kinda petered out after awhile
We really liked it at first, although the sound quality was never really good on the outgoing message or on the recorded messages.But we've only had it for a year now, and have to look at replacing at least the answering machine part.The recorded messages just started sounding quieter and quieter and now they are sometimes not audible at all.Ah, well, just after we bought it those audible caller id phones came out and I was kicking myself that we didn't have one of those, so here's my chance!:-)

This device is cumbersome and not easy to use.And if the power is out, basic phone functions do not work even though it's a corded phone.

You cannot set the volume control while listening to a message, it looses it's settings if there is a power glitch, even a small one.Very slow to respond to key functions.

I'll be purchasing another device or going to Verizon for vmail service. (God help me!)

not a good phone, terrible service by GE
I purchased the phone and had it break within 30 days. When I sent the phone back in for repair/replacement it was returned as undeliverable. When I found the GE web site for comsumer electronic it said it was under construction.

Don't buy this phone and think hard about buying a GE phone
I purchased this phone in November, it stopped working in January. I packaged up the phone and shipped it back for repair according to the instructions at my own expense. Audio is not good and it's hard to program
I've had a LOT of phone machines and this one is OK, but the audio is really marginal. It's also a bear to program. I always have to find the manual to do the simplest things. It also loses the time - can't they keep the clock alive from phone line power in case you get a glitch in the power line ? I guess not....

You can do better than buy this thing.

Useless
My less than a year old AT&T 1817 has earned my complete mistrust. Some important messages became mysteriously inaccessible on it while I was making arrangements to have some major surgery. More have disappeared since.

I will replace this ...as soon as I can find a reliable answering machine.

Save your money for an appliance that will do the job.

Just OK
I experience a good deal of static while using the telephone.Plus, even with the volume all the way up, I miss parts of the message unless the person leaving the message talks loudly enough so the machine records all of it.

Just a little sticky
The only problem I had with the phone was the sticking of the #4 but after playing with it the #4 works fine now.All the other features work great.Since this phone is used in my office, I would recommend it to anyone for the home or the office.

The price of the phone is unbeatable.

Every so often, I would actually remember to return a call, ask a question, or just say "Hi, I'm thinking about you" to my stepdaughter Gina.Distance does not really make the heart grow fonder sometimes it simply distances us from our loved ones.One day, after trying to reach her on ten different occasions I had this answering machine shipped to her as a gift.

This changed her thoughts from "You never return my calls" to "Hi.You called!"

The device is simple, easy to install, and does not require the plethora of tapes that older systems did.You do have to record your own greeting unless you mind the digital mechanical voice.It is not a bad voice, particularly if you like the futuristic machines R2D2 and C3PO (Star Wars androids).

I have noticed that some of the reviewers for this particular machine did not have quite the success that I have had.Unfortunately in manufacturing there are times when a lemon squeezes through quality control, but they can be returned.However, Gina received her gift at the end of February, and loves it.She has never had a problem.She knows the day and time a call came through, has programmed the nine number memory module for speed dial, and, since we live in the land of rolling blackouts -- California, has used the Message Guard feature.

This answering machine can also be used to avoid unwanted calls, because you hear what the caller is saying.Personally, I hate to pick up the phone and have a digital direct marketing service determined to sell me some product that I absolutely have to have even though I did not know about it before they called.These are the calls that are happily limited to no more than four-minutes, along with all others.I have discovered that 240 seconds is enough for any friend to leave their name, number, and a brief message.This also means that if I by some horrible quirk of fate I get 59 messages, I can just pull the plug and delete the entire data base . . . then "embarrassingly" state that my answering machine lost calls.Who has not wanted to do that?

You can feel as if your are riding Pegasus through the sky, and when you return to earth you can decide which calls you want to return.

Was OK for a while
While initially happy with this product, after about 18 months, the illuminated display became dim, making it very hard to see at night (which was the point of buying this). The LCD worked OK. Warranty is only for a year, so I'm out of luck. When I find something else with similar capabilities, I'll be buying that and putting this in my growing collection of old phones.

Not a reliable alarm clock
I agree with the other reviewer who said the time "gets stuck".In one night, the clock became 45 mintues slow, causing me to wake up too late to catch my train.The time was accurate when I went to bed 7 hours earlier.While it is stuck, I noticed the colon in the time display blinks extremely slowly, and none of the buttons would respond.That is, I could not set an alarm, view the calls on the ID, or fix the time.I had to unplug it and quickly plug it back in to get it "unstuck".This has happened to me on several occasions while I've owned this phone this past year, but never has it caused me to be this late before.I'm going to write to GE to see if I can get some compensation.

I also agree about the flashing caller ID light.It is very bright.I saw the reflection of it on my ceiling, and I kept trying to close my blinds.I couldn't figure out where it was coming from!It was so annoying!

As a phone with caller ID, it works just as it should.Just don't count on this to wake you up or display accurate time.

could be better
I've had this phone/clock for about a year.While I like the compact design, the actual performance left something to be desired.The clock sometimes "gets stuck" after the alarm goes off and then the clock time is off by several minutes.I had to double check the time every night before I went to bed to make sure the time was correct.The display is too bright for a night stand, even on the low light setting.The caller id indicator flashes if you don't review the new calls.It is very annoying to have a light flashing when you are tryijng to go to sleep.I had to put tape over it...Last but not least, the alarm sound was not pleasant to wake up to.I bought a new cd/clock radio that I am very happy with and I am going to get simple phone with no flahing lights. I would not recommend this product if you like to sleep in a dark room.

GE Model 29292
There's really only one problem with this phone but it is a big one. When you set the alarm time it is very easy to mess up the current time. Every other time I set up a new alarm time the current time messes up and the alarm ends up going off an hour early or an hour later than I expect it to (this occurs despite the fact that I am aware of the problem and very careful when I set the times). The phone does have 2 alarms and if you are going to set the alarms once and then never adjust them it would be a fine phone. For me, this is not the case and I am in the proceess of finding a replacement for it.

This phone has it all.
I purchased this telephone because I wanted a caller id phone with a backlit display.This phone has this option and much more.The clock/caller id display is large.One has the option of turning the backlit display (the actual lighting up) on or off.The contrast can be easily adjusted.It's not a difficult phone to set up.The caller id displays the name above the time and the phone number below the time.The date the caller called is diplayed to the right of the time.There is a flashing light for new calls.If you want to call someone on your caller id list you bring up the number from the review option and press the "dial" button.

The time display is easy to read and the current date displays always to the right of the time. It has the dual alarm feature.

The handset has an adjustable volume control. The ringer also has high/low/off options.

The alarm has a music or buzzer option.The music option is very amusing.Neither option is irritating.

I would recommend this phone to not only those who want an alarm clock/phone but also to those who want a nice caller id phone (the clock is a nice extra)! ... Read more
