5-0 out of 5 stars Last reviewer wrong... this phone is great.
To the last reviewer:
You complained about incorrect information from Amazon regarding this phone. Never in Amazon's description do they mention that THIS phone has "talking caller ID". The phone with talking caller ID is the:

Panasonic KX-TG2357B 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets, Answering System, and Talking Caller ID (Black). It sells for $110.19 (at the time of this review).

Please do your research and not give a GOOD phone a bad review when your reviewing the WRONG item.

THIS phone is great... and I really have enjoyed using it. It's not as fancy as some others out there, but it does the job!!

1-0 out of 5 stars NO TALKING CALLERID
I purchased this phone for the sole purpose of the "Talking" Caller ID that Amazon advertises in the description. After receiving the phone, I see NOTHING on the box or in the book that says ANYTHING about having "Talking" caller ID. I contacted the seller, and he too said he saw nothing about it. I contacted Amazon...but they don't seem to get it....that they are advertising something thats not there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This phone if GrEaT!!! it comes with plenty of features such as transfering the call to another handset. However, you can hear some staticky noise in the background while your on the phone with someone else. The range isn't that great either. If i go in my backyard, the tone starts to skip. Overall, this phone is full of features that are very useful. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The KX-TG2422W 2.4 GHz GigaRange cordless phone uses frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology to give you outstanding range and signal consistency. With subscription to local service, it supports caller ID/call waiting, so you know who's calling to chat, with just a glance at the handset. The 50-station memory stores the most recent callers' names and numbers, along with the date and time of their call.

Each handset can store a separate phonebook--making it a great system for a home office or resident teen--or you can share one book among handsets. 1-0 out of 5 stars No Headset Jack
I purchased this item through amazon partner circuitcity.

The extended techinical information about this phone is incorrect. There is no Headset jack. I wish I had gone to panasonic official site to confirm this. For me no headset jack means this phone is less then useless. I find it very strange that a phone of this price does not have headset jack. Needless to say I will be returning this phone soon as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!
I charged the units the day I received it from Amazon, approximately two weeks ago.Have been using it without any problems continuously since then. I really like the idea of being able to send the "phone book" from one unit to the other in a matter of seconds. Can't find any disadvantages as yet. ... Read more

How Does Bluetooth Work?
Bluetooth technology has been incorporated into this phone to make it easy to communicate with either a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone or a wireless headset. You don't even have to think about it. Bluetooth doesn't require you to do anything special to make it work. The devices find each other and strike up a conversation without any user input at all. Now you can tap into your cell phone minutes to take advantage of your cellular plan, or just go hands-free using your land line for crystal-clear communication anywhere in the house.

How Does CellLink Work?
Uniden CellLink technology lets you easily take advantage of your cell phone's minutes. If you have a Bluetooth v1.1 compliant mobile phone and register it to the base, you can make or receive a call through your mobile line as well as your normal land line. To use your mobile line, press the Mobile soft key. The two lines will be completely independent on your ELBT595. For example, you can have one handset operating on the land line while another handset and the base unit participate ina three-way conference call on the mobile line. However, you cannot make or receive a land linecall using a Bluetooth mobile phone, and a Bluetooth mobile phone will not ring whenthe ELBT595 receives a land line calI.

Easy, Powerful Features
Additional features include enhanced caller ID so you can see who's calling with a unique full color picture and distinctive ring. The digital answering system quickly access your answering system using your handset or your base. Volume settings adjust the ringer and speaker volumes on your handset. An advanced phonebook organizes your names and numbers, with special capabilities like storing four numbers per name and sorting names into groups.

You can easily update your phonebook settings using your computer with the USB connector and software included. Enjoy hands-free communication without wires using a Bluetooth headset or the hands-free speakerphone. Easily navigate features with a joystick and soft-key menus. Record your own ringer tones with the audio cable or handset microphone (cable included).

Compatible Handsets
This expandable base system is compatible with Uniden handset models ELX500, TCX400, TCX440, and TCX805. However, only the ELX500 is compatible the base system's Bluetooth and CellLink features.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this phone before touching and feeling it
No doubt, this phone has lot of features. I was waiting for this phone to come since Feb. Its photos and all look very pretty. But, when I went to see this phone physically in a store, I was really repelled by the cheap quality material used. This phone really looks like a kid's toy and that too from some one dollar shop. Needs lot of improvements in the design, aesthetics and material.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait for the Next Version
I was all hyped up about getting this phone and that feeling faded after only 24hrs of owning it. This phone represents a good try by Uniden, but I feel that it needs to go back for a version 2. First, for me, the ringers on this phone do not ring loud enough (with a few expectations)....Uniden does allow you to set the base station to ring, and it does ring loudly (too loudly at night) but that defeats the reason to have a cordless phone if you are attached to the base station all day. The LCD on the closed clamshell isn't very good. It is easier to read when the backlighting is off then when on. The hinge on my phone squeaked when opening and closing and the keys on the handset feel cheap, not what you should expect from at $250 phone. The software to program the phone is nice, easy to use, and made it really convenient to program in over 50 names and reminder dates, but it would have been nice if Uniden would have allowed you to download ringtones into the phone via the software and USB cable, rather then having to record it into the phone via a mic or a line setup. The color screen is nice and bright, but too small...its like 150 pixels X 150 pixels and the images you can download for your contacts become the size of a postage stamp CUT IN HALF!!Overall it is an average phone, not worth $250, maybe $160....all I know is mine is going back to the store for a refund. See you next time Uniden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good concept... but falls short
Just gotten this phone with an extra handset for only few days and so far, I've been somewhat pleased with the performance. The system has a wealth of features, yet relatively easy to setup & operate. The main highlight is the cell phone-like function & design with Bluetooth technology. The sound quality on both ends is loud and clear. My Motorola HS850 bluetooth headset links up without a hitch. However, its shortcomings are the buttons on the handset which feels too plastic, and the LCD on the front side of the handset is difficult to read, even more so when lit. A friend had commented that the handset's LCD screen is small and OS software looks primitive. He also added that the handset's plastic housing doesn't have a solid feel to it. By the way, when opening/closing the handset, the hinge squeaks. For that price, one expects higher quality materials used and have good, solid construction. Also a concern is the battery charge/life. So far, I noticed that a charge yields about the same as your typical cell phone, lasting 3 to 4 days - relatively short for a cordless phone. All said, I have until the end of the month to put it thru a thorough test before having the option of returning it.

UPDATE - Had the phone for a week now... and it's going back to the store. Guess it didn't make it to the end of the month. Too expensive of a phone system that has too many shortcomings. I'll hold off for a 2nd generation. This should have been be a 2-star rating (maybe 3-star), but definitely not a 5-star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cordless + Wireles - best innovative Cordless Phone To-Date
Since I rarely make calls from my home phone, I got rid of my land line and my Panasonic 2.4Ghz expandable phone system (total 5 handsets). To simplify my life even further, I am using my Cell phone as my home phone. With all the free weekend and nights minutes, I really don't need any land line phone.

However, there are times when someone calls me and my cell phone is not around me, say upstair in the bedroom, and I am downstair. This is the time where I missed the cordless handsets the most, because I used to have them in every room.

I read about this Uniden phone back in January, and found it is probably what I need, so I pre-order it last month. It was finally available last Thursday and I received it today with an extra handset just to try it out.

I am not disappointed! This is a very well designed phone system. The menu is intuitive and easy to use, plus all the lights are my favorite blue :-). The handset is just like a clamshell motorola cellphone, even the icons in the menu. Probably a 256-color LCD, but it is a first for a cordless phone! Wallpaper and ringtone and even individual phonebook entry are configurable. You can even customize the handset from your PC using the included software and USB cable. It even has some PDA feature like calendar and appointment reminder in the handset. If I don't tell you, you might think I am talking about a new cellphone from Uniden.

Besides the very functional handset, and of course, you can plug a regular phone wire and use it as a regular expandable phone system with ansering machine. But the feature that attracted me buying this phone system is the bluetooth connection. I was wondering why no one has thought about this when bluetooth made popular a couple of years ago. I paired my Sony Ericsson S710i to the base unit, just like one will do with the cellphone to the headset, it found the device and paired it with no problem. I set the base unit to connect to S710i automatically, and viola! Just so happen my friend called me on my cellphone, all 2 handsets were ringing (so did the S710i). I pressed the "mobile" button, and pressed "Enter" to confirmed using S710i, and I was answering using the Uniden's headset. It even display caller ID on all the LCDs! Basically, my S710i is now my phone jack, and the whole Uniden system is plugged into it "wirelessly". Cordless + Wireless, what a wonderful solution!

Bluetooth cell phone is getting very popular recently, even the stubborn Samsung is making new phone with bluetooth capability. If you have a land line and a bluetooth-enabled cellphone, you could now switch between the regular phone line and your free cellphone minutes at will. Talking about the convenience of answering both using just one handset(and you can tell which one is ringing by the different ringtone you assigned them)!

The only thing on my wishlist for this phone is to be able to transfer phonebook from my cell phone to it via bluetooth. Since most bluetooth devices have this function, I can see a firmware update coming for this already great phone.

May be it is too early to review the quality and reliability of this phone system; may be I will add to my review later. For now, I like it... A LOT! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprised!
I was looking for a phone that would give me an answering machine, caller id, phone book and cordless. I received all of that. The only thing I am missing is the speakerphone. It does not have one. Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's KX-TG5240M utilizes the 5.8 GHz band and digital frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology for increased call security and range and for less interference. This system comes with one handset but can accommodate up to three more (for a total of four). Compatible with Caller ID/call waiting, the KX-TG5240M offers a 50-station caller ID memory and dialer, accessible through the handset's three-line backlit LCD. It also features talking caller ID, which audibly announces who's calling through the handset and base speakerphones. Rounding out the main features are an integrated digital answering system and a light-up antenna on the handset that flashes to alert you to new calls and messages. The handsets also offer a variety of ring tones and melodies to choose from.

The KX-TG5240M allows you to pre-program frequently called numbers, even for chain dialing (ideal for calling automated systems that require a series of numeric inputs). It's also Caller IQ compatible, a service provides updates on weather, sports, horoscopes, and more; the information is sent directly to your telephone and displayed on the handset screen. (Caller ID and call waiting require subscription through your phone company. Caller IQ is a fee based service that requires registration.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A good phone, not a great one
I bought the 5240 for my business and was happy with it right away.Since it's important for me to have my hands free while talking, I use a Panasonic headset (a cheapie). The voice quality is fine, and when I use the Voice Enhancement feature it's even better.I also have a wireless network (running at 2.8 GHz) and have run into no problems with the two frequencies running so close together.I'm able to walk well away from the base with no cut out problems, either.Talking Caller ID is cool, but not too useful. The handset by itself isn't too comfortable, but it's fine.

The main problem I've had is with the display on the handset.Suddenly, they became so dim I couldn't read them - but only on some of the menus. This became a little worse over the next week or so, so I exchanged. After looking at what was available, I exchanged it for another 5240 since I liked the first one so well.I ran into another display problem almost immediately with this one, but it wasn't bad enough to exchange.Six months later, I still have it and am living with the problem. When compared to sound quality, ease of use, and range, this is a minor problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe they fixed it?
I read the other reviews for this and many of them complained that the person at the other end would hear your voice garbled or distorted if you got too close to the base unit.We just bought a KX-TG5243M (same as the 5240 but it comes packaged with 3 handsets) on May 27, 2005, and it does not have that problem.I have even held the handset with the antenna literally touching the base unit antenna, and the person I was talking to could hear me clearly. So I guess either the problem did not exist on every unit, or Panasonic has fixed it.
Other than that, the phone has everything we want, including some features that were sorely missing on our old Uniden TRU-5885:On it you could not have a conference call with both handsets - only with a handset and the speakerphone in the base unit. And every time the power went out I had to get the manual out to find out how to set the clock again, despite the fact that every time a call came in the Caller ID showed the CORRECT time.Panasonic has managed to make their phone smart enough to use the caller ID info to update its clock automatically.

5-0 out of 5 stars About 3 months and problem free
I have had this system with one extension phone for about 3 months now and have had no problems with it. Great sound quality, no glitches in performance or operation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Loved the features, hated the sound quality
I bought this unit because of other reviews I had read concerning wireless connections and cordless phones.Well, they were wrong. The extra handset was in the room with our wireless router for our computers. You had to leave the room to get a phone call. There was nothing but static on the phone.

The base unit had some problems too with sound. It would screech and whistle about 15-20 seconds into a call, and that was standing right in front of the base.

I really did like some of the features like the speaker phone/intercom.All the whistles and bells aren't worth anything if the phone doesn't work.I took this back and got an AT & T E5960.So far we are satisfied with that one.

4-0 out of 5 stars One other feature is missing
My old Panasonic answering machine had the ability to call a pre-programmed number to notify that there is a message. They call it 'to page', but since the pagers have long gone - it just calls my cell phone and hangs up. That is the feature that I will miss a lot!

Also, I don't see it offered at Amazon, but Panasonic also has model KX-TG5243: same as this one but with three handsets. If you are planning to buy this and a handset - 5243 combination is cheaper ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Low quality phone with a big price tag
Less than 8 months after I purchased this phone, all of the number buttons stopped working and I already had to purchase a new battery.Luckily, the one year warranty was still in effect so I was able to return it to the company and they sent me a new one.We had the new one for about 4 months when all of the number buttons stopped working on it and the battery needed replaced once again!!!!This was a very expensive phone and the quality is terrible.Because of this experience, I will never purchase another motorola phone again, and I will advise others against purchasing motorola products.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuk. Bad battery, buttons stopped after few months.
I bought 3 of these phones, within a few months all of them had battery life issues and the buttons on 2 phones don't work anymore.

Bad motorola, bad!

1-0 out of 5 stars Keypad doesn't work!
I have two of these phones and both started to have trouble with one number--eventually the whole keypad goes out.I have heard of others having the same problem.Motorola was no help--told me to clean the keypad. They obviously know it is a consistent problem and flawed phone.DO NOT BUY!

5-0 out of 5 stars They must abuse their phonesbecause mine is great
I've owned my phone for over a year and have two of them and have had no trouble with them. They are solid and reliable and better than most phones I've had including panasonic. Maybe the other people toss them on the floor all of the time or take showers with them, I'm not sure? I would buy them again in a second but fortunately I won't have to since they have never given me any problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE
Ditto the reviews below. The "on" button on the handset is not working so the only way to answer the phone is by pushing the "speakerphone" button. To my disgust, Motorola tells me that since the phone is no longer under warranty they will not replace it and - believe it or not - there is no authorized service center that can repair it.In other words, if it breaks the only option is to send it to the landfill.UNBELIEVABLE! ... I've been using an S12 for two years now and really enjoy the comfortable headset.I am on the phone for up to four hours per day and don't get any ear fatigue or shoulder problems, but do find that the speaker is too loud, even on the lowest settings with my AT&T two line phone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good.
This is the third cordless phone I have bought in a month. The first, a Motorola, had terrible echoes and sound. That one went back. The second, a GE, was fine, for the first three weeks. Then the answering machine shut down erasing all the messages every time I put the phone in the cradle. That one went back. I've only had the Panasonic a couple of days, cut so far so good. The sound is decent, though I would like the handset to be a little louder. But everything else works and I have to admit, the talking caller ID is pretty cool. Hopefully this one will keep working.
Update: A week later and still working. I just wanted to add, however, despite what the Amazon site says, this only has one handset and is not expandable.
One more cool feature I have found. You can subscribe to the Caller IQ serivce to get weather and other things on the phone. This is OK, but the best part is you can use the web site to import your Outlook contacts. Then you can check the ones you want on your phone and they are automatically downloaded to the address book in the phone. Saves lots of work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
I have had this phone now about 3 months and I am VERY HAPPY with it. IT has all the things and want and many more, The hand sets are very clear and I love the fact I can check voice mail on any hand set that goes with it I do not have to run to the main answering machine to check the voice mail. The range of the hand sets is great had no problem at all with this.So far I love everything with this phone, It is much better than either of the last two phone I have had.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good phone, with some funky features...
I bought this phone (plus an additional handset) to replace my old Sony 2.4GHz phone. The old phone interfered with my home WiFi network. This new phone, although it is a dual-mode phone, claims not to interfere and so far that has been the case for me.

There are a number of nice features on this phone. Both the handsets and the base station have built-in speaker phones. The answering machine is easy to program. The handsets are easy to set up with the base station (a near impossibility with my old Sonys). The phones are reasonably stylish in a utilitarian sort of way and have enough heft that you won't mind using them.

The phones and base station have LCD displays for programming. The phone has a color display and you can choose "wallpaper" for it (right...). The spare handset I bought was only black and white (I could have chosen another color handset). By default it shows a smiley face. The ringers are a bit cloying (you can set them to play music or choose from several obnoxious ring styles). Here's the digital revolution turning something simple into a needlessly complex toy.

If you ignore all the stupid bells and whistles, though, the phone does everything I ask of it. It was very easy to setup and it works well. Other brands aren't that much better in terms of "silly quotient" and don't offer the range of useful features. I would give this phone 3 1/2 stars if I could, but it's pretty good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware... it's another dual-band device
This one looked so good, so I went to Circuit City yesterday to take a look.Right on the box, it brags about using 5.8 GHz AND 2.4 GHz to provide the best performance.Seems that all the so-called 5.8 GHz devices built by V-tech, including those V-tech builds for other companies like AT&T, are dual band.Beware, if you are worried about interference to your computer wireless network. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best phone ever built!
I've been a huge Sony Ericsson fan since they launched the T610/6 line, but now i found the KK700 wich is full of gadgets the previous phones didn't have. This has everything you'll ever need, it has a built-in VGA camera with 4X digital zoom and led flash you can use with Photo and Video, 40Mb internal memory, yeah!! i know, it's a lot. It can play MP3's, You can record and play Video on your phone, not like the Motorola V300, V600, and V3 Razr, you can only play video, it has an FM Radio Tunner that u use with the stereo headphones provided, and last but not least, the Game graphics now use 3D Techonolgy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Personal SE Favorite
I've only had this phone for two months and I've done so many things with it.I've been able to capture precious moments with the vga camera, record audio clips of funny jokes, listen to mp3sand the radio while jogging, and so much more! The K700i is a perfect upgrade for T610/T616 users. The K700i has everything you could imagine on an affordable phone.VGA camera, 40 MB memory, stylish looks, radio, MP3 player, Java games, WAP capabilites.

This phone is one of the best phones Sony Ericsson has made to date.

Here are some of the pros/cons (yes, there are a few.).

Pros: 65k colors, price, Bluetooth/IrDA, Mp3/Video/Camera/Games, Radio (User programmable up to 20 presets), WAP capabilities, style, size

Cons: unsturdy casing, battery life, low 40 MB memory (definitely not enough for this phone as it functions as a video camera, camera, mp3 player, and mini-game "console")

Overall, this is a great buy if you loved the T610/6 and Sony Ericsson phones!

5-0 out of 5 stars The MOTHER of all Cell Phones
Now, if you are like me, and require sleek, stylish, has-everything phone; this is THE ONE TO GET!!!
This phone has:
- Brilliant Color
- WAP and WEB access
- A Media Player ( that allows you to downloand a few MP3s and PLAY THEM AS RINGTONES OR JUST AS MUSIC ON YOUR PHONE)!
- A Radio ( Yes, you heard me, a RADIO!!!you can get reception to any FM radio station even when you CAN'T get services)
- The CAMERA Feature( with 4x Digital ZOOM and Panoramic feature!)
- Videocamera capability. ( You wanna record an event, now you can. AND, you can decide how long you would like to record!)
- BLUETOOTH! BLUETOOTH! BLUETOOTH ( so that you can connect your wireless headset ( Jabra!) to your phone and your Palm Tungsten too). Because of this Bluetooth feature, you can transform your phone to a ReMote Control for your computer!!
- JAVE-enabled games ( and you can downloadother games from the Sonyericsson's website)
- 40 MBs of MEMORY!!! (My Palm Pilot does not even have that much memory!!!)
-Its TRIBAND, that means, you have an INTERNATIONAL PHONE MY DEAR!!!
-And the List goes on......

The only downside to this Monstrosity is its battery power. The battery life on this phone is limited. Unlike the Sony T-610, which can last a good week without charging, the Sony K-700i can last about 3-4 days tops. But that is a small price to pay, for so many features. Give it a try, you will be happy you did!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars this phone have all.
i bought this phone on 6/11/2004 and works perfect! this is the best phone i ever had, because it got all the things that you need just name it, the only thing that not have is memory slot, but for me is not a problem.
PROS:
1-features like radio, camera, ui icons, screen resolution, infrared, bluetooth, connectivity, video camera, media player, reception, keypad works great!, pc sync, sounds, call quality, mp3, memory of 41mb, design, the quickly response of the keypad and the user interface with 3d icons, the calendar rocks, small size and the phone games.

CONS:
2- no memory slot, and the batery life is not as they say. the phone with bluetooth discharge in about 2 days, but without it the charge is 5 and a half days.

i had a motorola v600 and the phone freeze and have alot of bad things, then a E398 is a v600 but is not a clam shell design and have memory slot of 64mb but freeze too, then samsung E715, then a nokia 7610 and i have to say that nokia hit a homerun with this phone is great but not as the k700i, and now i got the sony ericsson k700i and i have to say that the SE k700i is the best of all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best phone I have EVER owned!
What can I say?Read the online reviews and you will find that this is one GREAT phone. The screen is gorgeous.Reception is WAY better than T610 on exact same network.A lot of people complain about battery life. With the newest firmware (R2L0001) this is not an issue.Bluetooth is fast and reliable.Syncs out of the box using iSync on the Mac.Menu navigation is fast and responsive.Get this phone, you will NOT be disappointed.

P.S.I use it with T-Mobile in the US ... Read more

Great weather station.
Buyer alert:Don't buy the THC138 if you need a water remote probe; only the THC268 is compatible with this weather station.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Weather Station
My weather station works great, everything seems to be dead on accurate. The remote sensor works further away then I thought it would, way out in our backyard. It's probably about 100 feet away and is outside the house. It doesn't have any problem with rain hitting it like I thought it might. Anyone who needs a weather station with the features this has will be happy with this purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars very nice features
this thing does it all, and is one of the better looking units from oregon scientific.they really need to fire their industrial designer because most of the products look dorky.

i have had no problems with the base unit or the remote transmitter, it can even transmit from inside my freezer!

the only issue i have is i wish the back light stayed on longer (or at least as long as the back light button is pressed).

i highly recommend this unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't get it 'til you get it
My friend found out about this videophone, bought FOUR of them for his family and then hounded me endlessly to get one. It's easy to think you know how a videophone might work and imagine it's somewhat like using a webcam, but really you have no idea until you see what it's like to press one button and see someone right on that screen.
For those of you out there who hate the thought of having to get dressed and be all presentable to answer the phone, you can just turn off the screen and use it like a normal phone until you get your pants on :)
Speaking of which, imagine what this product will do for couples in long-distance relationships, never mind the grandparents and family scattered around the world who you can now see in real-time! And you can talk ALL DAY for free.
I can't stress enough the insane coolness of Motorola's OJO.

5-0 out of 5 stars No computer needed for OJO !
My mother is 79, lives in NJ. I got her a Motorola OJO, and my brother in AZ got one. My mother burst into tears 1st time she saw the grand girls in 2 1/2 years. So life like, almost like being there, she could "almost touch them". So much better than a phone call, so cool. They OJO each other alot in the few weeks they had them. Excellent quality, picture like the TV, very life like. Nice speaker and nice features. Easy to use, no computer. I highly recommend it, price should come down if the cable companies start to offer it. 5 STARS *****

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Straightforward Calculator Available
I have the TI-89 Titanium and the HP-49G+, both are excellent calculators especially for programmers. But if I need to have mathematical models/programs, I use Mathcad or Matlab on my PC anyway, hence, I don't use the TI-89T or HP-49G for that purpose. Although there are fancier/faster models available now, the elegant keypad and menu system of the TI-86 is unmatched. For me and for most people I know (mostly fellow engineers), the TI-86 (and HP-48GX) are the perennial favorites. There is a dramatic difference between the TI-86 and the TI-89 as far as the menu system goes. The TI-89 has so many functions that the only way to really implement it is through a "windows" type menu system. The TI-86 on the other hand, has all the critical functions on the keypad - which is more efficient.(i.e. x^2, 1/x, complex, convert, log, etc..... are all built-in to the keypad of TI-86).

Indeed, the TI-89T and HP-49G+ are faster, has more functions, and has more memory than the TI-86.But for the day-to-day engineering and scientific calculations, I think the TI-86 is far more efficient and straightforward.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Graphing Design but problems with wear and tear.
i am actually shopping for an HP49 or similar. My experience with two calculators from texas instrument the TI86 and TI83+ has been positive and actually excellent if ease of use and graphics performance is the criterions. They are very well designed and the graphics as of the last generation TI's were superior than there previous hp48g.
However, the problem with both the TI86 and TI83+ is in how long they last. I bought a used TI86 in about 1997 and it lasted maybe one more year before it stopped working correctly. Recently a TI83+ I had which from the standpoint of functionality was a fine calculator stopped working after generally light use after 5 years. considering I used relatively infrequently, I wasn't satisfied.I used to own an early HP back in the 80's and it never stopped working for at least 6 or seven years until it was stolen out of my backpack. I was loyal then to them, but the last generation of calculators seemed to have some design flaws(hp48g) particularly around graphics. This generation seems to be immitating the TI's now and if they are built as well as the early ones, it is worth paying a little extra. But i haven't tried them out yet.
The last one I had(48g) was stolen or lost somewhere I believe but it continued working fine for maybe two years.
After spending onehundred plus dollars Iexpect more from a calculator in terms of wear and tear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful calculator
I bought this around mid 1997 and I'm still using it to this day.
It's helped me through AP Calc, Calc II, Calc III, Differential Equations, Advanced Engineering Math, SATs, GREs, Fundamentals of Engineering exam for EIT certification, and etc...

I actually bought a TI-89 around soph year of college just to complement the TI-86.

You see, the TI-86 is a SOLID engineering calculator. It's got fast units conversions, an intuitive and FAST menu system BUT it lacks "pretty print", handling of units for math (keeps the units throughout equations, calculators), and integration/differentiation with the variables in place (it doesn't just evaluate it). With the right software, the TI-89 is a very powerful math tool.

I used the TI-89 primarily for theoretical math but came in handy for standardized tests as well.

I would recommend getting both the TI-89 and TI-86 and start familiarizing yourself with both calculators before you start tackling tests. Check the rules and regs for calculators also - standardized tests should allow the use of the 86 and 89.

Overall, the TI-86 is a solid math tool - notice I say TOOL because that's what it is. If you have no idea what you're doing in class, the TI-86 won't give you an A.

My recommendation is to get both the TI-86 and TI-89.
Just FYI, I'm still using the TI-86 at work. The buttons show some wear and I lost the first line of the LCD because I dropped it in college. Nonetheless it's still chugging along.

Also, slap in four 750mAH NiMH batteries. You will NOT regret this because these calculators drain alkaline batteries in half a semester of intensive use. We didn't have cheap NiMH batteries back in the day - TI actually pushed the use of Rayovac Renewals (remember those rechargeable alkalines that only lasted 5 charges?) and our other choice was NiCd. Forget all that. Slap in four Energizer 750mAh NiMH batteries and you'll save yourself a LOT of money in the long run. That means more money for video games and other forms of entertainment in college.

5-0 out of 5 stars Need a calc for engineering work?
Or require lots of fast unit conversions?

Get the TI-86.

It's menu system is extremely intuitive and easy to use. You can fire away units conversions and simple math w/o running into any problems. In Comparison, the TI-89 is more powerful, has a better CPU, and has more memory - but the TI-89 shines in its simplicity. It's quite powerful in the right hands and is more useful in the workplace. The TI-89 is more suited towards the classroom environment.

I bought one of the very first TI-86's in 1997 and used it throughout high school, college, and a few graduate courses. I still carry it around at work because it's been a big help.

I dropped it once and lost the first 2 lines on the LCD, but it's still chugging along fine.

Just get 4 NiMH AAA batteries and you'll be fine for years to come. I made the mistake of using Alkalines, Rechargeable Alkalines, and NiCD batteries back in the late 90s when NiMH's weren't readily available.

5-0 out of 5 stars You got to know whats up( From a programmer, I know. )
I used to have a ti-83, and a ti-83+, but the 86 is the best of the three. I am real into programming the calculator. The 86 can have variables and Lbl's with up to 8 charectors, opposed to 2 for the 83, 83+. It can store almost unlimited amount of pics, unlike the 83,83+, which can only store 10. The calculator also does conversions. Everything from temp to energy to power, making it save all that time on tests and homework. I read another review that said it could not do absolute value(which is called abs), and convert fractions to decimals(>frac, and >dec), but it can. They aren't under a bunch of subfolders either, because you can easily create your own custom menu to paste anything you want on the screen. This way is even faster. It also comes with an excellent instructional manual. By far the best choice between 83, 83+, and 86. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good clarity/reception -- but too SMALL!
I've been using these phones for about three months now -- and the only problem I've had with them is the one I noticed right away -- they are TOO SMALL!
They're about the size of your average "candy-bar" (non-flip) cell phone. And that's handy if you want to carry it around the house in your pocket, but a pain in the (...)if you're trying to talk on it while doing something else.
If I try to hold the phone in the crook of my shoulder while I'm doing something -- the microphone part at the bottom gets jammed up against my chin and the person on the other end can't hear me.(I know this because I've been on both ends of this conversation attempt)

And if I try to put it in the crook of my neck while I'm on hold, I very often hit the "end" button and hang up the call.

It's a PAIN!

Also, the buttons are REALLY SMALL -- and half the time I end up pushing the wrong buttons when I'm dialing!

And I'm no oaf, here, kids -- I'm a regular-sized woman.

The phone itself WORKS GREAT -- so if you have tiny fingers and are okay with always using the speakerphone -- I'm sure it'd be great for you.But if you're looking for something a little more "traditional" for your home-phone -- I'd say look on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent System
I purchased Dual Handset package along with an addtional 2 handsets for a total of four cordless phones.

All are being used in a VERY LARGE 1850's Victorian home and there is no distortion or lack of signal anywhere in the house.

The intercom feature is VERY useful as well as the ability to synchronize the phone book on one phone with every other phone in the system.

After using several different cordless phones I find the Uniden's the best I've ever used.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
You get a lot for your money with this (or these) phones.First of all, it's a 2.4 GHz Digital phone, which means you don't have to worry about people intercepting your phone call.It also looks nice.

The phone is a bit small, but feels good on the ears.It has the standard features like Caller ID, speed dialing, lots of different rings to choose from, and a memory bank for 100 names and numbers.

But what I like about it is that it sounds clear both to me and the other party.I like that there is an extra phone which doesn't need a separate phone jack.I like the orange glow on the keypad and Caller ID screen.I like option of having the phone answer when you pick it from the cradle.I liked the price for what I was getting.Plus you can add 2 more phones if you have a big family. Also, there is a battery indicator which indicates when you need to charge it.

There are a few minor cons like the size of the keypad. The buttons are a bit small. The owners manual says the battery will last about a year with normal use. That's not very long, in my view.

In summary, I believe there is good value in this phone

In summary, this 2.4 GHz digital cordless phone provides great value and security for your whole family.

4-0 out of 5 stars So Many Functions!
After reading the very helpful reviews online I decided to purchase this phone. I did hear the tinny sound described but it's not that bothersome. The phone works exactly like a baby monitor if you want it to-it is awesome. It has fun ring tones and lots of features. We do not have caller ID so I can't use all the functions but that's ok. It is a great multi phone for the price.I like how the display and keypad light up too. The speaker is also great if you need to set the phone down to talk or wear it. I never write reviews but I felt I needed to share this one. Buy it today!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons

I have this thing here are the plusses and minuses:

Pro
---
Pretty clear sound

speakerphone on handsets

Easy to read lightup display

headset friendly

some nice phonebook features where you can copy phonebooks between handsets

you can pick up answering machine messages from handset

new message indicators on handsets

intercom function is handy in a large house

includes a sort of walkie talkie feature in addition to intercom

takes a total of 4 handsets, extras are $30-40 each.

no wire needed for handset. Only base station needs a phone wire.

handsets come with charger

If you use the musical ringers the phones will not ring on the first ring. This is a "pro" for me because I have a computer that hangs up on certain caller-id numbers/strings but only after the first ring.

Don't seem to interfere with 802.11G WiFi

Cons
----
baby monitor function is no substiture for a real baby monitor. You can only use it on battery at the receiver and it makes a load "shirp" at the receiver when activated potentiallywaking up the baby. The battery will not last the night in baby monitor mode so it's only good for daytime naps and such. I sometimes use it at night and have to switch handsets at around 3:00Am when it complains about low battery. This is unfortunate because it is much clearer than my existing baby monitor.

small handsets, hard to rest on shoulder

no way to adjust ringer on intercom/baby monitor it's loud! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 10+ Stars! Superb Expandable Cordless Phone System
Awesome phone! Let me first say that within this past year my husband and I bought every expandable and non expandable phone available. Yes we tried them all from Uniden to Motorolla to Vtech and this one blows them all out of the water!

Pro's
1. Very user friendly. I am not the type of person to read instructions and with this phone I didn't need to.

2. 5.8 GHz is awesome! I live in a large apartment and I can walk all the way down to my laundry room (about 100 yards away) and still have a crystal clear connection!

3. Phonebook holds up to 50 numbers plus the phonebook is transferable meaning you only have to program one phone and then you can send it to the other 2 handsets.

4. Great speaker phone. Loud and very clear.

5. Light-up indicator to let you know if you have a call coming in, a good feature if you have sleeping babes or loved ones who wake up when the phone rings and you constantly turn your ringer off. Also lets you know if you have a voicemail waiting.

6. Backlight is bright orange and makes the screen easy to read.

7. Great ringtones. You can download ringtones to this phone if you wish, but I choose not to.

8. You can assign different ringtones to different people in your phonebook and also different colors for the light-up indicator to different people. This way you know who is calling without having to run to the phone, whether the ringer is on or off.

9. Great battery life. I left my phone off the charger for 2 days once and still had battery life. I use a phone constantly throughout the day and this phone holds up better than any phone I have ever owned.

10. Very attractive and the perfect size. All of the other phones I owned were either to big and bulky or so small and flimsy.

11. Did I mention that this phone has crystal clear reception and is so easy to use!!

Con's
1. I was told that if you download a song to this phone, you can only download one song to one phone, so you would have to download up to 3 times to get one song on all your phones. Not a big deal to me cause I don't really care to download songs to my phone.

2. 3 handsets was a bit much even for my large 1200 sqft apartment. The store didn't have a 2 handset version though I do think Panasonic makes one. Not really a con nor Panasonics fault for that either.

That's about it for the con's. Not too many at all huh! This really is a great phone. It may not have the best ringtones or the coolest downloadable features like some phones do, but it has what is really important and then some. ... Read more
