Amazon.com Product Description

Providing flexible options for home offices or just for those who'd like an easily accessible second phone, the AT&T 2256 supplies a main communications hub with a digital three-box answering system along with a second handset and charging base. Both handsets offer access to caller ID/call waiting information (with subscription to service through your local company). Caller ID stores the names and numbers of your 50 most recent 50 calls and allows you to return those calls at the touch of a button.

A 50-station phone book provides more permanent access to your most frequently-dialed numbers; you can also add any of the numbers from caller ID to the permanent phone book easily. Selectable ring tones and adjustable volume for both ringer and handset are built in, and you can intercom between the two handsets at the touch of a single button. Thanks to digital spread spectrum technology and a 2.4 GHz frequency, you'll enjoy consistent, clear connections on either handset.

The main base unit includes a fully digital answering system with three separate mailboxes. Divided or not, total recording time is 15 minutes; you have full access to any messages even when you're in another city. Leave memos for other family members or office mates easily. And thanks to the time/date stamp, you'll be able to prioritize calls after a long weekend away. AT&T provides a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great in theory/terrible in reality
I bought this phone for all the great features it listed: caller ID, two handsets, speaker phone, etc.It didn't take long after I lost the receipt to figure out that it was a huge waste of money. We experience the static and beeps that everyone keeps talking about. The beeps are the most annoying.I don't hear them on my end (the line just goes silent on my end), but the person I'm talking to hears them.I just explain to everyone that I have a cruddy phone and haven't found a suitable replacement yet.I have never had the reported problems with the answering machine--that actually seems to be the best part about the phone, but I have started to notice decreased battery life.DON'T buy this phone, and if you already have, find the receipt before it's too late to return it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Isn't 2.4GZ supposed to be clearer than 900MZ?
We tried placing the base in different parts of the house as the manual suggested, but we couldn't clear up the constant background hiss.Voices sound tinny - somewhat like a bad cell phone connection, and it was getting to be a joke how how often we'd ask people to repeat themselves.

The answering machine is also poor, to the point that we would have to replay messages to figure out what was said.

We solved the problem by plugging back in our old Panasonic 900MZ phone/answerer -- no more hiss and people sound like people again.

Sadly, we waited too long to return the AT&T system, so we turned off the answerer and use the phones mostly for the caller ID feature. And while it is convenient to have the AT&T phone in the basement, we typically answer it, then walk it upstairs where we can switch to a decent phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad
I have had problems with this phone too. One headset has died and the beeps that everyone mentions are a very big problem. I bought this because I work from home and the speaker phone option on the headset was a must have, but everyone on the phone hears random beeping! I spent hours on the phone with ATT customer support and they had no idea how to fix it.

1-0 out of 5 stars the worst phone ever
This is the worst phone I have ever owned. I had to return it after a few weeks. Actually, the phone itself was fine, but the answering machine was unusable. There was so much static that we could not understand any of the messages. And when leaving a message, there was horrible static as well. I wish I had seen the reviews before I bought the phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste yourmoney on this phone system
I have had this phone for about 1 1/2 years and have been disappointed with it.The person on the other end is getting annoying beeps that are loud enough to interrupt the conversation. The talker doesn't hear it but the listener gets a loud beep in their ear about every 30 seconds to 1 minute. ... Amazon.com Product Description

The i5866 from VTech is a 5.8 GHz cordless phone system with a number of handy extras, including an all-digital answering system, and multi-user expandability to eight handsets. The i5866 utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency and digital spread spectrum technology to provide clear, accurate reception with less interference than traditional 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz phones. The answering machine stores up to 15 minutes of messages split among three mailboxes, while full remote operation allows you to check messages even while you are away from home.

Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the i5866 has a 50-number caller ID memory as well as a separate 50-name-and-number phone directory to help you keep track of important contacts. You can select among eight ring tones and 12 musical ringers, while the supplied audio patch cord allows you to record custom ring tones.

A speakerphone on the handset combines with headset compatibility to provide hands-free communication options. Handset-to-handset call transfer allows you to route incoming calls to any handset registered to the system, while three-way conferencing lets you communicate with multiple parties at once. An intercom feature provides a way to communicate between handset locations, and a global page/handset function lets you speak with all handsets at once.

Additional features include flash, redial (last 10 numbers), and hold. The NiMH battery provides up to eight hours of talk time or up to five days on standby, while a low-battery indicator lets you know when to return a handset to its charging cradle. A handset control allows you to adjust volume levels. The i5866 also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why can't they make a really good 5.8 ghz phone?
Let me start by saying that this unit is OK.The problems have been covered in the other reviews. (Although the person who said it works on 2.4 ghz and interferes with wireless networks is wrong, it runs entirely on 5.8 ghz according to the specifications. And I haven't noticed any interference with my wireless network at home. (If you have an 802.11b/g network at home, go with a 5.8ghz phone)

As someone else said, the charging light blinks when it shouldn't. I have NiHM batteries installed, and the manual says it ``Flashes quickly when Alkaline batteries are detected in the spare battery drawer.``Well, it detects them wrong. Probably a scam to get you to buy their own overpriced batteries. Sad, because this was a major selling point of this unit.

But the worse problem: the answering machine is HORRIBLE. Not the functionality, which is fine, but the audio quality! Everyone sounds like they are speaking Mandarin Chinese underwater. Considering how cheap RAM is these days, I don't know why these guys have to go and use such an aggressive audio codec that garbles almost all voices. And good luck if someone is leaving you a message from a cell phone, with the digital cell phone compression artifacts and the bad compression in this answering machine, make the playback quality almost unusable.

And I agree that in this day and age, it's stupid that the handsets don't sync their caller ID and address books and ringer settings.

Come on Vtech. get on the ball. This is 2005. If you can sell phones that you can download your own custom ring tones to, you can fix these other problems.

I wish manufacturers would stop the feature race and get down and create some good quality on their products!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ty in CA
Overall this phone is good.I have 4 handsets (one in each room), and the base. Here are the pros and cons I found with the phone.

Pros
1.It has excellent sound quality.Very clear voices.
2.No static, feedback, interference, or disconnecting.
3.It is easily expandable to add another handset.
4.User friendly Menu driven setup.Has soft keys much like a cell phone.
5.Easy to retrieve call log, and to store them in phonebook.
6.The handset lights up like a Christmas tree when it rings.
7.You can see the caller ID from 20 paces.
8.Comfortable in the hand.
9.Speakerphone on each handset is very nice.
10.Ringtones allow you to determine who's calling.

Cons
1.And this is a big one. Each handset stores a separate phone book.So now I have to go to four phones to enter a new entry.
2.The message play back is muffled, and unclear.I cannot even recognize when it's my mother.
3.If you have 10 messages that you have already listened to, and want to replay the 10th, you have to skip 1 thru 9 to hear the 10th.This does not apply to new messages which you can hear at the press of one button.
4.Handset only lasts off charger for about 2-3 days.My previous Panasonic lasted about 2 weeks.
5.There is no warning when the handset battery is about to die.Just the ear-splitting beep, and it is dead. The battery indicator on handset is worthless.
6. Intercom feature is not what i expected. It just rings another handset and requires someone to answer it.

Features I don't need
1.3 separate message banks, requires the caller to press which bank they want to use.
2.Pictures on the headset that identify who is calling (for example, a picture of someone fishing).
3.Backup battery storage.Just make them last longer instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent sound, clumsy functionality
I got this phone after three consecutive defective 5850/5825 sets. I haven't owned this long enough to see if it is as prone to defects as those models, but a few initial opinions.

1. The handset it too heavy for comfort in my view.

2. The keys are not easily pressed. I am having to double-push fairly frequently. The face of the keypad is convex, which makes the keys less easily located, and they are almost flush with the surface, which makes them hard to depress properly. Ease of use seems to not be on the list of important elements of phone design anymore.

3. Unlike the other models I owned, the handsets in this series don't all share phonebooks. You would think that a favorable feature like this, included in other models, would also be in this one, but you would be wrong. Instead they give you an equalizer. Big deal. To delete your Caller ID listings from multiple units is a major pain.

4. This company has tragic customer support. Expect to spend hours on the phone is you experience the slightest problem. And the it might get resolved.

5. To my midwestern eyes this phone is really gaudy and ugly. I wish Apple Computer designed home phones.

6. The base screen perpetually displays a message warning one to use rechargable batteries only, and a "charging" light is always blinking. It is very annoying in a bedroom at night.

7. It has decent sound coming and going.

2-0 out of 5 stars get the old 2461
I'd gone through about 8 phones before finding v-tech generally to be the best and most logical. I had the 2461 system which I adored, but after 4 yrs, had to replace, so I upgraded to the 5866. This is a comparison between the 2.
While loaded with silly features like a choice of ugly images, The unit is flashy, ugly and cumbersome. The 2461 neslted comfortably in the hand. The range is about the same, even though it is a 5.8g. The photo is deceptive, because the angle makes the phone look slim. The max volume is too low. The speakerphone max volume is useless with any ambient noise. Clarity is only slightly worse than the 2461. The handsets are not wall mountable, which the 2461's were. For the search through the phonebook for #s you have to press the advance key separately for each "next", which on the 2461 you just keep the key pressed. I hate it, and will try and find another of my beloved 2461s. Both phones keep the date and OGM through power outages, with the spare battery installed. This is an important feature if you have "spotty" elect service, which I've only found on V-Techs, and is not mentioned in any phone specs. Both also do not display the incoming phone #, even though I have caller ID, and the #s are in my phone book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi sound quality, Nice Features, Value
I run an 802.11b network at home, the router is right next to the base station and I have no interference problems. Not sure that the reviewer who disparaged the phone for interference potential actually tried it.

The phone & base look stylish (not cheap like old vtech phones) and has great features:
- Orange backlit keys
- Speakerphone on handset.
- Ability to record custom ringers from any sound source having a standard mini-plug headset jack (cord included).
- Base can take two rechargeable AA batteries (about $8 at a Staples) and let you swap for dead batts in your handset OR talk for ~2 hours during a power outage!

Only thing I'd like would be ability to listen to messages from the handset.Didn't get the 5867 because I didn't think a color display was worth extra $20; I'm pretty sure that's the only difference between the two phones.

Oh, most importantly--sound quality is great both ways. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Uniden EXS9966 two-line cordless phone helps organize your busy family or home office. It supports two lines, three- and four-way conference calling, and caller ID with call waiting--all in an easy-to-operate unit.

Before testing the Uniden EXS9966, we charged it for the recommended 15 to 20 hours, which is longer than most rechargeable batteries require. A spare handset battery (not included) can be charged in the base. A laminated quick guide is included for convenient reference to basic phone operations.

In our tests of the Uniden EXS9966, we were able to take the phone outside over 700 feet from the base before detecting any voice breakup. Although the range was impressive, we did notice a slight background humming even at close range, but it wasn't excessively distracting. We were able to take the phone behind walls and near electronic equipment without losing signal strength.

With the additional keypad on the base, the handset and the base can be used at the same time on separate lines. If the handset is already in use on one line, you can use the base station to make or receive calls on the other line. Indicators let you know which line is in use. The controls that operate these features are intuitive.

The sturdy handset has a lighted keypad and LCD. The conference and intercom buttons allow you to add a third or fourth party to a conversation. To add a party to line one, press the hold button, press the line two button, and dial the number of the person you want to include. To bring the first person back into the conversation, press the conference button. A fourth person, at either the handset or base, can also join your conversation.

You can store up to 40 speed-dial numbers in memory. We were easily able to store a number using the LCD and arrow keys on the handset. To dial a stored number, we pressed the memory button, found the number on the LCD, and selected a line. The handset's LCD also provides caller ID information, if you subscribe to caller ID or caller ID with call waiting. You can position the handset face up on the base for convenient caller identification on both lines. The EXS9966 also has a generous 80-number caller ID log. --Emily Bakko

  • Allows 3- or 4-way conversations
  • Sturdy construction and intuitive layout

3-0 out of 5 stars Loses its Charm Quickly
I bought this phone almost two years ago and, let me tell you, it loses its charm FAST.The different Disney song ring tones that are at first cute, quickly become annoying and there really isn't a "standard" ring tone to enable.Further, the phone has several major drawbacks:

1- You can't cradle it between ear and neck and go "hands-free" while doing dishes or folding laundry because the adorable Mickey shaped on/off button is at just the right spot to hangup on you every time.

2- There is a ring delay/disconnect delay. So, when my house phones are all ringing, this phone is behind.By the time Mickey starts singing, the answering machine downstairs has picked up.

3- The phone doesn't keep a charge and has to be in the base after almost every call.

4- This is my second phone; the first caught fire when I plugged it in for the initial charge and had to be exchanged.

Overall- cute concept but definitely needs some design revisions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hang up problem is a deal breaker....
No matter how cute & stylish this phone is, it just doesn't make up for the fact that I hang up on the person I'm talking to EVERY SINGLE TIME I attempt to hold the phone on my shoulder. I go out of my way to walk to another room to answer a different phone so I don't have to deal with this constant problem. So I might as well not even have it....

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't last to long
The mickey-mouse phone was nice while it lasted, after a while it stopped working, the phone doesn't turn on anymore and sometimes it doesnt ring. i thought that it was the battery so i replaced it but that didnt work i replaced it twice thinking it was the wrong one that i bought the first time but nothing its still down so its cute and the ring tone are addorable but its just for show and tell now thats it. SORRY TO SAY BUT ITS NOT WORTH THE $60.00 THAT I PAID FOR IT.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Design
Let me first say, I love the look and idea behind this phone...I am a big Disney addict, BUT whoever designed this phone should be fired!I have 2 kids and I work out of my home and need to use the phone a lot.I cannot even count how many times I have hung up on poor unsuspecting souls on the other end.If you even press the phone into your ear too hard while holding on to it, it will hang up!And, the caller id feature is horrible also.It constantly misses calls.I do not use this phone anymore! (but I keep it plugged in because I like the Mickey Music when I get calls)

1-0 out of 5 stars Love the thought behind it, but bad design!!
This phone is cute and I loved the ringer sounds and the thought behind the design, but the people who designed this obviously never really tested it. You can not do ANYTHING while you are on this phone...you hang up on people constantly. I am a very busy mother of 3 and it is soooo embrassing to have to call people back and apologize for hanging up on them.I do not have a time where my hands can just sit and hold a phone to my ear.I am constantly resting the phone between my shoulder and ear, this phone is not made properly to allow you to do that. I highly recommend against purchasing this phone!!!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing answering system
After seeing good reviews for many of the AT&T phones here ,I bought the E5900B locally. The unit seemed to have good quality build and a great features list. Unfortunately, I am returning it before using many of the features. The sound quality on the answering machine is so poor, nothing else could get me to keep this unit. I couldn't recognize my wife's voice on trial messages. It is overly compressed, like some Battlestar Gallactica robotic voice. It is worse than a 10 yr. old no name unit I had previously. I would rather have had 12 minutes of clear time than 25 minutes of this.

The handsets are good, with clear reception on calls. Range seemed acceptable, but not exceptional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic purchase!
I originally had the Siemens Gigaset before this model and lightning struck my home. When I got ready to replace old the system, I knew I wanted the same great quality. This phone is wonderful, everything can be done from any handset. Something that I didn't discover until we moved in to a multiple story home and my neice was playing with the phone is the intercom feature. It lets you page any one or all the phones at any time, even when you're online! I can page and talk to people all over the house without going back up and down the stairs. It has kept me from having to yell through the house whenever I needed something or someone. It's a great purchase, and if lighting strikes again, I'm getting the same phone system or the upgrade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone
Was looking for an easy solution to phone quality and ease of use with an integrated answering system.Persistence in reading the documentation thoroughly was key in setting the phones up properly. The quality is really far and away much better than any other phones I've used.I love quality stuff so this fit me to a T.Price was good.So far, after about 6 months we've had no problems.I am a very satisfied customer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Phone System - Excellent range, and features
Well, first to the reviewer "m_night2" from Savannah, who said you can use "regular" AA batteries in this phone... that is NOT true. The manual explicitly says that you CANNOT do that, and that the batteries must be NiCD or NiMH rechargeables. This is probably the reason he had trouble with his phone, because regular AA alkaline batteries are different voltage and milliamps than NiMH rechargeables.Use the right batteries and these phones work great.

The features are well thought out - everything is controllable from the handset. One nice thing is that you can pick up your messages from ANY handset. And you can set options from any handset. One of the dissapointments is that the phones do not replicate the directory from handset to handset, so you have to reenter all the names and numbers in every handset. (I really didn't expect that to work, but I was hoping.)

Great buy overall. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD. Beware of Panasonic's deceptive customer service.
It is with great frustration that I am writing this product review. I have had too much trouble with the battery for the cordless telephone handset (Model KX-TG2700S) and I have complained to Panasonics as described below.

March 8, 2005: I made the first call to Panasonic (1-800-211-7262) to explain that the original battery (Model N4HKGMA00001) for my telephone's handset had stopped working. In particular, since December 2004, in less than one year from the initial purchase, I was unable to charge the battery from the base unit. The customer service agent I spoke to promised to send me a replacement battery free of charge.

March 31, 2005: When after three weeks of my March 8th call I did not receive the battery, I called Panasonic again. This time, the customer service agent told me that there had been an error in processing my order. The agent then went on to process the order again and provided me an order number.

April 16, 2005: Once again I did not receive the battery even after two weeks of my March 31st call, so I called Panasonic again. This time, the customer service agent told me that Panasonic had stopped sending the batteries for Model KX-TG2700 as of March 19, 2005.

Hence, I am now concluding that Panasonic customer service has been giving me a run around to save Panasonic a mere $15, the cost of the battery. I complained about the defective battery on March 8, 2005, before Panasonic's March 19, 2005 decision to suspend sending out the replacement batteries. I think Panasonic's modus operandi is quite disgusting. I bought an expensive phone believing it to be a good purchase. Now I am realizing that it was a big mistake giving my business to Panasonic. I do understand that the batteries have to be replaced from time to time, and I also understood when I bought the phone that the original battery would last for at least 2 years (as reiterated by Panasonic's customer service agent during my March 8, 2005 call!).

I believe that Panasonic is willing to lose a customer who would buy more products in future to save a mere $15. It is now abundantly clear to me that Panasonic works on deception and cheats its customers out of the value of their product. In light of the lousy customer service provided to me, I will not buy any Panasonic products in future.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Energizer battery makes a big difference!
I've had this phone for a couple of years now. The feature are decent and I like the handset speakerphone.
We had a lot of trouble with the battery at first. It eventually got so bad that we started using the base to make calls. We finally got the Energizer ER-P511 battery and it made a huge improvement! I hardly ever hear that annoying beep anymore!

I'm satisfied with the phone overall. Some of my complaints is that the expansion handsets seem a little pricey. Also the 2.4Ghz seems to interfere with the wireless video kit that I just got, so I'm thinking of moving to a 5.8Ghz system with an extra handset. However, there does not seem to be too much interference with my 2.4ghz DLINK DI-514.

1-0 out of 5 stars We absolutely hate this phone system (Really 0 stars)
Oh, let us count the ways:

1) The battery life, as everyone mentions, is horrible. I suspect their recharging unit is not very smart, and thus they kill the batteries thanks to overcharging due to the so-called battery 'memory effort,' but I do not know this fer sure. The battery in one phone has now died on us, one is now so faint you can barely hear it, and the last one doesn't recharge much, and dies within the span of a 10 minute conversation when 'fully' charged.

2) There is also a short in the system, possibly related to the bad battery life, that results in the LCD screen blanking out when the phone is on the charger, and it only sometimes comes back alive. This makes the nice Caller ID LCD feature often useless.

3) They are NOT at all cheap for this level of crappiness. We decided to spring for what we thought were 'high-end' phones and got a terrible phone instead.

We will probably try to find the Energizer ER-P511 batteries to see if that solves our problems. But I'm tempted to go back to old but far more reliable phones. Alas, if only our cell phones worked in the house. (DON'T get me started on that one...)

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice feature set but poor implementation
I've owned Panasonic phones pretty much for the last 10 years and they've all been great. When I saw the verbose feature list on this phone plus the 2.4Ghz range, I jumped.

I liked the cell phone like approach to storing numbers, though the interface is quite clunky.Sometimes it's hard to figure out your way back to the main menu.

Anyway, the main beef I have with this phone is battery life and construction quality.I've had the phone for less than a year and the battery has reached the point where it starts beeping after having one conversation on the phone. This is unacceptable. For some reason, the LCD panel has gotten so faded that I can barely read it without extreme darkness.I tried to adjust the contrast but nothing happened.

Luckily I bought this phone with a 2yr replacement warranty at Best Buy and I'm returning it and its accessory phone to get a better system.

I was very happy with the features but the promise was greater than the execution.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible, terrible phone
Horrible battery life. Returned the first one after a week, but second one was no better. Constantly needs charging and even then I'm lucky to get 1/2 hour of talk time. My old Panasonics were incredible - with regular use I could go 4 or 5 days without charging. Sadly, I don't think the 5.8g's are any better. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Take your money elsewhere!
I purchased this phone with an additional handset last week and it is of extremely poor quality so I have resumed use of my old 900 mhz VTech. This phone causes both an echo of my voice and a loss of fluid communication, which, is the reason for its use!In sum, take your money elsewhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product - No caller I.D. bug either
I have four of these phones (a base and three additional phones) and four teenagers! I think they have held up well. I have also found the Caller I.D. feature to work fine as well. An earlier reviewer indicated it had a bug, but I think this will solve the problem for him. Page 42 of the manual explains that to change the Caller I.D. display, you press # until you see the number in the display change to the way you need it to be to dial it (i.e., push the # sign until the #1 appears before the phone number to dial a long-distance number).

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Phone
Poor quality unit. That's why AT&T doesn't sell these themselves, but out-sources them instead. Half the time I have a echo in my ear of myself when I use the phone. Now it has developed a "Chripping" sound that you only hear once you have dialed the number. The person on the other end can't hear you when this happens. Solution is hang up, walk over to base unit, pick base unit up about 4 inches from desk, drop base unit on desk, re-dial the phone number. Of course these undocumented features (problems) began shortly after the warranty had expired.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't what some of you are doing
I don't know what some of you are doing with your phones, but I have not had any problems over the past YEAR with my phone. The only problem I have experienced is that someone in my house left one of my three handsets on the back of my truck. It is nowhere to be found. Thanks alot Kevin!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Purchase This Phone
I'd give it 0 stars if I could. I had the same problem with the phone cutting out as the person from Plainview, NY.See AT&T 2300 2.4 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID for the review. I do not have call waiting nor do most of the people I call. AT&T was trying to blame the problem on that, but it must be something else. They sent me a new phone (wrong model) to replace it, but it had the same issue. I sent it back. Later, the original phone was unable to find it's base even though other phones worked fine when plugged into the phone connection. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Battery life - issues
I've had this phone for nearly a year now, it has been hardly used, 3 hours per week the most and the battery died on both units.I will have to replace the batteries since it is not usable at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Short Battery Life and Low Volume
I bought this phone in the store that I worked in, immediately after it came on the market.
Pro:
It is a very good phone. Very clear and quite good range (I've seen better but not too many). It has a lot of nice features like transferring the phone book from one unit to another. It has an excellent speaker-phone on the base and handset.
Con:
All my customers told me, and I have experienced it myself: very short battery life. It lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours in a conversation and I had to replace the battery after only 8 months. Now it seems that the second battery is dieing even faster.
Also, you can turn the volume on the handset earpiece to the max, it will still be low. We are mainly using it with the speaker-phone so we can hear comfortably. And we are not def. Trust me!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good phone but deteriorating battery life
This phone is packed with features. The only problem I faced was the battery life. The life of the battery started deteriorating 4 months after the purchase. I had to change it after 6 months as it would not last for more than 15 minutes.I thought that I was the only one with this problem and that turned out to be incorrect. My colleagues and relatives who bought the same phone had battery issues too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Second phone died too!Horrible product, do NOT recommend.
My wife purchased this product from eBay last December, when it arrived I set it up according to the instructions, let it charge for the requisite 6 hours and about an hour after I used it for the first time, the handset screen died.About an hour later the auxiliary screen died as well and finally the screen died on the base about 15 minutes later.I called Panasonic for assistance and was disconnected twice from the 800# before I finally managed to stay connected and spoke to a tech, who insisted that it must have been a power surge and the unit was going to have to be replaced.

The unit was still under warranty, even though we were not the original purchasers. We got all the information required and sent it along with the unit to the 'regional' repair place that was designated and waited. And waited for over a month.I finally placed a call to the repair place and was informed that they had been unable to fix it and had shipped it to the main Panasonic repair depot in Texas, who, when I called there insisted they had not received it.I called the first place back to tell them that, they were adamant that they had sent it, and gave me a tracking number to give to the depot.I suggested that they might want to handle this internally, since I was starting to have to call toll numbers in order to contact these places, and it was starting to wear on my nerves.

My wife suggested that we send a letter to the President of Panasonic, hoping that if we lit a fire under them there, our phone would be found. No such luck.6 months went by, there was one more phone call from the people at the regional repair center, asking if we had gotten the phone back, when I informed them that we hadn't, the woman on the other end said that she would "do something" and hung up.Another 2 months went by when I received in the mail a letter from the President's assistant asking if I had either received the phone as was satisfactorily pleased, or if I had any more information about the phone to give them, so they could close the matter interally.I called the woman at the number she gave me and told her in no certain terms that I was EXTREMELY disappointed with my experience with her company and that I hadn't either received the phone or any word about what had happened to it.The next day there was a package on the doorstep. It was a replacement phone...same model.I called the woman back and asked for an explanation. She said that the outfit in Texas had only just "found" the phone on the other side of the warehouse (in another plane of existence no doubt) and had shipped me a refurbished model.

This afternoon the phone stopped working in spectacular fashion. The base is flashing like a christmas tree and there's a message on the screen that says "System Error #9", of which I can find no reference in the owner's manual and when I called the customer service line, I was disconnected TWICE so far.

I am livid, this is ridiculous. If I could give a NO stars rating, I would, since a negative rating is also unavailable.

At this point I'm going to email the woman that had contacted me the last time, I made sure to get her email address so that I didn't have to call her on my dime for satisfaction.IF you're considering buying Panasonic, think twice. You were warned.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Battery Life
I had the same problem as another reviewer. After less than a year the handset batteries will not hold a charge. If it wasn't for the expected yearly battery expense ($10 each), I would have rated this a 5-star phone system.I have four phones purchesed within a few months and all of them, one-by-one ended up with the same problem. I bought new batteries and hope not to, but I expect to have to replace them again in 8-12 months. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Telephone
This is an exceptional 5.8 GHz cordless telephone. The sound quality, range, speakerphone on handsets, caller id and simplicity of use are all excellent.Having the 2 telephones means you will always have a telephone charged and ready to use when needed. The battery and standby capability both work very well. The design is both clean and aesthetically pleasing.

The only negative that I will assign to this cordless telephone is that the buttons are slightly on the small side.

If you are looking solely for a two telephone 5.8GHz system that is easy to use and secure, this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cut Above
First, ignore the review written by "An Electronics Fan" because they discussed an answering machine in the review, and this item does NOT have an answering machine.

These phones operate perfectly. The DSS offers a phone with no interference or distortion of voices.Very clear reception, good range, and you can store 100 numbers in each headset, which is certainly sufficient for most at home purchasers. The instructions are reasonably simple and the price is not high when you consider that you have 2 phones for the price of 1.I highly recommend this item for anyone wanting to take "the next step up" with their cordless phone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden 5860-2 5.8Ghz Phones - supurb sound and features
Absolutely supurb sound quality in both handsets; Caller ID + Call Waiting ID + Handset speakerphones + distinctive ringing + many other great features.

The only disappointment was the range of my phones was only about 80 feet from the base.

In spite of the range problem, I love these phones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good pair for a good price.
Our 2.4 system (vtech) was approaching unusable due to static.I finally decided to give the 5.8 phones a try.The phones work great.Clear as a bell. The other reviews capture the qualities of these phones.

My only issues ...
There is no battery indicator.Only the battery low beep, when the battery is about to die.I've grown accustomed to some type of indicator to show me the current status.

The caller id doesn't allow for a number 1 to be added to a number that you want to return a call to.In our area, we need to dial a 1+area code to dial the next door neighbor.

The speakerphone has too much static, but I don't use that feature often. It certainly doesn't sound as good as the handset.

The base could have been designed a bit better to stand vertical.Again, not a big deal.

We can't seem to get into the habit of hitting End to finish a call.Everyone (family, friends and neighbors) taps the large Talk button again when they are done with a call and set the phone down.About a minute later you hear the sound of a phone off the hook.

Having said all that, we really like the phones.

-Sam

1-0 out of 5 stars I receive this phone as a gift, and we don't use it anymore.
My parents purchased this phone for us for Christmas last year. My dad is an electronics king, and loves to research to find the "best" of everything. Well, he was misled on this phone. There was always background noise, we could never hear the people we were talking to, and they could never hear us well.
Also, the answering machine wouldn't stop playing unless we answered this phone. If we picked up any of the others in the house, it would keep playing.

We finally just bought the cheaper 2.4 model ourselves and unplugged this phone and answering machine. Now it just sits here and looks pretty for when the parents come over. I definitely don't recommend it. I feel bad that they paid so much for it and it turned out to be such a bad system. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Panasonic's Best
Positives? Good cordless sound quantity even at greater distances.

Negatives? The mic on the speaker-phone is reported as sounding like I'm speaking through a long tunnel, there is no MUTE on the speaker-phone, battery talk-time is only about 90 to 120 minutes daily, and saving numbers into the directory is much hardware than their older single-line cordless phones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Battery life issues are strange, but can be avoided
I recently acquired a 2.4Ghz Panasonic cordless phone after seeing one my parents have had the last 5 months and being very impressed with the features. I wanted to post this because I've seen the many reviews complaining of poor battery life.

My question for all the people experiencing problems: Did you leave the phone charging on the base unit while you weren't using it? If so, you should understand this. For whatever reason, these phones appear to be counterintuitively designed so that the battery lasts longer when NOT left on the base unit.

And in fact, my owner's manual for model KXZ-TG2355 states this under the Battery Information section: "If the battery is fully charged, you do not have to place the handset on the base unit until 'Recharge battery' is displayed and/or [the battery indicator] flashes. This will maximize battery life."

So although this is a very strange way of designing a phone, it regardless is not something Panasonic doesn't address in its manual, and therefore it can be avoided. Don't leave the phone charging until it needs it! I hope this review will help balance the many complaints from people who advise against getting these phones because their batteries have inexplicably gone dead.

2-0 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO THE BATTERY WARNINGS - I DIDN'T !
Owning an electronics firm, I didn't think I had to pay attention to the Reviews warning of battery problems. However, within three months, I experienced a short battery life that finally diminished to less than 12 hours. The people who rave about the phone, DIDN'T wait long enough to see the problem. I called Panasonic and they sent me another battery, but this one died in the same manner. Now it is my opinion, that Panasonic, a ver smart company, KNOWS about this problem, and it is in EVERY one of these phones. There are only three possible problems: 1) the batteries are no good. or 2) the charging circuit or handset circuit is defective in EVERY board they put in, or 3) the design is faulty and draws too much current. It is also my opinion, that Panasonic is trying to get you OUTSIDE of your Warranty period so you don't have a claim. Anyways, heed the WARNINGS and 1) Don't buy the phone, or 2) If you have already bought it, return it or tell Panasonic you want a DIFFERENT model replacement, and if need be, issue a chargeback on your Credit Card.

2-0 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO THE BATTERY WARNINGS BELOW- I DIDN'T!!
Owning an electronics firm, I discounted the stories of battery problems as described below. Howver, within three months I experienced the phone going dead after only a few hours. A call to Panasonic got them to send me another battery, but, get this, they don't have a heavier duty battery available. Well, this battery developed the same problem, and, it is my opinion, that Panasonic tries to get you beyond the Warranty period. There are three possible problems with the phone: 1) it draws too much current and the battery is not heavy duty enough to last. or 2) the Handset circuit is defective and draws too much current, or 3) the charging circuit is defective in these phones. This isNOT an isolated problem, but apparently is either a mass production circuit board problem or a design flaw. Panasonic is a smart company-they know about this. MY ADVICE: Don't Buy it, or if you already did, make sure Panasonic doesn't delay you so that your Warranty expires. I will keep you posted as to what I find that is an electronic problem, but I wanted to warn you NOW so others won't waste their money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Battery is AWFUL and phone too complicated
I've had this phone for over a year and the battery life is awful. It has a very short battery life; it will go dead during a conversation even though the handset says it is fully charged. It is also too complicated and scrolls through the menu very slowly.Panasonic's customer service was poor. This phone is a waste of money. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
I purchased this phone from SAM's Club - the one they sell is actually the 2489 which comes w/ an extra handset. The phones have great features, but the handsets are terrible. The sound quality comes and goes and sometimes when you try to turn the phone on it gives you a "system busy" message.

The speakerphone quality is pretty good and feature-wise the phone is great. If you're looking for a good cordless phone, this is not it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money on this phone.I bought the base unit and 2 added extensions. The instructions on the registration of the auxiliary phones omitted several steps. The base phone instructions don't even explain how to use call waiting, a pretty basic function popular since the 80's.Customer service leaves you on hold for 20 minutes, and they can't help you since they have never even seen the phone. They are just reading the same, truncated instructions you are!Maybe VTech should realize that the best advertising is word of mouth.Don't bother with this system.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caller ID?
I liked this phone when I got it but am in the process of sending back the second one I purchased. The caller ID feature works on one line but not on the other. The company's help line was worthless, didn't even know how to turn off call screening.I tried everything they suggested, unplugging, taking out the battery, unplugging other two-line phones in the house that had caller ID, etc.Nothing worked. The company was very good about sending another phone but that one didn't work either. It's a shame because the ability to access the answering machine from the additional handsets was a big plus.

Voice quality was only fair, and I sometimes got a clicking sound when talking on the phone that was annoying to me and the people I was talking to.Still, I would have kept the phone for the ability to access the answer machine, the speaker phone in the base, and the light weight of the handset if it hadn't been for the malfunctioning caller ID.

Update:The company has finally admitted that the caller ID on the second line of the phones just doesn't work. They are trying to fix it and will give me a new phone when they do.In the meantime I am stuck with a phone that doesn't do what I need it to do.I have ordered an AT&T phone system but just learned that AT&T owns V-Tech so this system will probably turn out to have the same problem. It infuriates me that the company knows this is a problem but still sells the phone promising it will show caller ID, and not just on one line!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone system
This is a terrific, well-priced, and reliable phone. Reception is clear, battery life is adequate and it is simple to use. I have tried many, more expensive systems and the v-tech 2 line is the best. Additional phones can be added seamlessly and you do not need an outlet in every room. The answering machine can be acceseed from any handset and the paging functions work quite well. I now have 5 phones using 2 lines on the system and am very pleased.

1-0 out of 5 stars echo, static, poor mic volume
When using the handset there is an intermittent reverberation. When using my plantronics headset, which has performed well for 3 years with a different phone, people complain of poor mic volume and/or static. They keep asking if I am on a cell phone.

Its going back. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing range
I bought this phone essentially for its announced "mega-giga-range" but was majorly disappointed. My old 900Mhz DSS phone has by far a better and longer range.
Other than that the phone is nice and sleek and easy to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expandability is questionable
I bought the previous model (TG5100M) less than a year ago hoping to buy handsets as I need them (I think I looked at "Panasonic for Life" logo for too long). However, both the base AND THE HANDSETS are discontinued now, and new models (TGA520M series) are incompatible with my base. So, while both the base and the handset are working fine, the chances for expandability are now zero... Beware!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Features, Easy to Use
So far, we really like the phone, although we've been noticing some dropouts. (I'm going to switch voice enhancer off and see if that helps.) It was very easy to setup, and the display and handset are backlit, so very easy to read. Comfortable to hold, and on the ear, so if the dropouts stop ... it'll be a keeper.
I was replacing an AT&T 2.4g that we really liked, so I'm hoping this will be a winner. It's great that it came with (2) handsets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Phone System
I recently upgraded this phone from an older Panasonic system for 2 reasons. One, I don't have enough telephone outlets in my home and this system allows me to use the handset on a standard electrical wall outlet. Two, I have a wireless cable modem that might cause interference with the older 2 GHz system.

This unit is great. It is easy to program. The instructions are simple to follow. There are wonderful features without going overboard to include "the kitchen sink".The sound quality on both ends is excellent.I have ordered another handset today that is compatible with this system which includes a clock and a radio for the nightstand.Hurry, order while this telephone is still available. You will be glad that you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, decent reception
I have been looking for a decent cordless phone since my old AT&T 9400 (900 MHz digital spread spectrum) died. That phone sounded just like a corded phone, and I never counted on having problems duplicating that experience. But I did.I tried 900 MHz models, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz of all brands, but there were always too many dead spots and drop outs.

The KX-TG5202 (essentially a KX-TG5200 with an extra handset and charger) fixes that problem. The sound quality is as good as I've heard from any current models, and it even sports a "voice enhancement" technology which, if switched on, makes voices sounds more "realistic."In addition, each handset has a speakerphone, which gets high marks from the people I've called on the phone.

The phone has a black and white display for Caller ID information, and three "soft buttons" which change function depending on the mode the phone is in.It has all basic functionality you'd expect from a $100+ phone (backlighting, phone books, various ring tones, etc.)It doesn't go overboard, however. There is no voice dialing or voice announcement of callers, for example.

All in all, this is a good, solid phone with basic functionality and more than respectable sound quality. If you're not looking for a lot of bells and whistles, you'll love it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, except a little problem with reception
Pros:
-Great distance -- I stroll about 75 feet down the hall of my apartment building, and the phone still works very well, even though it has to go through several walls.
-Volume control is very nice.*
-Answering machine is simple and intuitive -- I never read directions, but put my response on the machine and have used it for nearly a year without a problem. Also, it has the option of turning it off.
-No big antenna to tear off.
-Caller ID -- it works well with a subscription!

Cons:
-occassional interference, although I think it is isolated to where I have the base placed.**

*I am guessing the reviewer below is actually mistaken -- I am guessing the problem is with the phone of the person on the other end.I talk to people that talk very quietly and others who talk very loudly, and the volume control is sufficient to compensate for both.
**I currently have my base placed close to my bed frame and a wall, and there is occassional interference (even in the same room).I previously had the phone only next to a wall and did not have problems with interference then, so I am guessing it is simply the phone base's current location.

Overall, I would recommend this phone for anyone looking for a phone + answering machine for personal or business use.If you are looking for large area coverage (within 100 meters of the base and not going through too many walls), this phone should suffice, and at a good price. In the past I have been pleased with Uniden phones, and I am again pleased with this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Virtually Unusable
This phone is virtually unusable because the volume cannot be turned up loud enough to hear what the person on the other line is saying. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most but....
I bought this phone and 4 handsets 3 weeks ago and have used 2/3 of the features at this point.I had finally grown tired of the horrible battery life on my Panasonic 2.4GHZ KX-TG2730S and had to make the switch.

The Good:
1) Slick phone which is fairly comfortable to hold.
2) Easy to move info between the handsets and a great ability to label your handsets for in-house paging (instead of Handset #1, you can label it Basement).
3) Great battery life so far.The panasonics were going dead within 30 minutes after 2-weeks of usage.
4) No effect on my Wi-Fi set-up.

The Bad:
1) The built-in ring tones are terrible.Lots of choices, unfortunately none are very good. The all sound like bad cell phone ringers.
2) The coverage is so-so.In most areas of my house it is fine, but in some areas that were fine with the 2.4GHZ, the Unidens are iffy.Sometimes good, sometimes not so good.
3) Remote functions.Dialing in to get your messages is brutal. You must dial a zero before each function code and it keeps re-setting my greeting so that I have to either re-record on the fly, or go with no message.Luckily we have Vonage so we usually forward our calls when we are travelling for an extended time, but if you have to dial in to get messages on a frequent basis, you will not be happy.

Mixed:
1) Despite the bad ring tones mentioned above, you can record custom ring tones. The only problem is that you have to actually go in an play a song while the phone physically records it.You can't move an MP3 over and then have it transferred to all handsets automatically.Overall it is a good feature, but not very user friendly.

Overall, it is an improvement over the Panasonic, but the ringtones and the remote dialing are some good size negatives if those are important to you.4 out of 5 stars. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fine, if you have a tiny, flat head
There is no contouring to this phone at all, and the handset is WAY too small and totally flat.I can never have a decent conversation on this phone because when the earpiece is on my ear, the mouthpiece is 2-3 inches away from my mouth.

Also, when I speak, my own voice tends to drown out the person I am talking with.

To top it off, the answering machine always blinks, whether there are messages or not.I have to wonder what they were possibly thinking when they designed such a poor phone. If this were a cell phone I might be a little more forgiving of the handset, but since it is a full sized phone and a rather expensive one I expected much, much better.

As it stands, I am considering buying another phone altogether, this one is so poorly designed. ... Read more
