It's also expandable, supporting two additional handsets for a total of four (model DCX640, sold separately). Sleek and stylish, the DCT 646 operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency and employs digital technology for clearer, more intelligible reception than traditional 900 MHz phones offer. An auto-scan features automatically detects the best channel available.

Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the DCT 6465 has 100 programmable caller ID memory locations. A memory location transfer feature lets users synchronize the memory locations of their handsets. An auto-talk function allows you to answer calls simply by removing the phone from its cradle, while the display-and-dial feature lets you easily scroll through the list of calls and dial with the touch of a button. A voicemail indicator lets you know when you have received messages.

Twenty distinctive ring options are provided, while handset and ringer volume controls allow you to easily adjust the phone's settings to your liking. A page button on the base makes finding a lost handset quick and painless, and the menu-driven handset LCD and dual keypads make operation easy. Three-way conferencing is available between two handsets and an outside call, while the call transfer feature lets you route incoming calls to a different handset. Both tone and pulse dialing modes are provided in case you need to switch to one or the other. Wall-mountable, the DCT 6465 is headset compatible and comes with a belt clip for hands-free operation. It is backed with a one-year warranty on both parts and labor.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Relief!
This phone replaced a very expensive Siemens system that was simply awful.I love this phone! The clarity is excellent and the handset is very comfortable. It has lots of great features that the more expensive phone did not have. The quality is outstanding overall.I have a second home, and will buy this phone to put in that one as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent phone - withstood lot of abuse from my 2 year old
son and still works almost perfect. The headset broke recently after lot of use.I never bothered to check for the range though. It works good in my house in general.

As with any 2.4 GHz phones this gives lot of disturbance when using close to wireless computer network connections esp., when lot of data transfer is happening. If this is a real problem for you I suggest you get 5.8 GHz phones.I bought this for about $59.00 in Costco about one year back.I thought it was a good deal at that time.May be still it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Started great; ended a dud
Liked the phone look and feel. Very easy to use and intuitive to program. The range was never much better than a 900 Mhz spread sprectrum phone that I had previously. The key labels on the handsets have started disappearing with in 4 months of use. They could have used better paint for the labels to remain. The handset has started having an echo already and is nearly unusable. Overall the quality seems to be lacking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, as these things go
This is definitely my favorite cordless phone of about five that I have owned over the years. This surprised me, because I hated the 900MHz Uniden that I had a few years ago.But Uniden appears to have learned a lot.

First, the things I like about this phone:

+ The outgoing message and clock are preserved thorough a power outage! FINALLY - it's taken me ten years to find a phone where this worked right.

+ The handsets are small and light enough to slip into my pants pocket, and (wonder of wonders) it's really difficult to accidentally hit a button while it's in there, because the buttons are relatvely tiny and almost flush with the phone surface. If you have big fingers this might not be a good thing, but it's great for me.

+ Reasonably good range (at least 400 ft outside, unobstructed).

+ Excellent NiMH battery capacity - I get a week of standby time, and Uniden claims 6 hours of talk time, which I have no reason to doubt.

+ A speakerphone on each handset (as well as the base) - this is GREAT.Also a standard headset jack, another must-have feature for me.The handset's speakerphone is not particularly loud, but it's more than adequate for a normal work (desk) environment, it seems to work well, and I've had no complaints about it from callers on the other end.

+ The phonebook and the caller ID list can be accessed while on a call. The call timer stays visible for 10 seconds after the call ends.

+ Hold/transfer/page functions let you page or transfer a call to a specific handset. You assign a name to each handset, which makes this easy.

+ The system handles multiple phones and handsets the way I want it to:by default, anyone picking up a connected extension phone or handset is automatically connected to the call, unless you have turned on "privacy mode".

+ Each handset can screen incoming calls and access all answering machine functions, including memo. You can also record a call in progress, although the machine beeps intermittently when doing so, and the short recording capacity limits the usefulness of this feature.

+ The "wealkie talkie" direct-link mode is a cool feature, although I haven't had any need to use it yet.

+ A lighted "Do Not Disturb" button on the base turns off all ringers on all handsets, the answering machine speaker, etc. This is truly a Great feature - I only wish I could also activate/deactivate it from a handset. The handset display still lights up when there's an incoming call, also nice.

+ I expect that the 2.4GHz frequency-hopping spread-spectrum communications would make it difficult for someone to eavesdrop on your conversations (just a guess).

+ Perhaps my favorite feature of this unit is one that is difficult to describe: it generally just works the way I expect it to.Most consumer electronics products seem to get this wrong, where every feature is either awkward or annoying. On my previous phone, for example, the call timer would disappear the moment I hung up, and it was impossible for someone to pick up an extension and join the conversation.A lot of default behaviors on this phone can be changed through the menus, which is great if you're not afraid of menus (I'm not). Most of the operations (e.g. deleting all messages) are easy and intuitive, and usually just work the way you expect them to.This is astoundingly rare in the world of consumer electronics.

Although there are a lot of buttons on the handset, I prefer this to putting everything in the menus, and I like the balance Uniden has struck in putting the most-used functions on buttons and the less-used ones in menus.

There are of course some things about the phone that I think could use improvement:

- Occasionally the signal gets flaky when I walk around the house while on a call, like being on a cell phone with poor reception. When this happens the person on the other end complains that my voice is dropping out.

- Sound quality is good, but not excellent.I occasionally hear the annoying scratchy, tinny echo that another reviewer complained about, but only rarely, and it doesn't last long.If it was persistent, it certainly would be unacceptable.

- I have Caller ID, but my telco doesn't offer "Caller ID with Name", so only the number comes through.I wishthe phone would display the corresponding name from its phonebook for the incoming number, as my last cordless did.The phonebook's distinctive ring feature helps to identify an incoming call, but it would be a huge improvement to also display the name.

- There is no "mute" button - Mute is accessed through the menus. However, since it's the first menu item it only takes two button presses to activate or deactivate it.

- The answering machine's fixed sound quality and available time (12 minutes) are both mediocre, though adequate for me.12 minutes is not going to be enough for some folks who like to leave their messages on the machine for days or weeks.

- It takes an awful lot of buttons to enter a name in the phonebook (e.g., 8 button presses to get a lower-case 's').

- The handsets are so small that they're difficult to clamp between yout ear and shoulder (just like a cell phone).I suppose that's the trade-off for having a phone small enough to slip easily into your pants pocket.

- The Caller ID list does not store a '1' before the numbers; when you want to dial a number in the Caller ID list you have to first press a button to add the '1' prefix. There should be a menu option to make adding the prefix the default.

Overall, I really like this phone, much better than any of my previous cordless phones, and I would certainly recommend it.I can't offer any information about possible interference from 2.4GHz wireless routers, since I don't have any other 2.4GHz devices in my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a phone
I appreciate a good cordless phone, but I am not willing to pay any price to get one. This phone was priced well, looks great and, best of all, performs excellently. I've been using it for several months now and my only complaint was recently eliminated by switching phone carriers. (Caller ID captures phone numbers with the "1" as a prefix, so you have to re-enter the entire number if you want to re-dial or store one of those numbers.) I find that my new Voice over Internet Protocol phone carrier (Vonage) works perfectly with this phone. It is compatible with what I consider to be leading-edge technology. Two things I particularly like are battery life and the built-in speaker phone on the handset. Range is good too here in the middle of NYC. Overall, I recommend this phone very highly. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Beware - i5803 does NOT work with 5881 phone!

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not work properly
I bought this phone because I live in Japan and most cordless phones are off-limits.I found this in the Base Exchange and was excited.A cordless we are allowed to use.My first problem was the charger would not work so I began charging the bateries in the base unit. Then the memory button does not work.I have a difficult time accessing the memory button and the off button.Because I am using the base unit to charge the bateries the batery pack is now loose and the phone often will not work even with a full charge. It blacks out when I set it down.I have been very disapointed in this product and would advise every one to NOT buy it.It is too expensive to only get 5 good months of use out of.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent phone that doesn't interfere
This is a decent handset. I use the speaker and headset functions a lot. I've had it for nearly two years now and have ery little trouble.

On the downside, button pushing through all of the options can be a bit tedious, and the intercom function, though useful, can be a pain to get to. Five to six button pushes to call another handset.

Another aspect to be aware of is that the VTech site itself seems to have the lowest prices... $44.95 for the handset as of 12/20/04 plus $1.95 foe shipping. Amazon really needs to keep pace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good phone
We bought the base and 3 extra handsets. The phones work great inside around the yard and even in the adjacent houses around us. They do not however have the range we expected. The reception is clear, the intercom and call transfer are great as is the vmail indicator. We have never had battery issues or interference with our wireless network or other appliances as some people have complained. For the price they are an EXCELLENT buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars cordless phones won't charge
don't waste your money.. i had bought a base unit and 3 handset units.the base works fine, the handset units all have problems charging.Vtech tech support said it's the batteries.. they send me new batteries, but the problem still remains.. i think it's the design of the handset charger, does not make good contact to properly charge the units. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Who came up with these controls?
Usually Sony comes up with great products, but this one is a bit shaky.

There are so many controls, so many abbreviations for what they do, that it's a bit overwhelming, even after owning this thing for a few months.I'm use to having the major buttons be record, play, rewind, fast forward, next file.On this unit, there is this incredibly complex big button that controls a dozen functions, some of them you will never need. Not only do you have to fumble around sliding this thing forward, backwards, up, down, and in, but you have to know what the crytic abbreviation that pops up on the LCD screen means. Then there are a few other tiny switches and buttons all over the unit you have to remember how to use, again with little heiroglyphics that suggest it's function.I guess I should have played with one of these units before I bought it -- I bought it based on it's features, most of which I will never use.

If the team of engineers who built this device got to redesign the iPOD, there would add about twenty stainless steel switches, knobs, buttons and connectors and call it the "Apple YTD-TU652 Portable Digital Music Playing Device"... now would you think that would be a successful product?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Voice Recorder
Works great for voice recording.Records hours of lectures.
Upload to computer works great and you can scroll anywhere into the recording to listen to segments. As you scroll just look at the time to decide what part to review.Battery life is good. The buttons work ok for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Overkill
I returned this, after really trying hard to like it.I have large hands, and, the buttons were so small I kept hitting the wrong ones. Further, you have to delicately push back and forth one switch to go from function to function; I don't mean up and down length-wise, but, perpendicular to the layout of the switch, which is extremely counter-intuitive. Also, I could not accept having to toggle through several menu windows just to allow me to erase part of what I was dictating. I really wanted to simply use this like an old fashioned microcassette: forward, backward, erase mistakes and dictate over, but, also have the luxury of voice recognition. It flat-out did not work. Try something else!

4-0 out of 5 stars Light, easy to carry, a little delicate though...
Buttons are very small, so large handed/fingered people might have trouble with them. Nice sound quality on SP (7 hr); LP (15 hr) is the usual MP3 on low resolution warble, ST is pretty good, but creates pretty bulky mono-sounding files, unless you're using external stereo mics, or a stereo line-in.5 user folders for sorting - can do Add or Overwrite, but takes about 2-3 clicks to change the mode.Display normally stays on, but it's like a digital watch with a backlight.Sound output is quite audible for a little wafer speaker.

Bought as a replacement for a micro-cassette, and used for vocal presentation preparation, so I like the scan/review features and the variable speed playback.Vocal-Up does a modest job of basically compressing the input to equalize amplitude (think of it as auto-gain).

Delicate refers to the overall feel in that it's pretty much all plastic, and I'm worried about dropping it and having a lot of damage from a fall. But that's what one gets for the price, and the size (which is like a couple of matchboxes stacked vertically). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is 802.11 Friendly
Another poster mentioned that s/he couldn't get a response from V-Tech as to whether this phone is WiFi safe. However, according to V-Tech's web site, this phone is WiFi safe. Take a look at the manufacturer's page at http://www.vtechphones.com/vtechui/store/dsp_product.cfm?itemID=b02333e4-1056-4332-ba4d-773b18c36a2a.

This makes sense. The phone operates on the 5.8GHz frequency. Most WiFi users are using 802.11b or 802.11g - both of which operate at 2.4GHz. Different Frequency == no interference. Now if you're one of the few people using 802.11a, which does operate at 5.8 GHz, you might want to be a bit more skeptical of the WiFi safe claim.

3-0 out of 5 stars 802.11a compatability?
I called V-Tech customer service to see if this phone is compatable with 802.11a wireless, and they could not give me an answer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Took three times but I found a winner!
I'll jump right in and say what I didn't like about this phone. The handset speakerphone is extremely bad, constantly cutting in and out made the phone unusable in this mode.I called Vtech customer service and they told me to unplug the phone for a couple of minutes and then plug it back in and try it, but that didn't help either.Figuring I got a bad one I went back up to Office Depot to get another and guess what, this one did the exact same thing.Vtech has a problem with these phones.

Aside from the speakerphone in the handset problem the phone worked great. The software which installs on your PC and allows you do download ringtones and photos worked very good. The screen on the phone was very sharp.

By the way the speakerphone on the base worked very very good, to bad they couldn't have done a better job on the handset's speakerphone.

If it wasn't for the terrible speakerphone on the handset I would have given this phone 5 stars and would still own it.

Update:6-11-05

After using the Vtech phone I tried the color models that Uniden and Panasonic had to offer. The Panasonic had a very good screen but lacked the volume I needed. The Uniden's flip phone was nice but the screen was way below the quality of the Vtech and Panasonic and Unidens software was not good at all.Sending info to and from the phone was very slow.

After taking the Panasonic back I decided to try the Vtech again but this time I went to another Office Depot. This new phone has worked flawlessly and didn't exibit the same handset speakerphone problems as the first two.

It's my opinion now that of the three color screen phones the Vtech is much better than Panasonic and Uniden. I'd now give it a full 5 stars.

Product Description

The Panasonic KX-TG2420B is a GigaRange Digital Cordless Phone System, based on 2.4 GHz Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum Technology. That's a mouthful, but what does it mean? This technology "hops" constantly through a range of available channels to reduce interference and to provide improved security against eavesdropping. And since it is all digital technology, you get long range and incredible clarity.Kids sleeping? The antenna will signal you silently! Panasonic found a way to shorten the handset antenna while still maintaining the long range that Panasonic customers have become accustomed to. But what's even cooler is that the base of the antenna - which lights up - will alert you to an incoming call (or a message waiting for you). The light-up indicator will flash quickly to show that you have an incoming call, and it will flash slowly to let you know you have a new message in your voice mailbox. So turn off the ringer, let the kids sleep, and never miss a call.Put the phone down while you talk. Having a handset speakerphone may not seem like such a big deal-until you have to call an automated phone system. By the time you press "2" and return the phone to your ear, you missed half the next option! And when they put you on hold for ten minutes, do you really need to hold the phone? Not with the handset speakerphone. Just listen along, and press a button or pick up when it's convenient. You'll think up other great uses, like letting Grandma and Grandpa listen to their new grandchild at the same time, painting your nails as you talk to your best friend, or just being able to set the phone down while you talk.See who's calling, even if you're already on the phone. With Call Waiting Caller ID you get the best of both worlds. Now when you get a beep, you can see who's calling before you answer. ... Read more

Features are nice, with no extra charges for loading music and photos onto the handsets.Even the phone's shape, which we initially hated, has grown on us tremendously. It can stand upright anywhere, and the speakerphone is excellent.

Only complaint is the interference on around 15% of the calls -- don't know why this is happening, but this rarely happened with my 2.4 panasonic.

For the base unit, the voice mail box sounds terribly electronic. It's like they updated the handsets but used an old-style voice recorder.

Because of the voice mail and the occassional interference, only 2.5 stars...

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Features - Battery Died after 1 month
This phone has great features & sound quality, but unfortunately the supplied rechargeable batteries died after only 1 month. (they would be completely flat even though the phone had been on the charger for days). I hope it's the batteries and not the charger. I replaced the batteries and now I'm waiting to see how long they last. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Returned it
This product may be useful for some, but it wasn't for me. I have distinctive ring and caller ID on my line, and called the manufacturer before ordering to ask whether it would work in that configuration. They said yes. But in reality it only works partially - with most phones, the caller ID shows up for a second or so, and then disappears again, because the box actually picks up the phone to listen for fax tones. This is unnecessary with distinctive ring, and causes the caller to be billed even though he only hears a ringtone. I sent it back the same day I received it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money
Most new dedicated fax machines will direct a call to itself or to the phone/answering machine.EVERY answering machine will let you plug the phone into it to take a call.A waste of money for anyone who doesn't have an ancient fax machine they don't want to upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars An ingenious device!
This device works perfectly! It has many features and modes of operation but here is how I set mine up for basic use: I connect my incoming phone line to the input port, my answering maching w/phone to the TAD port, and my fax machine to the fax port. When a call comes in the Comswitch "picks up" the call on the first ring and listens momentarily for a fax tone. If there is a tone it immediately switches the call to the fax machine and then transmission begins, if it is a voice call it immediately switches to my anwering maching which then begins ringing, working as it usually does with any incoming call. For my answering machine connection, the only difference from before the Comswitch is that there is one addtional ring before the call actually starts to ring on the anwering machine. However, all of this is invisible to the caller. It also is supposed to work with voice mail systems too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great device.
I've got a Canon D680 Fax/Printer on a dedicated phone line.I wanted to utilize this underused phone number as an "info line" for my business with an out-going message on an answering machine.Even though the Canon has some setting for a tel/fax, I was unable to get the answering machine to work with the Canon by direcly connecting the two.Furthermore the Canon instructions said something about you needing to make your outgoing message very short, which I don't want to do.

Enter the ComSwitch 5500.

Plug your hot phone line into the back of the 5500, plug in your answering machine, plug in your fax machine, plug the power into the wall and presto --- it worked perfectly immediately without any tweeking!

Every call routes automatically & correctly to either my fax machine OR to my phone answering machine. The caller can't really discern any switching going on.It's very impressive, and quick.

It comes preprogrammed. If you need to make some changes to it the instructions talk about this but since I didn't need to I didn't even bother reading the instructions.

I recommend the ComSwitch 5500.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good device that fulfills a necessary function
If you don't want to pay for a separate phone line dedicated to your fax machine, this is an excellent solution. It separates out fax calls from voice calls and routes each type to the appropriate device. All you have to do is plug it into your phone line and them plug the fax machine and telephone into their separate ports in the Comswitch. This item is also nicely priced at $... and is probably tax-deductible if you're using it for business. A cimple and elegant solution. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

This innovative cordless telephone operates on the powerful 5.8 GHz frequency. Its classic design provides comfort and ease of use. Advanced features include adjustable sound settings, the ability to use up to six handsets, a speakerphones in the handset, and a duplex speakerphone in the base. (Duplex technology lets both parties talk and be heard simultaneously.)

The dual-band (5.8 GHz/2.4 GHz) design allows the base unit to transmit with more power in the 5.8 GHz frequency band or with greater efficiency at 2.4 GHz. The phone's true duplex transmission keeps the incoming and outgoing signals from interfering with each other.

The LCD on the handset provides caller ID/call waiting information (subscription required though your local phone company). The 5830 also provides talking caller ID, which announces the name or number of incoming callers.

The 5830's expandability, up to five additional handsets for a total of six, eliminates the need to hard-wire multiple extensions throughout your home. One phone jack and one power outlet is all you need to connect the 5830 base station and handset, while each additional model 5800 handset requires only a power outlet for its compact charger/cradle. Calls can be transferred from one handset to another.

The handset receiver lights up with incoming calls and can also be set to vibrate. It stores 50 names and numbers and works with your caller ID service to remember the last 50 callers. Sound Select lets you adjust bass, treble, and midrange to your liking. A spare-battery charging system enables the telephone to work even during a power outage. Choose from eight ringer melodies. The system is backed by a one-year warranty.

2-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient range
The AT&T 5.8 ghz cordless expandable phones are nice, but don't have enough range for a large house.

If range is what you need, save yourself the time and trouble and get the Panasonic. Over the past month (August 2004) I have tried the latest models of just about every major brand that offers 5.8 ghz multi-handset cordless phones - Uniden, V-Tech, AT&T (made by V-Tech), Motorola, and Panasonic. Each of these phones is nice in its own way, but only the Panasonic had enough range to receive and send clearly from one end of the house to the other. Granted my house is big (3,600 square feet, all on one level), but the other brands maxed out about 2/3rds of the way through the house. I have a WiFi network in the house, and had no interference issues from that with any of these brands. I do wish the Panasonic could expand to a total of more than just 4 handsets, but that is a minor issue. Those big honking twin antennae on the base unit seem to actually work. Please note that I tried the versions withoutanswering machines,so I can't offer any opinions on that part of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Have NEVER Been This Happy With A Cordless Phone
Before I begin my review of the BEST cordless phone I have ever used, I thought some fun facts were in order...

1876 Telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell (believe it or not, the fax machine was invented ~15 years prior to this)
1913 AT&T becomes a government sanctioned monopoly
1946 AT&T begins offering mobile telephone service (this is true!)
1958 AT&T starts selling modems (almost a decade before DARPA creates the internet and more than a quarter century before consumers have access to the WWW)
1984 AT&T is torpedoed by Judge Green's Modified Final Judgement (MFJ) -- this effectively ushers in competetition which drives innovation, and lower prices
2000 AT&T still hasn't woken up to the reality of MFJ (i.e., it's break-up) and is charging rates as high as 35 CPM for domestic calls to more than 20 million of it subscribers
2003 With the introduction of the 5800 series phones, and a new residential VoIP offer, AT&T starts to signal to main street and wall street that it is willing to wake up to the realities of today's marketplace

But you don't need to know the above to appreciate what is, in my opinion, the BEST cordless phone on the market (and I have tried many!).Here's the deal with the AT&T 5800 series...
+ Uses 5.8 Ghtz band and "Frequency Hopping Technology" to eliminate static and security issues
+ Awesome speakerphone on the base station
+ Ergonomics of the unit are unsurpassed
+ Each handset has a speakerphone built into it -- while these speakerphones are not as crisp as the one on the base station, they come in handy when interfacing with those annoying recorded menus that most companies are using today
+ All units include visibile message waiting indication (great for those with voice mail)
+ The unit just feels substantial (they have the sturdy feel of AT&T's old Western Electric produced phones that felt like they could drive rail road spikes)
+ Expansion handsets don't require RJ11 jacks to get dial-tone, they use the house wiring and they also auto-seek the base unit to simplify set-up and intercom signaling
+ For convenience, calls can be transferred from one handset to another
+ Base unit will "speak" the caller ID information -- this is especially convenient for those frequent times that you can't angle around to see the caller ID display

There are some light cons to...
+ The voice mail waiting indication light is so bright (and it blinks) that it has woken me up at nights (the only way to turn it off is to clear voice mail messages)
+ The 5800 series isn't so much a phone as it is a whole house phone system, as a result of this and the EXTREMELY high quality of the product, it is a little more expensive than the 5.8 Ghtz offerings from it's competition -- my opinion is that the extra ten or twenty bucks is well worth it

And I thought the following would be helpful as well...
1) In the past, most cordless phone providers made outrageous claims regarding the range or distance the handset could travel from the base station (AT&T makes no claims with this unit) -- wise shoppers should expect no more than 250 ft of range with the 5800 series
2) For those using the new VoIP technology to save on phone service (e.g. Vonage, Packet8, BroadVoice, Phonom, etc.), this system provides an excellent solution to the whole house wiring problems that these types of services tend to create

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a phone that sounds ok
I've read dozens of reviews and have even purchased several different models including the VTEC T2426 2.4GHZ & 5381 5.8GHZ.It is amazing how bad the sound quality was for every phone I tried, perhaps due to my wi-fi network. While this ATT model is basically the same phone as the VTech 5.8 (with the addition of talking caller id) it does not have any of the crackling that the VTech had.I think I have finally found a phone I can live with. A key factor for me is the voicemail indicator as I tend to let messages sit for days. Now I can't see how I could live without that flashing light.I can't say that I am particularly fond of ATT, but if you want to avoid the mild headaches associated with returning annoying phones, this is the one for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sound quality, but the designers could have done better
The first thing you should know is this: This is a very good phone. It feels solid, its sound quality is great, the intercom works well, and it won't interfere with your WiFi network. My bet is that if you care enough to read to the end of this review, you should just buy it-- it's what you're looking for.And if the rest of this review seems overly focused on minutia, that's a result of frustration over the Phone That Might Have Been, more than criticism of The Phone That Is.

So, it's a good phone. But come on: some of the design decisions are just plain weird.

First, there's the oddity that while there's an indicator light for your (phone-company-supplied) voicemail, there's no easy way to actually dial that voicemail number and retrieve your messages.Rather than have a one-touch button, the phone requires that you assign voicemail to one of the phone-book entries. No big deal... except that it means you're pressing a minimum of three buttons (and likely more) every time you want to get your messages.

Then there's the omission of a "this is my own area code" feature. This means that all caller-ID numbers show up as (and get dialed as) 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX numbers... which can mean long-distance charges for local calls on some systems.Yes, you can edit the number, but it requires three clicks.

Lastly, there are the set of weird behaviors that come from having the built-in base-station speakerphone not know anything about the base-station phone handset. This means, forinstance, that if you answer a call using the base-station speakerphone, you can't just then pick up the base-station handset and have the call automatically transfer.Instead, both units will be active, which means you need to hang up two separate phones.

All of these are nits, but in a system costing this much, they're silly.

So should you buy it?Yes, sure: it does most of the basics well; the quality feels high; the backup battery feature will come in handy in a power-failure (though battery is sold separately); and 5.8 Ghz is the future. But don't expect perfection... and do send "you can do better" thought waves towards the folks who designed this unit.

PS-- An equally small nit about the extension handsets: their a/c adapters don't detach from their recharging bases. That means you need an extension cord if your desk has one of those holes to thread cords through-- the adapter likely won't fit through to reach the outlet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
I probably over-researched phones, and this one came up with the best ratings/reviews.We've had it now for a few weeks, and it is the best cordless we've ever owned.Superb sound quality, features are plentiful, and the talking caller ID is pretty cool.
Haven't really tested the range beyond the confines of our house, it being winter and all.I also bought the 5800 handset for use upstairs, and it works just as well 1 & 2 floors up.
This replaced my VTech 2400 because I ended up installing a wireless LAN just after buying the phone, and was having problems with the 2.4GHz interference.Be aware that this phone does transmit from phone-to-base in the 2.4G range, but I have not had any issues with it like I did the VT 2400. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great with a Pansonic phone.
I have a Panasonic 2.4 ghz portable phone and have had excellent results.I've had a couple of headsets before, but this one is the best.I'm not sure about using it on other brand phones, sometimes they are not compatible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for CELL phones too!!
This headset fits great on the head, and has a microphone boom that goes right to the edge of the mouth for loud and clear speech pickup. The incoming audio is also loud and clear, and the speaker fits comfortably over the ear.The headset is large and sturdy -- perfect for the home, office, or car (it is too large to carry around on your person, however). It appears to work with any cell phone that has a universal 2.5mm jack.A fantastic headset for the price!

3-0 out of 5 stars finally found a cordless to use this with
I bought this headset partly based on positive feedback of others. It is a simple design which I like.It works well with my Nokia cell phone. It did not work with a Motorala cordless 5 ghz phone.Oddly enough it did not work with a Panasonic cordless phone either. Both microphone did not amplify nearly enough.I did hook it up to an Olympia 2.4 ghz cordless phone and it works great.Too bad the cordless phones aren't more standardized.

1-0 out of 5 stars May not be compatible with 5.8Ghz cordless phones
I purchased this headset based on the reviews and price. However, the headset did not work with my 5.8GHz, AT&T 5840 cordless handset. There was considerable static and I could not be heard well.I checked the product package and it stated that the headset is compatible with 900MHz and 2.4GHz analog/digital phones. There was no specific compatibility information on Amazon.com so I had no reason not to think it would work with my 5.8GHz phone. Many reviewers have said that the KX-TCA86 is not as good but for me that is not the case.I purchased this headset at Best Buy after checking the package and seeing that it was compatible with 5.8GHz phones.I can be heard perfectly (better than from the handset I am told) and I can hear perfectly. So if you have a 5.8GHz phone I would stay away from this headset and get the KX-TCA86 instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for the price
I'm shocked of the quality.I tested with several people and they had no idea that I was using a headset. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
This thing rocks! No problem with battery for me and no i can talk hands free!

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE! THE iPOD OF BLUETOOTH: NON-REPLACEABLE BATTERIES!

It was only hinted at inside the manual, but never definitvely stated, so I called JABRA and asked. Yep, I was right:

THE BATTERIES INSIDE BOTH OF THESE UNITS ARE NON-REPLACEABLE.

JABRA doesn't even have the cajones to admit this directly in their manual. They must figure if Apple can get away with this BS on the iPod, they can, too.

What does this mean to you? Somewhere between 300 - 600 recharges, YOU WILL HAVE TO THROW THE ENTIRE UNIT AWAY!!! At least with the iPod, you can pay Apple some ridiculous amount of money to replace the battery.

But wait, the idiocy doesn't stop there: The earpiece is a tapered ear-gel: IT DOESN'T STAY IN YOUR EAR unless you hold it there with your hand, which defeats the whole concept of "hands-free".

And, to top it off, the activation/de-activation sequence/ear-tones are confusing and goofy; half the time, the activation remained after I terminated a call, which quickly drained the adapter.

WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!

1-0 out of 5 stars Battery useless just over a year after purchase
I've had this product just over a year and had decent success using it w/ my Sony Erickson T610. I didn't use it much, however, and now it's practically useless, cause the battery runs out after 20-30 minutes of use (and starts beeping before that). Since I didn't use it much, I'm guessing I recharged the battery 20-30 times at most. Since you can't replace the battery, that means it's time to buy another, but it wont be a Jabra!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Fine...Could Could Be Better...
I find this bluetooth earpiece unit to work just fine. The only thing I dont like about it is the beeping & clicking sound you get every once and a while, despite this litle annoyance the thing works fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lifetime of unreplacable battery: just beyond 1 yr warranty
I got my BT200 for non-Bluetooth phones 15 months ago.It worked well and I liked it a lot despite annoying background clicking and short battery life. Now, after just over a year, its battery often won't last a day of standby let alone conversations.Jabra support says they have no spare parts or service and offered me a 20% discount on a new one.In other words, beware that this is a disposable product!I also have a BT-110, which uses a AAA cell that has much longer life and can be removed for recharge and/or replacement. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Speaker Phone I've ever had
I recently purchased this phone and I expect this will more than pay for itself in a short time.I am using this phone along with a calling card (3.5 cents per minute)to save money and the hassle of trying to call during certain times on the various calling plans. No calling plan comes close to using some of todays calling cards.
I use one of the buttons for the phone number of the calling card, another for the pass code, then another for the party you wish to talk to.This takes a couple of seconds, then you have a crystal clear connection.
When there is a need to be on hold for a while, you just push the speaker phone button to free yourself of having to hold the phone up to your ear. I opt to use the speaker phone on all calls, then I pick up the when the phone is answered.
I hope this phone lasts.I'm hoping for these to come on sale as this will save time (and money)in shopping for the holidays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad.
This is a great little phone for the most part.

1)The buttons are not tiny, so you won't be pressing the wrong numbers by mistake.

2)The digital readout is good, but after about two years it begins to fade a bit.

3)The sound quality is clear.

4)The cord is way too short though. You have to be sitting right next to the phone. But I simply replaced it with a longer cord.

5)Programing is not too complicated, but keep the manual nearby for when you have to re-program numbers. It is not simple enough to remember how to do it easily.

But it is better than most other phones I have used. I would recommend it to anyone who was looking for a new phone. ... Read more

I bought this product because I cannot be with family overseas.I bought direct from Vialta, and split my shipment, one to me (Chicago), and one to Philippines (Cebu).

We later tried sending photos.I loaded my Compact Flash card into the Beamer, and tramitted these pictures without any problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Limited Usefulness for Limited Situations
This is a product that is hardly more useful than headphones and a microphone. It is good for a narrow set of situations and purposes. It will soon be obsoleted by more useful devices. The problem is that you need to leave your computer on for the device to work. However, for most, a telephone is a device and service that shouldn't be dependent upon a computer's whims.

This type of product can be useful for Skype users who leave their computer on all the time, never have hangs, and don't reboot. If so, a bluetooth headset may be a better choice. Othewise, what you really want is a Skype ethernet gateway device that doesn't requre a computer. Unfortunately, these devices are not presently available but are rumored to become available later this year. Many people are better off waiting. See SkypeJournal.com for more info.

A better alternative, for Skype category users, is to purchase SIP VoIP devices such as the category leading Sipura products. SIP devices have existed for years and make use of the open SIP standard. These devices, when used with a SIP service provider such as VoicePulse, BroadVoice and others, provide many more features than Skype, but are not necessarily more expensive. See voxilla.com or voip-info.org for more info.

I'm a Skype I/O user who went the always-on-USB-device route and now have regrets. I should have waited. However, I'm very happy with my Sipura SPA-3000 device and VoicePulse provider, at least for now. If I want to use Skype with my notebook, I use a Windows XP compatible bluetooth headset. If I want additional portability and mobility, I use a wired headset with a wireless PocketPC. I've never gotten a bluetooth headset working with Skype on a PocketPC. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Add color, motion video to any phone call between yourself and another party using Vialta's Beamer. There are no hookup hassles, service fees, or extra per-call expenses. The Beamer is compatible with any home phone over a standard analog phone line. It requires no additional equipment or wiring, although to use the video features, the other party you're calling will also need a Beamer phone (sold separately).

Setup takes only a few minutes. Just plug your phone line into the Beamer and then connect the Beamer to your phone. When you call another Beamer owner and press Start, video is transmitted to the other party at up to 15 frames per second. For your party's privacy, the unit displays only a message on your screen until the other party also presses the Start button and transmits video back to you.

In addition to video, you can use the snapshot feature to send a high-resolution still image of yourself to the other party. The snapshot feature doubles as a privacy mode, temporarily preventing video transmission for as long as you want. Enjoy three viewing options: self, to view just yourself (how you will appear to the other party); other party, to view your called party; and combo, to display both you and the other party at the same time. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars BAD!!!!!!!!!!!
This video phone is the biggest garbage in the world. I bought one it is a waste of money. Video quality is horrible and cheap!! U will not be happy with this. I also have a motorola OJO video phone. That is much better than this. If your gonna get a video phone get the OJO. The price is higher but the video quality is superb!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great for technically challenged relatives
We bought 2 Beamers to use with my elderly in-laws.They were able to work it, the image is okay, and they enjoy seeing our kids.We also have webcams for our computer enabled family, and they work much better and there is no phone charges, but this would not work with my in-laws.The videophone is obviously a little choppy, but if you make sure to have a well lit room it shows a nice picture. My 2 year old son goes up to it and says "Pop-Pop, Pop-Pop" when he wants to see his grandfather.Even though they live 3000 miles away, it feels like you are much closer

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi Mom!
Appearance: Lightly tinted bluish beveled glass surrounding the palm-sized LCD and camera aperture. The rest of the unit is that type of matte finish hard plastic used in laptops. It resembles a picture frame or a small LCD monitor (which it is, in part).Three simple controls on the side of the unit, and three ports in the rear -- two for phone jacks and one for the power supply. With this unit, you supply your own phone, which may be more convenient in some cases and saves on space.
Function: You call into the other location and ask them to activate their video station, and the unit on your side activates automatically. There is a 20 second delay for the video to rev up, then both sides can see each other. The unit tilts about 30 degrees on the base.
Quality: Not bad, meaning, it's fair, but comparable to the standard line speed of 33K.The screen is big enough and bright enough for my parents to be able to view with their not so good eyesight. The unit doesn't respond well to movement like all videophones, but if the image shown is relatively constant, voice and video transmission is good and synchronized. The unit has a simple switch to decrease the resolution which prevents rebuffering delay. The unit also has a picture in picture feature so you can see what you look like.Activating this feature does not seem to slow transmission.
Ease of Use: So easy, my parents could hook it up with phone tech support. (Me.)Very easy to activate and non-threatening interface.Hook up time is about 2 minutes; installation instructions are good.Connection time for calls is really no more than 25 seconds. The unit provides good, clear responses to inform about delays in transmission or problems with connection.
Problems: The unit generates some slight heat when plugged into the adapter.I pull the power adapter out of the unit to rid this problem. It doesn't work with all phone lines, like PBX.It works with my run of the mill ten year old phone.
Overall: This is a solid, well-designed and engineered unit. It's been made to be usable, unlike some amalgams of technology I've seen.I remember the videophones of five years ago with prices in the fifteen-hundred dollar range with quality that wasn't half as good as what this unit. This unit is affordable enough to buy a few of them to distribute to the family. This unit is good for grandkids to see grandparents and closes the physical distance in an amazing way, because its like looking at grandma through a really small window in the house.I had serious doubts about this technology actually working, having not seen this unit prior to buying it, but it works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Low Cost Solution
Easy to hook up.Very stylish.See family without having to fly. Thanks Vialta! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars PC Only!!!
Based on the reviews above, I purchased this to shuttle files between my Motorola V710 and Mac running OS 10.3.7.Despite many attempts to clean up/re-format the disk, and removing .DS_STORE files before returning the disk to my phone, I have yet to get it to work between the Mac and my phone. As soon as I put a file on the disk from my Mac, even in the appropriate folder followed by removing .DS_STORE files, the disk stops working, and blocks access to other files stored on the phone. The best I can do is format it on the phone, and use it for extra storage. So, if you want something to pass files between your Mac and phone, keep looking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have accessory for your mobile phone!
I am very pleased with this memory card. I was able to transfer movies, MP3's and pictures to my Motorola v710 effortlessly. You simply drag whatever you want on the phone onto the disk on your computer! With normal quality, you can store around 40 songs on your phone. Just make sure you have a memory card adapter that can read SD memory cards.

NOTE FOR MAC USERS: If you are using a computer with Mac OS X to transfer files be warned, the computer will create an invisible file in the memory card named ".DS_STORE" that, if not erased, will crash your phone. No permanent damage will be done, but you will be unable to access anything you put on your card. To delete the file, find a program that can see invisible files.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!
I bought the SanDisk 128MB TransFlash because the storage space on my cool, new Motorola V710 from Verizon is sorta skimpy (...just 10MB).Now I have no problems storing all my photos, video clips, and MP3s.The TransFlash is really, really tiny.According to SanDisk, it's not meant to be handled regularly because the fairly soft casing is prone to damage if handled roughly.Remember to format the TransFlash first before using.Have fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Expanded storage for the Motorola V710
Recently I picked up the Motorola V710 (verizon) phone that is compatable with this memory card. The Transflash card used to be called T-Flash and was for some reason renamed. In the package an included transflash to SD memory adapter allows you to connect to a SD compatable memory reader for a PC through a USB 2.0 interface.

The first thing that struck me as amazing is the size of the transflash memory.120mb in a little device that I can barely keep hold of in two fingers. It tucks away neatly into the transflash memory port on the Motorola V710 unnoticed. This is one of the first phones to feature a built in 1.2 megapixel camera, mp3 player and video camera, so the need for expanded storage is a must.

I purchased a cheap SD memory reader and plugged the transflash card to the SD adapter and it immediately read as a removable storage drive on my Windows XP based computer. One problem I did have was files kept getting corrupted when I tried to read them on the phone.I fixed this by formatting the card (just like formatting a built in hard drive). Not sure if this was a problem of how the phone formatted the memory when it built all the default directories or if it was the reader or card itself. But the format fixed it with no further issues.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good conference phone, but ...
I got this conference phone at a good price. It is quite expensive for home use.

Pro:
* It can be loud.
* When someone in the house pick up the phone, it makes a short beep. Great for monitoring.
* Cord is long.Great when you want to extend to other table.
* Got a RCA jack if you want to record it.

Con:
* It does sound like you are inside a big tunnel.Isnt all speakphone like this?Who can tell the difference if both are using it.
* Too expensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for office conferences.
I use it for my SOHO and it works great. I do not understand who other users have posted negative comments on this product. It works great, the sound quality is pretty good for the price. Soundstation with mics is better, but also three times as expensive.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
I purchased this phone thinking it was similar to the SoundStation 100, the difference being this one is newer, sleeker, and cheaper... I was wrong.

The sound quality is terrible.I could not hear a person speaking from a handset without clipping. When I spoke, others said it sounded like I was in a tunnel, or very far from the mic. This was in a room about 10x12.They said it is for small rooms...Like a closet perhaps?

I am going to step up to the SoundStation 100...Which has much better reviews.I'll review it there...

2-0 out of 5 stars Step up to SoundStation
I bought this phone hoping it would be similar in quality to the polycom soundstation phones we use at work. It was not.

When I use the phone, I often cannot hear the first half sentence of the other party when they begin speaking. They complain that I sound like I am in a huge room, and can't hear me if I get more than a foot from the unit.

I am most disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Conference Phone!
I would reccommend this phone to most people, especially those who work at an office. It is great for big meetings in a big room. The features are easy and fun! ... Read more
