Strengths: Great when it works, sturdy construction Summary: After two months it started making loud high pitch noises with every head-passing, HP support knows the issue; it's not easy to resolve. After six months of regularly cleaning a specific area, the noise no longer appears, the squeak causing area must be worn out. The postscript option, which I bought as well, is not worth its money, it did work for about a month, printing with it was extremely slow on a system with 1Gigabyte RAM. Since then it keeps crashing on Windows XP at system startup, re-installs have never worked. After six months the printer started complaining that cartridges are empty when in fact they are half full, really annoying when you want to print black only, but the printer insist that you need to replace yellow which you don't have in stock. After 14 months the printer declared that cartridges were missing although they were physically present. Even after replacing all cartridges with brand new ones (that is ~$120), the printer still claims that black is missing. So I ended with non-working printer with expired warranty after 400 days of ownership, because it claims ink cartridges are missing when they are not. The front feed mechanism works well for regular paper and has good allignment. Using heavier paper in the trays results in a very precise dent being made at a very precise spot on the page. Using thicker paper in the tray also results in banding in the printout. The single sheet rear feed causes less banding, no dents and can handle thicker paper but quite consistenly pulls the paper in croocked. The ink is very expensive, the printer seems to waste quite a lot of it, judging by the mounds of dried up ink under the print heads. HP has made it near impossible to use 3rd party ink supplies with this printer, with the chips built into the cartridges, so *only* expensive ink as an option. Legally they should allow one to use other source supplies. In short an ill-behaved machine that works great when it feels like it, and in our case it did it only for about a year with some interrupions. Next printer will be the Epson 2200 or 4000 for large color and some Laser. No more HP. ... Read more | |

Amazon.com Review Setting up the BJC-50 was easy. We just followed the Quick Start Guide to install the lithium-ion battery and ink cartridge and to connect the AC adapter and printer cable. We then turned on our computer and followed the Windows setup wizard for setting up a new plug-and-play printer. In our test of the BJC-50, we printed several color, black-and-white, draft-quality, and letter-quality samples. The samples included graphics, large and small letters, and a variety of color shades. Draft-quality printing was fast but attractive. Letter quality demonstrated modest improvements in character quality, and the printing was reasonably clear and sharp. Color shades were accurate, if not bold. There was some ink "bleeding" on ordinary uncoated paper, and even a discrete glance betrayed the BJC-50's bubble-jet origins--all as you would expect in a small bubble-jet printer. At only 2.1 pounds the BJC-50 is exceptionally lightweight; its case is slim, attractive, and very compact--easy to tuck away in a backpack or briefcase. If you need color printing on the go, the Canon BJC-50 is a solid choice. Pros: Cons: Features Reviews (5)
Two great benefits of the BJ-50: 1. Infrared wireless printing (if your laptop supports it) 2. There is battery in the printer, so you don't have to connect it to an electrical outlet to print! Both features are VERY convenient. Print quality is decent, but I can't comment on ink life since I have just begun to use the printer.

the results are worth it for me and perhaps for you.
The printer is easy to install and easy to calibrate. The print quality is good and the bundled extras are ok (Photo Delux is very useful, Epson Photo Factory is very light weight). However, it is very difficult to achieve "photolab" quality results without significant tinkering.I find that only very good quality digital pictures will print to near (emphasize near)photo quality if done on the correct paper (only Epson brand matte paper seems to work) after 2 or 3 attempts at modifying the colour and print settings.I am sure that I could eliminate my need to play around with the setting with some more experimentation but it is going to take a lot more time and ink/paper to finally get the hang of it.If you are buying this printer expecting to get photo quality results out of the box, please be aware that this is not going to happen. I am sure that true photo buffs can get excellent results with this printer but the average consumer is going to be a little frustrated. On the other hand, it makes a great general purpose colour printer that produces good quality output for print and graphics.
I've read some reviews regarding color management with this printer.I've never had that problem with Photo Shop, Photo Deluxe and other photo editing software, colors are perfect, including skin tones.I do always keep my drivers to the latest release.I've had this printer through Win 98, 98 SE and now 98 ME and Epson's drivers have never let me down. It's also key to put a little effort into setting up your PC.If you don't match your screen settings to your printers' output, you'll never have good looking prints.I did a lot of homework on the web and can honestly say that working a little in this area made an improvement in output quality. I've put my Epson up against a number of other printers, even a couple of HP's that cost three times as much and have to say my Epson wins for photos. And come on, can you beat this price?Epson, keep up the good work, my next printer purchase dollars are yours.

Prior to purchasing the HP 995ck, I owned an Epson Stylus Color 800 Inkjet printer. It was the top rated Inkjet printer discussed in several computer magazine reviews at the time. I was looking to replace it with a unit of comparable quality and capacity. My requirements were as follows: A) Excellent text and graphics printing on plain paper - Graphics being defined as pages printed from the internet or downloaded magazine articles which are then printed for later reading, perhaps with graphs, charts, etc. B) An ink cartridge life of approximately 1000 pages, and reasonable printing speed. C) Relatively low cost per page expense. D) A full-featured Ethernet connection that would operate just like my HP 4050TN Laser printer, which has a built-in Ethernet connection. I have a home office with four computers and wanted everyone to be able to use both printers without my computer needing to be on to print. E) A well built unit mechanically, which would stand up to occasional office use for a long time without parts falling off. F) A printer capable of good photo printing, but top quality photos were not needed. The HP 995ck was the best choice among 15 printers that I evaluated or read about. There are many Inkjets available for less than the $249.00 that I paid for this one, but in one respect or another they didn't cut it for me. Many of the low cost Inkjets appeared to be made very cheaply, using plastic parts in some spots that look like they may not last very long. Even the other HP low cost printers looked to me a bit flimsy, particularly the paper tray components. I suppose for $99.00 I shouldn't be so picky. The other area I found to be a problem was getting a printer with a Network connection without having to buy a third party print server box. In many cases, these units do not work correctly with every printer and my research shows that in the reverse direction (that is when the printer sends status information back to the computer), they do not work at all. The 175x is bidirectional with most HP printers, however before making a purchase, check out the HP website for a list of compatible units. The 995ck comes standard with a USB connection. The HP 995ck is cost effective with ink, with an average cost per page of about 5 cents. It has optional high capacity ink cartridges if you want them, and they are not that expensive (relative to other models). The other nice thing about the ink cartridges is that they have built in ink nozzles, so when you replace the ink cartridge you are also replacing the nozzle. Some printers made by other companies do not have an option for the user to replace the ink nozzle. The user would, in the case of ink nozzle failure, just buy a whole new printer. The printing quality of the 995ck is excellent for both text and graphics, even on plain copy paper, and it prints quite a bit faster than my old Epson. As far as the build quality of this unit, I consider it better than most of the lower cost Inkjet units, including those made by HP. It does have plastic parts but they appear to be more solid than other units I looked at. The 175x Jet Direct print server is an external print server, housed in a small box with the footprint of a 3x5 index card, and costs about $159.00. It turns the 995ck and some other HP inkjets into full-featured network printers. (NOTE - check the HP website for a compatible printer list and network capabilities). This allows the owner to share the printer with others on the network. It also allows you to locate the printer up to 100 feet away from the computer. It comes with a Installation wizard which worked quite well, although you may wind up calling HP's technical support if you are not that familiar which setting up networks. I am very pleased with the 995ck although I have only had it for a short time. In other review articles on the web, when they discuss this printer, the focus was always on the Bluetooth connection. I have no interest in this feature and simply turned it off. One of the control panels has a button to shut it the Blue tooth connection down, if you don't need it.A well known consumer magazine recently reviewed some Inkjet printers and liked this one too. Highly Recommended. Bobzt

You don't need the auxiliary screen to print directly from the memory card slot. To access the cropping capabilities, yes, you need a screen or a compatible camera, but not to print from a memory card.Inserting a memory card (and I've used both CompactFlash and SmartMedia from both Canon and Olympus cameras) causes the S830D to go into a mode that activates automatic print functions on the printer control board. You can print an index sheet of thumbnail images, print all images in a wide variety of multi-print-per-page formats, selected prints using the index and vary the print media and quality from plain paper to Photo Paper Pro. I have been very happy with both the color and the contrast produced by the printer with no computer intervention. As for the rest of the printer's features, photo lab quality, good ink economy, fast and quiet operation. This is the best printer I have ever owned.
My wife loves this printer, because she can work with it alone, without a PC. That's the point, after all, to have a direct printing option, right?

Amazon.com Review In our tests of the 777, we loved the speedy setup. Color and black inkcartridges snapped in easily with no mess or mistakes. A foldout guide walked usthrough clearly and thoroughly detailed steps to get running. Epson also coversprinter basics for the novice in their user's guide. Software loadedintuitively, though the useful electronic printer manual was a bitfanciful. We printed a variety of images on some of the specialty papers thatEpson included in the box. We selected the photo enhancement setting to improvebrightness and contrast when printing photos, and the 777 handled these printingjobs with pleasing results. With quiet print operation, we were undisturbed onthe telephone or deep in conversation. You can expect to get about 400 to 600pages of black printing, or under 300 for color, before replacing thecartridges. With automatic ink-low and ink-out detection, you can track how muchink you have left with the onscreen progress display during printing. A100-sheet input tray accepts a wide range of standard papers, envelopes, andmany specialty media, including labels, photo paper, and card stock holding upto 30 pages of output at one time. We appreciated the 777's sleek look--cleancurved lines in soft gray--and its compact design. The 777's small footprintmeasures just 10 by 6.8 by 17.7 inches to save desk or counter space; it weighsa movable 8.4 pounds. The 777 comes with Corel Print House 2000 for photoediting, Epson Software Film Factory for image editing and Trellix Web forcreating Web pages. It is also supplied with driver software for most Windows orMacintosh systems and for USB connectivity. The unit is backed by a one-yearwarranty. --David Greenberger Pros: Cons: Features Reviews (49)
I have been a fan of Epson's for a very long time from the inception of the Stylus II to the 800. However, my 800 died after long, faithful and workhorse-like service. So I saw the rather affordable 777! So, like a fool, I believed that inkjet printers had become extremely cheap and wouldn't feel that Epson had compromised on quality. Right? Wrong!! First and foremost, the printer felt as if it had to clean the inkjet cartridges--before printing--anytime that it had not been used for, say, a DAY...even if I left it on! As anyone owning an inkjet printer would know, this consumes ink. Then there was its functionality. Every, and I mean EVERY, single time I put in new ink, I noticed that streaking and banding would occur. This, of course, was easily corrected...BY CLEANING THE CARTRIDGES ONCE MORE. Honestly, if I installed the cartridges the first time when they were primed and CLEANED, you would not expect me to think: "Oh, geez, time to clean the heads AGAIN?!?" And it goes through ink in no time flat. Even purchasing inkjet cartridges at certain warehouse stores was not saving on the pocket book...within a month, I paid more for cartridges then I did for the original printer. YIKES! Don't bother with this printer. It went well for about a month and then decided to crash on me...hard. You DEFINITELY get what you PAY for here! If I had to make a recommendation, I would go with my recent purchase of an HP Photosmart 7350. It's a little pricey, but its functionality of incorporating a direct input for SmartMEDIA cards as well as its picture quality is worth the price.
