2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of this machine...read on
Because this machine uses a microcassette, when it picks up a call, it will make plenty of noise to rewind and set the tape etc..

If I am sleeping, this machine has never failed to wake me up everytime with its loud analog gears.. even if I have the volume down all the way, even if I am in a different room and I have a door closed .Also if you turn the machine off, it is programmed to pick up the call after 15 rings.I thought nobody would ring me 15 times, but I was wrong.People did that and it woke me up every single time.

If this machine won't interfere with your sleeeping, it might be a good buy.The sound is very good on it (better than the digital machines).Functionally it is fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good deal
Inexpensive, but functional and it works great.Nothing fancy but it serves its purpose.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bargain Buy
You can't go wrong with this baby! It won't eat out your pocket and you will be glad you didn't go all out for the expensive stuff when you can have all the functionality for a lower price!! It's simple and reliable. Put your money to good use. That's my bid. Cheers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hello, Hello?Anyone there?
This is by far the worst answering machine I've tried. It will be returned as soon as I purchase a replacement. All the features work as advertised, but both the outgoing and incomming messages sound like they are shouted through a long, metal culvert.I'm lucky if I can understand 50% of the messages left for me.
I would give this zero stars, except that the minimum rating is "one star". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A bad thing brought to life
I've been extremely disappointed with this answering machine, for two main reasons.First, there is no way to retrieve an erased message. This is especially a problem because the system doesn't really pause after messages as you're playing them back.So after listening to a message you can't hit erase, or you will end up erasing the next (unheard) message. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. Second, the unit often clicks loudly when you pick up the phone, presumably because it's trying to get the caller ID.It's extremely annoying and also has interfered with dial-up connections I was trying to make on more than one occasion.Bottom line, I'd suggest you shop around for something built with real consumers in mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice machine, good price, but no protection from solicitors
As an answering device, this machine offers a lot of features
for an amazingly low price. The sound quality is good, it's
easy to use, and I especially like the informative lighted LCD
display.

I was hoping from the product description that this machine would
offer protection from solicitors, but that feature turned out to
be useless. The blocked-call feature literally handles only
calls identified as "blocked"; it's unable to handle or identify
(with its audible signal) calls identified as "anonymous" or
"unknown", which covers most solicitation calls. You cannot do
any other special call handling, such as a specific greeting,
with unknown calls.

This product is almost what I wanted.I hope they fix the
blocked-call "feature" in the next version. As an answering
machine, it's still better than any others I've tried.

2-0 out of 5 stars Would be nice except for intermittent caller-id problem
With configurable outgoing messages based on caller ID, this machine would be real nice (although you can't configure ring/message options for anonymous callers like you can on the Casio TA-140 & 145).Unfortunately the 29992 suffers from several intermittent flaws. For example, for about 25% of the calls it doesn't record any caller ID information (on the same calls, other caller-ID boxes in the house work just fine).I bought two different 29992 units for my relatives last Christmas and both units had the same intermittent flaws. There was no information in the box on how to contact Thomson Consumer Electronics to resolve these issues, so I sent them back and I bought them the Casio TA-140 from Amazon.com instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific answering machine
I bought this product over three months ago and I am returning to buy another for my mother.I am very impressed by the quality and great features of this product.

Two features made me buy this product. The first is that messages are saved in memory chips not on tape. On tape if you have consecutive messages they are difficult to delete without having to listen to the whole message. The second reason I bought this answering machine is that my area is subject to power outages and all voice recordings are saved in memory when the power goes out.

I read other reviews of this product on the sound quality of the recodings which almost dissuaded me from purchasing this product but I now feel they were misleading. For me, this was a significant improvement from my last answering machine and yes, the sound quality is superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Messaging System For Your Buck...
For the price I paid for this thing, it's well worth it. The sound on it is crisp and clear. Has a TON of features. Even when the power goes out, everything is saved when it comes back on with out a battery.

The Good: Great Sound Quality, Tons Of Features. Good remote options The Bad: Might Be A Little complicated for the new user and a lot of features you really don't need might interfere if you don't know how to set it up properly The Bottom Line: The best one I have owned. And for the price you really can't go wrong, you reallycan't.

Some stuff it has on it Caller ID with call waiting14 minutes of full-digital recording time with remote voice menu3-Line backlit caller ID display (99 name and number memory)50 programmable numbers for any of 5 custom responsesLight weight (0.8 pounds)

It truly is more than your basic answering machine. I would pick one up and toss the tape. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Average Caller ID box
Panasonic is a brand that usually means quality, leadership... and compatibility. Well, after I ordered the unit which matches my black phone perfectly, I discovered that the box does not show the name of the caller, only the number. I called my telco and verified that I had the caller ID + name service turned on and they advised that some caller ID boxes are not compatible with all telco equipment systems.

So, I like the design, the features, with the only exception that it does not support caller ID name. A small advice from me: call your telephone company and ask for them to recommend a brand for compatibility reasons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Caller ID for the Price
Buy it you will not regret it

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!
After having this box for 6 months, it shorted out causing my phone line to go dead. The phone company came and said there was no problem with the outside lines.I unplugged the box and the line immediately came back.Everytime I plugged it back in - dead line.I am now purchasing a different brand.Other than that, the product works fine except for 2 major negatives. First, I wanted a caller ID box that had an electric adaptor. I didn't want to have to constantly change batteries and have an outlet near by. It would've even been okay if the adaptor was optional - I would've purchased it separately. This unit only works on batteries. The product description did not mention this. There is no optional adapter and no space to insert one. Second, the product says call waiting/ caller id. The call waiting / caller ID does not work. I definitely have this service on my phone line, and the feature did work on my previously installed Southwestern Bell caller ID box. Pluses: large display is easy to read and its easy to delete call numbers that you don't want to save. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best cordless phone with answering machine I've ever had
We have tried many different cordless phones with answering machines and this is the best one we have had yet.It has a sleek design and great features. We wanted
a unit that included call waiting/caller id, one that displayed new messages in some fashion (this unit has a blinking light with how many new messages you have since the last retrival), and had volume control for the handset as well as incoming and outgoing messages.Initially we didn't think we needed the extra hand set, but are using it by a computer and it is great.Interferance problems with the TV and microwave in the kitchen (where we have the main unit) have been minimal, which was a big problem with other
cordless phone/answering machines we have had in the past. For the price, this is a great phone/acnswering machine combination!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and good
Sony's answering machine is a good cheap one. Using mailboxes is annoying since people wont press *(number), but it does its job, and that's what's important.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Little Machine
John H. Meyers' review pretty much says it all, so I won't go on and on here.I did want to correct another reviewer, however. The beep feature mentioned CAN be turned off completely following simple instructions in the manual.Perhaps the reviewer had a defective item, but I had no trouble at all turning off that beep (and I do agree it is pretty darn annoying if you leave it on!)This is a fine little answering machine at a good price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Message Beeping -- Annoying for Me
After receiving a message this machine beeps to let you know you have one that hasn't been listened to.However, there is no way to turn this feature off--even lowering the volume. You still hear the beep beep beep every 5-7 seconds. It's annoying if you're working or resting or sleeping and want to get the messages later -- and don't want to be "woken up" by the message beep for the message you just got.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surely worth [the money] but has some problems
PLUSes:

Records and plays back with good sound quality for the price.

Has fast/slow/repeat/skip play modes (but no pause).

Has 3 "mailboxes" if you need to take messages
for different people, personal vs. business, etc.;
the caller can specify which "mailbox" (s)he wants
by pressing "*" then "2" or "3" for mailbox 2 or 3
(otherwise by default it goes to mailbox 1),
which you have to explain in your one greeting message,
if you are going to use that feature.

Can take "voice memos" using local microphone.

Pretty simple to use.

Resists "hacking" of only a 2-digit remote access code
by hanging up on caller after three wrong attempts.

MINUSES:

Long and slow voice menu confirmations slow down operations
and can't be skipped; a minor issue if you get few
messages, but more problematic if you get many messages,
especially when you are dialing in from elsewhere
to retrieve messages. The "remote operation codes"
are also all at least two keys (e.g. "#" then "4"
to repeat a message). When you hang up after checking
messages remotely, the unit doesn't seem to recognize
that you've hung up; it goes on playing its very long
voice menu instructions for another minute, and thus
neither you nor anyone else can quickly call back.

It tends to record excessive "busy tones" after
a caller has hung up (see important next point below).

The worst problem is that when I call remotely
to listen to messages, it seems that the TAM-100
"listens" to its own playing of those recorded extra
"busy tones," concludes that *I* have hung up,
and then hangs up on me! -- and what's worse,
in this situation, many times it has also erased
my *greeting*message* when it's done this!
(certainly an engineering flaw there, I would say)

Sometimes it has also responded to other
digit tones recorded in the messages,
as if I had pressed them myself;
of course, these problems won't bother you
if you primarily check your messages at home,
rather than remotely by phone, but for those who
primarily phone their machine to get messages,
this tendency (especially when it hangs up on *you*
from hearing other *recorded* hangups, and then also
may delete your greeting message) could be annoying.

SUMMARY:

Now quite cheap

Good for casual, home use.

Has flaws if you dial in from elsewhere to get messages. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for an inexpensive replacement to your old answering machine, the Sony TAM-100 may your ideal choice. The TAM-100 stores messages digitally, meaning there are no tapes to erase or replace. It is sturdy, lightweight, and incredibly intuitive to set up and use. It features 15 minutes of recording capacity and three separate mailboxes to organize messages for you, your family, or your business.

The quick-start guide included made setting up and using the TAM-100 simple. We were able to hook up the unit, set the time and date, record an outgoing message, set a remote access code, and record a memo in less than 3 minutes.

There are two ways to leave messages on the TAM-100. Callers who wait until the end of the outgoing message will automatically be directed to mailbox 1. Friends, family, and business associates can press 1, 2, or 3 while the greeting message plays; this action selects a specific mailbox. The mailbox feature is terrific if you're tired of listening to other people's messages on your machine. Assign a mailbox to your kids, and you'll be plagued with only your own messages. Better yet, you can leave voice memos for your children in their answering machine mailboxes--instead of notes that could get lost.

Erasing your old messages couldn't be easier. To delete a message after you've listened to it, just press the Erase button. To get rid of all the old messages in a mailbox, press Erase and the appropriate mailbox button. The machine is foolproof and won't allow you to delete new messages accidentally. If you do try to delete them, the TAM-100 beeps five times and gently reminds you to play back all new messages.

You can also listen to your messages remotely by programming a convenient 2-digit access code. Simply call your machine, enter the security code, then 1, 2, or 3 for your mailbox. With the appropriate codes, you can even replay, skip, and delete messages when you're away from home--leaving more memory space for new callers.

The sound quality of the TAM-100 was not among the best we've heard. For some messages it was necessary to turn up the volume in order to make out the words. However, the machine makes volume control painless, and you can replay messages at your own speed by pressing the Quick or Slow button. --Megan Dugan ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Sony TAM100 - Good value for basic answering machine.
I've had this machine for over 3 years. The playback quality is fine contrary to some of the reviews I have seen here.

The main buttons are large and easy to press. The unit is small and sleek and looks nice.

For $29, it's a good answering machine.

3-0 out of 5 stars DecentMachine
I got an early digital answering machine from AT&T (when they really were built by AT&T) when they first came out. I think the Sony is the fifth one I have owned. Every machine I have bought since has gotten junkier. The last one my wife bought was a Conair (that's the one the store carried). That lasted less than a year.

So I did an search for Sony and bought this. The Sony quality is better than the last two I have owned. It was easy to program and the voice quality isn't any worse than the previous ones that I have had.

Digital answering machines are just junky now. This one seems OK.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly designed, poorly implemented
...The sound is horrible and the thing talks way too much, and much too slowly. It must take 3 seconds to tell me that my message has been deleted - EVERY time I delete a message.

The thing that REALLY irks me is that once you listen to a message, the counter decrements so that no one else knows that the message is on the machine.I have to write down messages for my wife to check the machine and vice-versa.

There have to be better/cheaper machines on the market.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great
I got this about a year ago, needing to loan my better
AT&T box to my inlaws.

This works "ok" for simply getting messages, when I'm in
the house.I don't like it for other things.

No battery backup.Settings lost with power outage, including
any set id for retrieving messages.Time lost. But outgoing
message, or saved messages appear ok.

I'm finally looking to replace it because I can't reliably
retrieve messages calling in.Either the id's wiped, the
id is "invalid" (even if it isn't), or the last time I tried
it didn't even recognize that I was using an id to say it
was incorrect.Very frustrating, only sometimes works.

Why can't anyone make a decent machine?I'm noticing very
unreliable machines in these reviews. My old one was
quite usable. This one is difficult, and requires the
manual to set anything... 8-{

1-0 out of 5 stars The most annoying answering machine ever
I bought this and used it for about 6 hours until I couldn't take it anymore.(Yes, I do have a low tolerance for a nuisance such as this.)It takes forever to checkor scan through messages because someone thought it would be cool to make a machine that talks to you.Ugh.

Get the Panasonic, it has a much more user-conscious design. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Jog control can't be beat
I have a number of caller ID systems in my home... some are included in the phone, some are supplemental equipment such as this one... this Sony model is my favorite.

There are no annoying beeps when you try to delete an entry. The jog control is a great tactile way to jump from previous to next in reviewing calls. You can select some of the numbers you've gotten calls from into a "VIP" list. With a touch of the button in the center of the jog control, you can call one of those numbers.

My only criticism is the inability of the unit to preserve your own area code selection. I live in one area code, but call a total of 3 area codes regularly... all of which are considered "local" calls that do not require a 1 or 0 to be dialed.

When setting up the unit, the dialog asks for your own number and assumes that all numbers not in your area code be preceded by a 1 by default. The "area/redial" button lets you select whether you use the 1, the area code or drop the area code entirely, but after selecting this info once, it needs to be selected again, each time you want to redial via the jog dial.

The unit should have the ability to enter a list of "local" area codes... most larger communities have multiple area codes that are considered to be local calls and the programmers should have remembered this when programming this device.

That aside, this is still one of the best caller ID units I've seen. I like the fact that it uses an AC adapter instead of relying on batteries.

The red "new call" light stays on solid and doesn't blink annoyingly... and since it's not battery operated, your unit won't be non functional from battery depletion from blinking all day long while you're away from the house.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great caller ID
Nice caller ID unit, easy to read.Would be nice if color was white of puddy.Unit is a little large.VIP call indicator is nice. Comes with AC adapter.Jog dial is nice touch. ... Read more
