2-0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised
This is a nice 4 line phone, but the digital answering system does not work. We have 2 984's and several other brand 4-line phones. I could not find any way to make either 984 work as a four line answering system. Auto-Attendent is useless in our situation. These phones are certainly not worth the money. Unfortunately there aren't many 4-line phones on the market and apparently no 4-line digital answering systems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
We have been trying to get this system to work in our office for a couple of months. Tech support has been worthless. If you want to go out of business fast because no one can call you, get this system.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for two line home office
There must be thousands of home businesses that need a two line corded phone with an answering machine, but this is not that phone and I haven't found any other either.I suggest reading the reviews of AT&T 964 all of which apply in my experience. The answering machine will only allow one outgoing announcement for all four lines. In other words, a call coming in on any of the four lines will get the same message when it reaches the answering machine.Worse if one is using one line, the answering machine will not pick up a call coming in on another line. This wouldn't be so bad except when one is using one line the ring on the other lines is so muted that it is easy to miss the ring.As others have noted sound quality can be either good or poor for unknown reasons.I gave the phone two stars because the phone has a nice feel and look and the ring tones are pleasant as are the pre-recorded messages and such. The dialing out tones are aversive and automatic dialing is really slow. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a Very Good Product
I don't get all the negative reviews. I spent over 7 hours researching answering machines; it came down to this GE model and the AT&T 1726. I decided on this one because I wanted 4 mailboxes, and I like the way I can leave a message for another mailbox right at the machine... also, I trusted GE more than AT&T.

Anyway,it's fine, works very well. Yes, the sound quality isn't quite as good as devices that use tape, but it's still very clear - remember, it's not meant to be a stereo system! Also, I noted all answering machines have many negative comments, so don't be alarmed, the devices really do work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Sound !
The sounds quality on this answering machine is horrible. My wife yells at me at least once a week for picking an answering machine where she can't understand the messages. What good are all the fancy features in the world if you can't hear the darn message!

I've looked around and it looks like ALL the major digital answering machines have sound quality problems.I plan to keep looking but my just end up buying an old cassette tape answering machine - at least I can hear the message.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great features, but unreliable
In terms of features & price, this answering machine is one of the best deals you can get. With 4 separate mailboxes and 40 minutes of digital recording time, what's not to love, right? Well, after less than a year of use, the answering machine no longer answers incoming calls. After 4 rings, the outgoing message begins to play from the speaker, but the answering machine never picks up! It took my wife and I several days of not getting any messages to figure this out. Who knows how many important messages we missed because of this? Very infuriating.

We have since replaced the answering machine with a Sprint SP-812 that we picked up used from Craigslist.org for $10. The SP-812 only has 1 mailbox and 12 minutes of recording time, but at least it reliably answers the phone... and that's the most important feature of all.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2 years and still going
I know several people have had reliability problems. We've had our GE for two years and it still works great. It didn't lose anything after a 24 hour power failure.(Don't forget to install the battery!)However, we did get caught once when we moved the answering machine in our new place and disconnected the AC cord from the base.

I love the many features.(See other reviews for details.)We use the GE as a traditional one mailbox answering machine, and we use the extra mailboxes to store messages out of the main inbox.40 minutes of record time makes this easy.Switching between the primary and secondary outgoing greeting is as simple as pressing a single button. We've checked messages remotely with no problems.

I, too, wish the time/date stamp was at the start of the message.I also wish there was some way to rewind a playing message by only a few seconds instead of having to go all the way back to the beginning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable
From the start, I had problems with various kinds of flakiness - for example, it would spontaneously lose my messages.Recently I pinpointed the cause to be the socket where the AC adapter cord plugs into the machine.Slightly moving the cord or rotating the plug in the socket causes the power to cut in and out, resulting in memory loss.Another thing I didn't like is that it takes up more desk space than the average answering machine. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing answering system
After seeing good reviews for many of the AT&T phones here ,I bought the E5900B locally. The unit seemed to have good quality build and a great features list. Unfortunately, I am returning it before using many of the features. The sound quality on the answering machine is so poor, nothing else could get me to keep this unit. I couldn't recognize my wife's voice on trial messages. It is overly compressed, like some Battlestar Gallactica robotic voice. It is worse than a 10 yr. old no name unit I had previously. I would rather have had 12 minutes of clear time than 25 minutes of this.

The handsets are good, with clear reception on calls. Range seemed acceptable, but not exceptional. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
I purchased this phone from SAM's Club - the one they sell is actually the 2489 which comes w/ an extra handset. The phones have great features, but the handsets are terrible. The sound quality comes and goes and sometimes when you try to turn the phone on it gives you a "system busy" message.

The speakerphone quality is pretty good and feature-wise the phone is great. If you're looking for a good cordless phone, this is not it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money on this phone.I bought the base unit and 2 added extensions. The instructions on the registration of the auxiliary phones omitted several steps. The base phone instructions don't even explain how to use call waiting, a pretty basic function popular since the 80's.Customer service leaves you on hold for 20 minutes, and they can't help you since they have never even seen the phone. They are just reading the same, truncated instructions you are!Maybe VTech should realize that the best advertising is word of mouth.Don't bother with this system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caller ID?
I liked this phone when I got it but am in the process of sending back the second one I purchased. The caller ID feature works on one line but not on the other. The company's help line was worthless, didn't even know how to turn off call screening.I tried everything they suggested, unplugging, taking out the battery, unplugging other two-line phones in the house that had caller ID, etc.Nothing worked. The company was very good about sending another phone but that one didn't work either. It's a shame because the ability to access the answering machine from the additional handsets was a big plus.

Voice quality was only fair, and I sometimes got a clicking sound when talking on the phone that was annoying to me and the people I was talking to.Still, I would have kept the phone for the ability to access the answer machine, the speaker phone in the base, and the light weight of the handset if it hadn't been for the malfunctioning caller ID.

Update:The company has finally admitted that the caller ID on the second line of the phones just doesn't work. They are trying to fix it and will give me a new phone when they do.In the meantime I am stuck with a phone that doesn't do what I need it to do.I have ordered an AT&T phone system but just learned that AT&T owns V-Tech so this system will probably turn out to have the same problem. It infuriates me that the company knows this is a problem but still sells the phone promising it will show caller ID, and not just on one line!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone system
This is a terrific, well-priced, and reliable phone. Reception is clear, battery life is adequate and it is simple to use. I have tried many, more expensive systems and the v-tech 2 line is the best. Additional phones can be added seamlessly and you do not need an outlet in every room. The answering machine can be acceseed from any handset and the paging functions work quite well. I now have 5 phones using 2 lines on the system and am very pleased.

1-0 out of 5 stars echo, static, poor mic volume
When using the handset there is an intermittent reverberation. When using my plantronics headset, which has performed well for 3 years with a different phone, people complain of poor mic volume and/or static. They keep asking if I am on a cell phone.

Its going back. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better sound than digital phones
After returning two digital phone systems because of their lousy sound quality, I purchased this phone system because it was highly rated in Comsumer Reports. It's worked perfectly for us.The analog sound quality is great, much better than digital phones, and now we have a phone in the bedroom without having to install a phone jack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Static, Static, Static
The title says it all.You want to hear static then this phone is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars No problemos!
We had a 2.4 GHz Olympia wireless phone system - horrible echo and static. Finally made the jump to 5.8 GHz because we went wireless with 4 computers and XBox Live. We only needed one extra handset, so notice that you cannot add extra handsets to this system. Reception and voice clarity are fantastic within our house and more than 1 block away at the community pool. Answering machine is easy to understand and the ringers are very loud on highest setting (I lost 50% of my hearing on one side). Only 10 numbers for memory storage, and you have to enter each handset memory separately (drag). Have tested use of this phone around all our computers, the microwave, and game adapter - no problemo. I highly recommend this phone if you don't need more than one extra handset.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Choice
I purchased this phone based on Consumer's Reports "Best Buy" Rating. Static has not been much of a problem. It was easy to set up and program. Only disappointment-- it does not have a speaker phone function.

3-0 out of 5 stars Consumer Reports thinks this phone is great...
The customer reviews really disappointed me, since the Oct 04 Consumer Reports has this phone as a Quick Pick for the multi-handset phones with answerer category.I'm so sad now to hear it's not as good as the article would suggest! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unusable
This answering machine has extremely poor audio quality, both on the outgoing message and on incoming recorded messages. The quality is so poor that the content of the messages is totally lost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Time, Day, Year, but no DATE
I got the machine for a friend and I and am happy with the quality and volume of the sound and also the message capacity. However, while setting up the time/day, I discovered that this machine reads the the time/day info in the following format, "Monday, 12:35 PM, 2005."So we have a message from Monday.

BUT WHICH MONDAY OF THE YEAR?!!!

If you are gone for three weeks or if you choose to save an old message for an extended period of time (yes there are good reasons to save some old messages), now you have no clue when the message was left.ATT said they have received many calls regarding this really dumb mistake and that they will include the month/date on their next model.Overall, if you do not care about the date issue, get this machine. If you need to know the date a message was left, this is not the machine for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another disappointment
I bought this machine, hoping it would be an impovement to a simliar digital model by Sony. I notice no difference, except that programming seems to be a bit less intuitive than my old machine. Also disappointing is the machine's sound quality. My outgoing message rises and falls in volume, sounds muffled and is generally pretty warbled. Remote access is unreliable. I haven't come across a good digital machine yet and am beginning to wonder if it exists at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some nice bells and whistles; can be complex and frustrating
I've been using this answering machine for almost two years now. I was originally attracted to it's multiple mailboxes and spoken-aloud caller ID feature. It delivers quite well on those two features, but is otherwise frustrating to use.

All of the unit's features are configured by pressing a single 'setup' button, and all the options are voice menu driven. This seems very convenient, but in reality it takes a good couple of minutes to cycle through all the dozens of options available to find the one you want and then set it properly. The prompts are unclear and the settings cryptic.

The absence of a back-up battery means that I lose my outgoing greeting about once a month on average. I would not recommend this unit if you have regular power outages (even a brief power 'hiccup' will reset the unit).

Probably my biggest issue with this unit is that it doesn't always work well via remote operation (when I call home using a touch tone phone). Even when I'm calling the machine from a quiet room using a regular (not cell) phone, I often find I need to enter my passcode at LEAST twice before it is recognized (and sometimes as many as 3 or 4 times). Also, the other remote operation codes are very unfriendly to enter and remember.

I've had about half a dozen answering machines in my lifetime. Comparatively, I'd say that this unit offers slightly above-average quality, but is also by far the most complex to operate.

4-0 out of 5 stars satisfied so far
First, thank you to the reviewers who explained how to record
    the outgoing message! :)

I bought this to replace a well-loved Phonemate 4200 that had
worked for almost 13 years before getting spotty. Let me
add that I agree with all who have said it: If only we could
still get dual-full-size-cassette analog machines, with
unlimited per-message length and long overall tape length!
I would have bought one if I could have found it, but the
reviews for this machine made it sound like it would do what
    we needed.

So far, so good. The set-up was straighforward except for
recording the outgoing message (for which I used the amazon.com
page as a reference). I liked that you can choose a 3-digit
security code, as well as a 3-digit code for people to dial
in if they want to be announced as a "priority caller".

We don't have caller-ID, so I didn't bother turning those
    features on.

I tested the machine, and it works as promised with regard to
being a "tollsaver" (fewer rings to answer if there are new
    messages).

The sound quality is ok, but not great, but that's ok for
    voice-message-recording purposes.

I liked that you can turn it so you either do or do not hear
the outgoing message as your caller hears.

Hangups are not recorded as messages, which is good--but
if your caller hangs up during the outgoing message, the outgoing
message does finish playing to completion.

The remote-access codes are convoluted, but there is an
available wallet card (two copies for separate users).

If you don't want to use the separate mailboxes, you can just
ignore that option and the default is to have all messages go
to the first mailbox. ... Read more

In other words, lots of claimed features, many of which are unnecessary, conflict with one another and are poorly documented. Additionally, we found that this unit (although not the 944 slave) is subject to RFI (static), which required us to relocate it to another room.

How much is your time worth? Figure on spending at least 5 hours getting this turkey up to a minimal operating level and never being able to get it to work fully.

Since the RFI appears to be generated by the answering system, consider buying a separate answering machine. The first one we bought, from AT&T, was defective. We ended up instead with the Panasonic KX-TM100B [ASIN: B00000J53X]. You'll save yourself a lot of grief by buying it instead.

Another reviewer recommends the Voice Logic Voice Pro 412 system. I don't have any experience with that one, but can't see how it could possibly be as bad as this.

If you do buy this one, or have already bought it, be sure to download and save the operating manual. Otherwise, once amazon stops selling it, you'll have trouble finding a manual. This is, obviously, good advice with any electronics product.

1-0 out of 5 stars It does not deserve the one star rating
I purchased one 964 and three 955 for my real estate business. The answering machine was very important to me.I only hope that I can return these lousy phones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not deliver on promises
I purchased this phone with high expectations based off product features especially the auto attendant. We purchased 2 each 944 and 2 eacch 964.This was for a small office (2 people)The 944 phones worked together but the 964 phones did not.The manual was the worst to date I have read on a phone system and gave no detail. After countless hours with support staff on phone (email support was a joke they copied sections from manual and sent them to me even though I had described following every step of the manual to them in detail) it was determined that while they advertised it would work with any anaolg line system it would not work ours because our system had been upgraded by BellSouth.During course of events I found out that it was common for the phones not to work together. The system never worked as promised and phone manufacture gave up trying to solve problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment and Frustration
Nothing about this product is intuitive or simple. The hardware and software for this product are poorly designed. The only reason to purchase this product is if you want a product only you can use; this may give you job security but your job will become coping with the phones. Most important, our clients didn't like the process necessary to leave a message.

The most basic operations, like taking messages and retrieving them, are complex to set up and perform.

I could not figure out how to set the machine to pick up messages without calling AT&T support.I wanted to have the machine answer the phone and take messages if no one was in the office.Instead the answer message was played three times or the caller had to select an extension to have the machine accept a message.

If the line you set up to receive messages is busy, you need to have a second 964 if you want to take a message on the second line. This means that you have to check more than one phone for incoming messages. And, if I wanted someone else to pick up messages, it took a half hour to train them because the operation was so confusing.

The phone has too many buttons. Even after using the phone for several weeks I was not able to find the redial button easily. The directory holds lots of entries but it is not easy to set up or retrieve them.

The problems just went on.Rather than waste more time trying to use the features on these phones, I set them where they are only used occasionally -- throwing away most of the purchase price for these phones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very unhappy with this product
I originally purchased two 964's to replace Casio Phonemate telephones I had been using. After three months, I went back to the Casio phones.

      Problems included:
      1. Answer function inflexible and poorly designed: If there is a way to let a caller leave a message without going into a "phone tree" I couldn't find it. Phone repeated announcement rather than take message.I had to call support to setup phone to accept incoming messages which is a basic function of the 964. When I was talking on the phone, it couldn't answer and take messages, that required a separate phone and a second place to check for incoming messages.
2.Poor hardware design: Directory was inconvenient to setup and use. Too many buttons on the face made it difficult to find a specific function quickly. Not able to use a line without having the answer function enabled on it.
      3. Poor documentation: The manual did not have the specifics I needed to figure out what I was doing wrong.

Avoid this product. Nothing about this phone was intuitive. It has no redeeming features. I'm sorry I can't give it negative stars here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value!
This is a great combination phone/answering machine; I had it hooked up in less than 5 minutes.Excellent sound quality which is critical for me, as I am hearing-impaired.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good buy
I have had this phone for nearly 2 years and have to say that I am satisfied. The sound quality is very good and the I love being able to page the handset from the base. Great speakerphone but the lack of battery backup bothers me still. A pretty good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great durable phone
I have had this phone for a good 5 years.I have dropped it countless times and it still works excellent!
    Great phone - Great price.

4-0 out of 5 stars last longer than other phones
I have had this phone for about 3 years going on four.. I bought the phone for the range. And at that time that was the highest range now they have 5.3 I believe.. Anyway the phone still works like a charm.. I have another phone in the living room and Panasonic and quiet frankly I am not happy with the phone.. But my Sony takes a licken and keeps on ticking.. The battery doesn't run down as fast as the other phone. And I can leave it off the base for more than a day with out having to charge it up..

2-0 out of 5 stars A disposable phone for a throwaway world
This product functioned suitably while it lasted. Unfortunately, it was only about 18 months. I replaced the Nicad battery twice at a cost of almost $20 per pop. And yes, I DID run the battery down as recommended and did not have it constantly on the cradle. The sound quality was relatively good and the ability to page the handset from the base was nice. The speakerphone was also relatively good. A huge complaint-No battery backup. Everytime the power went out, everything-remote access codes, basic settings and OGM had to be reset. I generally love Sony products. Not this one, however. I am still looking for a replacement. The handset is completely dead-not the battery this time. Save your money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pleasantly surprised
I haven't been in the market for a new cordless phone in awhile, and this is a great one with an answering machine. It was easy to set up. I love the internal phone book and light-up antenna. I have had no problem with static. And the speakerphone on the handset comes in handy. Another great phone/answering machine from Panasonic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Had it one year and audio cuts out -- no help from Uniden!
I've had this expensive system for one year and it is currently not functional. The audio cuts out randomly -- you can sometimes hear very faintly, but usually, not at all.I changed batteries, but the problem is now worse. The "help" offered by Uniden was to use only THEIR batteries.SO now I can spend another $30 on more batteries and that doesn't guaruntee that the problem will be solved. Not bloody likely!Crap product, crap service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock solid, crystal clear, great features (READ MANUAL!)
This is a really good phone that's taken a lot of drops and keeps on ticking. It's solidly constructed, well-engineered, and built much better than the GE/Motorola disposable phones. Plus, it looks a heck of a lot better than the other phones. I've had this since it first came out, and there's been no problems despite the accidental drops or what have you of daily heavy usage. The built-in speakerphone on each handset continues to be a stunning feature. Also, the battery life is ridiculously long, and this makes up for the lack of a battery meter. Think of this phone as a Toyota and the others as GM. Which would you trust if they made your life support systems? Enough said. The only thing that could have been improved upon: -Expandability of handsets limited (not really a problem for most). -There is no instant synchronization of stored numbers from one phone to the other (something I miss about my old Sony phone). -As mentioned before, the only warning of a low battery is an audible alert/led msg (while you are using it) that the battery is low. From that point on, you only have about a minute or so of talk time left. Like anything in life, you get what you put into it. Read the manual. Learn what this phone allows you to do. Despite a previous poster's comments, this phone easily allows you to toggle on/off the 1- (by pressing *) and the area code (by pressing #) of your caller ID listings. It's in the manual, if the previous poster had actually bothered to read it before posting his mental spasms (a priceless moment). There is a newer model out (TRU8885-2) that addresses the few shortcomings of this phone and adds some cool new ones like a smaller and better base station, albeit imo it does not look as nice. -a NYer who can actually read

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
my fiance and I have both had uniden 900 megahertz for almost a decade. When we met, we both had the same phone and continued to use them for five more years! I loved uniden, so I was really excited when this new cool looking phone came out. we waited for the price to drop somewhat and finally bought it. Well, I'm not so impressed. the main thing is that it cuts out or breaks up when i'm in my office. Every phone conversation I have to walk into the living room b/c it gets somewhat better reception out there. it's worse than my cell phone by far. i don't really use the fancy features. answering machine works well, it's very modern looking, but i'm upset every time I have to move around the house to get good reception. I think there have to be better phones out there, esp for the $$$$.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good sound. Not so good features.
Pros - The sound is great. I like the speakerphone in the handset. i like setting ring tones for diff. numbers.

Cons - The ph# memory is only 10 digits or so. If you have a longer number (i.e. using a 10-10 xxx access code) you are stuck. You have to dial a 10+ digit number manually each time.

The caller ID has an error. Lets say someone phones you from 555-xxx. You can see the number but if you try to press talk to call back, the phone does not and cannot put a 1 in front. i.e. 1-555-xx. So you have to remember the number and then phone back manually.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect phone!!
This phone has all the right features. It is very sharp looking and is just perfect. The sound and clarity is excellent. It has so many different ring tones which are fun! I was looking for a 5.8 GHZ (since that is the best out there right now) multi handsets, speaker phone and a digital answering system and I found it all in this Uniden!! I highly recommend it! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible and disappointing product
The battery life for this phone after one short year is abysmal. After charging it all night, it dies after a few hours of nonuse.
The redial button simply has never worked.
It is not user friendly at all although I could live with this if the two issues above were resolved.
I contacted AT&T and requested that they send me a new model that works since this phone is obviously defective.
If they refuse then I won't ever buy an AT&T product again and neither will anyone I come into contact with.
    It's that simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars After several years of use...
I need new batteries, finally. Until a few months ago they held a charge for well over a day whenever we left the units off their charger.

Both the phones and the answering machine are easy to format and easy to use. This set-up will do everything you need and then some. The shape is comfortable to hold, the screen is easily legible, and the buttons are well-sized and spaced. It's not klunky or gaudy...hallelujah!

We have experienced both good sound and range. The handsets perform well anywhere on a one acre lot, inside or out.

If you don't have a generator, then keep an old phone around for power outages as the base does not have battery backup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy
I've had this phone set for approx. 2 years now.Never any problem with reception, nor battery life.I will note that I do keep the phones in their chargers when not in use.Only problem, if you want to call it that, is some echo when using one of the handsets within a few feet of the other.A rarity, so I am fine with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Phones I have ever used
We bought a set of these phones because they looked nice, and because AT&T is a reliable company. But these phones are the worst. After having them for about 3 weeks, we began having terrible results with the volume/speakers in the phones. I took them back, and got a new set. These lasted about twice as long, before the battery life just became worthless. We are unable to leave these phones off the hook now for any extended period of time - say, 1 hour. And you can't talk on the phone for more than 30 minutes or so before the battery dies out, and takes 6 hours or more to get back charged again. And yes, we followed all the directions for letting the batteries charge, and all that kind of stuff. Still...I have never used a more frustrating phone, nor will I ever purchase an AT&T phone again. I bought a new phone today, and once fully charged, I will take these AT&T phones out back and smash them with a hammer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst phone ever
Bad reception, won't hold a charge for more than 15 minutes.Enough said. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to use it Forever !!!
After a month or two, you can remove it...and lend it to someone else. The bulk of the telemarketers (as well as the Do Not Call exempts) will be gone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Makes a loud, annoying tone when used with acordless phone
I bought my TeleZapper for use with a new Motorola 2.4 GHz Digital cordless phone.Whenever I press the "ON"orthe "HANDS-FREE" buttons on the handset, the phone emits a loud and annoying beep. This makes it very difficult to hold the handset close to you ear when you make or take a phone call. When I disconnect the TeleZapper, this loud tone is not present.

    Anyone else have this problem?

5-0 out of 5 stars This really works!
I must admit, I didn't expect it to, but it really does! My unsolicited calls *almost* disappeared. BTW, I do not have a problem with a "beep" noise when I pick up the phone -- it just sits there and does its thing. If only I had one for the spam in my email inbox...

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!!!!!
Or use it elsewhere.I continued to get telemarketing calls after purchasing this item. The only thing that reduced the calls was the "DO NOT CALL" list.

4-0 out of 5 stars It works - sometimes too well.
Great device... it actually works.A ring still brings you to the telephone though and, upon answering, you do hear a beep (Note: you even hear the beep when you pick up the receiver to dial out); it's a little annoying, but worth missing all of those sales calls. When a computer calls your house, as I said, you still get the ring and when you answer you hear a beep but then... silence. At that point you know TeleZapper has done its job.How does it work "too well?"Unfortunately I've discovered that it zaps computer generated calls from my hospital which they use to remind out-patients of scheduled appointments. But it works so well at zapping sales calls that I will not disconnect it.Now, with the government's "do not call" registry, I still leave it plugged in and am rarely bothered by sales calls. ... Product Description

Panasonic KX-TC1743B digital cordless telephone operates on the 900MHz frequency for extended range and clarity and more secure conversations. The fact that this model is digital, helps to secure phone calls from potential eavesdropping. This phone is also Caller ID compatible. When used in conjunction with Call Waiting Caller ID, the Call Waiting Caller ID feature will display the caller's information on the multifunction, backlit, three-line LCD display located on the handset - even if the user is currently on another call when the second call comes in. A Caller ID memory with dialer for later review and instant callback capability of received calls is also viewable via the handset display. A Direct Dialer button provides "one-touch" access to an emergency or often-used phone number.A Digital Duplex Speakerphone - the tool for multiple party conversations - is included in KX-TC1743B. Digital circuitry helps reduce the echo and dropout commonly found in speakerphones and allows more natural sounding conversations. Built-in all-digital telephone answering systems record up to 15 minutes without the mechanical woes associated with cassettes, and let users instantly hear, save or delete individual messages. These models also allow users to administer outgoing and incoming messages remotely from any telephone with voice prompts to aid the process. Each message is affixed with a time/day stamp, so you'll always know when the call was received. The phone has New Message Playback for listening to newly received calls and a two-digit LCD call counter for viewing the number of calls received. Other features include a lighted handset keypad, dual keypads, and two-way paging/auto intercom for communication between the base and the handset. Additionally KX-TC1743B has hold/flash/redial; call screening and toll saver are included too. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not reliabile
Features wise this phone is OK, but it broke within one year after purchase day.

The sound in the headset became so quite, that you can only hear it in the very quite room, even on the loudest mode.

The phone shut itself down every one or two week and you have to unplug it from the power outlet for about 10 min and then plug it back, so it's start working again.

The speakerphone microphone is not sensitive enough, you can only use it within 2 feet from the base, otherwise other party will not hear you.

The buttons on the headset very hard and sometime is impossibleto press.

My friend also bought Panasonic phone (different model), guess what, it broke within one year too.

I have Panasonic TV, DVD player and microwave oven and they work just fine for a few years now.Based on my own experience and also reading other people reviews, I think Panasonic has a very big reliability problem with their phones and they should address this issue ASAP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone!!!!
In reading the reviews I thought I'd add my 2 cents since I've owned this phone for *at least* 5 years now with no problems. I got online to try and help a friend find a new 900 mhz phone so it won't interfere with her wi-fi. I looked up my phone to check the reviews and it sounds like if you get a good one you love it, a bad one it's not so good. My battery so far has been great though I'll probably need a new one pretty soon as the 4+ hr cont. talk time is now down to about 2ish and I can't leave it off the cradle overnight anymore and hold a charge.

However, I wonder if the problems aren't with the battery itself more than the phone. I say this because I also own another Panasonic cordless phone/answering machine and it has many of the same battery issues mentioned here. Overall though I'd say I'd buy this phone again in a heartbeat -- it's easy to use, the speaker on the handset is wonderful, especially when you get stuck on hold, and the range/features make for a very nice package. I've recommended this phone to others who love it as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars An average model
You get what you pay for. I wanted an inexpensive model with Caller ID and voicemail.
Most of the features are just fine. However, the handset is way too quiet and the battery life is just horrible. It would not let you talk for more than 40 minutes - needs recharging.
(I owe that model for over a year.)

1-0 out of 5 stars I Will Not Buy Panasonic Again
I bought Panasonic, because I thought that it was a reliable company that made good products.I chose a phone which I thought would last for at least a year, but I ended up having trouble with this one from the beginning.I contacted the company immediately to let them know that there were problems, but they refused the resolve the matter.I was so disappointed by their lack of response that I boxed up the phone up and ended up with a vtech instead.

I had a lot of problems shortly after purchase with static, with the phone cutting out, and with the range from the base that I was able to walk.It got worse, and pretty soon I had to stand next to the base to talk.Of course, that defeats the purpose of a cordless phone!

After many calls to the company, which only resulted in a run around, they told me to send the phone in at my expense and they would send me a refurbished phone for an additional $50.I told them at this point I was so disappointed in customer service that I just wanted a refund. The refused to give me a refund, and they refused to send me a label to return the product at their expense.I had paid almost $100 for the phone, and they wanted me to pay MORE money for a USED phone!

Having to pay $150 total plus double the shipping cost just to get a used phone that was "refurbished" was out of the question.I boxed the phone up and left it in my closet. It is still there, and I have avoided Panasonic products ever since.(I have, by the way, decided to purchase a vtech, which has never once given me problems.)I am very disappointed in the lack of customer service, the poor quality of the product, and the unwillingness of Panasonic to resolve this issue. It was a complete waste of my money, and I would not reccomend anyone buy Panasonic. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Phone is no good.
This phone is horrible, it does not provide all the services that is described.Buying it was a complete waste of my money.I do not recommend it. If there were zero stars, it would have gotton a (-10).

1-0 out of 5 stars AT&T:a name in history (nothing more)
Whatever happened to the AT&T I remember -- the engineering paragon that helped make the US the world's envy? It's apparently long gone, hopelessly withered to merely a marketing agency for horribly mismanufactured Chinese rubbish. This phone is an example. The most glaring flaw, obvious to anyone: the keypad is printed in light brown ("champagne" in BS ad-speak) on dark gray rubber. It's almost illegible when new, and the brown paint or ink is guaranteed to wear off in short order. How much more idiotic can it get? The LCD is also very low contrast with heavy shadowing -- it's virtually unusable, even with the pitiful backlight. Shame on the greedy fools and government lawyers who ran old AT&T into such a low ditch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Defective LED, Great Phone Book
I got this phone along with three additional handsets for Christmas and was very pleased with the simplicity of set-up and programming. In March one of the handset began losing some of its LED display on the screen. It is now April and the entire LED is completely blank. We have not done anything outside of its normal use to cause such a malfunction.I will try to contact the Manufacturer and see if they will replace this defective handset under Warranty or not.

Other than this flaw, the rest of the phone(s) work great. The speakerphone feature is excellent, and so is the clarity in the calls. My favorite part about these phones is that you only need to program a Phone Book entry into one handset and it automatically populates into any additional handsets you have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great phone for the price
I upgraded my old 900Mhz phone to this 2.4Ghz phone which has a bunch of features. The call quality isn't perfect, because there is a slight hiss constantly, but overall with the featuers I thought this was a great buy for the money (I got it very cheap after rebate).

The handset speakerphone is a must-have feature, and the way the other features work are more like a cell phone which has a good menu.

Overall, please with the phone. I wouldn't pay a lot of money for it, but if you pick it up cheap it's a great deal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biggest piece of junk ever
I've never come across such a shoddy piece of consumer electronics. This sad excuse for a phone has convinced me to NEVER buy ANY AT&T product again. How bad is it?Where to start!Horrible sound quality for starters.Standby time is pitiful. After less than eight months, one handset doesn't even work--it just makes a sizzling sound when it is taken off the hook.I'm going back to Panasonic--never had a problem with those! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Full featured phone
A real nice cordless phone.A good display with lots of easy to use features.I would have liked the display to be a little brighter but it still is way better than the vtech it's replacing. It's the little brother of the number one multi handset unit as rated by Consumer Reports. So far, the sound has been crystal clear on all calls.I really like the speakerphone in the handset.I also like getting messages via the handset. The digital AND analog clock in the handset display is great when you're out in the yard and forgot your watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone

1-0 out of 5 stars Thorougly confused
After reading the previous 8 reviews I am beginning to understand why I am experiencing problems. These reviews have helped me to become aware of many features available or needed to make this type of unit a more user friendly device.

The information re; being incompatible with DSL is true in my case also.I have requested support from atttelephoneproducts@aatphones.com.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with DSL
I like the features of this unit and would like it even better if it had all of features some other reviewers listed, like call sorting and adjustable LCD.Mine has neither of these features. But my real complaint is that when my DSL modem is plugged into the wall, my Caller Display 436 will not work.It works fine as long as the DSL is not plugged in.My phones with caller ID display work at all times.I like the fact that this unit came with a power supply rather than batteries. It would be nice to have a back up battery in case of power failute and a larger display would also be nice.Is anyone aware of other units which have no problem with the DSL line?

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk
This is supposed to display the caller information, and store up to 100 calls in memory. The display of the current call works, but after getting several calls in memory the characters change to display complete gibberish when looking back at the history. If you have a use for the call history, don't buy it because it doesn't work.

2-0 out of 5 stars NO Back Light!!
What a disappointment! After 5 years using a Pacific Bell caller ID box (CIDCO Model DB99), I had no idea that a caller ID box would come with no back lighting. We have to use a flashlight to see the display on our wall! (A lamp washes out the display.)The display is adjustable but, out of 5 settings, 1 is so light you can hardly see it and 4 and 5 have filled in black boxes around the numbers making them mostly unreadable.Only setting 3 is acceptable.
I ordered this from Advanced American Telecom (although the operator said it was "Telephone"). This number was given to me after I called SBC to get a replacement for our current box (fading display).
It was $19.95 and no Shipping over the phone (the operator told me that shipping was usually $8.00 but was a promotion ending in April), but I found it was $14.95 and $6.95 S&H on their website, www.telephones.att.com. Also, you do not receive a packing slip, the label on the outside of the box is required for your warranty (labeled so) and I can't get it off -- I have peeled and peeled it but looks like I am going to have to cut it off and keep it with the cardboard still stuck to it.

Make sure your model says it has adjustable backlighting or something to that effect. Now we have to order another caller ID box and hope for the best.

Our cordless phone has caller ID but you have to pick up the phone to see it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't See its Offspring
I recently purchased the AT&T 436 and it displays call made from land lines as it should. But calls made from AT&T wireless phones don't register, instead it displays "error present" or "line error".Strange, my other caller ID devices, including an AT&T wall phone, Bell South caller ID box and a Panasonic wireless phone all display both cell and land line numbers. What's even more interesting is this AT&T caller ID box is specifically rejecting calls from it's own AT&T family. Go figure! I returned it for a full refund. ... Read more
