The best cordless phone that I have used
Pros:
- sounds nice and clear for both handset and speaker phone.
- speaker phone on both base and handset.effectively makes it two phones, which means if you suddenly find your handset out of juice, you can still use the speaker phone on the base, instead of having to get up and run to the corded phone in the other room.
- NiMH batteries are better than NiCad in general.
- small and feels sturdy.compare to the panasonic kx-tg2227 I had both the base and handset are smaller.

Cons:
- 8 uninspiring, ring tones.and except for a couple, too high-pitched.
- there are 3 voice mailboxes, and there is no way to disable just one or two.

Phone broke 2 weeks after the warranty ended
So, I liked this phone just fine while it worked.

But it broke 2 weeks after the end of the 1 year warranty. Now the handset can't find the base, and it beeps approximately 5 times/minute while looking for its electronic mate (which it finds about 1/2 the time). When it can find the base, one can speak on the phone.

Obviously I have only 1 data point to offer, and so can't make meaningful generalizations about product durability. But our Panasonic cordless system (bought june 2002) still works fine. And for an original $110 cost, I did think the Motorola would work for longer than 54 weeks w/out breaking. (Works out to $2/week in cost).

Worked for 366 days after purchase, then broke
I was very pleased with this phone ... as long as it worked. It stopped working just after 1 year from the date of purchase (really 11 months from the date of receipt, given Amazon.com left it on back order for 1 month. Which I learned now counts against my warranty time. Who knew?) For $105 I would have liked it work work beyond a few days past the warranty. But that is just me.

Crystal Clear Quality of Motorola 5.8GHz Cordless Phone
Motorola 5.8GHz Cordless Speakerphone w/Answering System/Caller Id is a great buy for many a reason.
a)Crystal Clear Quality -- I am speechless by the clarity of voice...have not experienced this kind of quality before.
b) Speaker-phone on the handset and on the Base equipment is a cool feature.
c) Three mail-boxes -- Wow...I've one for me, one for my wife and one for my children.
d)Voice-mail beeper -- this draws your attention to a new voice-mail...beeps softly without annoying you until you listen to your voice-mail.
e) Great Price -- of course, via AMAZING Amazon.com.
g) Handset expandability -- can expand upto 6 handsets (thoughI find this redundant for me)but quiteconvenient for a large family or a small business.

Definitely, you'd not 'hang up' on it since it's quite 'engaging' and winsome besides its crystal-clear quality.

Quality phone, short on ergonomics
This phone, and the expansion kit are high-quality. I'm not one for whiz-bang bells & whistles. It performs clearly and flawlessly as a cordless phone. I think that is the most important part and is where this phone shines. You're paying for that quality, and it's worth it.

The only strike against it is ergonomics. Small buttons on the base make it difficult to dial from the base. The buttons on the phone are sized appropriately for the size of the phone, and are larger than the ones on the base.

The phone is flat and relatively narrow. It's easy to hold, especially with the ribbed-rubber sides. However, it does not do well if you try to "sandwich" it between your head/ear and shoulder. It supports a mic/speaker headset (on the portable) with the same type you use for your cell phone.

The speaker phone is adequate on the phone and base, but I rarely use it.

solid structure and good voice quality
I have bought 3 of these phones so far and I would recommend it to anyone.This is a better choice to the MD681 which I own 1 of.681 has a flaky answering machine is not integrated with the rest of the device.It is in my opinion not worth the money.Also you can use multiple handsets from different base stations and make thehandsets all look at the same base - this can be cheaper than buying individual expansion sets!

I believe this rebate deal is an outright scam
I purchased this phone several months ago, and subsequently recommended it to a friend, based on the low price after rebate. I submitted my rebate according to all directions - I'm a VERY meticulous person where rebates are conerned. I also handled the rebate for my friend, to save her time.

Having recently visited a rebate tracking service website, I was shocked to find that both rebates were rejected. According to their information, the offer I submitted was not valid for the phone I purchased. Well, guess what: the rebate -was- valid, and -did- apply to exactly the right item, model number, UPC code, and so forth. I -always- check these things before sending in a rebate. In fact, I check these things twice because I want to avoid precisely this kind of problem. Naturally, since I mailed in the original UPC code for both phones, it's virutally impossible for me to "prove" my case. I'm left with little recourse but to warn other potential buyers.

The phone itself is of adquate quality, though the speakerphone function leaves much to be desired. Overall the phone would be a reasonably good deal IF the rebate offer were actually honored. As it stands, I feel I've been cheated by Motorola (or whomever handles their rebates), and will never purchase another Motorola product. Buyer BEWARE!

Fine, but transmits on 2.4 GHz also (interferes w/ wireless)
The phone works fine.

But it transmits on 2.4 GHz frequency for incoming calls (which is not disclosed on the materials included w/ the phone), and which can interfere w/ wireless networks. As a 50+% 2.4 GHz phone, it isn't a great deal, either.

I think Motorola should really provide better documentation for this, so buyers can make informed decisons (other than returning the product). ... Read more

Great Sound Quality
We purchased a competing phone, but took it back because I was not pleased with the sound quality.This phone is as clear as a bell.

It would be nice if the menu was a little easier.It would be nice if the main base unit was a speaker phone too.It would have been nice too if all of the buttons on the phone lit up.Only the number pad glows.So basically, you can dial the number in the dark, but unless you are not familiar with the phone, you will not be able to do anything else :)These are not enough to lower the ratings though.

Otherwise, the phone has it all plus quality.

Excellent Phone
I spent quite a large amount of time researching cordless phones before deciding to purchase this unit.There have been many complaints about Panasonic's slightly older lines of 2.4 and 5.8 GHz phones.However, this phone appears to be of an entirely different desgin as evidenced by the slimmer handset form factor.I have had this phone for a few weeks and have not run into any performance issues.

While the phone suffers from a few minor flaws such as having to pay to download ring tones on each handset and having handsets register missed calls when another handset is used to answer the phone, these types of issues are pretty much omnipresent in the current generation of multihandest/expandable handset phone systems.

This product is not perfect but seems much more reliable and than many of the other top of the line phone systems out there.I highly reccomend this product!

Love this phone!
This is the third time I have bought a phone system with one base and multiple handsets, and this is the best one I have used so far.The reasons range from trivial (I like the sounds of the ring tones), to significant (you can use multiple handsets at once).

The two most important features for me before purchase were:

1) 5.8 Ghz spread spectrum.My old phone was a 2.4 Ghz, and it would occasionally interfere with my wireless computer network.It was very annoying.My moving to a phone that uses a different frequency range, the problem is completely avoided.

2) The ability to use multiple handsets at the same time.Another phone I previously had would not let two handsets talk in the same conversation at the same time.This was just miserable.This phone lets you do this without any problems.

After purchase, I found that it had some other amazing features:

1) Each phone has a unique ID, and you can conference between the handsets.With the range this phone has, my wife and I now carry them around outside (we have a 3 acre yard) and use them to talk to each other.

2) The phone has an AMAZING speakerphone capability on each handset!This was not on my radar at all, but it is really useful.

3) When playing back messages it has recorded, it shows you the caller ID entry for the message.Really nice touch.

4) While I don't know much about it yet, I can apparently keep the numbers in the phone's phonebook in sync with those stored in Outlook in my computer.I can also download new ringtones, but that's not so importent to me.More info on this is available at www.openlcr.com.

The ONLY annoying thing about this phone is that when you answer a call on one handset, the other two handsets register it as a 'missed call' in the caller ID list.I considered rating it 4 stars for this, but once you get used to it, the rest of the features more than make up for it.

Almost perfect
This phone has all the features anyone could possibly need. It's also relatively easy to figure out, since the interace is similar to your average cell phone's menu-style interface. One thing I was surprised by though, is if you pay to download a ringtone, you only get it on ONE of the handsets! You have to pay 3 times to put the same ring tone on all the handsets. I got burned by this, and it's why I'm giving it 4 stars.

Nice 2nd Gen phone system
I junked my Motorola MD681 for this phone.I was skeptical about jumping into another wireless phone system, but I needed phones in some areas where there are typically no jacks (garage, attic).After doing some research, I decided to go with Panasonics' new phone system.Unlike Motorola, I see all types of older 2.4Ghz expandable Panasonic phones still available for purchase from the popular retailers. So, this new phone should be supported for some time.Anyway, into the details.

The Good
1. Handset : this phone feels good in the hand and on the ear.Though not overly heavy, it has a nice weight and doesn't creak or flex through normal use unlike some other less expensive handsets.Most of the color on the handset is protected by a clear acrylic, so it will retain its color for years.The LCD screen is very large, much larger than I am used to.It does show a great deal of information legibly.It has an orange backlight that illuminates the screen as well as all of the buttons.Most of the navigation is done with a 4-way joystick and 2 soft buttons which makes most things fairly intuitive.

2. The Base : It is small considering how many buttons and functions it performs.It is however missing a large display for showing callerID information.However, most of the time I will look to the phone to provide this info, and it leaves only one CID list to maintain.On my old system, the base would always show 50 new calls because I never went through the CID list on the base, so this is a plus for me.

3. Sound : Okay, this is a highly subjective area, but I like the sound of the Panasonic.The speakerphone, on the handset, is probably one of the best I have used.The mic is sensitive enough that we don't have to yell to be heard, and the speaker provides consistent volume and good clarity.There is a voice enhancement filter that you can turn on or off, or have the phone decide when to use it.I have it set to automatic, and I can't tell if it is on without looking at the display.It is never on for domestic calls, but for those overseas calls it activates and the calls sound like domestic calls with a wee bit of static.I have not done an A/B comparison to see how a long distance call sounds with it on and off, so this could be a gimmick.There are the standard beepy, computerized ringtones included, but you can record your own ringtones into the phone from any source you want.I haven't played with this yet, but the demos that are included with the phone sound as good as could be expected from a telephone.I guess I would put them above cell phone quality audio of the same type.

4. Convenience : The thing that I love about this phone is that you can check/delete/save your answering machine messages from any handset. If there is CID info, you can return the call immediately by pressing talk and the phone will dial the number.The other thing I love about this phone is the shared phonebook.No more looking for the phone with so-and-so's number on it, or having to program 4 phones with the same number, they will all have the same phonebook.This phone also has a distictive ring capacity.You can program anyone in your phonebook to flash the LED in one of three colors (blue/green/orange) as well as play a certain ring tone, including the user recorded types.Plus the standard intercom, call transfers, 3-way calling that is pretty much standard with these types of phones.

5. Extras : This system comes with a feature called CallerIQ.You have to signup with a 3rd party company openLCR.For $10 every 4 months, they will allow you to call them and download weather, stocks, sports scores, horoscopes and lottery results. Ringtones aren't included and cost extra and are of the downloaded cell phone ringtone sytle.You can also have your phonebook uploaded for safe keeping and reference while away from home.Not sure if this is a plus or minus, but getting the 1 to 3 days of weather on your phone is a nice little thing.I have not tried this myself.

6. Range : This phone covers my whole house with no static or dropouts.I have not attempted to walk down the street with it because I probably never will, but a walk to the mailbox proved its range to be adequate, especially with the base at the other end of the house.I have also not noticed any intereference with my wireless network, but truth be told you shouldn't with any 5.8ghz phone.

The Not So Good
1. The Phone : The buttons are small.Not very small, but noticeably smaller than normal.The Talk/Off/Speakerphone buttons and the Soft Buttons are tiny, and may be hard to hit for those people with big/wide fingers.

2. The Base : I would not suggest mounting this on your wall.The bracket supplied essentially holds the base horizontally as if it were laying on a table, so it just juts out into the room instead for hanging more or less flush.Needless to say, my base is resting upon a table now.The base also was not intended to be the primary source of input.The LCD panel is small, and only displays the number of calls on the answering machine.A small green light on the base will let you know if the line is being used.I wish there was more info displayed on the base, but the phone is your primary device for accessing the system, so I guess they're keeping it simple.

3. Sound : Other than the questionable effectiveness of the voice enhancer, I don't have much to complain about here.

4. Convenience : How hard is it to name the various phones?I don't want to have to tell people phone 2 is in the basement, or phone 3 is the guest room.Why can't we label phones or just pick from a list of common rooms when we associate a phone to the base?I deduct .5 stars for this because everything else is there, why not this?It seems like a total no brainer.

5. Extras : I'm not sure about the 3rd party site for CallerIQ.They mention on the site that it is a long distance call, but they don't say to where.So, you figure 30-90 seconds a day to download the information.That's quite a bit of long distance calling that you have to pay for on top of the service charge.No too sure about this one.

So, this turned out to be much longer than I had ever intended it to be.So, I'll attempt to summarize for those who don't want to slog through my rambling.

The Panasonic TG5571M is a solid phone with a good feature set and some very nice convenience features added in.It allows you to check the answering machine from any phone in the system, it also has one unified phonebook that is shared between all phones, and it has great sound and sufficient range.However, it is missing the capability to name the various satellite phones, the buttons on the phone are slightly smaller than normal and the wall mount projects the phone into the room.I'm giving it 5 stars, because I can't give 4.5. ... Tried them all...this is the only one I kept
I have tried all the 5.8mhz 2 line phones. None really cut it in the quality/distance specs. This is a great performer for the price and I paid much more than what it is selling for now.

Pros:Read the other reviews and save me the time...they are all good and I put 8 hours a day on mine and after 9 months it is still going strong.Things I like are good display, best distance of the 3 phones I tried, easy to use without a long read of the manual, and great drop performance.I have dropped this phone many times from counter height to my hardwood or concrete floors with no ill affects.The belt clip is a great design and will not come off. The phone contacts are the best design I have seen as they always make a connection even if the phone is tilted.Having individual phone books is nice except if you syc them with the base you loose your individuality.Not one performance problem.I did order a 3rd handset a few weeks ago and the display was different (a later "imnproved" model)but I noticed a hum/hiss that was not on the other original hansets and did not exist on them when in the same location.I have returned this for exchange.

Cons: Like all 5.8mhz sets this one has limited range but a good 100 through walls.50 feet if you included an aluminum sided wall. Volume could be higher...what is it with all these phone people...they just can put enough volume in anything whether it be cell phone or wireless handset. Headset also left something to be desired.In ability to add just one contact to the general phone directory, in ability to use speaker phone on intercom mode.I just wish there was someway to push a little more distance out....

Good phone - shame about the speakerphone.
Got this phone to work from home, along with 4 of my colleagues. The phone offers a very comprehensive set of features. We were also told it would work ok with a wireless network.

The phone is difficult to use from the base station. The numbers are so close together it's easy to punch the wrong button. I guess that's the price you pay for having a small footprint, which the phone certainly has.

The biggest problem we are finding is with the base unit. The speakerphone on the base cuts out, meaning large parts of conversations are missed. If it was just my phone I would have tried swapping it, but it's three different phones being used in three different houses.

Uniden support suggested this was probably due to phone placement. They say the phone should be at least 5-6 feet away from electrical appliances. We're using the phones for work, which means within a few feet of a laptop computer. This seems to be the only common cause of the problem - unless the phones just have a flaw, but nobody else seems to have reported problems with the base unit speakerphone.

It seems very odd that the problem is only with the base unit. I would have thought electrical interference (from a laptop) should affect the handset more, since it's wireless, rather than the wired base unit. That doesn't seem to be the case.

One of my colleagues also reported 'garbled messages' when using voicemail. Interesting to see other comments here about voicemail not working.

The phone probably offers the best set of features compared to other similar phones. Unfortunately the speaker phone problem is proving to be such a pain we're contemplating our options for returning the phones - hence only a 2 star rating.

Very Nice - apart from the echo on line 2
I have the same echo-like sound when using the phone on line 2 as a previous reviewer described.I had read that review prior to purchasing the phone but didn't believe it.I wish I had.That said, only 1 of my 2 handsets has a bad enough echo that I don't like talking on it.Both handsets work great for line 1 - really clear sound and no echo.As with the other reviewer I swapped lines, phones, and various other combos but got consistent results.Uniden tech support had me do a "reset" of the phones and base unit - to no avail.They said a repair is the next step.

It's too bad, the phone has great features, feels nice, and all that.I'm not sure if I'll purchase the Panasonic (I've had bad luck with several of their phones) or try to keep swapping additional handsets hoping to get ones that don't echo.I don't use line 2 a lot so can get by for awhile.

The only other feature I didn't like was that the caller-id info is saved on each phone.If I want to delete a caller-id log record, I have to go to the base, its handset, and my extra handset and deleted from each one.Otherwise it shows "New CID" on the handsets as if there is a call needing attention.Something I'll just have to ignore because it's a nuisance going to each phone to delete them.

Great phone system
We have six of these handsets in our home, for over six months, and they work great! The sound quality, range, and battery life are superior to every other cordless phone I have ever used. The feature set is very well thought out, and the phones are extremely easy to use.

The Best Phone We Have Ever Owned
We bought this phone about a year ago and have had no issues yet.The battery life is still the same as when we first bought the phone.The speakerphone is the best speakerphone that we have ever used. Better than Panasonic, AT&T, Uniden,V-Tech, Seimons, or any other brand. Most of the time the people on the other end don't even know you are on speakerphone.If you want a clear connection phone where you can hear the caller and the caller can hear you this is the phone to buy.If you want a lot of different features and have static on the phone then buy another phone.

Lots of features, a cool look, a great phone!
This phone has many more features than most other cordless phones on the market, such as vibrate and speakerphone on the handset.It has a very modern cool blue and silver look, and the keypad lights up blue when touched.Both the handset and base seem to be very sturdy, and I expect they will last me a long time.Most importantly, the calls are very clear and the range is pretty decent (it goes everywhere in my house, not sure how much further).Battery life doesn't seem to last as long as advertised, but still at least a few days on standby which is good enough for me.Overall this is the greatest cordless phone I have ever used.

Anice phone with a big "BUT"
I like this system and it has worked well for me. BUT, with a newer system now released by Motorola, you should be aware that the two are NOT compatible. So if you have to replace a single phone in your system ... Good Luck. You'll have to throw the whole system away and start over with a new system.

Excellent range. Easy setup. Clear voice transmission. Like the speaker functionality. No interference with my wireless connection. Could be happier if I could use this as a monitor (I think Unidel allows this). I am not a big fan of Moto cell phones (had 2 lousy ones) but, this household handset is very good.

I think this is a great phone
I have had this phone with an extra handset for about 2 months now and I could not be happier.

I'm using this phone with my Vonage service and the call clarity is excellent.I can't speak too much for range since I live in a Townhouse, but the extra handset works fine on a different level of the house.

I've been particularly happy with the speakerphone capability on the handsets.It sounds great and people can actually hear you when you are using it.

The only thing that might bother people is that the buttons are softer than I'm used to on phones.I found myself thinking I hadpushed the button several times when it was new, when in fact I had not.I have gotten used to this and it does not bother me anymore, but I wanted to mention in case this kind of thing bothers you. ... Below Par: Makes Background Noise
Every feature said to be available exists, but, over several months, the quality has dropped to worthlessness.

Cons
The secondary handset recharger stopped recharging.

Both handsets crackle and fade. Others hear me fine, but I am unable to hear them. New batteries did not help.

The phonebook is rudimentary. The Nokia cell phone I received free has a better phonebook. Each name only gets one number.

The handset is heavy. For the price, some of the weight should be engineered out.

Pros
When things were working, the volume was easy to change.

Standard rechargeable batteries.

Unsure: I never used the answering machine feature. I have voice mail, and did not find it necessary. My opinion of the phone does not include this unused feature.

Overall, I am disappointed. Hopefully, their customer service people will provide a solution.

I realize many people have found the VTech 5850 a fine phone, but I do not. Maybe I bought a lemon. VTech's reputation is strong, and better luck might be found with this popular phone. I am bound in this review to provide my experience, and that experience was that of a sub-par cordless telephone.

This is the best phone i've ever used.It is so clear that my friends could hear the clock on the wall ticking!Easy to follow directions, great features and the answering machine is wonderful.I highly recommend this phone.And, the second phone doesn't require a phone jack.How sweet is that???!!!

Watch out
This is a wonderful phone system and I was going to give it
five stars until one of the most important features I got it
for, broke.

I've had Vtech phones for a long time and found them superior. This time, they've changed the belt clip to not only have very sharp tines that dig into and tear clothing, but after only four months of use, the vicious clip has snapped and according to the 'customer service' line, can't be replaced as they are available only with the system at purchase. After a strong complaint to customer service, they offered to send me one when they might get one in their stock. These clips are apparently unavailable in the stores, although during my first questions to the service rep, I was told to go to the store to buy another. The belt clips of the older Vtech were a well designed, didn't tear clothing and were very sturdy, after years of use, still intact. This new one, after only four months is useless. If this feature is important to you, you might want to look elsewhere.

Disappointed
This phone has some good options, just not ones that I use. For instance, it does not have a speed dial option. It has what's called a phone book. You have to scroll through a menu to pick what number you want to dial. I use my speed dial to put in my calling card 800 number and then another speed dial to put in the pin. Now I have to scroll through to get the pin number in time to enter it when it's asked for. What a pain.

I put this phone where my old cordless was and there's nothing but static and this tin can sound. I have changed the location of this phone to 7 different spots, no luck. It still sounds terrible.

It is very uncomfortable to hold up to your ear. The ringer choices are so obnoxious that I have the ringer off and use the old phone just so something rings when a call is coming in.

I don't have caller ID in my area so I cannot comment on how well that works.

The answering machine is nice but you have to be very careful as to when you hit the delete button to delete a message. If you hit it at the end of a message it will delete the NEXT message not the one you were just listening to.

For the money this phone is a real disappointment. It's such a hassle to return it that I guess I'm stuck with it until some friend needs a phone and I'll give it to them or put it in a rummage sale. ... Read more

People have trouble hearing us
I've had the Panasonic 5.8 GHz wireless phone for about six months, with 4 handsets (max total). Overall I like the system, but have a few complaints.First, I had the Siemens wireless system and had 6 handsets (could have 8 total) so buying this system reduced having a phone in the garage, and living room, not a big deal though, as if I'm working in the garage I just take a handset in there. My second and main complaint is I don't understand the voice enhancer (VE).The manual says something about making your voice clearer etc. but when I turn the VE on, I get comments like "I'm having trouble hearing you." When I turn it off, people say "That's a little better." It seems that we get complaints about people having trouble hearing us unless we use the speaker option, or use a headset.The final thing I don't care for are the "missed calls" on the handsets that didn't answer the incoming call.I'm constantly clearing that message from handsets, sometimes a handset that is rarely used will say "34 missed calls."I see no reason for this feature, unless the call was actually not answered by any handset.

The things I like about the phone system are the lighted antennas when ringing, the backlight, the speaker phone on each handset, good battery life and intercom system.However, I don't like the fact that you can only page from the main station, not from the handsets.

Overall, it is a good phone system, would be an excellent system if my issues above could be resolved.

Almost excellent...
I have been using the phone for over 2 months now. All the issues others mentioned seem to have been resolved in 2005 models, except Caller ID. It works only 5-10% of the time; an "Incoming call" is all that you get for the rest. I find this quite ridiculous since my $15 phone can display it almost always. I would expect Panasonic to get such an easy thing right on a $200+ phone.

the best of the rest
This is my second Panasonic 2 line phone. The other one started interferring with my wireless networking at home. I researched some of the others (Uniden, At&T) and went with this one.
No more interferance with my 2.4 gig wireless. It also has all the features that was missing from the first one and then some.

I couldn't be happier. Nice ring tones, ability to turn off each lines ringer seperately. Call back editing (which is helpful for local calls where you need to delete the 1). The ring alert feature is great with the flashing light.

I've had it about 3 months now and couldn't be happier. Great price also.

The Best 2-Line Cordless Phone Available
I have used 2-line cordless phones for years. This model is definitely the best 2-line cordless available in a small universe of 2-line cordless phones. No other model comes close. The positives are mentioned in other reviews. ie; clarity, ease of use, substantial quality, voice-enhancement feature, excellent redial (includes # 1 in the area code number you redial).)My previous V-techs did not ..
MINUS: (lose 1 star)
The DUMBEST design flaw of 2004 - When you answer on one handset, your other handsets register "missed call" ! Stupid, beyond belief -- Congrats to Panasonic engineering/design teams.
The caller ID is slow - Registers the incoming call on the second ring.
AS for Panasonic consumer products HELP that another reviewer mentioned; Correct ! Panasonic has always been, and still is egregious when it comes to this department. And, Panasonic "ain't" going to ever improve on this..Why ? Cause they don't care ! If you buy Panasonic anything - You go it alone !! (everyone should know this by now)....
This phone is excellent - You won't find a better model. Despite the few unmerited negative reviews. Some folks just have to complain !

Clarity and Sharpness can be had...
My last two-line phone was Panasonic. It was ok, perhaps 2.5 stars. After a couple of years, number pad got flaky, noise increased steadily, and worst, the battery really stopped holding charges for more than 5 minutes.

So I get another Panasonic, go figure... But the tech stuff looked good, two phones in one package. It was hard to say no.

Right out of the box, it worked flawlessly. So what are the high points: much easier to adjust dates (which is necessary after power interruptions), put in and edit messages, recall caller ids, etc. It's amazingly better than my last one. Furthermore, you can collect voicemail from either remote handset, and caller ids. You need to erase them from each as well. The whole user interface has been greatly simplified. Lots of little things that are convenient, e.g. when ringing, the antenna flashes. That's great in a dark room or where you can't quite locate the phone by sound -- you can see it flash.

I'm very happy. Will it hold up rough treatment by the teenagers in my family? Only time will tell, but the "feel" of the phones is much better than the older one. It also carries alot further from the base station than the previous one.

Check it out. SO why 4 stars, maybe a reluctance to over-recommend, but I think it's worth the money. ... Read more

Best phone set I've ever owned.
Love these things.I have 5 handsets so far, and I'm thinking I need two more.

I set the banner on each handset to things like "Kitchen", "LivingRoom", "MasterBed", "Garage1", etc.Once you do that, you just hit the "intercom" button and the list of handsets pops up with the banner names, and you select the appropriate destination by name.Love that.Every handset can be a room monitor by a similiar function.

Every handset has a speakerphone function too:)Joy.Easy to use, easy setup.great functionality.

a Great Acessory to the TRU 8885 Phone
This hand set was easy to program and is exactly the same as the ones that come with the phone. I have the TRU 8885 but this hand set works with a number of Uniden models.
Some many great features; long battery life, battery life indicator, speaker phone (my favorite), answering machine access, easy to read in any light, lighted keys, and more.
A great addition, and well worth the money.

Uniden Pulls Off Another Cordless Phone Coup
The Uniden TCX-800 is lightweight but the features are full blown.The handset speakerphone is as good as any I've tested.Plus the Caller ID and phonebook services are really functional and make things easy on the average user.I really like the orange backlit screen on the phone too - it makes reading the numbers and information so much easier than the competitor's products.To top things off, the sound clarity is outstanding on the handset.I feel that the connections I get with my cordless are better than what I was getting with my corded phones!Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this product - it was well worth the money spent and capability-wise, it offered more features that its competitors' products.

You can "name" each phone!
Just in response to a previous poster - you indeed can "name" each handset.Under "menu," go to "handset setup," and then "banner."I've named mine by room (i.e. "Office").After naming each handset, once you press "intercom," it will give you the banner name you've chosen as well as the handset number as an option for calling other extentions.

Uniden did think of everything.I've replaced my fairly new Panasonic 5.8 GHZ mulitple handset system with this one and it no longer sounds to my friends and family as if I am making calls from a busy train station. Crystal clear.Also am thrilled with the possibility of having up to 10 handsets!

Easiest setup ever on a well designed cool phone
Uniden engineers/designers need to be congratulated on making the set up so easy. Just pop in the battery, charge and place in the base station for a few minutes.

The phone itself is full of features and looks cool. One of the few phones without a visible aerial. (GE also has one but looks & feels cheap & plasticky).

If the designers are reading this then I have one recommendation for improvement - if you could make the software such that we could nickname the phones individually it would make it easy to transfer incoming calls around the house without remembering that Handset 4 is located in the study. ... Not without problems
Most cordless phones theses days are a dissappointment. The Uniden TRU8866 and TCX860 are an improvement in usability, but still have some serious shortcomings.
1. Their microphone reception are very faint (to point of inaudability) on Hello direct and Plantronics headsets that work fine on other phones. Uniden's answer is "buy a Uniden headset." Right. Box doesn't say Only works with Uniden Headset.
2. Their touch tones don't work on many voice response systems I've encountered. My other phones do.
3. While handset voice quality is good, range is less than any other cordless phone I have. Barely the length of my small house.

I won't buy anymore handsets for this system and can't recommend it for the above reasons. I give two stars because they do have some novel features and if they fixed the above would be great.

A Wonderful Addition to the TRU8866 System!Very Satisfied.
This is NO April Fools review!I had an older Uniden 2-line cordless system that developed some problems, but, after some online research, I decided to try this TRU8866 system.I was pleasantly pleased.The clarity of the sound is wonderful!Most people that I talk to can not tell whether I'm on a corded phone or a cordless.The features are well thought out and well integrated.One early-on bonus was that you can easily copy the phonebook that you enter in one handset to the base or to other handsets.It is very easy to add Caller ID info to your phonebook.The two-line operation is intuitive; no intruction book is necessary!Another neat feature is that each handset is a wonderful, hands-free (clear as a bell) speaker phone! I'm back at Amazon to order some more TCX860 Expansion Handsets.The system is great.As far as durability and longevity, only time will tell.

How Good Is This Handset/SpeakerPhone?
So good that callers do not even know I am on a speakerphone when I am on this handset outdoors, 100 feet from the base.

I have serious range issues
I was used to the Panasonic GigaRange phones and I should have purchased that, but I didn't because I already have a 2.4 network running here.

So... I got these thinking that the 5.8 would be plenty to spread across the home, even purchased a few extra base units. Sadly, it only works in the very room the base is in, all the other rooms it is spotty and difficult to have a conversation.

I called Uniden tech support and they were far less than helpful, saying that the house was interfering with the signal. I even informed them that the wireless network had connectivity in ALL sections of the house, even out towards the pool and that I couldn't even use the phone out in the hallway outside my room!

I'd not recommend this phone for anyone who wants range on the cordless, but if it's a small apartment or single room office, that's perfect!

Now I gotta find out how to return this thing and get something that'll work.

Very Poor Range
I live in an 860 sq. ft. apartment, and the reception cuts in and out when I am on the opposite side of the apartment versus the base.I would not recommend this phone to anyone.

Best cordless phone I have ever owned
Had recently been looking for a perfect cordless phone.I needed a phone with good battery life, good clear sound and not very expensive.I purchased the Uniden TRU 8865 5.8 gz and it has lived up to its billing.I would recommended this phone for anyone.

Nice phone with a few problems
Update as of 6/16/05:Uniden sent one of their headsets to see if it's one of my 3 headsets that may be causing the problem.The issue is still with the phone itself. I sound like I am in a cave and the volume is very low.The customer service person was not very friendly.She wanted to replace the phones with the same model AGAIN!!She sounded frustrated...wonder why??Since it's too late to return the phones to Office Depot, I am exchanging the phones for the Uniden CLX465 and hopefully the headset issue is better there.Problem here is that the CLX465 is out of stock.They don't have a way of notifying me when it's available so the only option is to continue to check the web and call back when I see it available.Also, Uniden support is not able to contact me or ship when it's available. This company is not very customer focused. If you need to use a headset DON'T BUY THIS PHONE!!!

Update as of 4/28/05:Uniden sent me a new base unit and handset.The problem is that they sent refurbished equipment.And they did not correct the handset/headset volume issue. So what was the point! The volume is still so low you really cannot use a headset and the voice sounds like you are in a tunnel on the other end.Another issue to look for is that the volume while using the speakerphone via one of the handsets is very low also.There is no adjustment for that either.The base unit speakerphone volume is fine.It's just the handsets that have the problem.My guess is that the two speaker issues are related.I will be calling Uniden tomorrow morning to either ensure New Phones are sent with the problem resolved, or begin processing the refund.


I purchased the single line version of this phone first.Business needs required me to have a two line phone, so I gave the single line phone as a gift and purchased the 2-line version.Nice phones but there are a couple issues:

1.This 5.8ghz phone does not have the range of my previous 2.5ghz Panasonic.I can't even use the intercom feature when out on the patio with this one.



2.This is the biggest issue.Sound coming from the phone to others, expecially when using a headset is very bad.You sound like you are in a tunnel and are very low. The other party cannot hear you.The volume is too low on outgoing calls from the handset using a headset.There is no adjustment for the volume on the headset either.I thought it was my headset so I tried 3 other headsets with the same result.The issue is with both the single line and the 2-line phone units.I spoke with Uniden who is exchanging both units, including the accessory handsets, and testing the headset/handset issue before shipping to ensure the volume issue is corrected.I hope this resolved the issue, or I will need to return the units.

Note, there is a $10.95 charge for the shipping and you have to give a credit card number.Your new unit is delivered within 3-5 business days.You will have 15 days to return the defective unit once you have your new unit.

3.Another issue is with dialing long distance numbers from the caller ID list.I haven't figured out how to have the unit add the 1 before the number, so far I have had to redial the number.This is very cumbersome.

Other than those issues, the phones do a good job. I am just surprised that these basic phone use issues were not caught during initial testing for the initial rollout of the product.

this is a great phone.i am told by my phone-call-counterparty that the speakerphone, which i use all the time for work-related conf calls while telecommuting, is of exceptional quality at their end.

my expectations have been completely met.

Battery life is very poor
The features of the phone are nice.The sound is clear but none of this matters if the phone lasts 10 seconds before cutting out.Two of the three phones we purchased about a year ago have batteries that have recently failed.If you're interested in this phone, add $10-15 bucks per handset for the replacement batteries.Other than the batteries, the phone works fine.

lost a star for high price
I got one a couple of these with the main base unit a year or two ago with amex points. Everything's worked great, but I want to add a couple more handsets to the mix and they're damned expensive! $50 - $60 sounds like a lot more reasonable price for these. They're also hard to find. It seems like panasonic didn't make them for long, and newer handsets won't work with my base phone AFAIK. I also replaced the batteries with Energizers and they still work great.

Great features -- poor battery life
Excellent features on the phone.I work at home often and wanted one with clarity, mute button, many memories, caller ID, speaker phone and a headset jack.

The only complaint is the battery life.After 2.5 hours of use it dies.Then it takes 6 hours to charge to full capacity.

Bottom line:Great phone for features and for casual use.Bad phone for business use when you are on constant conference calls.

Great phone, features; easy setup - battery life is poor
I bought a couple of these units to expand my KX-TG5100 base unit.Setup was a snap as was synchronizing phone books.

The handsets are identical with the one that comes with the base unit.I've found the speakerphone on the handsets to be a great feature.I also love the simplicity of the interface.

The batteries that come with the units out of the box are terrible and could not hold a charge after six months; however, I've found that the Energizer ER-P511 is a great replacement battery for the Panasonic P-P511 that comes out of the box, and is fairly cheap at anywhere between 10 and 20 bucks.

As for the class action suit, most of the phones listed are Panasonic's 2.4GHz models in the KX-TG22 through KX-TG27 range; you've probably seen these phones stacked up in droves at Costco or Walmart.I've had my KX-TG5100 5.8GHz unit for almost two years and have never had any problems with interference, contact loss or keypad failure.

Love the phone but Poor Batter Review

great phone!!
I just baught this phone today and I love it already. See we returned two other phones today,before we relized that 2.4 ghz phones are not compatible if you have a wirelss network in your house, so we went for this one at a 5.8 ghz freq. So if you have a wireless internet conection in your house save your time and go 5.8 like this phone here. The asortmant of rings are unique and not to anoying.
but, if you are looking to get a great phone for less ,about 40 dollars less, I really liked the one we had to return, just remember if you have wirelss internet dont bother. Features missing
For prospective buyers:This phone has no ability to transfer the phone book between handsets and/or base unit (you have to enter the number manually into each one) and has really irritating ring choices.

wireless LAN users please read this
I do not own this wireless phone
but I was checking the replacement of Vtech, which has a lot of static, and the voicemail records without any reason
when I check this model, I found this phone is running on both 2.4 and 5.8GHz (same as Vtech)

Not good with wireless communication
This is the second 5.8 we purchased and returned.It disconnects our wireless internet when the phone is in use.We have to turn the computer off and reboot to get it back once the call has ended.Funny, the label states this was developed just for wireless connections.We tried the Panasonic KX-TG5240M first which I commented on too.

The sound quality seemed to be good and battery life okay, just kills the internet... Really liked some of the features, but was a little complicated to program.You only have to do that once, though.So, if you are not worried about the wireles internet and can work your way through the first programing, this might be a good choice.

We are on our third brand, Radio Shack's 5.8.Funny, it costa LOT less and so far no problems.

main pros and cons
This phone is top of the line AT&T has to offer.It includes all the features we often use as consumers.However, remember that this technology is rather new to the cordless phones market.If people learn about them and find out how they are best used, it will minimize the complaining factor.The only negitive thing i see about these new phones is their warrenty.When you pay that high the warrenty should be at least 3 years.

Panasonic does it again( KX-TG5202M )
Last phone was a Panasonic it endured 11-12 years of daily use.Purchased the KX-TG5200M,for it's features,2 phone set,speaker phone,ect.So far so good.I don't for-see any problems.
The volume control is outstanding,clarity is good.Topping it off they are not that bad to look at either.User friendly.Outstanding product.I don't expect nothing less from a Panasonic.

Annoying Caller ID Problem and Disappointing Quality
We bought the KX-TG5210M and the optional extra handset (KX-TGA520M) in Dec. 2004.The display on the option handset quit working in Jan. 2005.Like the other reviewer said, a phone that doesn't work is worthless.In addition, after answering a call on one of the handsets, the other handset (the one I didn't answer) shows a missed call even though I just answered it.This is annoying because you can't keep track of calls you missed because some of the calls shown as missed were actually answered.

Great Phone
This is a great phone that has great features.Don't listen to the negative hype.There is usually a great rebate offer too.I got 20 bucks and I think they are up to 30 now.

This handheld phone has seven different ringers (on the base unit KX-TG5240M), and can control all the base unit functions.It can also be used to monitor a room (like a baby monitor), check the voice mail, phone to phone conference, multiple (up to 5) conference, and many many more features.If you have multiple handsets, you can use it as a pager for each OR all handsets at a time.

I experience excellent clarity several hundred feet away from the house, and that is through three concrete walls.This model comes equipped with NiMH batteries, which beat the heck out of NiCd in both capacity and long (battery memory free) life, which is a huge bonus, considering how much replacement batteries cost nowadays.

My wife loves the talking caller ID so that see doesn't have to cross the room or even clean her hands while cooking to answer some annoying telemarketer.

Good quality, good clarity, and the longest lasting best batteries!

Needs improvement
For about a month, I've been using this system with a total of 3 handsets for VoIP. Sounds great, I like the feel and some of the features like speaker phone and talking caller ID. Here's what I'd add/change:

When one handset answers the phone, the other handsets should not display a missed call.

One handset should be able to erase all the other handsets missed call log.

The handsets should display the time and date.

The handsets should be able to supercede the caller ID. Meaning: when the phonebook is programmed with a friends work number and the handset receives the call from the friend, the company's name displays instead of the friend's name in the phone book.

Single button dialing to the carriers voice mail system. Doesn't make much sense to press the VM button and then the talk button or vice-versa.

Steer clear...
I bought the base station (KX-TG5200M) and a second handset (KX-TGA520M) and both failed within 2 months. (Comapred to my last Panasonic 900MHz phone that lasted 8+ years and counting...)

Vonage and this phone

An Excellent 5.8 Ghz phone
I have been trying out a number of phones lately, and this
Uniden phone has by far the best reception of the bunch.The connection is very clear and callers sound like they are in the next room.In fact this is the clearest cordless phone I have ever had, and I have had many office and home phones for my home office.The features are pretty nice, and fairly comprehensive.The speakerphone in handset is a really nice and addicting feature. The battery life is not quite as good as my previous Panasonic phone.

I use this phone with the Vonage VOIP phone service and it is plugged into the wireless router and sits about three feet from the wireless antennae.I have had no problems with interference. I did have interference problems on other 5.8 GHz phones I tried.Many 5.8 Ghz phones do use the 2.4 Ghz spectrum for part of the signal, so still may interfere with 802.11B & G wireless.

Finally a 5.8 GHz phone that has quality!
I was looking for a handset that would not interfere with 2.4Ghz wireless that has taken over my neighborhood and caused many reception problems. Saw the Motorola 5.8Ghz and thought I'd give it a try after trying out a Panasonic 5.8Ghz which sounded like I was talking through atin can. Unfortunately Motorola was just a bit better on sound quality, but not much. The last part of every word gets cut off. I couldn't go far from the base without loosing signal and the volume was low to medium. Battery life was marginal at best.I am slightly hard of hearing, (but have perfect pitch) so having a little more juice in this department would be good. The features are okay but, layout and interface are primitive compared to other phones in this price range. I guess the3rd time is the charm because I ended up finding the 5.8GHz Uniden Tru 8860-2 finally with normal human voice quality and volume when needed. The layout and functionality for the features are intuitive and easy where the phone is not drawing attention to itself because of it's quirkienessand low quality (Motorola and Panasonic.) Take it from me, if you are looking for a 5.8 Ghz phone, get the Uniden

A very good phone.
Like most people, I have purchased an unreasonable number of sub-$50 phones over the last few years, and universally, they have turned out to be crap.I finally took the financial plunge and purchased the Uniden TRU8860-2 (which is actually two handsets) and have been very, very pleased.It is extremely easy to use, is a real digital phone (DSS), has a great range, is loaded with features (that are easy to access), does not conflict with my wireless network, has a good battery life and acceptable sound.I have some slight criticisms that should not discourage you from your purchase:I don't find the sound quality to be as clear as I would hope (this has a very faint hiss), but there is no denying that it is still FAR better than all other cordless models I've purchased.Also, I find the handsets a bit small for my taste (others will disagree, to be sure), but again, a small price to pay for finally getting a cordless phone that does everything it should do - every time.

Best phone I've ever had!
I have owned some decent but expensive Panasonic phones and a V-tech system that I wasn't crazy about in the past.This system is my favorite by far because of its great sound clarity and features, easy programming and reasonable price.I did spend some time inputting nearly 50 numbers into the phonebook including distinctive rings for frequent callers but copied it to the second handset in about 30 seconds!The phonebook shares memory space with the caller id log but you can store up to 100 numbers either way.You can also program 10 numbers on speed dial and a separate voicemail access number.I am also very excited about the message waiting indicator because I have an answering machine on my fax and rarely remember to check my voicemail!Now when someone leaves me a message I'll be sure to get it!You can use a handsfree accessory purchased separately or speakerphone on the handset AND you can even use the phones as walkie talkies in or outside of your home!This phone system has everything and I will be purchasing additional handsets to replace all of my other phones.

Great phone
I am very pleased with this telephone set.I works great!My husband, who is hearing impaired, loves the super efficient volume control.I enjoy the intercom feature as well as the room monitor feature.The light up screen is a big help in a poorly lit room.I know that I have only scratched the surface of its capabilities.I have gone through many telephones over the past 12 years and I must say that this one is the best I have found yet.I hope it will be a very long time before this one needs replacing. ... Very good phone system
Easy to set up and use, lot of features and has very good reception. I got the 5.8 verswion as opposed to the 2.4 version because it is not suppost to interfer with wireless lans. It has not. Only down side is that you have to enter a number in the directory into each handset. 3 hand sets three different entries. It would be nice to have the ability to down load a number directory from the base station to each Handset.

Very nice phone system
An incredible little phone system. We purchased a full compliment with 3 additional handsets a few months ago. So far it's been great. The default ring tone is nice but the other options are pretty annoying. The screen is easy to read and the menu system is very easy to navigate. The speakerphone is surprisingly clear. There has been no interference and our wireless computer network hub is only 10' away from the base. The Voice Enhance feature is pretty much worthless. It makes everyone sound like a Decepticon. The signal won't make it through our building's firewall about 200' away but I have yet to find a phone that will.

One point on caller ID: The handsets that do not answer a call will display "XX Missed Calls" but the caller ID data is still there. Hitting the up/down button will take you right to the numbers, just like on most cell phones. From the other reviews is sounded like Caller ID data would not be recorded on idle handsets.

This system replaces the hellish nightmare we had been using: the Siemens 2420 Gigaset. The Siemens phones had bad internal electrical connections that resulted in the earphone cutting out and non-functioning buttons. Those Siemens phones also had the worst menu system ever devised for a phone. Transferring a call was so complicated we got in the habit of physically handing the phones to the person the call was for. We're still getting used to being able to transfer calls!

Misleading product
I purchased this phone, specifically for the mailbox functionality claimed by Panasonic ("Up to 3 mailboxes").

Unlike their other products, this product DOES NOT support mailboxes. Only after several conversations with their technical support did I "help" them come to the conclusion that their web site and product specs are incorrect.

Very good phone but could use better user interface
I've owned several multi handset systems over the last 4 years beginning with the product the started it all off, the Siemens 2420.Don't even get me started on how bad the Siemens cordless handset reception is.Everyone who uses one knows they are pathetic.Other than the poor reception, the Siemens 2420 and 8825 still have the best menu system and setup of any multi handset system, Panasonic 6500/6502 included!

Just so everyone understands, Panasonic, Uniden and most companies (I believe Vtech/AT&T included) use the same chipsets from www.dspg.com.This is why the ergonomics of most of these systems are the same or similar.I'll list the advantages and disadvantages I see in the DSP Group implemenation as compared to Siemens way of doing things....

Advantages:
-Excellent handset reception (even the 2.4Ghz models are OK and do not experience much interference)5.8 is very clear with no interference in my home.
-handset range is actually better than I suspected at 5.8Ghz (remember the higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength
and generally the shorter the range).
-Room/baby monitor

Disadvantages:
-no handset naming
-handsets show missed call even if the call is answered by another handset.
-no password lockout for settings (such as answering machine PIN).Can't lockout the kids from being nosey.
-only supports 2 digit answering machine PIN
-When remote checking answering machine it does not support reading of caller ID info for message (how many people say "call me" but you don't remember their #)?
-overly complex menu to manipulate answering machine from remote phone.
-does not set time by using caller ID info
-4 handsets only
-True Speech voice compression quality is horrible even if set to "enhanced" mode.

So, reception alone is enough to convince me to keep this system and toss my aged Siemens.Ergo-wise, I will definitely miss my Siemens.Unfortunately Siemens Corporate tells me they will not have a new phone system until the second half of 2005.

Sorry that this review turned into a comparison to Siemens, however I feel that DSP Group, Panasonic, Uniden, etc. who support them need to get of their rocker and begin to expand the feature-set of the chipsets to support features that people can really use!!!

VERY Satisfied with this phone
I purchased this phone with three additional handsets and I am extremely happy with it. The quality is excellent, compared to 2.4GHz phones, and it does not interfere with my wireless computer network. The range is excellent. All features are easy to use, clearly explained, and function perfectly. The phone has a great feel to it, and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Not well executed
There are, at this time, exactly two 5.8 GHz 2-line expandable phone systems -- this Panasonic and the Uniden TRU8866 -- and I found it frustrating to research them because they're new and there's not much information out there. So my two cents, should it be helpful...I bought this Panasonic 6500B and three handsets, played with them for a week, and called today for an RMA number to return them. I'm now evaluating the Uniden system, which I think I'll end up keeping.

(For reference, I'm migrating from a Siemens gigaset 2420, 2-line 2.4GHz system, amazon item B00004R7R1. It's noted for a few quirks, but it's been solid for 6 years and I'd easily favor it over the Panasonic.)

Pros:
-- you only have two options at present, so this phone does deliver 2-line 5.8 GHz functionality
-- blinking antenna for ringing/message was a nice touch
-- all of the basic stuff you'd expect...intercom, speakerphone, Caller ID, etc.


Cons:
-- poor sound quality, even compared to my 2.4GHz system -- there was a constant hiss even when standing near the base, and it wasn't line noise. (There is a voice boost/voice enhancer function, though even the manual notes that it might amplify any existing line noise you may already have.)

-- one 'feature' that tilted me toward the panasonic was a 'shared' phone directory among the handsets and base. It actually works like the Siemens - you have to manually copy phonebook entries from one handset to another, so keeping them all in sync is a pain.

-- The handsets didn't behave like extensions of the same line; when you answer a call on one handset, all of the others display 'missed call', which you must then clear from EACH handset. So I always seemed to pick up a handset with a few missed calls, which were actually answered on a different handset.

-- Lack of an aux port so the phone can catch the distinctive ring and shuttle a call to the fax (btw, the Uniden doesn't have this either)

-- Misc. minor annoyances: Panasonic still uses a two-digit code for the answering machine, as it did ~15 years ago. Only eight ring tones (4 ring/4 melody), none of which were great.

-- basic interface is just crude compared to other modern phones/cell phones (I'm a techie with a UI/usability background, so I do have bias there).

Overall, I found this Panasonic to be a step down from the Siemens. I've only had the Uniden for a couple days, and I'd certainly say it's the better option of the two. ... Read more
