I bought my base phone about a year ago, but just got the additional handset 2 weeks ago. All I had to do was to put it in the base cradle for 3 seconds and it automatically was programmed for use. The built-in speaker phone is not the best in the world, but still pretty awesome, all things considered. The jack for the hands-free mike is awesome, and in my opinion, absolutely necessary. I won't buy a handset that doens't have a hands-free option anymore... and it's a normal jack, not some funky jack that needs an expensive adapter. The caller ID holds 99 numbers and you can easily begin and end calls and use all the features without a manual or a degree in rocketry science.
My second reaction was to the inability to use both handsets simultaneously.I feel that if a cordless system has two handsets, they should both be able to talk on one line at the same time.Plus, there is no feature to transfer the address book from one phone to another. Overall, this phone is very slick looking, and might work for someone who is satisfied with only 10 minutes of answering machine recording time and doesn't mind mediocre sound quality.I find that the older 900 mhz DSS panasonic phones offer much higher sound quality and extended range in comparison to this phone. ... The bad news for many will be the appearance. What are the product stylists at Panasonic thinking and who do they imagine the buyer is? One wonders what sort of décor they imagine will be enhanced by bright silver phones with orange LCD screens and antennas sticking up everywhere? Before you buy one, make sure that any other decision makers in the household are consulted on the appearance. The icing on the cake is the rather large baby blue and black logo announcing to the world that this is the "5.8GHz Gigarange Supreme" which completes the overall cheesy appearance nicely. Our Siemens phone may have been had functional issues, but it was well styled and disappeared into virtually any background. On the other hand, the Uniden phones make the Panasonic styling look positively restrained. Appearance earns a dismal two stars. Keypad layout is pretty typical of what one expects these days from Asian mass-market electronics companies, busy and cluttered. Why use a single button for talk/hang up when you can use a separate one for each? If there was space to add more buttons, rest assured Panasonic would have. Since the buttons actually feel good in use, are not overly sensitive and don't stick when pushed, the layout earns three stars. In the end I weighted my rating more toward function, as that's really the only area one can be objective about, and the function is strong. If you can stand to look at it, and you're not married to someone that will hold a grudge because you brought something hideous looking into the house, you probably won't be disappointed. ... I love this phone - the only reason that I'm not giving it 5 stars is because there is one feature that I'd really like that seems to be missing, which is that the memory and caller-ID still don't communicate quite as much as I'd like. The talking caller-ID function is great - no running around the house trying to find the phone just to figure out if I even want to answer. You can program in the names for your most frequent callers (which are recognized via caller-ID, even if they're not programmed the exact same way as your memory), and it can also be set up to announce full numbers of those who aren't in your memory, so you might still recognize the number without having to get to the actual phone. The 5.8 GHz works great in our house. The 2.4 that we replaced had major interference with the microwave, but this one is terrific - no static at all, ever. The piece that's still missing is the actual caller ID/memory interface. Even though you can program the talking bit, the caller ID always comes up as the official listing and not "mom", for example. This isn't bad, except that so many of my calls come in from "wireless caller", so I have to actually recognize the number. Again, the voice announce caller ID works, but if you happen to miss that (you're not close enough to the base when the phone rings, for example) then you're stuck with going, "Hmmm, I think that's my mother-in-law's cell number..." Back a few years and two phones ago, we had an AT&T model that DID include this feature, as do most cell phones. Also, that old phone had a feature that would allow you to customize outgoing messages to 10 numbers in caller ID, so that you could tell your buddy "Hey, meet me at 4:00 at the bar," but not let the whole world know where you were. That was cool, and I wish it was still a feature. The speaker phone options work well, both from the base and from the handset. The base speaker could use a few more ticks on the volume - or maybe my house is just loud - but it does work great if you stay close. It's also nice because you can answer the phone from the base if you can't immediately find a handset - a typical problem in my house! The digital answering machine function is also typically fine. There are 3 mailboxes, though we only use one. There are several ring tone options, and you can even have the handset vibrate. All in all, this is a great phone. If you've had some issues with interference on a 2.4, this is a great upgrade.
Positives are pretty much what everyone as said: Negatives: Mixed feelings: Overall, a good, solid phone, butit isn't quite perfect.I'm not sure yet if I'm going to keep it or return it and continue waiting for the perfect phone.
Con's Call waiting ID feature did not work (might be isolated case I don't know) Sorry I had to return it.

My main issue with this phone is that even at the highest volume level I still cannot hear the person at the other end of the phone. Some other problems I have encountered is the programable telephone directory which saves your numbers in alphabetical order. This is fine in theory but if you call someone frequently and their last name begins with a Z, you will spend a lot of time scrolling through the directory. In addition, there does not appear to be any way to call someone back from caller ID if they are calling long distance. The caller ID displays the area code and number and there is no way to add a 1 to the number to return the call. I think that I would have been better off buying a series of Uniden phones that I could have at least used.

Amazon.com Product Description Use the system's intercom to make conference calls and to transfer calls between the handsets and base. Sound Select lets you personalize the phone's sounds to suit your taste using four different presets. Other key features include any-key answer (which saves time in answering when you're in danger of missing a call), headset compatibility (for hands-free conversations), and a dual-battery charger with power backup (which lets you make and receive calls--even during a power outage). You can expand the VTech i5881 system to a total of six handsets while still using only one phone jack (five additional handsets not included), and you can station the additional handsets almost anywhere in your home. Each of the handsets communicates through the base, which requires only a single power outlet for operation. The included handset and any optional handsets can each function as speakerphones and also allow handset-to-handset communication. Each handset offers a choice of a silent or vibrating ringer. Overall, this Uniden phone system is great, and it hasn't let me down since I bought it several months ago. If perhaps you have a larger family and you're looking for a Uniden package with 3 phones instead of 2 that comes with a headset, check out the Uniden PowerMax 5.8; it is a awesome deal too.
+ Handsets each have speaker phone capabilities - Unit doesn't support more than two handsets. Here's the bombshell: It's that last little gem of a drawback that makes me give 4 out of 5 stars. This would be my ultimate phone if not for that. ... Read more | |

is WOW!!!! This is probably the best purchase I have ever made. This thing is everything I ever expected and more!! It's very easy to use as well! I have bought other brands before, and this one just blows everything else out of the water! I have to say, everyone out there who is thinking of buying this, stop thinking. I bought it and I am extremely happy with it the moment I powered this thing on. YOU ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS PURCHASE! I GUARANTEE IT!!!
The only thing you can change is the general greeting message and the mailbox messages. YOU CAN'T set your own extention numbers, define how many rings to allow before picking up, set to go to mail box automatically if there's no answer, etc, etc, etc. If all you really need is a multi-line phone with answering machine, look elsewhere, there are far better phones for 1/3 the price. If you need the auto-attendant functionality, this is unfortunatly the only phone available short of purchasing a more expensive PBX system. If you want an idea of how limited this system is: go to Panasonic's web site and download the product manual PDF from the support section.

Amazon.com Product Description In addition to the headset, the VT 1511 comes with a corded desk set with a keypad, from which you can access the 20-number speed dial and intercom feature between base unit and headset. It also comes with an infrared remote-control dial card, which you can use to dial numbers when away from the base unit. The VT 1511 digitizes your voice using advanced ADPCM digital voice encoding to provide noise- and distortion-free performance. In most conditions, you will not be able to tell you are using a cordless phone. The VT 1511 informs you when another extension is currently in use on the same phone line. It also has an out-of-range alert, even when you're not on the phone. Other features include tone/pulse dialing, 10-channel operation with auto channel selection, spare battery charger in base unit, and a hearing aid compatible receiver. The VT 1511 uses special memory that is not susceptible to power failures. This provides permanent storage of all memory dial numbers and security codes. With an optional battery pack installed in the base unit, the VT 1511 can provide full operational backup in case of power failure. Calls can still be placed and received on the headset without interruption. With a fully charged battery pack in the base unit, you'll have up to five hours of backup usage time. It's true that they are a weird configuration where all of the stuff sits on your head, but I think it's more than worth it to not have wires everywhere.Reception is good, for me it worked flawlessly to about 50 feet through interior & exterior walls. The boom mike can break off if flexed by pulling on it repeatedly. That's a problem. But otherwise, this is some very good engineering from what I see as a usually [...] vendor (vtech).[...], but in the case of the 1511 it's really a [nice] unit. The charger for the headset is inductively coupled; no metal contacts to corrode.VERY COOL! The small box hides the fact that in addition to the headset, charging stand, and dial pad, you get a full-on desk unit with intelligently done speed dials (unfortunately not in true executive phone style [extra buttons] but intuitively programmable). It's missing a speakerphone, however. I worked out of a home office for a year doing a lot of phone consultation and sales, and this thing was great.Unfortunately, one of the units' mikes has broken (due to flexion) and now I don't know whether I should scrounge used units or what.I hope they come out with a very slightly refined version of this great product.
Anyway, now I have one, and I am quite (if not 100%) satisfied. THE PLUSES ARE: 1)Truly wireless and hands-free. 2)Relatively very comfortable on my head; easy to wear for a long conversation. (Earphones not directly on your ears, but above them, so it's not only more comfortable, but if another family member leans in close, they can participate in the conversation and still hear and be heard.) 3)Two phones in one; one cordless headset, one corded deskset. 4)Charging base for headset is *separate* from the corded phone base; therefore it need not be near a phone jack, but needs only an electrical outlet. (Great in our house, since we have no phone jack in the kitchen!) 5)Sound quality, range and clarity seem great - we've had it only one week, but so far it's terrific - even out to the garden. No interference; no cutting out, which we had read that others experienced. Sound quality on our receiver is good, and people tell us it sounds good on the other end. Compared to our old cordless phone it picks up WAY less background noise - very important for a cordless, hands-free phone! 6)Good volume control and range. I have hearing loss - need to turn it up! My husband doesn't - likes it quieter.Other phones have not been loud enough for me.This one is great, but see negative #4, below. 7)It's super-easy and convenient to turn on and off by just flipping the microphone arm down or up.But see negative #3, below. Microphone arm also very adjustable to help adjust volume. 8)Price!Because this phone has been discontinued, you can find it at a huge discount. But act fast - they seem to be disappearing (we're trying to get more for friends/relatives). THE NEGATIVES ARE: 1)It's easy to lose the remote dialer, or for it to get separated from the headset - it's little and a separate piece.Of course, that's what makes the phone truly wireless, but it would be great if they could have attached it to the headset in a removeable way - I'm thinking about adding velcro, maybe. 2)The remote dialer is almost too small - keypad is tiny so dialing has to be done carefully and precisely, and it's hard to see the commands like "mute", etc. 3)If you want to nibble or drink or make a private comment to someone in the room without the person on the other end of the phone hearing you - you can't get the microphone of this phone very far away from your mouth without turning off the phone and cutting off the connection! But maybe those are bad phone habits/etiquette anyway. 4)Volume adjustment buttons on headset are a little hard to find by touch and awkward to use, but maybe I'll get more used to them over time. 5)Battery is non-standard. ...
