2-0 out of 5 stars Works but has issues!
The unit has some nice features. When you are online the right side of the unit flashes bright light green and makes an alert tone to surely get your attention if you're out of the room.Works like any other callerid device. I.E. When you receive a call, you can redial by pressing a button.

When you're online and the alert tone goes off you simply lift your receiver that's connected to the unit and press the "call waiting" button. You can talk as long as your modem will allow (mine is roughly 10-15 seconds) then hang up and your still online.

On the back of the unit are 4 jack ports (line in, phone, computer and fax)

One thing that is annoying is that every once and awhile it will click and I lose internet connection for about 10 seconds.I enjoy playing poker online and this sometimes folds my hands because I time out in the game. It's a little annoying because it can happen every 5-10 minutes or not at all.

I called AT&T and asked them if this was normal operation and they said that I had a defective unit.

I brought it back to the store that I purchased it from and got a new one.I had the same issue with the new one.In my opinion, it's a glitch in the unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars AT&T 438 works great
Have had the AT&T 438 for 10 days & it works great.Changed from cable to dial-up connecton (have caller ID and call waiting).I use internet for messages & websites. The flashing light when a call comes in is really large & no way you could miss it: press button & pick up phone if you want to answer the call.Easy to install-no problem.Bought at Walmart for $25.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gave it a second try!
I purchased this item 2 weeks ago from Wal-Mart for $35, but have only been using it for a few days. When I first connected the box to my computer, I had an expandable cordless phone system connected to it.The box did what it claimed, however when I was using any one of my cordless phones for a voice call, no caller-id / call-waiting information was displayed. Instead it was displayed on the box, which was upstairs by my computer. With me being home during the day (high time for telemarketers), this was not going to work. I had a 2-line phone adapter laying around, so I thought that I would connect my cordless phone system directly into the wall, rather than into the back of the unit. That fixed my CID / CW problem, but when I was on-line and another call came in I had to manually sign off of the internet before I could pick up the call. By the time my connection signed off, most of the callers had hung up. So, in the box this thing went.

After some research, I downloaded computer software which was supposed to do the same thing but through my modem. This worked for a week, but then I noticed that I was being notified of only 50-60% of the calls coming in. On top of that, even if I chose to ignore the call I was quickly disconnected.

I pulled the Internet Call Alert box out again and decided to give it another try. Here is how I got it to work for me. I still use the 2-line adapter for my phone line. My expandable cordless phone system goes directly into the wall using one line. The Internet Call Alert box is plugged into the second line. Into that I have my modem/pc connected, a fax machine, and then I added a corded telephone which I only use to answer incoming calls while on the net. With that, I have also added voice mail to my telephone package to answer calls which I choose to ignore. In the end I have spent less than $45. Up front that's not so good, but in comparison with internet call alert programs charging a monthly fee I would have spent more than that in less than a year.

I have not noticed any type of page freezing, or false signals. I have been able to answer a few very short phone calls without being disconnected, and when I choose to ignore the calls it's happy surfing. I only use the internet for e-mail, research and chatting. I like that this box displays caller id information, and it seems to work like a normal caller id box even when not on the internet. The call waiting alert makes an audible sound and also 1/4 of the box flashes. It's not just a little LED light.

Overall, I gave this product 4 stars because I have been using it for less than a month.

1-0 out of 5 stars For absolute novice users only.
The device appears to work very well at a glance. However, when you're working with any sort of constant data stream (i.e. online games, chat, etc.), the stupid thing renders itself useless.

Once connected to the internet, the device will audibly 'click' at random intervals, and your connection will effectively freeze for several seconds... sometimes as long as 15 seconds. The 'clicks' may subside for as long as ten minutes, or they may occur several times one right after the other (which adds up to almost a full minute of no data going in or out!).It doesn't make any sense, and it's not addressed in the manual.I tried to troubleshoot the problem on my own, but I don't know why it's even happening in the first place.

It's very frustrating.Maybe my unit is defective, maybe it's not.Maybe my line causes the device to behave this way, or maybe not. After experimenting with several devices of this nature, I'm convinced that DSL or Cable internet is the only internet that can peacefully co-exist with a single phone line in the same household.56k is either on or it's not.Software that manages incoming calls is not a viable option for me.

I really wanted to like this device.I really liked the design and features, but I just can't recommend it to anyone.Say, if all you do is surf and check e-mail, it is very likely that this device will *still* slow you down and interrupt your usual online habits.I mean, it does a fine job of alerting you of calls when they come in... but when the connection is this useless, why even bother signing on?1 star.Move along, folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Performs As Advertised
I have caller ID with caller ID waiting as well as home voice mail. When I am online, incoming calls come up on the display with the name and phone number. The unit beeps and flashes when you receive a call. You can turn down the beep or turn it off altogether. You can hook a phone up to it to take a call that is important, although I have not done this.

I also like that a light will flash and it will display an envelope icon when I have a voice mail message. There is also a light that shows that your modem is connected. If the light goes out you know that your connection has been dropped. In conclusion, it does everything I expected of it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Earbud works great with minor modification
I've been using the same Jabra earbud for over 2 years now (in fact mine is so old, it's the original design with the microphone built into the earpiece), and it still works great, with one minor modification. The ear gel kept falling off when I removed the earbud (leaving the gel in my ear), and also fell off all the time in the car, in my pocket, and everywhere else. So, after the second time I lost my ear gel, I glued the gel on the earbud (with "Household Goop"), and it's been working great since. The reception and transmission have been fine with my Motorolla phone, and now I'm buying one for my wife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great after 3 years
After trying many other earpieces, this is the only one I will use -- I can't use an earbud without the molded eargel (I don't have that little "dip" in the outline of my ear canal so the little buds w/o gels fall out) and I hate those earpieces that wrap around your ear or have a boom coming out the side of your head -- they are too weighty and bulky and eventually become uncomfortable.

Plus, I really like the eargel. It's lightweight, funnels the sound directly into my ear (no variations because it's always in the same place) and provides a lot of security -- it never falls outwhen I'm walking or getting out of the car. If it feels uncomfortable, you are probably using the wrong size eargel and should try another size.

Third, and probably most important, the sound is terrific -- in both directions. After many years of use (the same product but I've had to replace it once -- the cord frayed from constantly being bent and put away) I've never even once had anyone complain that they couldn't hear me, that I sounded far away or fuzzy, etc.95% of my use is in a moving car -- a truck -- which isn't as quiet as a Mercedes or BMW;it still sounds really good.

This product works exactly as it should, is comfortable to wear and is VERY inexpensive. What more could you ask?!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Crap
I have the version of this with the cord winder built in (only difference is it does not have the on-cord answer button). As most other reviewers have said, the quality of the microphone could only be worse if it did not work at all.

I would assume Jabra would have "field tested" the unit, such as normal use in a relatively quiet moving car, but I guess not, since your caller simply cannot understand you in that situation.

Personally I also feel that the eargels are horrible no matter what size I use- feels like I have an acorn jammed in my ear.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yes it breaks within 6 months, but its the best design...
I have been using the Jabra earbud for over 3 years now.Its been a love/hate relationship.I love them because they fit so easily into the ear, the sound quality is great and I love the in-line answer button.I hate that I have had to replace them approximately every 6 months or so!The cord shorts out and just stops working. On one set, I had the ear bud become detached from the unit.Well, that's my two cents, excuse while I order another set...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good headset
I have owned this product for about a year now and half of the time I get complaints that I sound far away or that people can't hear me. I'm going to buy a new one, try to avoid this product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks incredible - but looks come with a price
The Discovery Called ID Globe is a thing of beauty - the rotating text looks incredibly bright and flicker-free, especially amazing when you think that there's no text there, and it's being generated by a spinning single line of LEDs. The text displays various info - current time, date, last caller and even preprogrammed messages at the appropriate date such as Happy New Year, Happy Holidays etc. You can also program in your own messages as well as reminders for specific days. The transitons between messages is also cool, with the text floating upwards, going backwards or disolving.

My only gripe is that since it rotates 360 degrees the caller's ID is backwards for 50% of the time (if you see what I mean) - it's on the other side of the globe and you see it from behind. This often results in physically having to pause the scrolling to see the number of the person who called. This is a minor complaint given the globe's wow factor and whilst it's a case of style over practicality, it's one I'm prepared to live with. Recommended for geeks and gadget freaks. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad alternative to wiring a new phone
This gizmo certainly solved my problem with not having a phone jack in a room that I needed one in.The only drawback I found was that it's NOT compatible with caller id.Otherwise the unit works great and has a good range from base to extension unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Caution - not compatible with RC 930 wireless modem system
I wanted to add an additional extension to my RC 930 wireless modem. This was the only RCA extension unit that I could find so I ordered it. I now know that the RCA wireless phone and modem systems are not compatible. RCA confirmed this over the phone and also said that the modem extensions are not sold separately.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you are only using for phones, not modems
We moved into a condo unit that had only one phone jack for the whole 2 bedroom unit (it was a luxury renovation of an old building).I didn't want to spend on installing extra jacks and with a toddler in the house I didn't want to string wires all over the floor to run to a 3-way Y-jack, so this system looked like a godsend.

It works pretty well with the 3 phones in our house. One older phone which also happens to be the furthest away from the "base unit" near the main phone jack sometimes comes out staticky and occasionally disconnects calls, but not enough for me to complain, even though it shouldn't do this at all.The other phones work fine.

But using the modem is the problem.I normally get about 50K or so with a standard 56K modem, as they warn on the package, plugged directly into this I only get 14.4K or so, not really enough to surf the web.I did a trick where I put a 2-way Y-jack into the lone phone jack in my condo, in one jack goes the wireless jack system, in the other goes a phone wire that goes right to my modem (so already I'm giving in and carefully stringing a wire on the floor, the reason I bought this is NOT to do that). But instead of completely distinguishing the 2, this still causes minor interference.I still get a slight drop in speed (usually 33-40K), but sometimes it will disconnect me from the Web or not connect me at all (I get the infamous "Error 650" that you usually get when the modem itself is starting to die). The only fix I've had is to temporarily unplug the Wireless Phone Jack from the Y-jack in my wall when I want to surf the Web (which I then get at normal dialup speed). The only problem with this is that the way I have things setup, if I forget to plug everything back in when I'm done surfing the Web, incoming calls when I'm out will not go to the answering machine.

So I think it is a great product if you are only using it to add phone jacks without the drilling and expense for the use of additional phones, but not for use with a modem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works great but...
this little gizmo works fine for most phones but it DOES NOT work with phones with caller ID.Keep that in mind when you're considering a purchase.Works great with the others.Overall a nifty little device.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works, but pick your use carefully
I've been using a set of these for over a year, and they are a godsend but not perfect. The good news; I use it to connect my Tivo (Tivo needs to dial in every night to update its program data) and it was the perfect solution for a tough spot, since there's no phone jack anywhere near my television. I have also used it to surf the web with a dial-up connection, with no real problems. Its fine, even through an extension cord! The bad news; I've tried to use for a phone, and that rally didn't cut it. It worked, but its a bad connection. I couldn't tolerate it. So I dispute the earlier comment that it can't be used for data. For me, its only use is for data, not voice! For certain situations, its ideal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Treo600 Case
I have always wanted a Treo 600 case that doesn't make it bulky, doesn't force me to flip open and covers entire surface including screen and keyboard and still be functional. This one works great and I get very good sensitivity on touch screen even though I also have a screen protective layer under the transparent plastic cover of this case. This case also has all the right cut-outs for camera, speakerphone, mic, hotsynch cable, power and vibrate buttons, volume controls, IR port, etc and price can't be beat!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Cases but not for Treo
I've used Krusell cases before and loved them, but this particular case wasn't designed very well. The case fits well, but the plastic cover over the top makes it very difficult to use the stylus to press down on the screen. When I took the case off I didn't wanna put it back on, because it makes it so tough to access use the Treo with the stylus.I don't recommend this solution at all unless you want to use it temporarily when your Treo really needs to be protected and not everyday. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy way to hook up several things to an old TV!
I have an old TV, and just got a new DVD for Christmas. We also have a VCR and Playstation 2, and I wanted to hook them all up to the TV (DVD recommends not going through a VCR for better picture, which is true). This modulator was really easy to use. There's an RF cable going out to the TV, one coming in from the VCR/antenna, and two audio/video cables coming in from the DVD and PS2, plus space for one more a/v cable. There are buttons in front to switch between the a/v cables (one for DVD, one for PS2).It could be an ounce more convenient to have a remote to switch between the a/v cables, but, come on, we're not that lazy! I recommend this for those who need to hook up more than one a/v cable to an old TV, even if you don't know anything about electronics (I didn't!). ... Read more
