1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't last long
I bought 4 phones for my small business. For the 1st 3 months, everything worked well except for the handset design. The handset easily slips off the cradle and if it not placed directly near your mouth when you are speaking, your voice is not heard by the customer. By about 3 months, one line of one phone stopped working. At this point, the hold buttons are intermittent. I would not buy this model again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable Display
Phone is unacceptable for wall mount because:

LCD is unreadable unless you bend down and shine a bright light on it.(I have good eyes by the way!)

Useless in dim light situations. No backlight on display.Font is tiny.
    Stay away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Noisy
After setting up this phone I used it to make a few calls.I immediately noticed a lot of backround noise whenever I used it.The noise was there whether making or receiving calls. When I switched back to my old phone on the same jack, the noise was gone.I'll be returning this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I only gave this phone one star because there is no "0 star" option.I bought this phone and within ONE WEEK it had deteriorated to the point where dialing required slow, hard pressing, and often still didn't register... sometimes it would pause/mute during the middle of a conversation and it randomly hung up on people.WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND A PHONE THAT LASTS!?!??! ... Amazon.com Product Description

GE's 29893 is sensibly designed in a classical corded form. It has a 10-number memory to quickly call up your most frequently dialed numbers. The speakerphone frees your hands for more important tasks, and the one-touch redial button is extremely convenient when you've just remembered something important to tell a friend after hanging up.

The 99-name-and-number caller ID memory tracks your missed calls, displayed on the three-line LCD. The built-in digital answering can store up to 10-minutes of messages without the use of tapes or other moving parts that can wear out. Access your messages when you are away from home with any of 10 remote functions at your disposal from any touch-tone phone.

Separate volume controls for the handset, speakerphone, and ringer let you customize the proper audio levels, and the phone is wall mountable to help save space. GE offers a one-year limited warranty. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Ripped off for TWO of these pieces of #$%#@!
Sadly, like others here, I've been screwed over by GE on this phone.

Worse than others though, we got two of them at once and BOTH don't work.

Symptoms: Like everyone else, after a period of time we found that it would stop recording a message after 5 - 10 seconds, leave no record that anyone called, and fail to keep the message even when the message was shorter than that window.

I work in technology so I did extensive troubleshooting on this and am confident that the problem simply is that both of these are defective.

Of course, it's been long enough that we don't have the receipts since it seemed to work at first.

    So: my advice:

    1. Don't buy this model of phone.
    2. Don't buy any phone from GE.

I hope someone from GE's phone division actually reads these reviews someday.Nice work guys, really. Sure, you got US$60 out of me and gave me nothing in return...you won that one. But, I'll be sure to steer clear of your stuff whenever I can from now on.

And now I'm off to scan the reviews to find something that's designed to actually work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice package, unfortunately one key thing missing...
    Style: nice
    Ease of use: excellent
flash memory keeps your setting is power goes out: neato
    Answering Machine: I DONT KNOW.

That is right. Like some other reviewers, my answering machine never worked.

I was looking for a corded answering machine and this one had the best look and options of the price range.Looked like a great buy. I picked it up and installed it, even reading the instructions despite the fact that I am male.

I got to the point where I called myself to test the answering machine and all it would do it pick up the line, then disconnect the caller and reset the date/time to default.

I called tech support on their non-free line (used cell minutes so no big deal).Standard line, "unplug it for 15 minutes and follow hook up instructions". NO GO!!!

I hate products that fail out of the box.I had such high hopes too, I really liked the look and functions.

UPDATE 05/20/05: Uniden Corded Answering with 5.8Ghz Powered Handset.
    - Flawless for about same price. Considering GE, Buy Uniden -

1-0 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE NO STARS!
This thing Blows! I bought it thinking it would be an inexpensive answerer.Only problem is, it DOES NOT ANSWER THE CALLS!
I returned it and got another, and the new one DID NOT ANSWER THE CALLS EITHER!
Lets review; Someone calls--------it DOES NOT ANSWER!
    This phone BLOWS!

1-0 out of 5 stars Would be perfect if only it's display was backlit! As is:bad
What were the designers thinking?I can only read the phone display if all lights are on.If the display was backlit this would be the perfect phone.Oh well.I'm returning it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This has been a disppointment from the first moment
The best thing about this phone is that it has broken 15 months after we bought it. Thank heavens! Now we can toss it out without guilt.

One of the big annoyances with this phone is that it's blinking lights aren't terribly logical. It has two, one to indicate that you got a call, and the other to indicate that you have a new message. But the "New Call" light is HUGE and blinks every time the phone rings, even if you answered it. It is as if the phone says, "Deal With Me!" Every single time it ever rings. It is annoying to have to press a button every time the phone has rung just to make it stop shouting at me.

A much smaller light blinks when there is a new message, and is just red to indicate the phone is on. Here I can understand a blinking light when you have a new message. Oddly enough, the light is smaller and less noticable than that New Call Light.

And did I mention that the caller ID mostly refuses to display who is calling? Sometimes on about the fourth ring it will flash the name of the person, but rarely before, and only sometimes. I am paying, what, $7 per month to the phone company for caller ID but the phone won't give up the information. It does, however, capture the name and number of the caller if I don't ever answer the phone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dependable and cheap
This is a great product, with all features a home phone user wishes. The price could not be matched even by Amazon, a must have corded phone, by the way, its the best corded phone i ve seen recently, the cordless handset is average voice quality but worth its price two times

5-0 out of 5 stars At&T phone review
Excellent features. Don't discount the corded feature. When the power goes out (like it does in Florida during hurricaines) you still get calls through the corded base.An all-cordless system leaves you stranded.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stopped working the 3rd Day
What a shame. I had such high hopes for this system as it was inexpensive compared to others (you get what you pay for). Ordered from Amazon.com and received promptly, but on the 3rd day both the base and handset unit stopped working!

If trying to make calls, it would not connect from either units. When callers called me, I could hear the ring, but not the caller! Yuck. Next time I'll pay more attention to reviews here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I used my cordless in my attic!!!! It has been wonderful in our household!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great phone.Don't listen to the naysayers...
I bought the black version of this phone about a year ago and I have to say that I'm extremely pleased with it.The corded unit looks so good it's practically a work of art and it's backlit LCD screen is by far the most clear/legible that I've ever seen. All of the buttons on both the cordless and base units are very responsive (no sticking or hard pressing) and the general feel of each phone is very solid. The cordless unit works pretty much flawlessly, but I do have to admit that the reception is not quite as clear as the corded base unit (very few corless phones are). It's still very clear and nothing even noticeable when you're using it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Features, Message Quality is So-So

The features are great: several volume levels each for ringer, handset volume, speakerphone, and message playback. It has a talking caller ID (even though there is no LCD to display caller ID information). The batteries allow use without power, the speakerphone sounds good to me, and you can listen to your messages privately through the handset.

The answering machine does have a cheap digital quality to it. Even the factory pre-recorded announcement sounds slightly garbled through the handset.

Also, I found the handset sound quality to have a slight, high-frequency buzz around sounds. When you turn up the volume on the handset, the sound becomes more distorted, as well as loud.

The appearance is solid and businesslike, and feels well-made to me.The manufacturer is Advanced American Telephones of Hong Kong. They are owned by VTech and have made ATT brand phones since 2000.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this product
I have owned this phone for several years, and have never had a problem with it.I love the voice announce caller ID feature. It has saved a lot of jumping and running for the phone, especially in the evening when I don't feel like getting up to look at a readout to see who's calling. The answering machine works very well, and has plenty of room for my needs.Overall, this has been a very good product and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and short-lived
When we purchased the phone in March, 2003, we read a very positive review of it. It did not live up to the review, but others have expressed some problems quite clearly. Other problems with ours were:

It lost the time and had to be reset regularly; itlost the recorded voice message on the answering device, even with a battery back-up. The ring could be made shriekingly loud, but the caller's volume increased very little.

It also worked for only a year and a half.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this machine
Just adding my voice to the others here. I've had much the same problems:

    - As others have already noted, the sound quality of the recording is terrible. I often have to replay a message 4 or 5 times to understand it.

    - Just a few months after I bought it, when I picked up the receiver to answer a call, I sometimes had to jiggle the switch hook to get it to answer. Then it started cutting people off right in the middle of a conversation. Now it's so bad that when you pick it up you can jiggle all you want and it doesn't answer at all. I've given up using this piece of junk as a phone - I just use it as an answering machine.

    - Now the last straw is that I can't retrieve my messages remotely. I dial my number, it answers on the 2nd ring like it's supposed to, I key in my code, and it just sits there and does nothing, and then hangs up! I've gone through the setup several times, and I'm sure it's set up correctly. But I can't retrieve my messages!

Don't waste your money on this piece of junk! If anyone knows of a better machine... please post it here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its an answering machine..not an MP3 player!
I've had this unit for 5 months and have had no complaints. Its a good little basic machine that gives you your messages when you are away. The battery backup feature is great. This unit was one of the few machines that were working for me in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel.

Yes, the sound quality is not top notch; but who needs concert clarity on an answering machine? I guess if your friends mumble...

I also like being able to set the rings at a reasonable 5 or 6 before the answering machine kicks in--plenty of time to race to the phone if you are anywhere in the vicinity. Color me satisfied. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What has happened to telephones recently?
So corded phones have now joined the ranks of junk "consumable" electronics along with hair driers and toaster ovens? In my search for a decent 2 line corded phone with caller ID, I purchased and with great disappointment returned 2 AT&T models (once the gold standard of all phones!)and finally, several months into the process, exhausted and desparate, settled on this Panasonic. Unlike the AT&Ts, all of the features work, but there is no mute, no reserve power supply (for shame!)and the LED screen is impossible to read from any angle except from directly above. I do not recommend this or any other two line phone. The situation is pathetic! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great machine!
I really like this caller ID unit.I didn't give it 5 stars because of it's large bulky size and for the fact that it states speakerphone but is not.It does pick up an outside line, dial the number listed on the ID then you are prompted to pick up your receiver. It is easy to use and easy to read. ...
