3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable phone for a reasonable price
I've had this phone for almost 2 years. Works fine anywhere in my apartment, but part of that is probably good selection of the base location. Sound quality is excellent, battery life good. I get no interference from any one else or from other equipment, and I have at least 3 wireless networks in range of this phone. Even better, the phone doesn't interfere with them! A little funky to program and set up, but okay. Features that would be great to have: battery backed clock; easy access to ringer volume control. I wrote this review because I saw a lot of people slagging this phone and it didn't seem balanced because its worked okay for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice features....Flawed engineering
This phone comes in several flavors, silver and gold (1460) trim.
My experience is with the 1460. I had all the same problems that were already mentioned. The phone comes with many nice features, but the basic operation is inferior. Range issues with going through just one wall at 10 feet, constant background static, and your own voice is played back too loud and with static, through the ear piece. A similar problem low cost Uniden 2.4G experience.Note, this is not a true 2.4Gig phone, only the base transmits at 2.4GHz, the handset transmits at 900 MHz according to the owner's manual.I returned it and got a Motorola 362 in the same price range. Fewer features, but works well and good sound quality.

1-0 out of 5 stars AT&T 2.4gig 1455 phone
If it has an AT&T logo on it, don't get it. I have had this phone for about a year. I dealt with the static because this phone wasn't my main one. The problem I have with this phone now; the handset cannot connect with the base unit. I put a new battery in it, and followed everything the manual and what I could find on the web said to do and still it can't connect. Totally useless. I would return it but unfortunately I did not buy it at Target. I got it at the now closed Service Merchandise. This phone now sits in a pile of my other AT&T "goods?".

I do not recommend this phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Disappearing Caller ID and Garbled Messages
A co-worker purchased the same phone and had the same problem. The display on the caller ID is very faint, difficult to read, and often parts of the letters and numbers are missing. The sound quality on the messages is kind of muffled, and when you turn up the volume, that only makes it worse. We've seen these phones discounted down to $$, so you'd be crazy to pay full-price for this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Phone
This phone works well. I live in a large apartment complex and have never had problems with picking up other people's conversations or major static interference. The handset was somewhat awkward the first few times I used the phone; the ear piece is a little too flat and the curve of the back of the phone is not quite right. However, after a few uses, I grew accustomed to it and I am quite happy with this phone. The answering machine is easy to use and can store many messages. The answering machine remote access feature is also very convenient. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get what you pay for....
I bought this phone because I wanted a cordless phone with an answering machine (all 1 unit) for my kitchen, but I didn't want to spend very much.Well, with the answering machine, itis very difficult to understand the messages.I have to listen to them from the handset. And the clarity in the handset is awful! Not only is there an echo of my own voice in the earpiece, but it picks up every little sound from the room and amplifies it.It is also very difficult to hear the person on the other end.But what should I have expected from a $13 phone.(Of course it was $30 when I bought it.)I should have just waited and spent the extra money on a better phone as now I am on the search for a new better quality phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars liz
if you have friends who leave real long meassages on phones and you would like to avoid this this phone would be great it consistantly cuts people off after 5 or 8 words and the sound quality is pretty poor.the volume is usually so low and you can never tell how many message you have or erase a skipped messsage you have to hear all your annoying message first. I just bought this a couple of months ago and am now planning on replacing it.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's a fine phone, if you don't need your messages.
This is a typical, low-cost phone, and it works about how you'd expect. The signal doesn't carry strongly through 4 walls -- whatever.

The main problem is the ease with which you can erase the message you're about to listen to, when you mean to be erasing the one you've just heard. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works pretty well. Good for the price.
I have used it for quite a while. The answering machine works pretty well. With caller id and call waitingfeautres it's pretty good buy for a low price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lousy Sound Quality
I bought this phone 2 weeks ago at wallyworld...it has nice features and is pretty easy to figure out how to set it up, but the sound quality is terrible..sounds very fuzzy ...people i talk to say it sounds real good at their end...but at my end i couldnt make out what they were saying....needless to say...." back it goes "

2-0 out of 5 stars Its just ok
There is alot of background noise even when I switch channels. It would be ok for a back up phone if needed.I had a different Vtech phone for many years until I had to finally replace it.I should have got the same one.Don't waste your money, get a better grade of phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MINI-MACHINE
WHY I SAY THAT IT IS EXCELLENCT MINI-MACHINE? BECAUSE IT IS.
IT HAS ALL THE REQUIRED FEATURES...e.g. DIGITAL ANSWERING WITH 3 MAIL BOXES DEVICE, CALLER ID, ENOUGH CLEARITY IN VOICE AMONG THE 900 MHZ PHONES AND FOR THIS PRICE, EXCELLENT DESIGN, WALL MOUNTING, HANDS FREE OPTION WITH THE EAR PHONE...IN SHORT COOL PHONE.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre, but functional
I initially went to purchase an answering machine but when I went to a store this unit was the same price so i purchased this instead. The phone and the machine are very simple to use.But the quality of this item is pretty poor.It does what it's supposed to do, but the sound quality of both the machine and phone isn't wonderful. And the product itself just looks cheaply made. You basically get what you pay for in this instance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dependable and cheap
This is a great product, with all features a home phone user wishes. The price could not be matched even by Amazon, a must have corded phone, by the way, its the best corded phone i ve seen recently, the cordless handset is average voice quality but worth its price two times

5-0 out of 5 stars At&T phone review
Excellent features. Don't discount the corded feature. When the power goes out (like it does in Florida during hurricaines) you still get calls through the corded base.An all-cordless system leaves you stranded.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stopped working the 3rd Day
What a shame. I had such high hopes for this system as it was inexpensive compared to others (you get what you pay for). Ordered from Amazon.com and received promptly, but on the 3rd day both the base and handset unit stopped working!

If trying to make calls, it would not connect from either units. When callers called me, I could hear the ring, but not the caller! Yuck. Next time I'll pay more attention to reviews here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I used my cordless in my attic!!!! It has been wonderful in our household!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great phone.Don't listen to the naysayers...
I bought the black version of this phone about a year ago and I have to say that I'm extremely pleased with it.The corded unit looks so good it's practically a work of art and it's backlit LCD screen is by far the most clear/legible that I've ever seen. All of the buttons on both the cordless and base units are very responsive (no sticking or hard pressing) and the general feel of each phone is very solid. The cordless unit works pretty much flawlessly, but I do have to admit that the reception is not quite as clear as the corded base unit (very few corless phones are). It's still very clear and nothing even noticeable when you're using it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
The only problem I've had with this phone is the complaint listed most frequently among other user reviews - crap battery life.Reception's fine, no clicking, etc. on the ones I bought (got one for my girlfriend too), but the battery life is for total garbage.Talk more than ten minutes or so, and it goes dead.Leave it off the handset overnight, and it goes dead.A replacement battery costs more than the phone, and I don't think it matters - the batteries just plain suck.Someone wrote something about 300Amphs or something, so maybe that's something to look out for when buying a new phone, because you'll have to after this one drives you up the wall.I think electornics manufacturers are all engaged in a big conspiracy to sell new batteries at outrageous prices (there's no uniformity, so you're stuck with the maker's models).Give me some hunker phone that works on double AAs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont buy
I bought this phone and returned it the next day!the reception was terrible.Couldnt even hear the dial tone it was so full of static

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH a 1 Star Rating
This phone is pure garbage.Although there is a volume control on the receiver, it does not help at all.Mine has caller ID on the handset, reception is fine, so is the lack of static, but I have to strain to hear.STAY AWAY.I WILL NOT BUY VTECH AGAIN.I paid $25 for this phone, but it isn't worth $5.When I tried to take it back, without a receipt to Target, I was told I could only swap it for the EXACT SAME PHONE.NEEDLESS TO SAY THE 2ND PHONE IS JUST AS BAD AS THE FIRST ONE.I love shopping at Target, but I am stuck with this piece of junk!

1-0 out of 5 stars ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
pure static, all channels...... person on other end could barely hear me. don't waste your time or money.

1-0 out of 5 stars ugh...
DO NOT buy this phone... like most others here I have had nothing but trouble with the battery! After a few months, the battery on my first unit failed and wouldn't hold a charge so I got a new one... this one has the same problems! Sometimes the phone refuses to charge at all, and when it does I can talk for less than an hour before the phone beeps 'low battery' and shuts off.

It was the cheapest phone at Best Buy and now I know why... you get what you pay for! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Remote Access
I can't seem to check my messages reliably from a cell phone. It cuts off midway through.Even a land line has been a problem.A cheap machine, invest in something better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage - Deserves a Zero Rating
Record an announcement, but don't expect it to play clearly. Breaks, static, you name it. All the other reviews are correct.

A better product, and one that actually works, is the Panasonic KX-TM100B [ASIN: B00000J53X]. You'll save yourself a lot of grief by buying it instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Manual Addendum
To listen to your new messages, press the blue button. To listen to all your existing messages since time began, press and hold the blue button.... It only took me a month to figure that one out, I thought it was deleting the messages after I'd listened to them.

The machine also asks you to input the time stamp. It asks for the time, and the day of the month and the year. IT DOESN'T ASK FOR MONTH!

Sound quality on par with a tin can and string. Really does a number on pre-recorded messages from an automated service...

You can only delete messages you are currently listening to. You'd better hope that it wasn't just someone who hung up and it only lasted a split second...

Worthless garbage.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad machine
Everyone who has written in is correct. This is not a good machine. The first one I got did not work, so I figured it was a lemon. I exchanged it. The second one worked for a month or so and then lost its ability to play back complete messages remotely. It just cut out part way thru message, but message(s) was/were there when I got home. ATT has now sent me a third machine and it is set up. Figure I have a month to decide what to purchase next. I too would score it a "zero" if only I could.

1-0 out of 5 stars BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!
What the other folks have said so far is correct! However, here's some new downfalls of this machine nobody has seemed to mention yet:

"REPEAT" doesn't mean "Repeat". It means "GO TO PREVIOUS MESSAGE". ie. If you're listening to a message and someone is giving you their phone number and you missed a digit, you should be able to hit repeat and listen to the message again. NOPE! Instead it takes you back to the PREVIOUS Message that you don't need to hear again. In the manual, it says this will only happen if the message is giving the time/day stamp part of the message, but this is incorrect. IT HAPPENS ALWAYS! I called AT&T Customer Service on this issue and they could care less.

"TIME/DAY STAMP": You can't shut off. Every other feature on this machine you can turn on or off except this one. Most of the time, I could care less if they called at 10am or 2pm, I still need to return the call. Besides, most people end up saying what time they called anyway as habit. Why do I need to hear the time twice?

NO NUMBER OF MESSAGES DISPLAY: When you come home, they want to you to count the number of times the light blinks. If it blinks 9 times, I have 9 messages. That's exactly what I want to dowhen I come home from a hard day's work is count blinks on my answering machine every day. Darn it, if there's 5 new messages, just spell it out for me on a LCD display.

CALLER I.D. PHONE NUMBER ANNOUNCE: It could be a great feature. But I like to keep my number of rings on 2 before it answers. The problem is that then the machine won't read you the number calling. The manual is incorrect. It says that the number will be read no matter what, but that the rings would change to 3 to allow enough time to read the number. Again, this is incorrect.

I [didn't pay very much] . You get what you pay for! Shame on me!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't drop line properly after caller hangs up
The most serious problem is that it sometimes doesn't drop the phone
line properly after the caller hangs up.So the phone line is still
live, which, after a few seconds, leads to that annoying "If you'd
like to make a call, please hang up ..." message. No problem, I
manually unplug the phone line. But the answering machine still
thinks it's recording a message, so it's wedged. No way to switch it
off, play back the message recorded so far, nothing to do but to
power-cycle it (both the A/C adaptor and the battery). This, of
course, means the loss of all messages, including the last message,
which you never even got to hear. This is really bad.

Other problems are relatively minor: no date/time stamp; low 45s
limit on each message; and no selective erasure of messages (must
erase all or save all). The sound quality was okay, and there is a
way to skip through the messages, contrary to what another review
claimed.

The final problem is actually quite funny: the machine apparently
plays a local radio station continuously at low volume.I confirmed
that it is the source, as the playback stops when I power off the
machine.I found it quite entertaining, but it drove my
wife nuts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total POS
My mother bought this unit for my elderly aunt for her new apartment. Not only is the unit non-intuitive and feature poor (even for a 72- year-old schoolteacher), but it refused to work once the power was restored after Hurricane Isabel. I suspect that it could not handle even the most minor voltage surge when the power came back on. The unit was so new the box was still sitting on her kitchen table (luckily). I'm going to shop for an inexpensive unit from a manufacturer with a proven track record of reliable phone products (Panasonic - loved everthing I've ever owned of theirs).

I JUST FOUND THIS SAME MODEL FOR THE REGULAR PRICE OF 12.99 AT TARGET IN NY CITY AREA. GREEN ACRES SHOPPING MALL. 10 MILE OUTSIDE NY CITY NEAR JFK AIRPORT.

2-0 out of 5 stars Functional but not durable
I second the disposable answering machine description.Itworkedperfectly for two years; now it is dead. I had no problem with the remotecall function and thought it was a great value.Annoying things: it has nospeakerphone function and you can't skip listening to any messages-- youhave to listen to all of them.Don't buy this as a long-term appliance. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars kinda petered out after awhile
We really liked it at first, although the sound quality was never really good on the outgoing message or on the recorded messages. But we've only had it for a year now, and have to look at replacing at least the answering machine part. The recorded messages just started sounding quieter and quieter and now they are sometimes not audible at all.Ah, well, just after we bought it those audible caller id phones came out and I was kicking myself that we didn't have one of those, so here's my chance!:-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Not user friendly
This device is cumbersome and not easy to use.And if the power is out, basic phone functions do not work even though it's a corded phone.

You cannot set the volume control while listening to a message, it looses it's settings if there is a power glitch, even a small one.Very slow to respond to key functions.

I'll be purchasing another device or going to Verizon for vmail service. (God help me!)

1-0 out of 5 stars It just stopped.
After a couple of years of adequate service, the answering machine just stopped working. Perhaps it was jostled in the move, but who wants an answering machine that can't handle being bumped?

1-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be worse!
The title says it all.Wanted to pick '0 star' from the dropdown list, but it's not available, so I had to pick '1 star'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!
I'm very disappointed with this machine, it is a total piece of crap.Messages are so garbled I need to play them back 4-5 times and still can't understand them. The volume also wavers during playback. Most of my messages are cut off after a few seconds. Now it doesn't take messages at all.I gave it one star but it deserves much less than that.I would give it a negative 10 stars.
In summary, DO NOT BUY!

3-0 out of 5 stars Does not work (correctly) with DSL
With the DSL filter you can hear someone leaving a message but it doesn't actually register and record the message.Without the DSL filter it records the message but it's so garbled with interference that you can't understand it.I'll give it 3 stars despite these issues, because set up was easy and it works without DSL (as well as can be expected for a CHEAP product).

If you have DSL only buy this: 1-to screen calls when you're home (with filter on), 2-to set an outgoing only message, 3-for any sort of target practice, or 4-to dissect for a science project...

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
It's a waste of money! I bought one for a family member. I couldn't even understand the messages. Save your money and buy some other brand. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Inferior quailty
This phone is obviously a cheaply made product. It yet again proves that you usually get what you pay for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loud & Clear
Stumbled across this product as another VTech product was in the daily Gold Box offerings.I have had mine for well over one year now, and was surprised to see a few less than favorable reviews for this model.I have had absolutely no problems with mine here in Korea--and it shares the phone line with a DSL modem---and thus is filtered to allow data and voice--no problems at all with sound quality.Perhaps some with funny sound may want to try relocating the unit--that may help.Overall---for the price--I think you will be hard pressed to find a better value anywhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL!
This phone has horrible sound quality -- conversations are turned to "huh?", "what?"...after 8 months of wrangling with VTech, they finally sent me a 2468 model which is MUCH better sound quality. I wouldn't buy another 9161 if my life depended on it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible sound quality
All I can say is that the phone has horrible sound quality and it is annoying to talk on it.Lots of crackles and hissing.I would highly recommend NOT buying this phone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
The phone is simple to set up and use. The sound on it is good. The answering machine works great. I have had no problems with the phone yet. I'm especially glad that it was a Christmas gift. ... Read more
