certain parameters of humidity, heat, and light exposure. This is a same process that Kodak uses. I do not see the point of printing something only for it to fade on you a few years later. There a lot of claims of archival quality among other printer makers but personally, I do not know how true they are and if they have been proven.

Image quality is great. I really looks like a regular print from a photo processing shop. Colors are crisp and they are continous tone. No pixilation or lines to speak of at all. I have only been using it for snapshots printed from iphoto. I have not used adobe photoshop yet. I can't wait. Have not used it with pictbridge.

Basically, the lost star was for initially stating Olympus would not support the Mac OS then turn around and make a non-working driver for 10.2

2-0 out of 5 stars Printer is OK, but What if there are Problems?
The printer is OK.Its 6X4 prints are adequate.Colors are vibrant even if they are not quite true, and the entire system is easy to use. With so many upsides, there must be a few downsides to rate only two stars! The first is simply that if something goes wrong, the only recourse is to send it back to the manufacturer for maintenance. As the company does not pay for packing or shipping, you must pay the full bill. This policy includes problems for a printer during its first package of paper! There is no user maintenance available. The second problem is the printer's use of color management. As another reviewer noted, what you see is not what you get.He claimed that his black and whites were sepia toned.Mine are blue tinted -- just a hint. This is because I cannot fully control the gray scales via color management software.Technical support in this area was totally non-existant.Olympus should have paid more attention to color management and at least designed the printer for a particular color management scheme (such as sRBG or Adobe 1998, or ...).
While the color management problem might be considered "only for the professional", most people will not too happy when the colors they see on the screen are not what they get on the print. This is the case with the P-10.However, the lack of user maintenance and the lack of product support make this product a potentially poor choice among home consumers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the serious
The P-10 is an adequate printer. If you base all that on the cost per picture, ease of use, and general quality. The down sides are more technical, but add up in the end.

First there is not XP digital signature; that cause my system to hang a couple of time when installing the driver.

IT DOES NOT PRINT WHAT COLORS ARE ON THE SCREEN.I am not just talking adjustment of contrast, brightness, or such.We are talking significant color shifts. If you are using an aim and shoot camera, it will probably be ok.If you use any program to adjust the picture, just be ready for some frustration.

In the end, when I was done, tweaking the pictures and the printer to get a print that was pleasing to the eye, the cost went up.I would print an average of four prints just to get the one I wanted.

In all honesty, I probably should have started with a higher end to begin with. This is adequate if you are not that meticulous about your photos. The colors are deep and vibrant; a very nice sharp and detail finish. It will not do well with Black and White. You end up with a sepia tint.

If cost is not that much of an issue, start with the Canon CP-330. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and it works!
I couldn't ask for a cheaper printer and it works just fine. HP is a reliable brand and it's easy to find their cartridges. For light volume print jobs, this is what you want.

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible service
My wife and I wasted hours and hours trying to get HP service. HP has outsourced customer service to several developing countries, and each time we called, the representatives were unable to locate the record of our previous call. We were told time and again that we would be contacted by a "case manager" but that never happened. After weeks of trying, it became obvious that we need to discard the product (still under warrantee) and buy a new (non-HP) product ourselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I bought this printer primarily for black only text. That it does well and, it prints Avery labels perfectly. I'm impessed with it's compact size. I also ownHP7960 and HP1115 photo printers. These are what prompted me to buy the 3845. It would be a perfect entry level low dollar printer. One advantage of HP printers is the print head is in the cartidge. So, when you replace a cartridge you replace the print head.

3-0 out of 5 stars Small Cartridges
I am a student and prefer to print out reasearch for future reference, the main problem with this printer is that it goes through cartridges like nobody's business. I guess selling cartridges is where HP makes up for the moderate price of the actual printer. I would rather pay a little more for cartridges that last more than two weeks, other than that it is a fine printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great printer for the home
I've had this printer for several months now, and thus far, have been very happy with it.I don't print out a high volume of documents, so both the price and printer fit my needs perfectly.

I tend to only print out various Word documents and/or website pages, and the speed is not bad.I have also printed out some digital pictures, and they turned our surprisingly sharp. While you could tell they were printed pictures (compared to something like Ofoto), they are nice enough that you could hang around the house.I wouldn't use this printer primarily for digital pictures, however. While the quality is okay, it's not great enough that I'd want *all* of my photos to be from this printer.

My only minor complaint is that the cartridges haven't lasted me as long as the previous HP printer I had. After three months, I had to replace the cartridges which seems fast. It's one of the main reasons why I recommend not using this for digital pictures (not to mention I'm sure there are better quality printers out there that are geared towards digital photographs). So, yes, this would be fine for printing out pictures - occasionally, yes, but not frequently.

One small thing that I like is it prints pages in reverse chron order, page 3, page 2, then page 1.My previous printer printed them page 1 first, page 2, etc., so I had to shuffle through the papers and reorder them.Yes, a minor issue, but it was annoying if you printed more than 10 pages or so.

Overall, I would recommend this printer for the person who doesn't need to print a high volume of documents (or digital photos). For the home computer user like me, it's perfect. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little printer
Great little photo printer. Prints like a photo lab. Get your ink online from Costco for 1/2 price.

2-0 out of 5 stars SHOCKED
DS700 PRINTED GOOD PICTURES TILL THE INK TANK RAN OUT AFTER 25 PICTURES. CANON ESTORE WAS THE ONLY PLACE TO FIND THESE VERY EXPENSIVE LITTLE TANKS (22.95 PLUS 7.99 SHIPPING) WISHED I BOUGHT THE HP PRINTER INSTEAD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 4x6 photo printer
My friend got the Canon Selphy photo printer for Christmas. We were set up and printing in 5 minutes. The photos print right to the edge (no borders) and are crisp and beautiful. Also, I loved hooking it up to the front of the TV - so easy to scan through and print!Makes printing less of an "event."If you're looking for a printer that prints different sizes (i.e. 5x7 or 8x10), this isn't the printer for you.I like it because it prints out "normal sized" prints (4x6) with ease. I liked it so much, I'm going to buy one for myself today. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very buggy
something is always freezing, not working, or conflicting.also, a slow machine.go for something newer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trash
This machine is a constant frustration.Out of the box, the software is buggy and has never worked right.Tech support is poor, and they are able to do little more than parrot the instructions that come with the machine.Constantly jams when sending faxes, freezes up when sending large faxes, and has never successfully scanned an item.I operate a small business and thought this machine would cover several bases at once, but have been constantly disappointed.HP should be ashamed for putting this garbage on the market.

2-0 out of 5 stars Buggy Software
So mom needed help scanning and e-mailing some documents. No problem. Hit the "scan" button on the OfficeJet, and go, right? Wrong. Hitting the button would bring up an HP splash screen on the computer, but it froze there. Lesson learned: the "scan" button on the machine is useless.

Then we went into the "HP Photo # Imaging Gallery" software. It worked for 3 scans, but on the 4th one, it appeared to scan fine, but the document file never showed up in the gallery window.

We tried it with another scanning application, and again it appeared to scan fine, but the software never received the data. No error, nothing.

I tried downloading a "critical update" for the HP software, and it arrived as an executable WinZip file. Unfortunately, it tried to unpack to a directory on C: but the computer in question doesn't have a C: drive, so the WinZip self-extractor said "Drive c is not a valid drive, unzip operation canceled" and exited.

Anyway, I then noticed the link that lets HP analyze your system for needed upgrades, but it found that the driver for the OfficeJet was up-to-date.

My HP Scanjet also 3300C has funny drivers. They don't like it when I disconnect power to the scanner before "disconnecting" the scanner in Windows. I think it used to crash Windows, before I upgraded the drivers. Now it merely complains. But it shouldn't complain at all!

Also, my uncle tried getting the fax part to work, but he hit an unresolvable problem (I don't remember what it was).

At work, we also use a different model of OfficeJet for faxing. That has problems feeding paper, and it just doesn't work as well as the Brother machine that sits beside it.

From now on, I can't recommend any HP device with a scanner, due to the poor quality of the drivers. But to be honest to myself and HP, I still like my Deskjet 970CSE. And the OfficeJet 6110 prints fine, which is why I give this 2 stars instead of 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Multifunction Printer
I pruchased this unit so I could make copies for Sunday School and do light faxing and scanning.I have to use the unit increasingly for scanning documents into my computer.

So far, I have had no problems to report on this unit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Took It Back For A Refund Just In Time
I bought this one because I wanted the flat glass for the copy function. However, it wasn't worth it. This printer tries to do too much, is cheaply made, and has a user-unfriendly menu. The software is full of bugs. You will be spending many hours trying to figure things out and calling India where customer service seems to be located. I was very lucky to get it back to the store within ten days for a full refund. And as you might figure, the store was a pain in the neck and said that they couldn't believe that I was having trouble with this model. Duh! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Canon i960
The Canon i960 is the Canon digital Rebel of the printer world. It has a very competative price and will challenge the features and performance of most other higher priced printers. The design is sleek and simple with easy to use features and easy loading cartriges (6 of them), it also has the 'PictBridge' sysem which allows you to print without uploading on to your computer. It's fairly quiet and prints relatively quickly. All of the colours come out true and sharp, but occasionally mid blacks come out flat and without depth. Overall I reccomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome printer
I've owned this printer for about 8 months now and must say it prints flawlessly everytime. I've printed over 600 4x6 pictures so far on Canon paper and they always look as good as they do on my computer! I really believe this is one of the best photo printers out there and highly recommend it. When it comes time to buy a new on, I'm still sticking with Canon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Color and Value
I just received my printer yesterday as a gift and it's the best one I've owned, hands down.I've printed an array of images from 4x6 to 8x11 and all of them are excellent.I also have a Canon PowerShot camera so I was able to start printing pictures without hooking it up to the PC.The detail is amazing and the colors are very vivid.Definately will be recommending this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
IMO: I was really turned off of ink jet printers after having owned and then thrown away my Epson 780. The print quality on this machine was spectacular...for the 1% of the time the heads were not clogged.

So I waited a few years, hoping that technology would improve. The Canon i960 got good reviews, and hardly anyone complained about clogged heads, and the unit was being discontinued so prices have dropped to an attractive level.

Print quality is as good as it goods, no question. No missing lines or other artifacts. I have one complaint though, because the colour tone is very slightly yellow, noticeable on skin tones. I had to go to manual colour correction and reduce the amount of yellow by 10 points (out of a possible 40 points). The advanced options give you colour correction "pro" and it seems to add a slight amount of colour saturation but it reduces detail in the blacks very slightly. I print mostly using matte paper because it gives the best dark colour performance (gloss paper tends to wash out blacks leaving you with one shade of black) and you can put the print next to glass, whereas with gloss, contacting glass with ruin the print and also give you a smudge mark on the glass. The very slight yellow on default software settings resulted in me giving four instead of five stars.

The unit is very quiet. Just a very soft swooshing sound as the head moves back and forth. No need to use quiet mode.

Quality construction. Yes, it's made of plastic but the build quality is very good. Some have complained about having to remove shipping tape. So what? You only have to remove it when it's out of the box. Lots of products require removal of shipping tape.

You can use non-Canon paper, but results will vary with paper so you will need to experiment. I got excellent results with Epson photo matte paper, actually better than Canon's own glossy paper samples that came with the printer.

Don't worry about printing directly to the printer. You will want to run your pics though a computer to get the software colour correction. I tried printing with no software correction and the colour tone wasn't very good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much "red" or "blue".
I bought the i960 last year.It will print "nature" photos very well -- nature like animals at the zoos. When it comes to printing photos with people, there is entirely too much magenta in the skintones. There is entirely too much cyan in clothing items in the photos of people.I am not as pleased with it as I thought I would be.I am researching other photo printer brands. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Photo lab quality at home
This cp-220 printer was easy to set up and print photo lab quality pictures right on my kitchen table, without my computer. Only one concern: I wish that the 4x6 paper did not have the post card lines/address/stamp on the back.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
So far I am very happy with the printer. The prints look like they were done at a professional lab. The only thing I wish is that I could buy the ink and the paper separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, except for ink messages
THis printer rocks. As a PC consultant, I don't like HP PCs because of their software.I have seen them blow up numerous operating systems, plus HP installs software by the shovelful and gives the user no control over if they want it.
This printer has reasonable software, the image quality is awesome, really amazing. The photos compared to my HP 812C are just amazing.Printing on the 4x6 paper it is finally indistinguishable from a real photo.IT is a bit loud, but I slowed it down using the software driver which made a huge difference.(night mode they call it?).Individual ink cartridges will save lots of cash.

My ONLY complaint it that they warn you when the liquid ink is out, but there is still tons left soaked into the fibers in the resevoir.I printed over 100 pages after getting the first message about black ink - getting the dam pop up message every time.

2-0 out of 5 stars DON'T EXPECT QUALITY TEXT PRINTING
Apparently, this printer's forte is photo printing. I made the mistake of assuming it would print quality text documents too, which seems a much simpler task.I am very disappointed in the frequent ink smears, streaks, and blotches on the pages. It takes frequent cleaning procedures to minimize the streaks and blotches.I am incredulous that the ink smears when a highlighter pen is used on the text. This happens on pages with dry ink that were printed many months earlier!Highlighter pens seem to dissolve the dried ink.Periodically, during printing jobs, including the first page, the printer goes through some internal activity that can be frustrating when trying to print something quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars best printer you can get in this price range
I love to print off picturs I take with my digital camera. This one does them professionally and fast.I Love the separate ink cartriges also.I'm blown away with the features. You will love it so don't hesitate, if you need a printer that does photos this one is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I picked up this printer a few months ago, and it has exceeded my expectations. The photos that it has printed are fantastic.Honestly, it's hard to tell the difference between pictures printed on this printer from those you get from a photo processor. The printing of normal documents, web pages, etc. is good, but not great (it's a bubble jet printer, and the documents look like those that you typically get from a bubble jet).I got this printer for two primary printing purposes:(1) photos, and (2) basic documents for my own use.It excels at photos and is adequate for basic document printing (I wouldn't use it to print documents for work - laser printers are better for that - but it is fine for my own personal use).Yeah, you could get better document printing from more expensive printers, but if you're looking for a home printer that will let you print some documents for yourself and to print your photos extremely well, it's hard to beat the value of this printer. In fact, if you print a lot of photos, this printer could easily pay for itself in no time. For about $100, it's hard to imagine a better value for a home printer.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS PRINTER SUCKS
After years of using HP printers and spending a fortune on ink refills and cartridges a friend suggested I try a Canon printer. At the time a color cart. for my HP 970 was around $50.00.

As far as the savings on ink and cartridges, switching to a Canon printer was the best decision I ever made. I do a LOT of printing and the individual tanks and the ability to refill each is great! Plus, I haven't had to buy another cartridge since. I don't print photos but I do a ton of text printing and have to refill the black ink at least once a week even in the economy mode.

My first Canon was a i550, which I simply wore out. I have no complaints about the i550 since I saved many times the price of the printer on ink refills & cartridges.

When shopping for a new printer I saw all of the rave reviews about the i860 so I decided on that model. What a disappointment! Maybe its a great printer for photos but when it comes to text printing, IT'S A NIGHTMARE. The best thing you could do with this printer is to beat it to death with a ball bat and go buy something else. This printer has one paper jam after another, after another. I don't use cheap paper but I also don't buy the high priced specialty paper either. I use a good quality 20 lb. paper made for ink jet printers by Georgia-Pacific. Its the same paper I've used in the HP's and the Canon i550 without any problems.

Some genius at Canon that helped develop the i860 came up with the idea to place a rubber wheel in the paper feed tray to pull the paper down into the machine. The problem is, with only one wheel, on one side, it grabs the paper and pulls it down into the machine at an angle. The machine does have a quick shut off when this happens so the paper doesn't jam up inside, but paper jams occur CONSTANLY! One after the other!

Canon says to use a higher quality, thicker paper around 24 lbs. or more. Great! Now I have to spend the money I'm saving on ink to buy expensive paper. No wonder Canon pulled this model out of production so quickly! ... Read more

Hewlett-Packard's CP1700 printer combines wide-format print capabilities with a space-saving design ideally suited for small work areas. Providing both outstanding detail and extremely flexible options, this inkjet easily earns its keep in the home office.

Print speeds exceed those of a typical home printer, with the CP1700 churning out monochrome documents at 16 pages per minute and 14 pages per minute in color. 1-0 out of 5 stars Agree, it dies in less than a year
I have the same experience as the people above, it runs for some months, begins to squeak and then dies. The carrage seems to be jammed and I can't even get it to turn off.I used to be a loyal HP customer now I will avoid them whenever possible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go to Epson
The CP1700 just absolutely died on me and simply wouldn't run anymore. This is the third HP printer I have had and the third time the same thing has happened.
Paper feeding problems galore and no response from HP when I inquired. The quality of HP printers has declined drastically. Anyone who tells you anything different is a con artist. I run a printing/publishing business, so I do know what I am talking about. For a small desktop, wide format printer, I have gone to the Epson 1280. What a beautiful printer. Even the cost of cartidges is much better than HP's. No wonder HP is in trouble!

1-0 out of 5 stars Run away
Listing the litany of problems that I've had with this printer would probably exceed the word limit of this text box.Definately one of the worst computer peripheral decisions that I have ever made. This printer was instrumental in helping me formulate my decision to NEVER buy another HP product again. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BUY THIS PRINTER.DON'T DO IT.

1-0 out of 5 stars hp cp 1700 failed for no reason
WARNING!!! Do not buy this printer. When new it works great but from other comments I've read and from my own experience, this printer has no durability and HP doesn't want to help.I got this printer to print maps in large format sizes.I hardly used the printer for anything else over the past two years.Recently I replaced the print heads due to very poor print quality and no color reproduction. The printer stopped working after that and HP technical support couldn't help me.They offered me a trade-in deal for a refurbished printer (same model) for $380.00 or a new CP 1700 for an "upgrade" price of $499.00 plus I would have to send them my printer.Of course, I could send it in to have it repaired in 7 - 10 days for $275.00.Whatever your needs, don't do it.Don't buy this printer.Shame on HP for making such a poor product and not standing behind their products! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Canon better than generic
I have a Canon Multipass MP700 and the printer runs great!
The canon ink cartridges are easy to install and the quality of the inks produce great photos and cards.
I would never purchase generic inks, whose inks might clog up my printer. It isn't worth the risk of messing up my printer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with i560
Do NOT buy this product if you have an i560. That model is not listed on the packaging. Amazon's search engine will incorrectly point to this product if you use the term "canon i560 ink" as I did. I had to send it back. Avoid the hassle by not buyinig this item if you have an i560.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth using the original
As previously said, nothing beats OEM materials when quality matters; especially since Canon makes better than average inks and papers.I not only had poor results with off-brand inks before, but actually had much shorter catridge life as well.

The only beef I've had is that they use the same model number (BCI-3e) for both the photo and non-photo versions.THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGABLE!I got photo ink for my i850 by mistake and the results were horrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT the ink for Canon i560!!!!
These inks come up in a search on amazon for the Canon i560 inks, but this is not correct. The i560 uses the BJC-6Y, M, and C color cartridges and the BJC-3eBk for the black. I would not buy generic ink for this printer. It looks terrible. You get what you pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the extra dollars
I use the Canon BCI-3e ink cartridges for my Canon i900 photo printer and the results are very good. I tried the more inexpensive generic inks, but noticed a decrease in quality for prints, especially photo prints. It is definitely worth the few extra dollars to use these original Canon inks, and buying the 4-packs makes sense, since any cartridge can run out at any time. The 4-pack means I'll always have a spare when I need one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe It
Just because there is no official "Windows XP" badge on the printer or the Microsoft web site does not mean the printer "is not XP compatible". That just means Microsoft has tested it and certified it for the particular OS. I have owned many HP printers and have found them to be the most reliable. My only issue has been cartridge cost but after having owned a Canon printer with separate color tanks, I'll stick with HP. As a previous poster stated about an Epson, you spend most of the time cleaning print heads. The poor sales guy at BestBuy was correct to say that the HP was trouble free. Of course this is a generality but for the most part, they are. I used to sell printers and the ratio of HP returns to other brands was wide. I would test returned merchandise and find that most items were fine. The problems are usually with the user or the user's computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fool-Proof Printing
We're running Windows 98SE and the install went just fine.I love this compact reliable printer. We originally had an HP722C and after many years of service it wore out and we got an Epson C82.The Epson printers have the print heads incorporated into the printer itself while HP has them in the ink cartridge. With HP you get fresh heads with every cartridge change but with Epson you clean and clean. We were constantly cleaning the Epson print heads and they would always choke at an inopportune moment. It's such a relief to have this HP unit that just prints reliably every time. While the Epson has multiple color cartridges, they all seemed to empty at about the same time anyway so having just a tri-color cartridge for HP is just fine. The Epson had only one economy mode and you could hardly read the text. The HP offers a usable economy print mode that saves ink, prints fast, and is still very readable.

I'll add that for serious photo printing, I still use the local photo printer but for the everyday 3X5 or 4X6 for the desk at work the HP does an outstanding job even without the special photo-printing cartridge.

My only criticism is that when you display the print status, the page count is off.It will show 60 of 12 instead 6 of 12 which can be a bit unnerving. Otherwise, for basic trouble-free printing, this one can't be beat for the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but print problems
I bought two of these machines in January - one for my home office, one for my daughter going to college.Mine was fine, but my daughter's print quality turned poor after about a week.We jumped through all the cleaning hoops and even bought a new cartridge, and it was OK for a bit and then went bad again.I swapped her machine out for mine, brought hers back here, cleaned again and it was OK.For awhile, then the print quality went south again. Did the online support chat thing with HP, and they determined my printer was bad.Send a refurbished replacement, and I installed my cartridges from the original machine.Print quality still bad.Went out and bought ANOTHER new cartridge, and it was fine.Yesterday.Today, the print quality is bad again.HP chat support again, jump through the cleaning hoops again, print quality OK.HOW FRUSTRATING IS THAT?As I've already spent more on ink cartridges than the printer cost, I'm getting ready to throw this in the junk and go buy an Epson or something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value - Don't Forget to buy a USB Cable
We bought this about three months ago for typical home use and it has worked great. It is small, fast and quiet. The buttons on the front of the machine are very basic (On/Off, clear jam, cancel print and an indicator for ink level in each of the two cartridges). We are using this on an older PC that runs WIndows 98.The setup was a breeze, but you have to buy the USB cable separately. The software that comes with the printer is pretty standard.Black and white documents are clean and color documents come out good but not good enough to print high-end photos. For the price this is a great value for home use. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I've had this printer for a lot of time. It's really cool and really econimal because no matter the cartriges are almost empty it will print like if the cartriges were new.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
Good looking printer. After warranty expired it's the only one positive thing I can tell about it. It doesn't work properly, prints have no straight vertical lines, some strange noises are coming from it, no way of printing photos. It visited service twice. I had a DJ690c in the past and after 5 years of use the only thing to replace was one small thing in paper feeder. DJ5550 is a piece of junk.

2-0 out of 5 stars Died after warranty expired
I previously had a 722c HP Printer that worked like a miracle. It lasted forever. Actually it still works, but it just got too slow so I bought the 5550. It worked great initially, but just shortly after 1 year, it went nuts. All its lights would flash and nothing was working properly. So now its just sitting there in my room. Its pretty disappointing since I expected all HPs to be of the same quality as the 722c. Too bad.

2-0 out of 5 stars Died after warranty expired
Printed great for a little over a year (the duration of the warranty) and then it quit and just flashed all it's lights at us. We're told by a printer repair tech that the logic board is dead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok printer
This printer is ok... It prints usually pretty good, and the cartirges last a long time if you know what you are doing, and don't use the printer all the time. The bad part of this printer is that it jams at the slightest imperfection in the paper. I just had it ruin two sheets of photo paper because the corner was a little bent. I even made sure it fed the non bent corner first, and it still jamed after printing just a little bit. I would reconmend this to anyone who needs a simple printer that won't let you down. Just make sure your paper is perfect. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this printer
This is actually the first time I've every filled out a rating on a product.I'm usually too busy to take the time. But my experience with this printer was so poor, I felt it my duty to warn others.I have now purchased and returned 3 of them.So I know it's not me -- it's the printer. It prints visible lines through the pages (probably a misalighnment of the printer heads) and also prints off-center (prints the image too high on the page).I've tested the same files on the same computer with different printers and they all printed fine on the other printers.I desperately wanted the 1200 to work b/c of it's large ink reservoirs -- I print a lot and am tired of changing ink every day. After trying 3 different 1200s, and with the same negative issues with all, I have to assume that the product line overall is defective.STAY AWAY! ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!
I am a senior software developer at a healthcare IT company. Our customers requested a specific type of report which needed to be printed on 11x17 paper. We had no such printer in-house.
I did some research, found this printer at HP, ordered it from
Amazon and had it in my hands in 2 days.It took about 20 minutes to hook up and I had my 11x17 report which I can now forward on to my customers. The service was incredible and the printer is perfect for my needs!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
Not the best printer on the planet, but definitely a good value.I don't need a color laser or a photo printer, so it works for me.

Print quality is good for schematics, drafting, and other vector based images.Much better than a more expensive Cannon that I am replacing.I haven't tried it on any raster images, and probably never will.I also have no idea what kind of photo printing capabilities it has, because I just don't care.

Setup is very easy, it took me a total of a half hour to unpack the printer, assemble it, run cords, install the drivers on the host PC (which has the same speed processor as the printer), and install the drivers on another PC, and have the whole thing networked.Everything worked fine right out of the box on the first try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop! Don't buy this Printer!
I got this printer for large format printing. What I got was a large format headache. I spent an entire day trying to install this following all the instructions, I even called HP and they couldn't help me. I was using all the specified equipment, however one thing they didn't warn me about was you cannort share this printer without the additional purchase of the HP network server. After boxing this up for return I also noticed that this printer had already been returned once. It had two packing slip pouches, mine and someone else's. Bottom line - DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!! It cost me a day of work and all the shipping charges.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this printer!!!
I needed a large format printer for my small business, so I got online and reviewed seveal hp printers, and I "chatted" with one of their online reps. I was told this was the best printer for my needs. Little did I know that in order to use it I would have to redo my entire network setup. Well, after a full day of trying everything they told me to do, I am MORE than happy to PAY TO SHIP IT BACK!!!

Take graphics, text, clip art, logos, signatures, even photos, and turn them into professional-quality rubber stamps. Or choose from the 150 preformatted designs that come with this unit. Once your design is established it will take about one minute to transpose into an actual rubber stamp surface. Choose from 11 different stamp sizes. The preinked stamps you create mean no separate messy inkpads. Re-inking bottles of nontoxic, nonflammable, and quick-drying ink make refilling and printing quick and clean. Choose from four different colors--black, red, blue, and green--to make your creation.

The rubber stamps are designed with microporous control so you get the same amount of ink transfer with each impression. They're durable so they will take heavy, repeated application. At first this machine looks promissing. But the software support is bad. It has a problem with the serial connection. Plus the image editing software needs more improvements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
This mahine is a great addition to my profit centers in my small business.Since I have purchased I no longer need to out source my stamp business. This machine is easy to use and works every time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Money maker!!!
This machine has saved me so much time and money! This machine creates high quality stamps far superior to stamps that I have been previously ordering that take 2-3 weeks.I can now make my own stamps in house and at a cost 1/5th of what I was paying to have stamps made.I have owned this machine for over 9 Mo. and have had no issues.Brother does provides a support phone # specifically for this machine and supported me wonderfully with the one simple question I did have.

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 years later
I bought this almost 5 years ago and it still works.the ink is too expensive, and the paper doesn't always feed right, but I've gone through a lot of other printers in the same period of time and this is the only one I still have and use. I travel with it and it gets banged around and has been dropped several times and otherwise abused.I was recently looking for a replacement--thinking that there should be something as good that is new and cheaper, but I was disappointed in everything I saw and I'm just going to keep using this one.It prints just fine (with some help) and is reliable.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
I bought this printer because I travel a lot.The first time I used it, it printed only half a page. After repeated requests for help, I got it to print --- quit working almost exactly to the date that the warranty ran out.Canon not helpful at all.I am looking for another portable printer but it will not be a Canon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little printer
This is a great little printer. It is a little slow but its quality is great. It is quite small and compact, perfect for a traveling business man.All in all this is a great printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Going Strong Two Years Later ...
I have nothing but good things to say about the BJC-80.I've had it for two years, use it almost daily (mostly for color graphics printing) and it's still going strong. It travels well and is very convenient to use. Black and white print quality is excellent and color print quality is outof this world.I have the battery pack and use infrared with my Thinkpadnotebook (something about wireless printing that can really impress aclient!).I also use the scanning adapter - works fine on the road, but Iprefer a flatbed scanner for most jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A versatile, rugged and economical portable printer
My company sells Home Inspection software (Palm-Tech Inspector) and many of our inspectors have commented on how much they like the Canon BJC-80. It is light, easy to carry, and has a good page feeder. In our tests, theBJC-80 averages 150-170 pages of full text per mono cartridge in draftmode. Its color graphics are good for a portable printer. Infraredcommunication is a little slower than its competition, but as a cabledsolution it is untouchable.

We at Palm-Tech reccomend the BJC-80 to ourclients every day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MACHINE
I looked long and hard before I committed to a printer. I wanted something that printed things out fast and did a good job on photos. This unit does both, and very well I might ad.
I like the sleekness of lines, the solid appearance and the weight. This is NOT a small printer. It's moderate in size. Not tiny, but not a monster either. I suggest you take a look at its measurements, and where you plan to put it. That might be important to you.
Many out there are just too light and flimsy, and wobble when they print.Anyway, this thing is quiet, VERY FAST and is capable of using 6 ink colors for BORDERLESS photos. It takes all sized of paper, envelopes and this baby COMES WITH A DUPLEXER AND SECOND PAPER TRAY. WHAT A VALUE RIGHT THERE.
The Duplexer for my old Photosmart 1215 ran $80.00 alone.
Anyway, This thing will save you in paper. Two pages ( front and back) on one sheet automatically. Great for People who do brochures, greeting cards, multi page reports, recipes, newsletters, etc.Did I mention it's QUIET???This thing is so fast if you dont extend the paper stop on the paper tray, it shoots out like a rocket. I'm using Windows XP Pro and it was a SNAP to install. No problems what so ever. Took all of 3 minutes.Just be sure the TWO SIDED DUPLEX PRINTING option is engaged under printer properties. THIS MACHINE ALSO TAKES 28 POUND PAPER. Not all do.If you use paper with a brightness of 113, the color is really crisp, sharp and clean. I load the upper tray with standard paper and the lower tray ( which you dont need to install if you dont want to) filled with glossy photo paper. Although this printer substantial, be sure you have it on a ROCK SOLID SURFACE and you wont be disappointed with the end product. This unit comes with a black 21ml size ink cartridge which is said to print out 800 sheets. The Tri color is 14ml and is said to print out 450 aheets. Usually printers are shipped with minimal ink.....not this baby. Cartridge #99 contains 13ml photo ink.(which isoptional and NOT included) and is to be used with the Tri-Color if printing out BORDERLESS PHOTOS.The ONLY thing this DOESNT COME WITH is the USB 2 cord.I got one at WAl-Mart. DID I mention it's QUIET & FAST????
Men will love the unit for it's looks, speed and efficency. Women will love it for Duplexing and photo reproduction. It's a WIN- WIN situation in my book......and you cant beat the price AND Free shipping too!!!AMAZON.COM did it again.THANKS GUYS.

5-0 out of 5 stars HP creates another excellent product
I've only had the 6540dt for a few days, but from what I've seen so far, HP continues to make the most solid, high quality inkjets on the market. Not only does it operate well, it's attractive and yet even looks well built metal plate front. It's fast, with very sharp print quality.

After over three years of owning the HP Deskjet 932C and being extremely happy with it, I was thrilled to see this new model up for sale at a very good price for all the included features.

If you're in the market for a new printer, give the 6540 a serious look. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars uses small volume ink cartridge
I had almost decided to buy this printer (or the 3745 modelthat includes the black ink cartridge too) until I started comparing ink cartridge volumes.I'm replacing my HP660C that lasted a little over 10 years...a wonderful little printer. Its cartridge (black) holds 40ml of ink and costs just under $30.This printer's cartridge holds just 10ml and costs just under $20.I'm going to keep searching for an HP printer that uses ink cartridges 26 or 29, both of which hold 40ml.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good inexpensive printer
This is a very inexpensive printer that doesn't include a black ink cartridge nor a USB cable. The color cartridge has a pretty short life as well, maybe 100-150 pages.
I was apprehensive about such an inexpensive printer. I've been plesently surprised. The print quality is very good, photos are good as well. Compared to my old HP712C, this printer is at least as quiet, much faster, and better quality print. I don't agree with the other review saying its noisy. Most printers don't include connecting cables. The Canon another reviewer recommended doesn't include a USB cable either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad printer, but...
The print quality of the 3740 is good, but my main complaint with it is that HP doesn't make it clear that you need a USB A/USB B cable to connect it to your computer...which is sold separately (you can get the Belkin Pro Series USB 2.0 Device Cable (USB A/USB B, 10 Feet) from Amazon for $6.74, or else for ~$13 at Wal-Mart). Why would they sell you a printer without the necessary connectivity hardware to use it? Also, it doesn't come with the HP 28 cartridge (black), and that costs about $22 extra as well. Bottom line, this $40 printer will cost more like $65-$80 depending on where you get your cable. The Canon PIXMA iP1500 is a good alternative and the printer cartridges are much less expensive.

More about print quality. I can't say that I was disappointed by the quality of the printed photos. The pictures are professional quality as long as you are using good photo paper (which is the case with any printer). Text is good as well, plus the printer is very small which makes it handy if you don't have a lot of desk space left after hooking up your scanner, wireless router, phone adaptor, cable modem and other various junk that can wind up on a computer desk.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment
I have owned a number of HP printers over the years. In fact this replaces an older one that just happened to run out of both ink cartridges at the same time. I thought why not get a newer one then.Anyway, the paper capacity is low (something around 20 sheets at best--not 80).It prints slowly (no where near the 14 ppm that it claims on my computer) and fairly loudly for an inkjet printer (should be next to silent, but this sound kind of jerky).I has a fairly cheaply made feel to it.Interestingly, the "50 sheet output tray"--there isn't one.The pages fall right on top of the input paper. The ink cardridges (it only comes with a color--optional BW is at your expense) are very small. So though the cartridges are a little bit cheaper, I seem to now only be getting maybe 100-150 typed pages out of them. Years ago I had an inkjet from a cheaper company. It disappointed me and I spent the little bit extra to go to HP and haven't ever been disappointed until now. This is really sad that HP would make something this badly designed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I agree with all the reviews that say good things about this printer. For this printer to do its magic you really do need to have taken a snap that is well exposed in the first place.I have been amazed at some of the quality photographs produced. This printer does an amazing job on skin-tones.I have been disappointed with some land-scape shots, but they were realistic.I need to hone my photography skills more, perhaps. There is one amazing feature this printer has and no review, I have read yet, mentioned it i.e. the paper-tray doubles as a photo-paper holder (by folding over the flap) which stores your photo-paper and protects it from dust when it is not being used.Dust is the big enemy of photo-printing.

The only thing that prevented me giving this printer 5 stars was the cost of paper & ink and so far I have only being able to purchase them on line.Buying the large 108 pack does bring the price down and buying a few of them (if you can afford it) keeps the cost of post & packaging down also.

For portability, elegance and production it is one of the best photo printers out there at the moment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Paper Doesn't Fit Printer!!!
Canon suggests you buy 4x6 Paper to fit the printer. They don't give you a cartridge to use the paper with. They give you a postcard size and a Wide Size. They also only give you a ink cartridge to print 5 pictures worth. You would think with a printer that costs this much they could give you a proper cartridge, suggest the right paper to use and give you an actual ink cartridge that lasts at least 24 pictures!!

3-0 out of 5 stars am i not getting something here?
I received this printer as a gift, and was very pleased initially.... once i figured the cost per print, i wasn't sure if the convenience outweighed the cost... if you buy the 36 pack of paper and ink (you need to buy these, you can't use just regular photo printer paper) it works out to about 42 cents per... if you send yourimages to an online processor, it is anywhere from 22 to 29 cents per, and you have a guarantee that if it doesn't come out they will at least reprint it or refund your money. We were able to print out images on Christmas (nice feature, spontaneous and portable) but 2 of the 20 images printed out with a fuzzy on the photograph (which reprinted fine, but we paid for it basically).
the image quality is good, but the convenience factor is really what you are paying for, stock up on bulk packs and it may work out financially...
it is an excellent product, but there are limitations;
cost
size
quality (fuzzies)

other than that, it is a great product

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
First, if you shoot a SLR Digital and want a quick turn around for a proof, this is your printer (especially in the field).

The only calibration/setting that I have needed to do is in the Brightness and Red.It only took three prints total to get the color balance right. It appears to work with all other pictures without readjustment

A big plus: it does a great job of printing Black & White.I have only one picture that might have a slight sepia tint. That is a very big plus for me.I shoot mostly B&W, with the portability and product; it has helped with many of my film shots.

Two reasons why I did not give it five stars; first, a matte paper would be nice, second, in the preview/adjustment screen it would be nice to see the adjustment of colors to the picture you want to print (not a generic smiling child).

It is worth the cost for these reasons: portability, exceptional quality, ease of use, it is multi-voltage (110-240v) and more importantly, the compatibility with XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Quality Photos
I love having my own photo lab at home! This printer is simply fantastic and produces photos that look great. In fact, I can hardly tell the difference from the photos printed with my CP-330 and the ones I've had professionally developed. Photos come out incredibly sharp and colorful.

My favorite feature on this printer is the fact that I can plug my camera directly into it to print a photo that was taken mere moments before. It is so much fun to take photos and then almost immediately be able to have and share a print of it.

If you are looking for an easy to use, high quality photo printer, this would be the perfect choice. ... Read more
