Hewlett-Packard's CP1700ps inkjet printer combines markedly high-quality printing with a flat-topped, space-saving design, making it ideal for small businesses. The CP1700ps offers high-speed printing, churning out 16 pages ppm black, and 14 ppm color.

Reviews (1)

2-0 out of 5 stars flaky software, veriable hardware issues.
Note: This is a review based on working with the HP cp1700ps for one year at ~20 pages per week.

Strengths: Great when it works, sturdy construction
Weaknesses: Buggy hardware, buggy software, expensive ink.

Summary:
Our HP color inkjet printer cp1700ps worked fantastic most of the time, great output, good colors, fast printing but with a slow first page.

After two months it started making loud high pitch noises with every head-passing, HP support knows the issue; it's not easy to resolve. After six months of regularly cleaning a specific area, the noise no longer appears, the squeak causing area must be worn out.

The postscript option, which I bought as well, is not worth its money, it did work for about a month, printing with it was extremely slow on a system with 1Gigabyte RAM. Since then it keeps crashing on Windows XP at system startup, re-installs have never worked.

After six months the printer started complaining that cartridges are empty when in fact they are half full, really annoying when you want to print black only, but the printer insist that you need to replace yellow which you don't have in stock.

After 14 months the printer declared that cartridges were missing although they were physically present. Even after replacing all cartridges with brand new ones (that is ~$120), the printer still claims that black is missing. So I ended with non-working printer with expired warranty after 400 days of ownership, because it claims ink cartridges are missing when they are not.

The front feed mechanism works well for regular paper and has good allignment. Using heavier paper in the trays results in a very precise dent being made at a very precise spot on the page. Using thicker paper in the tray also results in banding in the printout. The single sheet rear feed causes less banding, no dents and can handle thicker paper but quite consistenly pulls the paper in croocked.

The ink is very expensive, the printer seems to waste quite a lot of it, judging by the mounds of dried up ink under the print heads.

HP has made it near impossible to use 3rd party ink supplies with this printer, with the chips built into the cartridges, so *only* expensive ink as an option. Legally they should allow one to use other source supplies.

In short an ill-behaved machine that works great when it feels like it, and in our case it did it only for about a year with some interrupions.

Next printer will be the Epson 2200 or 4000 for large color and some Laser. No more HP. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Need a printer while you're on the road? Take the Canon BJC-50 with you. This battery-powered, compact, color bubble-jet printer makes a great traveling companion for your notebook computer.

Setting up the BJC-50 was easy. We just followed the Quick Start Guide to install the lithium-ion battery and ink cartridge and to connect the AC adapter and printer cable. We then turned on our computer and followed the Windows setup wizard for setting up a new plug-and-play printer.

In our test of the BJC-50, we printed several color, black-and-white, draft-quality, and letter-quality samples. The samples included graphics, large and small letters, and a variety of color shades. Draft-quality printing was fast but attractive. Letter quality demonstrated modest improvements in character quality, and the printing was reasonably clear and sharp. Color shades were accurate, if not bold. There was some ink "bleeding" on ordinary uncoated paper, and even a discrete glance betrayed the BJC-50's bubble-jet origins--all as you would expect in a small bubble-jet printer.

At only 2.1 pounds the BJC-50 is exceptionally lightweight; its case is slim, attractive, and very compact--easy to tuck away in a backpack or briefcase. If you need color printing on the go, the Canon BJC-50 is a solid choice.

Pros:

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Portable, battery-powered

Cons:

  • Requires switching between color and black cartridges
  • Single-sheet feed (feeder optional)

5-0 out of 5 stars Canon BJC-50
Excellent printer...everything that I thought it would be . Works wells all the time. Works wells with Windows XP and downloaded driver from Canon site.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware
I purchased the Canon BJC-50 in August of 1998. It has take at least three hours to three days of effort to get it to work for each time that I have occasionally used it. I have used it mainly for color printing, and also for scanning with the optional scanning cartridge. It is particularly troublesome when switching from scan to print functions. It is quite noisy. I can not depend on it to function when I need it. It usually works eventually, but only after many trial and error attempts. Email technical support usually does not provide a quick solution. There have been no quick solutions. There have only been time consuming, painstaking encounters with this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Infrared works well with Windows ME
Even though it said that the infrared wireless printing only works with Windows 95, I found that it worked just as well with Windows ME installed in my laptop.

Two great benefits of the BJ-50: 1. Infrared wireless printing (if your laptop supports it) 2. There is battery in the printer, so you don't have to connect it to an electrical outlet to print! Both features are VERY convenient.

Print quality is decent, but I can't comment on ink life since I have just begun to use the printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this product.
"Excellent" That's all I can say...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!Canon BJC-50 Color Bubble Jet Printer!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk
I bought this piece of junk a year ago.It was fine for printing text, but photos always had lines running through them, no matter how many times I aligned the print head.

Finally last week the nozzles clogged, and it was all over.I'm not about to spend $50 for a new print head.I'll get a new printer, and it won't be a Canon!

2-0 out of 5 stars Huge Printhead Problems
My S750 worked well for 2 years. All of the sudden, however, the print quality dramatically decreased and an error message indicated that the printhead needed to be replaced. So, I reluctantly bought a new printhead ($50), installed it, and... now the printer does not print at all. All trouble-shooting does not help. Canon's tech support responded quickly, but the suggestions do not solve the problem. Canon's final advice: take it in to be serviced. However, in the meantime, I have lost interest in wasting more time and money and decided to purchase a new printer. Clearly, it won't be another Canon. I cannot recommend this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Printhead Problems
I have also had printhead problems with mine.It has worked great for 2 years but just gave out on me recently.I wouldn't mind buying a new printhead but I can't find any available on the internet and I would hate to have to pay half the price of the printer to get one.My printer will not print any color except blue and everything I print has white lines through it.I would recommend not purchasing one of these unless the defect is fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars bum printer
I would have rated this printer with 5 stars when I bought it for print quality & speed, but after less than a year of very light use I too am suffering from a buggered print head. Thanks to the other reviews on amazon I shall not waste my time replacing the print head but shall begin the search for a new printer, and it won't be another canon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Started out great...
when I first got his printer I was very pleased. One reason for buying it was the good reviews and that it was replacing an aging BJ6000 which used the same ink carts so I didn't have to waste all my old stock.

Well, 10 months later and I need a new printhead. Not only are they expensive - you can't find them.when available, they routinely sell for $55+ on eBay and I have seen websites that list them for $85!! Hey, I only paid $125 for the machine in the first place.

The only way for me to use it is to clean the heads before using it every day.As soon as my ink carts are done, I will be buying a replacement and it won't be a Canon. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars HP provides awful customer service
My wife and I wasted hours and hours trying to get HP service. HP has outsourced customer service to several developing countries, and each time we called, the representatives were unable to locate the record of our previous call. We were told time and again that we would be contacted by a "case manager" but that never happened. After weeks of trying, it became obvious that we need to discard the product (still under warrantee) and buy a new (non-HP) product ourselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars expensive cartridges and a menace to the environment
Forget about it. My husband and I bought this printer a while ago, and all I can say is that it hurts my stomach every time I use it. The cartridges are overly expensive, and once any of the four colors of the color cartridge runs out, it refuses to print, even if you are not using that specific color. Then the cartridges are absolutely unrecyclable. Nobody accepts it, and when I called customer service which is located in Canada, they told me that they are saving the ones they use, just in case they become recyclable at some point. We feel terrible about junking this bundle of polluting plastic, so we use it when needed, but if we could go back, we would NEVER, EVER buy this printer. If you think the price is nice, make your calculations with the expense of cartridges. Laser printers are going down in price and are as good as this, the prints will last longer, and they are not as environmentally unconscious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Six months with Epson 870
I use this printer for semi-professional image production making fine art-type 8x10 prints.Color saturation is very uniform with great depth and fine color matching, print after print. Lucky for me, the monitor and Adobe Photoshop are very accurate, so I do get what I see on the screen. My gallery prints are mostly 7x9, using a tiff setting on the 1.3 meg Olympus, I get a large file that can handle 7x9 in.just fine. One complaint, this printer really uses up the color ink cart. I count average of 36 full color 7x9 prints on heavy matt paper! When the cart. is low, the software will take it down even lower on nxt. boot-up and then you will not be able to use even the full blk.cart., thus locking up the printer until you put in a new color cart. I think the idea is to sell more $24. ink cartridges.

the results are worth it for me and perhaps for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok photoprint, good general use
I bought the Epson Photo Stylus on the basis on superior technical stats and excellent reviews from numerous sources (ZdNet, ComputerShopper etc ...).I have been mostly happy with it as a general purpose printer but I have found it somewhat frustrating to use as a photo printer.

The printer is easy to install and easy to calibrate. The print quality is good and the bundled extras are ok (Photo Delux is very useful, Epson Photo Factory is very light weight).

However, it is very difficult to achieve "photolab" quality results without significant tinkering.I find that only very good quality digital pictures will print to near (emphasize near)photo quality if done on the correct paper (only Epson brand matte paper seems to work) after 2 or 3 attempts at modifying the colour and print settings.I am sure that I could eliminate my need to play around with the setting with some more experimentation but it is going to take a lot more time and ink/paper to finally get the hang of it.If you are buying this printer expecting to get photo quality results out of the box, please be aware that this is not going to happen.

I am sure that true photo buffs can get excellent results with this printer but the average consumer is going to be a little frustrated. On the other hand, it makes a great general purpose colour printer that produces good quality output for print and graphics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A digital darkroom at home!
I've had my 870 for more than a year.It has lived through package after package of Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper without issue.I'm on my third digital camera upgrade but have found no reason to upgrade my Epson printer. The results are amazing! If you're worried about durability, I've had an Epson 780, an Epson 900 and now the 870 in service with zero issues. They just keep on going!

I've read some reviews regarding color management with this printer.I've never had that problem with Photo Shop, Photo Deluxe and other photo editing software, colors are perfect, including skin tones.I do always keep my drivers to the latest release.I've had this printer through Win 98, 98 SE and now 98 ME and Epson's drivers have never let me down. It's also key to put a little effort into setting up your PC.If you don't match your screen settings to your printers' output, you'll never have good looking prints.I did a lot of homework on the web and can honestly say that working a little in this area made an improvement in output quality.

I've put my Epson up against a number of other printers, even a couple of HP's that cost three times as much and have to say my Epson wins for photos. And come on, can you beat this price?Epson, keep up the good work, my next printer purchase dollars are yours.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Printer, but paper selections limited
This is a wonderful printer if you want to eliminate the corner photo lab,and all the time, money (and film) wasted there. Digital photography has freed me up to finally KNOW what I'm getting before it's printed. The 870 prints fabulous prints that rival the professional photo lab, and I love the Film Factory software included. Although to really do a more perfect job of manipulating the photos, there's nothing out there that beats Adobe.....I have both Adobe and Film Factory. Film Factory gives me what Adobe doesn't...an easy to use place to store and catagorize my prints, and see thumbnails of them all at once. My only objection to the Epson 870 is the limitation of paper I can use with it. I've seen and tried the new Epson Glossy Photo Paper, 4x6 (perforated edges) as well as the new Epson Glossy Photo Paper borderless. Another size I like to print are 5x7's. The Epson will not print a 5x7 on 5x7 paper,(competitor brand, I don't see that Epson sells a 5x7 size). To do these sizes properly with the 870, I have to use a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, what a waste of paper and money. Unfortunately, the Epson 870 is not set up to use these papers automatically, and that's a real shame, because I see here and at other consumer review sites, that this printer is extremely popular...so WHY doesn't Epson make 4x6 and 5x7 (cut sheets)paper especially for this printer??Other than that...the speed is very fast, quality is outstanding and overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars It works.
This is not the greatest printer ever, but it will do for simple printing needs.Works fine with OS X and updated bluetooth firmware. No 5 out of 5 because the printing sometimes messes up when printing with bluetooth, and is pretty slow with BT.Like I said, "It works."

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine w/Mac OSX 10.3.7 & Bluetooth Firmware Updater 1.2
I ordered the 995ck with the hope that Apple had fixed their Bluetooth implementation with this update. Evidently they did: the printer worked beautifully out of the box with my iMac G5 w/Bluetooth keyboard.

I would recommend the printer heartily, had it not abruptly vanished from the Amazon catalog (late Dec '04)

5-0 out of 5 stars Top quality unit - Good for low volume home office work
The HP Deskjet 995ck Inkjet printer is an updated version of the 995c printer, which was first released in 2001.The 995ck was released in September 2003, and the differences between the two are minor. The 995c came standard with the duplex (two sided) printing unit and an infrared sensor. For the 995ck, the duplex unit is optional and the infrared sensor has been dropped. Hewlett Packard (HP) has dozens of printers available both in the Laser and Inkjet category. I will explain below why I think that the 995ck is one of the best Inkjet printers on the market for under $500.00. I also purchased the HP 175x Jet Direct Print Server along with the printer.

Prior to purchasing the HP 995ck, I owned an Epson Stylus Color 800 Inkjet printer. It was the top rated Inkjet printer discussed in several computer magazine reviews at the time. I was looking to replace it with a unit of comparable quality and capacity. My requirements were as follows:

A) Excellent text and graphics printing on plain paper - Graphics being defined as pages printed from the internet or downloaded magazine articles which are then printed for later reading, perhaps with graphs, charts, etc.

B) An ink cartridge life of approximately 1000 pages, and reasonable printing speed.

C) Relatively low cost per page expense.

D) A full-featured Ethernet connection that would operate just like my HP 4050TN Laser printer, which has a built-in Ethernet connection. I have a home office with four computers and wanted everyone to be able to use both printers without my computer needing to be on to print.

E) A well built unit mechanically, which would stand up to occasional office use for a long time without parts falling off.

F) A printer capable of good photo printing, but top quality photos were not needed.

The HP 995ck was the best choice among 15 printers that I evaluated or read about. There are many Inkjets available for less than the $249.00 that I paid for this one, but in one respect or another they didn't cut it for me. Many of the low cost Inkjets appeared to be made very cheaply, using plastic parts in some spots that look like they may not last very long. Even the other HP low cost printers looked to me a bit flimsy, particularly the paper tray components. I suppose for $99.00 I shouldn't be so picky.

The other area I found to be a problem was getting a printer with a Network connection without having to buy a third party print server box. In many cases, these units do not work correctly with every printer and my research shows that in the reverse direction (that is when the printer sends status information back to the computer), they do not work at all. The 175x is bidirectional with most HP printers, however before making a purchase, check out the HP website for a list of compatible units. The 995ck comes standard with a USB connection.

The HP 995ck is cost effective with ink, with an average cost per page of about 5 cents. It has optional high capacity ink cartridges if you want them, and they are not that expensive (relative to other models). The other nice thing about the ink cartridges is that they have built in ink nozzles, so when you replace the ink cartridge you are also replacing the nozzle. Some printers made by other companies do not have an option for the user to replace the ink nozzle. The user would, in the case of ink nozzle failure, just buy a whole new printer.

The printing quality of the 995ck is excellent for both text and graphics, even on plain copy paper, and it prints quite a bit faster than my old Epson. As far as the build quality of this unit, I consider it better than most of the lower cost Inkjet units, including those made by HP. It does have plastic parts but they appear to be more solid than other units I looked at.

The 175x Jet Direct print server is an external print server, housed in a small box with the footprint of a 3x5 index card, and costs about $159.00. It turns the 995ck and some other HP inkjets into full-featured network printers. (NOTE - check the HP website for a compatible printer list and network capabilities). This allows the owner to share the printer with others on the network. It also allows you to locate the printer up to 100 feet away from the computer. It comes with a Installation wizard which worked quite well, although you may wind up calling HP's technical support if you are not that familiar which setting up networks.

I am very pleased with the 995ck although I have only had it for a short time. In other review articles on the web, when they discuss this printer, the focus was always on the Bluetooth connection. I have no interest in this feature and simply turned it off. One of the control panels has a button to shut it the Blue tooth connection down, if you don't need it.A well known consumer magazine recently reviewed some Inkjet printers and liked this one too.

Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures
It took a lot of searching before I decided to purchase a good printer and this one is a great one. The pictures are clear and they print fast. I showed them to friends and didn't tell them that I printed them at home and they were very surprised when I told them. Spend the extra money and get a good printer. This printer also include photo ink, which is really needed for a clean print. Make sure you also get the right paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great printer
I acquired an S830D recently.

You don't need the auxiliary screen to print directly from the memory card slot.

To access the cropping capabilities, yes, you need a screen or a compatible camera, but not to print from a memory card.Inserting a memory card (and I've used both CompactFlash and SmartMedia from both Canon and Olympus cameras) causes the S830D to go into a mode that activates automatic print functions on the printer control board. You can print an index sheet of thumbnail images, print all images in a wide variety of multi-print-per-page formats, selected prints using the index and vary the print media and quality from plain paper to Photo Paper Pro.

I have been very happy with both the color and the contrast produced by the printer with no computer intervention.

As for the rest of the printer's features, photo lab quality, good ink economy, fast and quiet operation.

This is the best printer I have ever owned.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great choice
... That said, I'm very happy with this printer. Other reviews, like the one on C|Net, have faulted the printer for mediocre text printing. I can't really address that complaint...have a laser printer for text and only use the S830 for printing photos and I'm very, very happy with how it performs that function. It's fast, I like being able to replace the ink cartridges separately, supports Exif if your digital camera outputs the encrypted data and the pictures are indistinguishable from those printed conventionally. It's the perfect color printer for my advanced amateur needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful photo printer
Other review has talked much about this printer. I only have few comments for those who don't know:
- First, the USB cable is not included. You have to buy the USB cable to install the software to re-align the print head, for example. The print head was factory set and produce beautiful print though
- Second, the little LCD screen is not included and cost 100 USD to purchase separately. You need it if you print photo directly from your memory card in the built in slot of the printer. Without the screen, you can't print from this slot.
- Third, there are "selected" Canon camera that support direct print with this printer. My ELPH S110 only works with the CP-10 or CP-100 photo printer, but not with this printer. What a pain!
- 4"x6" borderless paper is what you probably need as it give a nice borderless photo at ease. Printing direct on A4 or letter paper waste a lot of paper at the edge. You may as well cut the A4 to 4 pieces and print from the PC, which allow you to print, say, A6 borderless photo. Don't get bother with the perforated paper.
- The sample pack paper give the best result. I wonder if they sell it.
- Turn on the Image optimizer with Vivid photo option gives even better picture when printing direct.
- If you don't want the direct printing, or you always edit your photo first before printing, go for some other Canon printer that do not have direct printing, it will save you some big bucks.

My wife loves this printer, because she can work with it alone, without a PC. That's the point, after all, to have a direct printing option, right?

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST PRINTER I HAVE EVER OWNED
We bought this printer to go with the canon G2 we bought.Excellent choice.First I must say if you are considering buying it from anyone other than Amazon[.com],DON'T.I have dealt with Amazon[.com] for years and they are the best at what they do,no one comes close. The printer is so easy to setup, not like some of are other printers. We are using Window XP,it went like a breeze.in lees than 30 minutes I was printing pictures.... I am still learning all the features, but the quality of the pictuers is as good if not better than any other.. And it is fast fast, printed 2 4x6 pictures in less than 4 minutes,I have found that you do need to buy quality paper.I used the Canon 4x6 bordless paper first until I ran out, then I switched to another brand, big mistake.Use the right paper and you to will be amazed. ... Amazon.com Review

Vibrant colors and crisp black characterize the output of the EpsonStylus 777. It offers print speeds of up to 8 pages per minute in black and 6ppm in color, 880 x 720 dpi resolution, and quick-drying, smudge-proof inks.Epson also incorporates MicroPiezo ink-jet technology and AcuPhoto halftoningfor natural skin tones and smooth gradations for reliable results with eachprint.

In our tests of the 777, we loved the speedy setup. Color and black inkcartridges snapped in easily with no mess or mistakes. A foldout guide walked usthrough clearly and thoroughly detailed steps to get running. Epson also coversprinter basics for the novice in their user's guide. Software loadedintuitively, though the useful electronic printer manual was a bitfanciful.

We printed a variety of images on some of the specialty papers thatEpson included in the box. We selected the photo enhancement setting to improvebrightness and contrast when printing photos, and the 777 handled these printingjobs with pleasing results. With quiet print operation, we were undisturbed onthe telephone or deep in conversation.

You can expect to get about 400 to 600pages of black printing, or under 300 for color, before replacing thecartridges. With automatic ink-low and ink-out detection, you can track how muchink you have left with the onscreen progress display during printing. A100-sheet input tray accepts a wide range of standard papers, envelopes, andmany specialty media, including labels, photo paper, and card stock holding upto 30 pages of output at one time.

We appreciated the 777's sleek look--cleancurved lines in soft gray--and its compact design. The 777's small footprintmeasures just 10 by 6.8 by 17.7 inches to save desk or counter space; it weighsa movable 8.4 pounds.

The 777 comes with Corel Print House 2000 for photoediting, Epson Software Film Factory for image editing and Trellix Web forcreating Web pages. It is also supplied with driver software for most Windows orMacintosh systems and for USB connectivity. The unit is backed by a one-yearwarranty. --David Greenberger

3-0 out of 5 stars SLOW NOISY INK GLUTTON
This printer came as part of a computer package deal so I didn't actually pick it out. It WORKED fine & dandy for 2 years, the speed & noise were no big deal. Expensive ink is just the nature of the beast with inexpensive inkjets!
Then it suddenly conked out & no amount of new drivers, (very little) help from maker, or reinstalling would work.
Repair would have been $90 just to LOOK at it, so I said forget it & bought an HP1209 3-in-1 for $79!!
When it first stopped working, the trouble lights indicated low ink (though I print rarely & it had nearly full cartridges)
But I bought 2 new ones which of course didn't help & I now have 2 sets of no use to me that will only fit Epson 777 or 777i models. Wish I could unload them REAL cheap on someone whose 777 or 777i still works!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great , then went to crap
I got this printer brand new at CompUSA 4 years ago for only $40 (a new store opening celebration). It worked great until I put a generic cartridge in there. All it did was streak and clog the heads. When I finally found a cartridge that worked the gears and belts went to crap!! The estimate for repair was $60. I threw the printer out a 6 story window.

5-0 out of 5 stars Epson Stylus Color 777
The Epson Stylus Color 777 is a pretty tough little printer. It prints pictures on photo paper that looks like you had them professionally printed. I love the speed of this thing. A full color picture takes only a few minutes to print.
Pros:
Quiet Print
Fast Print
Quality
Cons:
Small Paper Tray
Expensieve Ink Cartridges

1-0 out of 5 stars Sheesh....
Don't get me wrong.

I have been a fan of Epson's for a very long time from the inception of the Stylus II to the 800.

However, my 800 died after long, faithful and workhorse-like service. So I saw the rather affordable 777! So, like a fool, I believed that inkjet printers had become extremely cheap and wouldn't feel that Epson had compromised on quality. Right?

Wrong!! First and foremost, the printer felt as if it had to clean the inkjet cartridges--before printing--anytime that it had not been used for, say, a DAY...even if I left it on! As anyone owning an inkjet printer would know, this consumes ink.

Then there was its functionality. Every, and I mean EVERY, single time I put in new ink, I noticed that streaking and banding would occur. This, of course, was easily corrected...BY CLEANING THE CARTRIDGES ONCE MORE. Honestly, if I installed the cartridges the first time when they were primed and CLEANED, you would not expect me to think: "Oh, geez, time to clean the heads AGAIN?!?" And it goes through ink in no time flat. Even purchasing inkjet cartridges at certain warehouse stores was not saving on the pocket book...within a month, I paid more for cartridges then I did for the original printer. YIKES!

Don't bother with this printer. It went well for about a month and then decided to crash on me...hard. You DEFINITELY get what you PAY for here! If I had to make a recommendation, I would go with my recent purchase of an HP Photosmart 7350. It's a little pricey, but its functionality of incorporating a direct input for SmartMEDIA cards as well as its picture quality is worth the price.

2-0 out of 5 stars too much ink

1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY
Buy something else, if there were a zero star option I would have given it.

Now on the plus side when it works the prints are excellent.

But the trouble is with the "when it works" !

Every time I try and print anything seems the heads are always clogged, it then takes numerous cleaning cycles and LOADS of VERY expensive ink to clean.

Oh and then your cleaning the black head (using color ink as well) after the fifth cycle, its almost cleared the clog.... you get the "color ink low - change color ink cartridge" guess what you just used up all your color ink cleaning the black head

Sometimes cloggs midway through printing a 10 x 8 print..... very anoying.

I just bought a Canon ip 4000 so this ones in the trash!

3-0 out of 5 stars What do you expect?
I have had this printer for almost 2 years. I use the cheapest ink I can find and YES I use it with XP.
I think it is JUST FINE. If you want upscale prints buy an upscale printer. I have another Epson printer that I tried to use tech support and EPSON TECH SUPPORT is equivilant to DRUNK MONKEYS....at best.I find OEM Epson ink is horrible. CLogs worse than anything and is stupidly expensive. BUY GENERIC.
Try Voltexx.com for cheap ink.
I have let this printer sit for weeks (6-8) and used it. YES I have to run headcleaning several times. But I buy CHEAP INK !!!!
NUFF SAID.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella printer
This printer worked great... for about a year, and then turned back into a pumpkin.Printouts started getting ugly stripes and splotches of random ink.Repeated printhead cleanings didn't help much either. If you're looking for a good printer that lasts, stay away Epson and check out Canon or HP.

2-0 out of 5 stars Paper feeder will drive you nuts!
I didn't buy this on Amazon but wish I had come to see the negative reviews first!
Print quality is fair, but does seem to go through the printer cartridges awfully fast.

But the most annoying thing is how it loads paper - or doesn't! It grabs several sheets simultaneously, so that you have to stand there and feed it one sheet at a time.

If you don't, it will take so many it clogs the machine, chews up the paper, leaves a black smear on everything and sounds like it's going to die.

If you put in only a few sheets to prevent this problem, it will still grab them all and then start making a loud "protesting" noise when it's out.

I always talk back to it and tell it that it's the printer's own damn fault for being a paper hog. See - that's how annying it is - you end up cursing it out every time you print more than one page!!

So I would not recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away
At first I thought this was a great buy. This printer eats ink like crazy. When my printer quit on me after only 6 months of use, epson was kind enough to send me a "refurbished" printer that did not last long at all, but was only under warranty for 90 days.I don't understand why they would send me a refurbished printer, when I bought a new printer.I thin I would rather have my printer fixed.Anyway, I replaced with Canon i860 and I am very happy with it. ... With Epson's water-resistant, light-resistant, and smudge-resistant DURABrite inks and 177 nozzles (monochrome plus color), the C64 can print black text at 17 pages per minute, color sheets at 9 ppm, and 8-by-10-inch color photos in under five minutes each. The printer's 5,760 optimized dpi ensures photo-quality clarity and detail for your bordered or borderless pictures, text, or graphics. Of course, higher-quality settings result in longer print times.

For photos, DURABrite photo paper gives amazing prints with vibrant color, fine detail in highlight and dark areas and smooth graduations. For everyday printing, you can enjoy the same exceptional quality on plain or recycled papers. The C64 supports several paper types, including plain paper, premium semi-gloss, and DURABrite photo paper, as well as large-format sizes up to 10 by 15 inches. Convenient individual ink cartridges make ink replacement simple and cost-effective, and USB connectivity facilitates quick setups on both Windows and Macintosh computers. 1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for ...
You get what you pay for ... a cheap and nasty printer. The black ink cartridges cost 25% of the value of the printer and last long enough to print a couple of letters.

It takes forever to warm up, is slow and noisy, constantly nags you about ink levels, and mine eventually just started printing blank pages despite replacing the cartridge.

I would never buy another Epson. I suggest you do the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars A one-star rating is unspeakably generous.
I am honestly surprised that I even have time to write this review, considering the fact that my every waking second is spent fixing the paper jams created by this worthless, soul-destroying printer. Not a single print job is completed without at least two noisy, snarly, monumentally infuriating paper jams. This printer basically just sits there, rips up paper, guzzles through insanely pricey low quality ink, and makes my life a waking nightmare.Needless to say, the paper jams aren't the only problem.Ink cartridges will last you approximately 10.5 seconds, and I have easily spent five times the price of the printer in replacement cartridges and I've only owned the thing for THREE MONTHS.Epson, you have some serious freaking explaining to do.I have no idea if your other products are equally horrific, but I am content with the knowledge that I will never find out.I wouldn't buy another Epson product if it were the only thing standing between me and a slow, painful, early death.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable and Expensive
I bought this printer 8 months ago.It worked well for the first few prints. After that, I used up about 80% of my first cartridge cleaning the print heads, which never seemed to work very well. Each head cleaning seems to use up about 5% of the ink in the cartridges. After the black cartridge ran out I spent $22 on a new one from Amazon, only to discover the printer had stopped printing entirely after installing it.I will never buy another Epson product after owning this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Label Hell
This printer seems to be incapable of printing labels (however I do accept that it may be possible that I have a faulty unit). The Label begins to feed, then the printer dog ears the corner and pulls the label off the backing and jams itself to death. This is using A4 Avery labels which have on other printers seemed infallible.

It is a real shame as it can perform well if you only need to print a few photo's.

Beware being tempted by the price of this unit, you may be better stepping up to a higher modem Epson.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap to buy, expensive to own
The ink will kill you, especially the black. Generic ink? Forget it. It clogs the nozzles and you'll waste more than you will use cleaning the nozzles. This thing does give a good print-out, but it's not worth the high price of ownership. I had an 880 and loved it. I hate this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice printer if you're on a budget
My old Lexmark died on me after 5 years of good service.I needed a replacement and I needed one for cheap. This printer fits the bill.Set-up was quick and easy, I was up and running within 15 minutes. My only complaint is the lack of a USB cable.Since I rarely use my scanner I just took the one from it, but it would be a pain to keep switching cables if I used my scanner a lot.Still, for 38.99 and free shipping, you could do worse than this little guy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic printer
This is a fairly decent printer. If you want a basic printer, this does the job. I had this, a scanner, and all separate items, so I changed to a printer that was inclusive. I no longer need all the separate ones like this, but I still have this one and I'll give it to my nephew or someone, because for a beginner this is a good printer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Printer, Low Cost, Reputable Brand Name
Extremely easy installation for even the beginner, decent amount of ink included in the 2 seperate cartridges for the low price (I'd typically not expect to get even 1 catridge for $40 anymore), excellent print quality for a $40 printer, reputatable brand. Definitely recommend purchasing this if you need a basic, everyday printer, for college and grade school children homework/assignments...and ink refills or replacements are not costly on this model :-) I've had 8 different printer models over the past 11 years most failed to impress me, this one is for my niece but I would use myself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Technical Support
Just bought the product today and had a horrible time installing, I called tech support and was told it was a puter issue...so I spent $39.99 on the printer, then $75 for a service call - only to find out it was the CD that came with the printer.Worst customer service from a company! Good Luck.I haven't even printed anything out and already know I will never buy another Lexmark product again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent enought printer, but ships with old software!
I bought this Z515 printer from one of the big retail superchain stores in Sept. of 2004, at a great price. It is not a bad little printer--ESPECIALLY considering the price-- and fired right up with its installation CD (after a false start--may have been a problem with my CD-ROM drive or USB port.)

Prints nice color photos when using glossy paper, and, in draft mode, literally spits out printed text on plain paper in no time flat! And the results look MUCH better than one might expect from draft quality. Haven't experienced any paper jamming yet, either. The printer doesn't waste ink by going through a head-cleaning process each time it comes on; in fact, you have to instruct it to clean the heads if and when necessary. (I haven't even found a need to do that yet.) Has a nice auto-off feature when you shut your computer down...haven't experienced that before!

The problem with this printer is that it ships with a PREVIOUS version of Lexmark software-- the 510-series software. What this means is that, CONTRARY to what the box and this website say, it does NOT print color photos at up to 4800 dpi.In fact, there are only two dpi settings that I can find, 600 and 2400.Not that 2400 dpi resolution looks bad--it doesn't.But why claim a feature when the printer doesn't have it??I'm assuming that Lexmark's website MAY have a newer version of the software available for download (an irritating idea in and of itself, having to download appropriate software)...but so far, I haven't been able to access their site without my internet browser program crashing!

Again, not a bad printer, and I'll hang onto mine-- but beware that what you get isn't what is being advertised. I give the printer itself 4 to 5 stars, but the software issue brings it down to 3. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Big Throwaway Printer!
The Lexmark was nice while it lasted but after a few months and two re-inkings...it's heart ceased to beat.Amazon's free delivery was super...I just wish I could say the same for the Z615.Print quality and speed were excellent until the printer seized up...just like my old Z42.I should have learned but at least I now know to stick with Canon from here on end as our S200 while a little slower than some more modern types...is still going and printing fine like the workhorse it is!Lexmark cartridge prices are outrageous and that is why I purchased the re-inking kit.It worked once but now the printer won't accept them and wouldn't even accept a brand new Lexmark # 17 "Black" cartridge. The printer green "Power Light" simply blinks and a message appears telling me that there is a severe problem.Do yourself a favor and purchase the low cost Canon IPS 1500 instead. You'll get fast reliable FREE SHIPPING from Amazon.Com and great service from the printer itself. You'll jump for joy when you see the low prices on replacement ink cartridges to boot! ...
