On the minus side: when a call comes in and if the number is matched to someone in the phone memory list, the selected ring tone will sound - but the name displayed is from the Caller ID info - not the name programmed into memory. 50% of the calls I get are from numbers behind PBX exchanges (or equivelent) where the caller id name information is generic ("California Call", "Wireless Call", etc.). I'd recommend this phone to my friends - but this isn't the "end all" phone for me ... I'll keep looking at new phones with more caller ID features.
ON the serious side. The features are nice/functional and it is a great product for the price you pay.

We've had no complaints at all with this telephone. It features different types of rings so I can always tell when it's my mother calling me. And the speakerphone feature is awesome. Clear and clean. Folks on the other end of course know you're on speakerphone but it cuts back and forth between their conversation and yours very easily.
My sense is that the "cordless" aspect of the phone (900 MHz DSS) works quite well. It is everything else about the phone that stinks! 1) The acoustics on the phone are awful. The speaker sounds awful, and the microphone is incredibly tinny.I would expect better performance from a $...phone. Also, the location of the mic (microphone) is quite poor. When friends & relatives call, they all comment on how poor we sound (using the Uniden 3965). 2) There is a huge time delay when picking up the phone before the phone becomes active. We will be saying "Hello Hello", while the caller can't hear us.Once or twice, the caller has inadvertently hung up. 3) Lots of other small anoyances. For example, it has the num pad on the base unit (nice for using using voice-mail).However, if one selects this key pad, then all audio goes through the base unit and not the head set.Pretty poorly designed! I would have returned this to Amazon if I had not exceeded the 30 day limit (I had procastinated setting it up).My loss!

I've had the phone for a week now, and I take it with me when I'm walking the dog. The calls are clear with no breakup. I have tested this phone and have talked on it from almost a block away. I experienced problems when the microwave is on and I'm in the same room, but so what? All I had to do was move about 12 feet away to stop the static. The only reason that I'm not giving it 5 stars is that it's a bit difficult to program the speed dial numbers - mainly because I'm trying to read the instructions while pushing the buttons - after a minute or so, if you don't get the info entered quickly enough, you have to start over again. But that's a small complaint. I have no comments on the answering machine - I am using the phone over the Internet (Vonage) - so all my unanswered calls go to a voice mailbox. In short, if you want a great phone and can pick this one up refurbished, I suggest doing so. Obviously, I can't comment yet on durability or long term reliabilty yet, but I felt stongly enough about my initial experience with this phone to write this review.

Product Description Features Reviews (8)
The range and areas you can take the phone are unbelievable. It works happily and without break up in my building, made of brick and concrete, and works in areas that I thought would not be possible inluding part way into the basement! The physical design is also great, the handset is about the perfect size for holding, and the base is also well designed. Functionality of the phone is also great, with one exception (covered later). The design of the keypad on the handset, although making some selections a little slow, does a lot to help stop you from making mistakes. Being able to choose between allowing callers to record one or four minutes of message, and a remote message collection function that lets you know if there are no new messages by not picking up after the second ring is excellent. Having different greetings on each line is also pleasing. The second battery in the base is exellent because it serves as a back up battery if the one in the handset dies, and as a backup power supply on the base if the mains go off. Battery life of both is also excellent, the handset going happily for up to two weeks without being put in the base to charge. Being able to have a two hour conversation when the mains were off really impressed me. The possibility to have a headset connected with the handset makes conversations on the phone much easier, and allows you to have both hands free while you talk. The base and handset being able to each handle separate calls on the two lines is also excellent. Individually turning on and off answering for each line is another excellent feature. One thing I have not noticed is the hum that other reviews have spoken about, although I live in Europe and our different mains supply and different power supply I use almost certainly explains that. There is 230volts here and I have the phone operating at 1 volt above its rated level (this is no problem) on the different to provided power supply. (shhh though, these phones are illegal to use in Europe because they operate in a section of the frequency spectrum where mobile phones in Euope operate, and its transmission power exceeds what is permitted in Europe. I got it through a friend because the corldless phones availabe in Europe are three times the price with less than half the functionality, and therefore pure crap next to this phone) Now for the disappointments. Setting a name into the memory is horrible, and why I don't give this phone 5 stars. The keypad is not used like a mobile phone, you have only the up and down keys to scroll through all capital, small, and special characters to select the character each time. It would have been little extra effort from the programmers to use the keypad properly for this. The sound quality of both the handset and base are slightly disappointing, and you do have to speak up a little more on the handset than usual for the other person to hear you properly. The base can also handle a call as hands free, but the other person can't hear you unless you are almost shouting or hold the base right at your mouth. I expected better from Uniden on these. The other thing I don't like is that although you are able to record a conversation, that recording is only available in the phone digitally, and the phone puts in a beep every 15 seconds, so the other person knows you are recording the conversation. The solution to this is to make up your own cable that can go to the headset and a recorder, so recording a conversation is much more discrete. Despite the minor disappointments, this phone is still the best overall I have found anywhere and at the price, you wont get better. I can fully recomend this phone to someone who is interested in it, and feel people can expect and get a great phone. ... Read more | |

Amazon.com Review Setting up the phone for basic operation was easy--we just inserted the battery pack, plugged in the AC adapter/recharger, and connected the phone cable to the standard RJ-11 jack. We recommend that you allow the battery pack to charge for an uninterrupted 20 hours before using the phone. You control the features through the base unit's front-mounted button and side-mounted switch; the handset has an LCD display and 11 buttons in addition to the usual 0-9, #, and *. You may need to consult the manual to learn how to use some features, such as storing and editing numbers for memory dialing or setting the caller ID options. Still, the procedures are consistent and explained well in the documentation. In our tests, we placed the unit in a basement apartment in an urban environment. The handset functioned flawlessly to about 600 feet from the base (inside a car, no less), where it began to cut in and out. At about 1,400 feet, the handset beeped, indicating total loss of contact with the base. Long distance and local calls sounded as clear as any corded phone, and the battery lasted over four hours with continuous use. With its full suite of features and its crystal-clear digital-spread-spectrum sound and security, this is an impressive cordless telephone. --Mike Brown, June 1999 Pros: Features Reviews (1)

Amazon.com Product Description Forget about the short-range, static-plagued cordless phones of the past.Basically a low-powered FM radio transmitter/receiver, cordless phonestoday use higher frequencies with shorter wavelengths so radio wavesencounter less interference. A 900 MHz phone like the Uniden EXS9950 has arange of up to 100 feet indoors. The Uniden EXS9950 offers digital spread spectrum (DSS) technology forsecurity and greater sound clarity. Based in part on a concept invented by1940s screen actress Hedy Lamarr, spread spectrum transmission switchesrapidly from frequency to frequency at random. A DSS signal needs lesspower and encounters less interference. Because of the sophisticatedencryption behind modern DSS technology, DSS cordless phone calls arealmost impossible to eavesdrop on with generally available scanners. With 20 channels of 900 MHz frequencies, the Uniden EXS9950 ensures a clearcall every time. The phone's AutoTalk feature lets you answer a call justby picking up the handset--no need to fumble for the "talk" button. Hang upsimply by placing the handset in the base with the AutoStandby feature. Screen your incoming calls with the digital answering machine, which storesup to 15 minutes of messages. The machine uses a microchip to record yourmessages instead of tape. That means you won't have to wrestle with tapecartridges or worry about jamming and skipping. The Uniden EXS9950's answering system is built into the phone's base unit,so there's no need to allot extra space on your counter or desk. Recordyour own greeting or use the prerecorded greeting included with the phone. The answering system can be set to announce only, and operated from aremote location with a four-digit code. Play all of your messages at once, or skip through to the desired message. You can also repeat and delete specific messages. It comes with a time/dayfeature, so you know exactly when a message was left. You can also use youranswering system to record a conversation, or activate it remotely tomonitor a room. Amazon.com Product Description The built-in digital answering system records up to 15 minutes of messages and features a message indicator light. Because the answering system is all digital, you never have to fumble with tapes or worry about parts wearing out.The integrated call waiting/caller ID feature displays the name and number of the caller--even if you are already on the phone when the call comes in. In addition, the EXS 9980 can store up to 50 numbers on the caller ID log at a time. This phone's convenience features include 20-number memory dialing, backlit keys for dialing at night or in low light, and three-number redial memory. When fully charged, the Uniden EXS9980 has an estimated battery life of 10 days, plus you can store an optional battery in the base of your phone. It's a complete telephone solution--DSS phone, caller ID, and answering system--in one convenient, attractive package. Features Reviews (14)
All in all, I like it plenty, and it's also the top-rated cordless brand in Consumer Reports. Enjoy!
1) there isn't any obvious way to adjust the ringer volume 2) the dialing sequence seems to have a timing dependency.Sometimes, I dial a number and press "talk" and the phone dials (as I'd expect).Sometimes I dial the number and press talk, and the number disappears so I have to start over from scratch.Very frustrating. This makes the phone unusable for slow dialers. ... The range is incredible! I accidently took the phone with me when I left the house and more than two blocks away I heard a beep.Looking down at the display, there was an "out of range" indication. The thing kept beeping (should beable to silence this but I could have taken the battery out) but upon myreturn, I picked up the phone in aprox. the same location and there was avery clear connection.Again, awesome range more than two blocks from myhouse. The display indicates Plenty of caller ID information as well asthe handy address book (sorted only by alphabet, to get users to the top,you can use numbers like 01, 02, etc... Not too much of a nuisance to MEanyway) Very good audio quality, those I connect to hear me loudly andclearly.I have purposely tried to make it echo by turning up the volumeand cupping my hand in front of the mic but to no avail, nope! This thingperforms like a champ and I love it.I have a slight problem with theheadset (AT&T 90800) The volume I get from the ear portion of theheadset is less than desired, and the mic doesn't perform nearly as well asthe mic in the handset of the phone itself.A caller told me I was muchclearer when I unplugged it.I am thinking about trying the 40 dollar onebut am hessitant. Overall, I think the phone is wonderful, I love thespare battery feature as it enables the base unit to opperate in a powerfailure, and provides a nice fresh one should the portable indicate a weakone.... The only reason Ihaven't given this unit a five star rating is because of the headsetvolume, and that may, or may not actually be the phone's fault.(I amhoping it is because of the AT&T headset which is comfortable yetperhaps not effective) Hope this helps.
