Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's KX-TG5240M utilizes the 5.8 GHz band and digital frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology for increased call security and range and for less interference. This system comes with one handset but can accommodate up to three more (for a total of four). Compatible with Caller ID/call waiting, the KX-TG5240M offers a 50-station caller ID memory and dialer, accessible through the handset's three-line backlit LCD. It also features talking caller ID, which audibly announces who's calling through the handset and base speakerphones. Rounding out the main features are an integrated digital answering system and a light-up antenna on the handset that flashes to alert you to new calls and messages. The handsets also offer a variety of ring tones and melodies to choose from.

The KX-TG5240M allows you to pre-program frequently called numbers, even for chain dialing (ideal for calling automated systems that require a series of numeric inputs). It's also Caller IQ compatible, a service provides updates on weather, sports, horoscopes, and more; the information is sent directly to your telephone and displayed on the handset screen. (Caller ID and call waiting require subscription through your phone company. Caller IQ is a fee based service that requires registration.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A good phone, not a great one
I bought the 5240 for my business and was happy with it right away.Since it's important for me to have my hands free while talking, I use a Panasonic headset (a cheapie). The voice quality is fine, and when I use the Voice Enhancement feature it's even better.I also have a wireless network (running at 2.8 GHz) and have run into no problems with the two frequencies running so close together.I'm able to walk well away from the base with no cut out problems, either.Talking Caller ID is cool, but not too useful. The handset by itself isn't too comfortable, but it's fine.

The main problem I've had is with the display on the handset.Suddenly, they became so dim I couldn't read them - but only on some of the menus. This became a little worse over the next week or so, so I exchanged. After looking at what was available, I exchanged it for another 5240 since I liked the first one so well.I ran into another display problem almost immediately with this one, but it wasn't bad enough to exchange.Six months later, I still have it and am living with the problem. When compared to sound quality, ease of use, and range, this is a minor problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe they fixed it?
I read the other reviews for this and many of them complained that the person at the other end would hear your voice garbled or distorted if you got too close to the base unit.We just bought a KX-TG5243M (same as the 5240 but it comes packaged with 3 handsets) on May 27, 2005, and it does not have that problem.I have even held the handset with the antenna literally touching the base unit antenna, and the person I was talking to could hear me clearly. So I guess either the problem did not exist on every unit, or Panasonic has fixed it.
Other than that, the phone has everything we want, including some features that were sorely missing on our old Uniden TRU-5885:On it you could not have a conference call with both handsets - only with a handset and the speakerphone in the base unit. And every time the power went out I had to get the manual out to find out how to set the clock again, despite the fact that every time a call came in the Caller ID showed the CORRECT time.Panasonic has managed to make their phone smart enough to use the caller ID info to update its clock automatically.

5-0 out of 5 stars About 3 months and problem free
I have had this system with one extension phone for about 3 months now and have had no problems with it. Great sound quality, no glitches in performance or operation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Loved the features, hated the sound quality
I bought this unit because of other reviews I had read concerning wireless connections and cordless phones.Well, they were wrong. The extra handset was in the room with our wireless router for our computers. You had to leave the room to get a phone call. There was nothing but static on the phone.

The base unit had some problems too with sound. It would screech and whistle about 15-20 seconds into a call, and that was standing right in front of the base.

I really did like some of the features like the speaker phone/intercom.All the whistles and bells aren't worth anything if the phone doesn't work.I took this back and got an AT & T E5960.So far we are satisfied with that one.

4-0 out of 5 stars One other feature is missing
My old Panasonic answering machine had the ability to call a pre-programmed number to notify that there is a message. They call it 'to page', but since the pagers have long gone - it just calls my cell phone and hangs up. That is the feature that I will miss a lot!

Also, I don't see it offered at Amazon, but Panasonic also has model KX-TG5243: same as this one but with three handsets. If you are planning to buy this and a handset - 5243 combination is cheaper ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Low quality phone with a big price tag
Less than 8 months after I purchased this phone, all of the number buttons stopped working and I already had to purchase a new battery.Luckily, the one year warranty was still in effect so I was able to return it to the company and they sent me a new one.We had the new one for about 4 months when all of the number buttons stopped working on it and the battery needed replaced once again!!!!This was a very expensive phone and the quality is terrible.Because of this experience, I will never purchase another motorola phone again, and I will advise others against purchasing motorola products.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuk. Bad battery, buttons stopped after few months.
I bought 3 of these phones, within a few months all of them had battery life issues and the buttons on 2 phones don't work anymore.

Bad motorola, bad!

1-0 out of 5 stars Keypad doesn't work!
I have two of these phones and both started to have trouble with one number--eventually the whole keypad goes out.I have heard of others having the same problem.Motorola was no help--told me to clean the keypad. They obviously know it is a consistent problem and flawed phone.DO NOT BUY!

5-0 out of 5 stars They must abuse their phonesbecause mine is great
I've owned my phone for over a year and have two of them and have had no trouble with them. They are solid and reliable and better than most phones I've had including panasonic. Maybe the other people toss them on the floor all of the time or take showers with them, I'm not sure? I would buy them again in a second but fortunately I won't have to since they have never given me any problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PHONE
Ditto the reviews below. The "on" button on the handset is not working so the only way to answer the phone is by pushing the "speakerphone" button. To my disgust, Motorola tells me that since the phone is no longer under warranty they will not replace it and - believe it or not - there is no authorized service center that can repair it.In other words, if it breaks the only option is to send it to the landfill.UNBELIEVABLE! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good.
This is the third cordless phone I have bought in a month. The first, a Motorola, had terrible echoes and sound. That one went back. The second, a GE, was fine, for the first three weeks. Then the answering machine shut down erasing all the messages every time I put the phone in the cradle. That one went back. I've only had the Panasonic a couple of days, cut so far so good. The sound is decent, though I would like the handset to be a little louder. But everything else works and I have to admit, the talking caller ID is pretty cool. Hopefully this one will keep working.
Update: A week later and still working. I just wanted to add, however, despite what the Amazon site says, this only has one handset and is not expandable.
One more cool feature I have found. You can subscribe to the Caller IQ serivce to get weather and other things on the phone. This is OK, but the best part is you can use the web site to import your Outlook contacts. Then you can check the ones you want on your phone and they are automatically downloaded to the address book in the phone. Saves lots of work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
I have had this phone now about 3 months and I am VERY HAPPY with it. IT has all the things and want and many more, The hand sets are very clear and I love the fact I can check voice mail on any hand set that goes with it I do not have to run to the main answering machine to check the voice mail. The range of the hand sets is great had no problem at all with this.So far I love everything with this phone, It is much better than either of the last two phone I have had.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good phone, with some funky features...
I bought this phone (plus an additional handset) to replace my old Sony 2.4GHz phone. The old phone interfered with my home WiFi network. This new phone, although it is a dual-mode phone, claims not to interfere and so far that has been the case for me.

There are a number of nice features on this phone. Both the handsets and the base station have built-in speaker phones. The answering machine is easy to program. The handsets are easy to set up with the base station (a near impossibility with my old Sonys). The phones are reasonably stylish in a utilitarian sort of way and have enough heft that you won't mind using them.

The phones and base station have LCD displays for programming. The phone has a color display and you can choose "wallpaper" for it (right...). The spare handset I bought was only black and white (I could have chosen another color handset). By default it shows a smiley face. The ringers are a bit cloying (you can set them to play music or choose from several obnoxious ring styles). Here's the digital revolution turning something simple into a needlessly complex toy.

If you ignore all the stupid bells and whistles, though, the phone does everything I ask of it. It was very easy to setup and it works well. Other brands aren't that much better in terms of "silly quotient" and don't offer the range of useful features. I would give this phone 3 1/2 stars if I could, but it's pretty good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware... it's another dual-band device
This one looked so good, so I went to Circuit City yesterday to take a look.Right on the box, it brags about using 5.8 GHz AND 2.4 GHz to provide the best performance.Seems that all the so-called 5.8 GHz devices built by V-tech, including those V-tech builds for other companies like AT&T, are dual band.Beware, if you are worried about interference to your computer wireless network. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You won't get it 'til you get it
My friend found out about this videophone, bought FOUR of them for his family and then hounded me endlessly to get one. It's easy to think you know how a videophone might work and imagine it's somewhat like using a webcam, but really you have no idea until you see what it's like to press one button and see someone right on that screen.
For those of you out there who hate the thought of having to get dressed and be all presentable to answer the phone, you can just turn off the screen and use it like a normal phone until you get your pants on :)
Speaking of which, imagine what this product will do for couples in long-distance relationships, never mind the grandparents and family scattered around the world who you can now see in real-time! And you can talk ALL DAY for free.
I can't stress enough the insane coolness of Motorola's OJO.

5-0 out of 5 stars No computer needed for OJO !
My mother is 79, lives in NJ. I got her a Motorola OJO, and my brother in AZ got one. My mother burst into tears 1st time she saw the grand girls in 2 1/2 years. So life like, almost like being there, she could "almost touch them". So much better than a phone call, so cool. They OJO each other alot in the few weeks they had them. Excellent quality, picture like the TV, very life like. Nice speaker and nice features. Easy to use, no computer. I highly recommend it, price should come down if the cable companies start to offer it. 5 STARS *****

3-0 out of 5 stars Good clarity/reception -- but too SMALL!
I've been using these phones for about three months now -- and the only problem I've had with them is the one I noticed right away -- they are TOO SMALL!
They're about the size of your average "candy-bar" (non-flip) cell phone. And that's handy if you want to carry it around the house in your pocket, but a pain in the (...)if you're trying to talk on it while doing something else.
If I try to hold the phone in the crook of my shoulder while I'm doing something -- the microphone part at the bottom gets jammed up against my chin and the person on the other end can't hear me.(I know this because I've been on both ends of this conversation attempt)

And if I try to put it in the crook of my neck while I'm on hold, I very often hit the "end" button and hang up the call.

It's a PAIN!

Also, the buttons are REALLY SMALL -- and half the time I end up pushing the wrong buttons when I'm dialing!

And I'm no oaf, here, kids -- I'm a regular-sized woman.

The phone itself WORKS GREAT -- so if you have tiny fingers and are okay with always using the speakerphone -- I'm sure it'd be great for you.But if you're looking for something a little more "traditional" for your home-phone -- I'd say look on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent System
I purchased Dual Handset package along with an addtional 2 handsets for a total of four cordless phones.

All are being used in a VERY LARGE 1850's Victorian home and there is no distortion or lack of signal anywhere in the house.

The intercom feature is VERY useful as well as the ability to synchronize the phone book on one phone with every other phone in the system.

After using several different cordless phones I find the Uniden's the best I've ever used.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

ME

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
You get a lot for your money with this (or these) phones.First of all, it's a 2.4 GHz Digital phone, which means you don't have to worry about people intercepting your phone call.It also looks nice.

The phone is a bit small, but feels good on the ears.It has the standard features like Caller ID, speed dialing, lots of different rings to choose from, and a memory bank for 100 names and numbers.

But what I like about it is that it sounds clear both to me and the other party.I like that there is an extra phone which doesn't need a separate phone jack.I like the orange glow on the keypad and Caller ID screen.I like option of having the phone answer when you pick it from the cradle.I liked the price for what I was getting.Plus you can add 2 more phones if you have a big family. Also, there is a battery indicator which indicates when you need to charge it.

There are a few minor cons like the size of the keypad. The buttons are a bit small. The owners manual says the battery will last about a year with normal use. That's not very long, in my view.

In summary, I believe there is good value in this phone

In summary, this 2.4 GHz digital cordless phone provides great value and security for your whole family.

4-0 out of 5 stars So Many Functions!
After reading the very helpful reviews online I decided to purchase this phone. I did hear the tinny sound described but it's not that bothersome. The phone works exactly like a baby monitor if you want it to-it is awesome. It has fun ring tones and lots of features. We do not have caller ID so I can't use all the functions but that's ok. It is a great multi phone for the price.I like how the display and keypad light up too. The speaker is also great if you need to set the phone down to talk or wear it. I never write reviews but I felt I needed to share this one. Buy it today!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons

I have this thing here are the plusses and minuses:

Pro
---
Pretty clear sound

speakerphone on handsets

Easy to read lightup display

headset friendly

some nice phonebook features where you can copy phonebooks between handsets

you can pick up answering machine messages from handset

new message indicators on handsets

intercom function is handy in a large house

includes a sort of walkie talkie feature in addition to intercom

takes a total of 4 handsets, extras are $30-40 each.

no wire needed for handset. Only base station needs a phone wire.

handsets come with charger

If you use the musical ringers the phones will not ring on the first ring. This is a "pro" for me because I have a computer that hangs up on certain caller-id numbers/strings but only after the first ring.

Don't seem to interfere with 802.11G WiFi

Cons
----
baby monitor function is no substiture for a real baby monitor. You can only use it on battery at the receiver and it makes a load "shirp" at the receiver when activated potentiallywaking up the baby. The battery will not last the night in baby monitor mode so it's only good for daytime naps and such. I sometimes use it at night and have to switch handsets at around 3:00Am when it complains about low battery. This is unfortunate because it is much clearer than my existing baby monitor.

small handsets, hard to rest on shoulder

no way to adjust ringer on intercom/baby monitor it's loud! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 10+ Stars! Superb Expandable Cordless Phone System
Awesome phone! Let me first say that within this past year my husband and I bought every expandable and non expandable phone available. Yes we tried them all from Uniden to Motorolla to Vtech and this one blows them all out of the water!

Pro's
1. Very user friendly. I am not the type of person to read instructions and with this phone I didn't need to.

2. 5.8 GHz is awesome! I live in a large apartment and I can walk all the way down to my laundry room (about 100 yards away) and still have a crystal clear connection!

3. Phonebook holds up to 50 numbers plus the phonebook is transferable meaning you only have to program one phone and then you can send it to the other 2 handsets.

4. Great speaker phone. Loud and very clear.

5. Light-up indicator to let you know if you have a call coming in, a good feature if you have sleeping babes or loved ones who wake up when the phone rings and you constantly turn your ringer off. Also lets you know if you have a voicemail waiting.

6. Backlight is bright orange and makes the screen easy to read.

7. Great ringtones. You can download ringtones to this phone if you wish, but I choose not to.

8. You can assign different ringtones to different people in your phonebook and also different colors for the light-up indicator to different people. This way you know who is calling without having to run to the phone, whether the ringer is on or off.

9. Great battery life. I left my phone off the charger for 2 days once and still had battery life. I use a phone constantly throughout the day and this phone holds up better than any phone I have ever owned.

10. Very attractive and the perfect size. All of the other phones I owned were either to big and bulky or so small and flimsy.

11. Did I mention that this phone has crystal clear reception and is so easy to use!!

Con's
1. I was told that if you download a song to this phone, you can only download one song to one phone, so you would have to download up to 3 times to get one song on all your phones. Not a big deal to me cause I don't really care to download songs to my phone.

2. 3 handsets was a bit much even for my large 1200 sqft apartment. The store didn't have a 2 handset version though I do think Panasonic makes one. Not really a con nor Panasonics fault for that either.

That's about it for the con's. Not too many at all huh! This really is a great phone. It may not have the best ringtones or the coolest downloadable features like some phones do, but it has what is really important and then some. ... Read more

52. Panasonic KXTG4000B 2.4 GHz DSS 4-Line Cordless Phone with Caller ID and Voicemail

Amazon.com Product Description

Give your small business or home the productivity-enhancing features of a business telephone system without the high price tag. The KX-TG4000B four-line cordless telephone system accommodates up to eight handsets, while the all-digital voice mail system with auto attendant can be occupied by up to four users simultaneously. And dual caller ID with call waiting lets you see who's calling on either line.

The KX-TG4000B base unit and each cordless handset communicate in both directions using 2.4 GHz frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) transmission. FHSS technology improves calling range and clarity, and eliminates crosstalk. Because it rapidly changes transmission frequencies within the 2.4 GHz bandwidth, this cordless system helps reduce the possibility of eavesdropping.

The KX-TG4000B operates via cordless transmissions, so no expensive (and messy) wiring or installation is required. Simply hook up the base to your phone lines and plug it into an AC outlet. Then, set up the included KX-TGA400B handset in the desired location and plug in the recharging stand. Up to seven more optional KX-TGA400B handsets can be added to the system.

The convenient, reliable, all-digital voice mail includes many advanced features. The KX-TG4000B offers a general delivery mailbox on the base unit, plus up to eight personal mailboxes--one for each handset. Each user can record a personal greeting, and can access individual mailboxes from any system handset or an outside line. You can set the voice mail system to automatically answer all incoming calls with a recorded greeting, and to route callers to a desired extension or mailbox. The KX-TG4000B allows for four separate voice paths, so four system users can access voice mail at once.

This phone system also includes a digital duplex speakerphone with an eight-step volume control. Digital circuitry in the base unit helps reduce echo and the dropout effect for more natural-sounding conversations.

Dual caller ID with call waiting lets you view the name and number of all incoming callers on either the base unit or handset LCD--even if you're already on the line. This caller ID feature also stores up to 50 names on the base unit (up to 30 names on each handset), with direct callback capability. And thanks to caller ID pager call, you can even program the phone to notify your pager when you've received an incoming call, and to forward caller ID data to your pager's display. (Subscription to caller ID services is required.)

Other features includetwo-way intercom/paging, lighted handset keypad, headset jack in the handset, and a belt clip. The handset offers up to eight hours of talk time and up to 96 hours of standby battery life. ... Read more

Features

  • 2-way intercom/paging, lighted handset keypad, headset jack
  • 2.4 GHz digital spread spectrum operation
  • Supports 4 lines; expands to 8 handsets
  • Caller ID/call waiting with 50-call history on base, 30 on handset
  • 100-minute voicemail system with auto attendant and 8 mailboxes

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad handsets a major problem
We have used this system in a business for almost two years.Nearly every handset we have purchased is defective out of the box or shortly thereafter. The major problem is poor sound -- you can hardly hear the caller. With other units, the caller can't hear you.Out of the five handsets we're currently using (all out of warranty) one is good, three are so-so, and one is very bad. We're hoping to find an alternative, but need at least three lines.

1-0 out of 5 stars -2 STARSWORST $600.00 INVESTMENT EVER!!!!
Our office has had this system for two weeks. One handset has already gone bad and another keeps giving a message to move closer to the base unit.Funny thing is, you can be within a foot of the base unit and no reception. We are going to try the Motorola MD681 for half the price of the Panasonic.I'll Let you know about that later.

4-0 out of 5 stars Has flaws but a lot for the money
I've been using this system in a busy office for five years now.True, there are some annoying flaws you should know before buying.. Among them: no mute buttons, handset touch tone buttons that wear out easily, the need to buy extra handsets to set up extra voice mailboxes, lousy sound quality on the autoattendant outgoing message, no way to change the automated attendant remotely. But in general, the system does what they say it will do and it does it reliably.Once you get the hang of it, it's easy to set up.And you get the business functions, autoattendant, intercom, voicemail, remote access, etc, without having to pay a reseller thousands of dollars. There aren't a lot of products like this one.I hope it stays on the market.

2-0 out of 5 stars There is an alternative...
One person mentioned that this system was the "only game in town". Not true.

CentrePoint Technologies's TalkSwitch is a great alternative. If you purchase the Panasonic with a few extensions ($600+), you could easly own this unit for a comparable price. And it has more features, is much more versatile, and uses your existing equipment.

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST PHONE I EVER BOUGHT
I have purchased TWO Panasonic 4 line phone systems for my business. One was for our office in NY and one for our office in IL. I bought both systems through the Hello Direct website.

The #1 that you press on the hand set does not work. It is defective on ALL of our 6 hand sets that we own. This means we CAN NOT use the phone to dial out on long distance calls that need the use of the one.

We had bought and used the first system and then bought another system before we began the issues of the #1 not working. The first system in NY was the one to experience this problem , at first.

I proceeded to call the Panasonic GA office and they also would not deal with the issue.

At this point, now BOTH systems are incapable of being used. All we can do is just dial from the base and then pick up the line on the handset.

Today, we called cusomer service and spoke to Chris Cabutaje, a supervisor, and he told us there was nothing he could do. He even admitted there was a problem with this phone but still did nothing.

I think this is an outrage that a company this big cannot stand behind its product. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Phones don't give warning...just go dead!
We bought the main 2431 with 2 add'l handsets.ALL the phones, when the battery is low it goes "Beep beep beep" as a warning and then dies!!!By the time we search for another one the call has been disconnected.I have another VTech phone that's not near as expensive and it warns when battery is low and gives you 3 minutes or so to change the battery.

4-0 out of 5 stars V-Tech expandable phones
I have this set.I actually have the base one with 2 expandables.I love it, works well.I have an apartment with only 1 good jack.So this helps me to have a phone in just about every room. You can even replace them on the others handset with no problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars you can stop looking for a phone now.
I bought the V Techphone systemover 3 years ago and I am still very happy with it. Great features, great looking phone. I have one in almost every room of my house. If you get the base model then you can expand the system to 4 phones. A really great thing if you have teenagers in your house. It has an intercom system which is a nice convenience too. It is reasonably priced and full of all the features that you could possibly want. A great buy for the money. Finallly, a terrific phone with all the features for the average household.! Teenagers love it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Phone - well worth the money
I was in severe need of a good cordless phone with a Caller ID Display right on the handset (which is so conveinent).I shopped around in every possible electronics store and found nothing that I liked...all the phones were ugly and had no good features.

I jumped onto Amazon and this phone system popped up I loved it at first for it's sleek look and then I read more about the phone and immediately ordered it, it was the best thing I did. This phone is excellent it has great features, distance, sound, clarity and it's lightweight and is a real nice looking phone. It has the Caller ID display right on the handset and the best feature that I love is the Message Waiting.I have home voicemail through my local telephone company and I was never able to tell if I had any messages unless I picked up my phone and dialed into my mailbox. This phone has a green light on the handset and the base that will blink when you have messages and on the display it will read "Messages Waiting"...I love it!I just ordered the supplemental handset for our bedroom and can't wait to get so I can junk my old cordless. If you are thinking buying this phone....do it!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Features/Easy to use
Needed a phone for an addition to the house that we did not put a phone jack in.There are many phones that can handle this but this phone has all the nice features needed for family and working from home a few days a week. The ability for each handset to be its' own speakerphone is great. We also utilize the intercom feature for the phones. You can page each phone you have (4 is the max) and the person in the room will hear it ring as if it were a phone call. The digital voice on the answering machine is very easy to understand and the multiple mailbox feature is another nice thing to have (not needed now, but will in the future). Many other features that are handy as well.So far so good. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars finally returned to store
Terrible reception (bought from Best Buy for $94...much higher than Amazon).Worked with Motorola CS with no positive results.Replacing with Uniden 5.4 (already have several and should not have deviated from a known).

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Wouldn't work out of the box.Continually received "out of range" message even when connected to the charger.Requires complicated "registration" procedure when used with additional handsets.Terrible owner's manual with absolutely no troubleshooting help.It went back for a refund the next day!

2-0 out of 5 stars Junk
I was looking for a handset that would not interfere with 2.4Ghz wireless that has taken over my neighborhood and caused many reception problems. Saw the Motorola 5.8Ghz and thought I'd give it a try after trying out a Panasonic 5.8Ghz which sounded like I was talking through atin can. Unfortunately Motorola was just a bit better on sound quality, but not much. The last part of every word gets cut off. I couldn't go far from the base without loosing signal and the volume was low to medium. Battery life was marginal at best.I am slightly hard of hearing, (but have perfect pitch) so having a little more juice in this department would be good. The features are okay but, layout and interface are primitive compared to other phones in this price range. I guess the3rd time is the charm because I ended up finding the5.8GHz Uniden Tru 8860-2 finally with normal human voice quality and volume when needed. The layout and functionality for the features are intuitive and easy where the phone is not drawing attention to itself because of it's quirkienessand low quality (Motorola and Panasonic.) Take it from me, if you are looking for a 5.8 Ghz phone, get the Uniden

2-0 out of 5 stars WARNING - Phone not compatible with cable phone service
These phones worked fine for us until we changed our phone service to a cable company - serviced phone line.I am no techy, so I don't know exactly what the problem was, but the phones WILL NOT RING.They recognize the incoming call, the phone lights up and the caller ID works, but no ring.

We spent almost an hour on the phone with Motorola and they finally concluded that the phone just would not ring with this phone service.

We are returning the phones and seeking another brand that is compatible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable features, dreadful audio
This phone has a reasonable set of features, and a good, compact form factor.Unfortunately the headset turns out to be uncomfortable and unwieldly to use, and more importantly the sound quality is appaling. It is frequently difficult to hear the other party at all: there is almost constant interference (the main reason for opting for a5.8GHz phone is not to get interference -- note also that I've used this set in two separate locations with the same results), the volume is too low, and even on maximum the hands-free remains almost inaudible.

Avoid. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst battery life I have ever seen
My first concern about this phone was the battery. I noticed immediately that the battery never stopped charging. I contacted Motorola and asked if this was normal. They said, "Yes, it never stops charging." That is insane! You can destroy the batteries very quickly if you keep charging them non-stop. So far the battery life has been very poor. I've probably already damaged my battery. Do not buy this phone. You will be very unhappy. I've had a number of complaints that my voice was breaking up. I attributed that to my VoIP service (Vonage). But now I'm wondering if it wasn't the phone. The audio quality is also very poor.

1-0 out of 5 stars This phone shouldn't be on the market
What? No "0 star" option? That's what this POS phone system deserves.

I was seduced by its clean design and good looks, but I literally had to throw this phone and two expansion handsets away. The problems:

(1) As other reviewers have noted, the menuing system was designed by an engineer with no interface design experience. Just basic things like putting "New Entry" as the first item on the Phonebook. Duh. That wouldn't fly after even the most rudimentary user testing. And, again, as others have noted, the "sharing phonebook" functionality described in the user manual DOES NOT WORK, which makes the phonebook somewhat useless.

(2) Battery life *is* bad.

(3) After using it for about a month there was terrible static on the line, even though the phone line checked out OK. I called Motorola and they said the phone should be 10 feet from any electrical appliance to avoid static. Huh? I think every household in America has a phone in the kitchen, where *appliances* are. What a joke.

(4) When a message is left and the caller hangs up, there is a burst of loud static at the end of the message. It's incredibly annoying.

Bottom line: DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! It's garbage that should not be available for purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars What has happened to Motorola?
I've had the phone for about two months, and as others have said, the sound quality is bad. Also, the sound drops out from time-to-time so we constantly have to ask the person on the other end to repeat things because we miss sylables or words. The hand set lasts for about 30 minutes before it has to be recharged.

Several times per week (sometimes per day), when the handset is replaced in the charging cradle, the base unit locks up and becomes non-functional.The only fix is to remove AC power and batteries from the base unit.Motorola customer support just keeps sending me instructions for removing the batteries from the handset, even though I've repeatedly explained that the problem is with the base unit.

I've had enough lousy products from Motorola over the last couple years that I'm finally starting to get it -- they don't make good producst anymore (I can't stand waiting for my cell phone to "boot").

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
Finally, a cordless phone that sounds like a "good old" phone. ... meaning the calls sound better than any I've heard from a cordless. We like the handset grip and find it appealing.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Bad Experience
I bought this from Amazon along with an extra handset. My kids loved the features and the retro look. But the sound was awful, dropping syllables, and sometimes whole words, of the person on the line so you had to guess what they were saying.Motorola tech support told me to move the phone away from all interference: refridgerators, stereos, lamps.Lamps?"I thought the 5.8 GHz was meant to resist interference.""No sir, these phones are very sensitive."So I found a corner of my house away from everything, even lamps.Same problem.I returned it to Amazon, losing $40 in fees and postage.Bought a Uniden 5.8 GHzat Sears that turned out to have all the features plus crystal clear sound.Even right next to the lamp! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious yet powerful
I have *fallen in love* with this phone since I bought it a week back. this is at the lower end of the panasonic 5.8ghz line of models.

These are the reasons I like the fone

* 5.8ghz which will not interrupt with my wi-fi networks
* Handset speakerphone - Very good quality
* 3-4 monotone and 3 music ringers (can be customized for callers)
* Handset light indicator - 3 colors - again can be customized for callers - Useful when you want silent option
* Excellent range and call quality

It does not have the following features

* Dual Keypad
* Ringer for base
* Answering machine
* Caller id announcement
* and some more

These do not bother me since I knew what I was buying. Obviously if you need these there are higher end panasonic models that you can go for. ... Read more

Product Description

Following the success of 900 MHz frequency phones, 2.4 GHz phones transmit at even a higher frequency. If you already own one or more 900 MHz telephones, consider a 2.4 GHz model when you are looking to add an additional cordless telephone. Many 2.4 GHz phones can transmit greater amounts of data than lower-frequency units. VTech calls this greater bandwidth. One advantage of greater bandwidth is the ability to link multiple handsets to a single base unit.Add this expansion handset/charger to your base unit to turn your cordless telephone into a multi-handset system. Imagine, up to 4 cordless phones with only one phone jack! Features include call waiting ID, 50 name-and-number phone book directory and handset speakerphone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great features; not so great durability
Phone has good sound quality in handset and speakerphone mode, great range from base station, easy to use presets and other dialing functions. However, many of the keys have already become somewhat lame. They now require you to press very hard; I have missed more than one call because the on/answer button simply would not respond no matter how hard I pressed it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good and not so good
This phone system met our needs perfectly (two lines, no messaging system, speaker phone, multiple handset capability) and from that point of view its been a really good phone. However, the keypads on the handsets have become problematic:you have to really press hard to get a number to register and when you do you often get multiples of the one number you're trying to type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Also Works With VTech 20-2489 System.
This VTech 20-2420 Accessory Handset also works with the VTech 20-2489 Expandable Phone system.

The 20-2489 system is identical to the VTech 20-2481 Expandable Phone system, except that the 20-2489 system has a 20-2420 handset (with stand/charger) included in the box, for a total of *two* handsets, instead of just one.

5 stars because it works well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone system
This is a terrific, well-priced, and reliable phone. Reception is clear, battery life is adequate and it is simple to use. I have tried many, more expensive systems and the v-tech 2 line is the best. Additional phones can be added seamlessly and you do not need an outlet in every room. The answering machine can be acceseed from any handset and the paging functions work quite well. I now have 5 phones using 2 lines on the system and am very pleased.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
The expandable two line phone solved all our phone problems. It has been very reliable and I have added to the system so we now have four phones plus the base. A good buy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
Before I bought this phone, I had a 7-year-old Toshiba 2.4GHz phone and a 7-year-old Panasonic digital answering machine. I had to replace the phone because it interfered with our wireless network, and I figured I'd get a new answering machine at the same time - 7 years later, the technology must be better, I reasoned.

Not so. The sound quality on this phone OK, but worse than on my old phone. And the sound quality of the answering machine is unacceptaby muffled. But those are the first of several big disappointments. The phone has nearly no sidetone, meaning you don't hear yourself speaking in the earpiece. This makes every call uncomfortable. When the phone is on the base station ringing and you pick it up, it doesn't get "picked up" - you have to press a button. Likewise, hanging it up doesn't hang it up. When you press the button to talk, there's a 1-second delay before the caller can hear you, so you end up saying hello twice. Oh, let's see. The "wallpaper" backgrounds are insanely amateurish. No matter how badly you draw, you draw better than the Michelangelos who made this thing. Next: some features are configured on the screen on the base station, while some are configured with an audio interface. The distinction is random. The icons on the phone are highlighted with a movable square outline - except that some of them ARE squares, so the highlight disappears. My outgoing message is unintelligible - I had to yell into the thing, and you can still barely hear me.

This phone would be a bargain at $10, a reasonable deal at $20, a ripoff at $30. I paid $110. Not happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a phone that has it all
I had an AT & T phone, when it quit I bought another brand of answering machine and phone. Within 2 weeks I was looking for a new AT&T. They have volumes adjustments for the ringer, they have the toll saver option which is great when you check your messages and it it just a great sounding phone. I had bought a GE and had terrible results. I was told to return the phone and expect a new one in 4 weeks. What a joke. Thank goodness Amazon had AT&T.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy, great sound, decent features
I did a resasonable amount of research prior to purchasing this phone. We have owned several cordless phones over the years, different manufacturers, operating frequencies, etc. My wife and I are VERY happy with this phone (and the E580-I handset we bought to go with it). It is solid, sounds WONDERFUL, including the amazing (to me) handset-based speaker phone, and has very nice features. We don't use all of the bells and whistles, but just as a cordless phone it is the most solid and wonderful sounding phone I have ever used. The answering machine is great, easy to set up and easy to use, sounds good, time tags calls, etc. You can even listen to messages from the handset (we've done that a few times).

I agree w/ others that it would be nice to have a single call number database/memory that is shared by all handsets, but that's the only (minor) complaint I have.

Oh yes, I purchased the optional base station backup battery and our phone worked all through a recent multi-hour power failure. Nice! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT PANASONIC PRODUCT!
I've only had this phone a few days, but I'm very happpy
with it! My main concern was the speakerphone. I'm happy
to say it works perfectly. It's very loud, and very clear!
The extra large buttons are a plus for me, because my fingers
are very weak. The only feature this phone doesn't have is,
caller I.D., I don't use this feature anyway, so no big deal.
If you're looking for a great speakerphone, with a great
answering machine, for under $50.00, you'll love this phone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good phone for a good price
Since I knew Panasonic was known for their phones, I purchased this answering machine/phone for a good price here at Amazon.

What I like about this phone.
- It has an All-Digital Answering System. A microship records your greeting message. But what if you don't want to record a mesage? Well, it comes with a pre-recorded message from the factory. So you don't need to record a greeting message if you think you don't have a good voice or something like that. This answering machine lets you record 15 minutes of messages. It may not be enough for some people, but it's enough for me.
- When you play the messages, the phone tells you the day and the time each of the messages was recorded.
- You can listen to your messages from another phone. For example, if you're on vacation, you can call your house from the hotel and listen to your messages and delete them if you want.
- It has Voice Enhacer Technology. It helps clarify and improve sound reception.
- It has 7 selectable ringtones. For people who don't want just a plain ring.
- Handset Speakerphone. This feature is important when you're calling a company and you have to go through their menu. With other cordless phones you have to listen to the menu, take the phone away from your ear, look down at the keypad, and dial. With this phone you don't have to do that. Just press the Hands-Free button and you can listen to the menu without having the phone close to your ear. You can adjut the volume if you want.
- It comes with a Shoulder Rest Attachment and a Belt Clip.
- It's wall mountable.
- If you don't have it on the wall, you can have it on your desk or table. It has a special back so that it doesn't sit flat on the surface.
- You can place the phone on the base in two ways. The picture shows one way to place it (showing the keypad). You can also place so that it shows the back instead.
- Lighted Keypad.
- Big Buttons.

What I don't like about this phone:
- I haven't found anyhing wrong with this phone yet. It's only a month old, though. If I find something, I'll let you know. ... Read more
