1-0 out of 5 stars BAD !!!!!!
THIS PHONE SUCKS , YOU CAN HARLY HEAR ON IT AND THE BATTERY LIFE IS TERRIBLE , RINGS ARE LIMITED AND IS AN ALL AROUND A BAD PHONE .

5-0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAT I EXPECTED, has features like your cell phone...
I read the reviews on this phone before buying and was a bit skeptical because of some of the negatives, but took a chance. I work out of my home so a good phone is important to me. So far this phone is more than I expected. (I've had it about 3 weeks)It was the only phone that had everything I was looking for: spread spectrum (for privacy), compactness, large lcd screen, hold function, speakerphone, intercom (didnt think I would use this but it IS handy), and built in phone directory (like my cell phone). I don't even have call waiting but the phone does that too, of course. But even so the phone directory is a real time saver. It holds up to 50 numbers and you scroll up and down. Simplicity is also important to me and I don't like a lot of unnecessary buttons just for show. Vtech kept this one SIMPLE and that is what I like best. The large lcd is nice, back lit, and basically tells you what u need to know. The 3 "softkeys" work like a cell phone and change functions in different menus. I didn't really expect the speakerphone to work well but it sounds better than expected and I do use it, so far with no complaints from callers. Oh, and the belt clip actually works pretty well, unlike some which let the phone slip easily off and onto the floor. NOW, you ask is it as good as a corded phone? Who would expect any compact cordless phone with all these features to have 100% clarity of a corded phone? But the slight difference is far more than compensated by the many advantages offered in this small package. I sometimes use this phone while sitting in front of my desk phone, because of its size and portability! If mine breaks after the warranty, I will just go and buy another handset unless someone else comes up with a better phone for the money, which so far I have not seen. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Stylish as well as convenient, the VTech v2651 2.4 GHz cordless phone offers digital spread spectrum technology, base speakerphones and keypads, caller ID/call waiting capability (if you've subscribed through your local phone company) with 50-name and number caller ID memory, and a 50-name and number phone book directory. Tired of hunting for the handset? A handy page/handset locator ensures that you'll never waste another minute tracking it down.

Use the phone's intercom to make conference calls, and take advantage of smart dialing from caller ID to call people back without having to enter their numbers. Other key features include any-key answer (which saves time in answering when you're in danger of missing a call), backlit keypad and display, mute, and 2.5 mm headset compatibility for hands-free conversations (headset not included).

Digital spread spectrum technology uses a wider bandwidth than standard transmission, casting the data that makes your conversations across multiple frequency points and at greater power than do traditional cordless phones. This increases your phone's range, enhances its immunity to noise and interference, and heightens its ability to prevent eavesdropping.

You can expand the v2651 to include a total of four handsets using only a single, standard phone jack (three additional v2600 handsets not included), and you can station the additional handsets just about anywhere in your home. The included handset and the optional handsets communicate through the base unit and can each function as speakerphones and allow handset-to-handset communication. Each handset offers programmable ringer types.

1-0 out of 5 stars Loved it at first...
But then after about 3 months, the expandable handset stopped charging properly and the charge light didn't come on. I thought maybe I just got a bad phone, so I took it back to the store and exchanged. Wouldn't you know, the next one did the same thing.

There is also a constant low buzzing on the line, which I've never had on my other phones. Also, when you place a number in memory, it only saves to that particular handset, not to any others. My dad's 5.8 GHz Vtech saves the memory numbers to all the expandable handsets.

If I had to do it again, I would not have bought this phone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seems great--but...
I was really pleased with the base/speaker phone when I purchased the original unit.Usually people cannot tell when I am on the handset or the base speakerphone because of the excellent sound quality. But the reason we purchased this unit was to be able to add additional handsets. The sound quality from the second handset is extremely poor. Moreover, sometimes when both handsets are in use that seems to cause both handsets to lose contact with the base and the call is lost.

I don't want any special features on my phone, other than multiple handsets. This phone seems to have a lot of neat futures. If I had designed this, however, I would have dropped some of the features and designed a system which allows the person with whom you are talking to actually understand what you are saying.Maybe you need to buy a more expensive model to get that particular feature.

1-0 out of 5 stars I REALLY hate this phone
I got it for my home office because I really needed a dual-keypad speakerphone. The instructions warn not to put it near electronic equipment and they weren't kidding!First of all, very few real perks to this phone.I like performing all my options from the base, and this simply isn't the phone for that.To use the speed dial, you HAVE TO use the handset speakerphone, which is horribly low in volume (and static-y next to my computer). The base speakerphone is not a whole lot better when it comes to clarity of sound. All things considered, I guess it's worth the $70, but I'm giving it to my teenager because she REALLY wants a speakerphone and won't know the difference.Boo-hiss for this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Phone, nice features. Better than Seimens
This is an above average phone systems with many features of phones twice as much $.It has good sound quality and an extended range feature that improves communications over larger distances than standard 2.4GHz phones. It performs much beter than the Seimens 2415&2400 system that it is replacing.I was actually quite surprised to see a high level of build quality and function in a VTech phone system this cheap. 5.8GHz is not worth the bump in price when this phone performs this well in the city.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice features but poor quality
Even though the box clearly states that this 2.4Ghz phone is "802.11 Friendly", I seem to get interface on this phone anywhere in my home. This is the first 2.4Ghz phone that I've had this problem with. There is no option to switch channels (DSS).There is a constant buzz on the line.

Another absolutely irritating thing is that fact that the dialpad is soo slow and will often miss a number when you dial it in. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cordless Phone I've ever Tested!!!!
Uniden has a winner in this model of TRU446 phone. Clear as a bell on incoming or outgoing audio... I'm getting over a 2000 foot range from my house. My friend purchased a panasonic at over 230.00 and this TRu446 out performs it in every way!!! I highly recommend this phone for price and quality.IS OUTSTANDING!!!!...Received phone in two days shipped standard ups from vendor...

4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden TRU-446 2.4 GHz Cordless Phone
The sound quality and the over all options present an excellent phone for it's price. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good phone
I replaced my panasonic with this uniden because the panasonic was acting up ,it was a 900 mhz digital spread and the uniden is a digital spread also but it operates at the better high 2.4 ghz. so it should have an increased range but it starts to break up at the same distance the panasonic did, perhaps this is because the companies are advertising the frequency they use but not the power output leaving us still somewhat in the dark. I must admit though that the panasonic had a much better range than I thought it would in wich case the uniden seems to have an ok range and this uniden has a lot of features for a phone in this price range including ni-hm batteries that have no memory so you don't have to tell people not to put the phone back in the charger if it doesn't need charging yet, that's a good selling point to me and I would have bought it sooner if they advertised the battery type a little better. And the ni-hms last a long time. So despite the slight if any increase in range over my panasonic the uniden has to many other thing going for it at that price so I have to give it a good raiting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great phone until you use a headset
I agree with the other reviews but when I use a headset, my friends complain that it is hard to hear me, a basic platronics headset with a microphone sensitivity switch set to max was an improvement but not sufficient.I have tested these two headsets with other phones without a problem.Uniden's customer service answer was to try their own headset but I fail to see how that is going to help when it cannot compare to the quality of the Platronics.

3-0 out of 5 stars Digital Spread What? Who? How?
...I shopped around and found that the uniden tru-446 looked to be a good deal at [$$$] for a "digital spread spectrum" (DSS) phone [local store].
The research i went through indicated that the DSS technology was capable of transmitting 4-5 times farther than your basic analog or "plain" digital cordless... [The phone] picks up no better. Works okay otherwise i believe. Looks okay, feels okay. Feels solid. But don't bet on DSS solving your transmission problems over longer distances. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Remember the one about too good to be true....
The IDEA of these phones is a good one - two units, one phone jack, one unit active at a time so no listening in to conversations... but there is something horrid about the reception.Within a couple of months the static got so bad that folks don't want to call our house any more.I'm looking for something else right now and thought i'd warn the others out there to get something else before it's too late.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Reception & Short Battery Life
Having an extra handset and charger certainly seemed like a great idea at the time. In fact, it was the #1 factor in buying these phones. I was confident that they would be of good quality because of a prior good experience with the Uniden brand.

Alas, I'm sorry to report that the range on these phones is woefully substandard. It's literally like being tied down to a regular (corded) phone. The static is absolutely maddening.

Battery life leaves much to be desired. I just got my phones but a friend of mine has been suffering with the same phone for just about a year now and his batteries don't last more than 2 hours. Other users have reported similar problems. Something for me to look forward to, I suppose.

It's worth mentioning that another factor in the decision-making process was that the newer, better 2.4GHz cordless phones were incompatible with my 802.11b wireless internet transceiver. I've been recently informed that's no longer an issue.

And, for what it's worth, the other handset is rendered useless because of the reception issues. Who needs an "extension" that is incapable of "extending." It's like having two phones in the same room. Pointless!

There are much better 900MHz phones out there. Spare yourself the inevitable disappointment and look elsewhere if you need a good cordless phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended - Very bad reception.
Pros:
1. intuitive design and features- I didnt open the manual but but was able to figure out all of the functions and was able to program numbers easily.
2. cost- it's cheap. 2 phones for the price of one.

Cons:
1. Reception- regardless of how near of far I am to the base, I keep getting an annoying buzz sound. It is really irritating when trying to hold a conversation. The buzzing sound comes and goes but it is driving me nuts. The other cordless phones that I own do not have this problem. The basic function of a phone is so that 2 parties can talk to one another. There shouldn't be any static.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of hissing noise
I've had Uniden 900 MHz phones before, they worked fine. This model produces nothing but static as soon as I'm more than 20 feet away from the base. Do not buy it, however cheap it may seem.

This phone will be returned to Amazon this week.

1-0 out of 5 stars I exspected more from Uniden.
I've purchased other Uniden's phones that worked great but this one is junk. I had trouble with reception from the start and had never had a reception problem with any other phones before. The phone then had a habit of disconecting in the middle of a call. The last straw was when the extra headset became useless when nothing worked. It was like it had no battery installed. Checked the battery and nothing was wrong with. The phone went in the garbage as I wasn't going to pay more money on postage.

When the phone did work there was one thing I liked and that was the Rocket Dial feature. Unfortunately it didn't work that often. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice phone, when it works
The main reason my family purchased this phone is that up to 4 interchangeable handsets can be added. It seemed like a brilliant idea, because we could keep handsets all over the house, but not have to match up a different base/charger for each one.

The black and metallic silver (plastic) phone with backlit translucent keys has an attractive, modern-looking design. The handsets are small and sleek. The "mother ship" (main base) has a speakerphone, its own keypad, and intercom/handset locator, while the satellite chargers have no functions other than charging the handset. These satellite chargers are very small and don't require a phone jack, so they're ideal for placing in various locations around the house. The "mother ship" is also space-efficient, in part because all of the chargers position the handsets vertically.

In addition to allowing for a smaller base size, the vertical positioning of the handsets allows easy reading of the caller ID display without picking up the phone, which can be very convenient. We have one handset in the kitchen, and when someone calls during dinner, we can see the caller ID on the phone from a few feet away without getting up from the table. My parents have a handset in their bedroom, and they can see the display, which lights up when a call comes in or when the phone is turned on, from their bed.

The phones were nice -- until we started having problems. One problem is that the buttons on the handset we use most seem to be worn out, particularly the on/off buttons. It now takes a great deal of effort to press them hard enough to pick up or hang up the phone.

The most frustrating problem, though, is that the handsets frequently "lose" the base, which occurs, on average, a few times per week.It happens either when someone turns on the phone to make a call or tries to answer the ringing phone, and sometimes just randomly in the middle of a call! All of a sudden, the phone beeps obnoxiously and the display says, "Searching for base."The phone is then completely useless for about 15 seconds, and then goes back to normal, but not until after the call is dropped or missed. The worst part is that it often happens when the phone is just a few feet away from the base, prompting my mom to yell at the handset, "The base is RIGHT THERE!Why can't you see it, you idiot?"

I have been disappointed in the quality of this phone, especially since it was fairly expensive.Due to the reliability issues my family has had with this phone, I would not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cordless fan
I've had this phone for 1+ years with no problems. I expanded it to 4 handsets, but ultimately needed at least 5 in the house. I can make/receive calls on the handset even when I'm nearly 1,000 feet away from the house (residential neighborhood). I bought a VTech i5881 (2.4/5.88GHz) expandable w/ answer machine to go to 5 phones (5 or 6 if you count the base speakerphone). It doesn't have interference problems with the 2430, the controls are all familiar, and the i5881 can go to 6 phones. I can't imagine needing 10 phones, but between the 2430 and the i5881 I could. Other than the 4 handset limit for the 2430, I'd recommend it highly -- get the extra battery for the base so you have a spare for handsets and the base will function during power outages. BTW, my 2430 replaced a Siemens 2400 expandable. It was hopeless (bad reception, confusing controls, poor battery life when it actually did try to charge and literally 15-20 minutes when it decided (arbitrarily) to not bother charging even though the handset was in the cradle. I'd never buy another Siemens, but VTech hasn't let me down yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drops incoming calls
The design and features of this phone aren't bad.It seemed like a good value at the time. But having had it for a while now I've become dissappointed. The sound quality is not very good.Sound is not clear with a constant background hissing static. And the volume is low even at max volume. But the most significant problem with this phone is that it drops about 30-40% of the incoming calls when you answer them. You press the button to answer and the handset starts searching for the base unit, dropping the call.Problem exists on all my handsets. Will not buy VTech again, as I've heard others complain of same problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up.
Just hooked up my new Vtech phone and so far it's great. Nice and clear sounding and very lightweight. I love the handsfree button on the handset. (So if I'm listening to elevator music on hold, I don't have to crush my ear while waiting. I can hook it to my belt and walk around the house.) The only negative thing so far is that with 2 handsets, I had to program numbers in individually, which took forever! I added 38 numbers (so double that). But it's worth it since my old phone only allowed me 10 programmable numbers, not 50 like the VTech! (I wish there was a way to program all cell & landline phones from our own individual master list, so we wouldn't have to enter in each number and name again and again; maybe in the next generation?!) I also find the sickly-looking green display a little "dated," but I can live with it. I like the intercom button ...almost like having a walkie talkie between up & downstairs. The convenience of having two cordless phones in the house is great! And I love how they take up less space than my old phone. I took it next door with me, and the range is great, too! So I won't miss a call if I'm outside. So far I love this phone, but I just got it...I hope I'm not disappointed in the months/years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Features, Great Longevity!
I've had this phone for about a year now.

What I like:
-Great sound quality
-Excellent range
-Very usable speakerphone on base AND handset
-Additional handsets available
-Backup battery available so that when you lose power, you still have phone. Not only that, but you can use the backup battery in the handset if you deplete that one.
-Headset plug. (I use the headset that came w/ my Motorola cell phone and it works great!)
-Caller ID

What I don't like
-Since it's tapered at the top, it's difficult to cradle the handset between your ear and shoulder.I've dropped it several times.
-When you page the phone from the base station (like to find where you left it last), you have to punch just the right key combination to make it stop paging.
-The wall mount bracket is rather cheaply made. One of the tabs broke off right away, but it still mounts fairly solidly.

In summary...I like this phone a lot.I bought the extra handset and extra battery for the base.I've had some serious power fluxuations in my house recently that caused the phone to stop ringing correctly, and I plan to buy another one just like it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking?
5.8GHz is a *requirement* if you use WiFi (802.11a/b/g) in your house or if you have other wireless technologies that typically get garbled when the 900MHz or 2.4GHz phones are used.I have had absolutely NO reception troubles in my 3300 sqft house and the clarity is superb.

The phone's looks are top-notch.Black and silver is a very slick look for a modern household.Might look a little funny if you're style is country or traditional.

Caller ID works well and the 2-line display is very helpful.Voicemail indicator is also nice.

The biggest surprise feature for me was the speakerphone in the handset! I've used this several times (it's great when you're on hold somewhere or when you need several people to talk at once) and love it!

I was happy with the menu navigation, although I thought they could have offered more features (like... perhaps the ability to control the volume of that LOUD, annoying beeping every time you press a button). The menu seemed sparse to me.

My biggest two gripes with this phone are not petty and not trivial at all. They are showstoppers, in my opinion.

(1) The phone will NOT work well in states that require 10-digit dialing and a +1 in order to dial in-state.In Michigan, for example, I have to dial 1-248-555-1212 to call my neighbor (ok, so that's information, I digress).

Putting My Neighbor in the phone book as 248-555-1212 results in:
- The inbound works fine (caller ID shows up, custom rings sound if set)
- BUT you cannot dial using the phone book or caller ID redial. This is because both will try to dial 248-555-1212, which will not work! Our phone system requires 1-248-555-1212 to be dialed. There is NO setting for this on the phone.

If you think you can be sneaky (like I did) and set the phone book entry to be 1-248-555-1212, then:
- You can call with the phone book, BUT
- Inbound services don't work (no custom rings) and you STILL can't redial them from the caller ID.

In effect, if you live in a state that has converted to full 10-digit dialing and a 1 is required to dial 10 digits, don't bother with this phone. It's slick, but it's unforgiveable that the engineers missed that one considering the first phone I bought myself in 1985 had this capability.Yay, progress!

4-0 out of 5 stars welcome to the latest band available for phone communication
The new 5.8 gigahertz band has only been available for phone use very recently. The higher band means less interference from many household appliances and even other phones using the same band.

I bought this as a replacement phone for another brand of phone that died. I am very pleased with the sound and distance quality. Supposedly, you can be up to a mile away and still connect, but I have not tested this. I have been able to be in my backyard (my phone base is in a room at the front of the house) at a distance of over 50 feet (I know how far my garden hose will reach) without degredation of quality.

Not only does the base allow near full-duplexing quality speaker phone, the handset is also capable as a stand-alone speaker phone.

The new band means a shorter antenna length is needed, so the antenna is almost invisible.

There is an audio phono jack on the side to accommodate a 1/8" handsfree head/ear set, but such a device is sold separately.

My biggest gripe with this phone is the ridiculously short belt clip. It is literally only 1" long, which means all you have to do is bend over and the phone drops. If they provided at least a 2" long clip or one w/ a spring that would grab a belt or fabric, that would have been preferable.

Another gripe is the so-called "custom ring" feature. I enable the custom ring, but the regular ring is still just as loud, but rings in tandem with a little tune - quite annoying.

Also annoying is the 4-clicks to delete a record from the caller ID. The phone is feature-packed with menu buttons, but not too intuitive - you really need to read the manual thoroughly to know what does what.

The mute button on the base is great, and there is one on the handset as well.

You can save number in a "rocket dial" directory for speedy dialing.

The talk button is also the flash button, so there is a separate button labeled "end" for terminating a connection.

The unit will support one additional handset in tandem w/ one in the base station which is a nice feature that not all phones have. I'm saving up to get the additional handset so I can have one in my kitchen.

There is a light in the handset that is supposed to illuminate when you have new voice mail, but my light has never come on, even when I have voicemail waiting for me... also a bummer that gives this phone a less than perfect rating. All in all, though, I must say this is one of the best portable phones I have ever used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone!
I have had this phone for over six months and I think it is just terrific. The handsets with built-in speakerphones work great, although I have not used them often as I tend to think speakerphones are rude.In fact, I have been so happy that I purchased additional handsets and placed them all over the house.I have also purchased several sets as gifts and everyone that has received them have appreciated their clarity and ease of use.

While I understand a few others have been disappointed, my experience has been quite the opposite.I simply think this phone is simply great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this phone strictly because of the Uniden reputation. It was to replace my 6 year old Panasonic which was missing its antenna and still worked somewhat decent.

Within a 30 foot radius of the base the Uniden sounded excellent and it's features such as distinct ring and phone book were very impressive. But as soon as I walked beyond 30 feet the phone would completely cut out and I would have to run back to let the caller know I didn't hang up.I was shocked and disappointed that this happened to a 5.8 gigahertz Uniden and attempted to solve the problem by reading the instructions fully and relocating the base but nothing worked.(Yes I scanned all the channels manually and automatically without improvement.)

I decided to return it instead of an exchange because I felt with such clarity within 30 feet and such poor performance beyond that, that it was not a lemon but just a poorly made phone.Another reason I believed it to be a quality problem is because I had a similar experience with Panasonic.Their older phones worked spectacular but the new models are garbage too.I don't know if this is a sign that companies feel they can produce cheaper quality products and sell them due to their past reputation and get away with it or just a strange coincidence. For now it's back to the Panasonic without an antenna.

This was my experience, hopefully yours is different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
The guy posting below MUST have gotten a lemon. This phone has great reception and sound quality.PLUS, this is THE ONLY TRUE 5.8GHz phone on the market. The VTech he loves and the AT&T ones transmit 5.8 GHz tothe handset, but the handset transmits back at 2.4GHz.You don't hear the clicks from a wireless network interfering, but your calling party does. And it still slows down the wifi connected computers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still a great phone!
Well I've owned the Uniden TRU-448 2.4GHz DSS cordless phone system for 2 and a half years now and it still works as well as the day I bought it.That in and of itself says a lot, considering that prior to buying this phone, I went through about 8 others in a year's time.

The sound quality is extremely clear for a surprisingly great distance away from the base unit and the digital answering system is great for screening calls (you can use a pre-recorded digital voice instead of recording your own message, if you so desire) and can be set up so that you can check your messages remotely using a self-programmed 3-digit security code. The speakerphone works flawlessly and the programmable features are easy to set-up as explained in the manual. It has a comfortable ergonomic design, is compatible with most standard headsets and has useful features like programmable speed-dial and variable ring-tones. It is also surprisingly sturdy for such a lightweight piece of equipment as I have accidentally dropped it a few times and it has suffered no adverse effects (though I don't recommend testing this intentionally).

Of course, it has all of the standard features like caller ID with call waiting, flash, redial, light-up keys, volume settings, etc.For me, the biggest selling point was the ability to add-on additional phones in other locations of your home or office without the need for more phone jacks. All you need is an electrical outlet where you want your additional handset(s) and you are good to go! Saves you having to call the phone company to install more phone jacks, as long as the "homebase" unit is plugged into a live phone jack. Less cables and junk to have to hide!

Couple of cons: Don't hold this phone between the head and shoulder - you may actually accidentally hang up on the party at the other end - I have done this numerous times (guess that's what the headset is for!).Also, the 'end' button, which is used to hang up or end a (programming) process, is miniscule (even by my standards, and I have small hands). It should have been designed larger, or the talk button should be a toggle button, as with most cordless phone systems.People who are used to the toggle systems for answering and hanging up may try that a few times with this phone only to come back to it later and realize that the phone is off the hook.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very good phone
The most I like about this phone are the sound clarity, ease of use, and size. While talking from a good distance from the receiver, I've had not problem with sound. The only think I get is good quality sound.I don't miss anything what other people say.

Two things I dislike about this phone are the end botton, and the words on or below bottons.First, the end botton is fairly small. If you miss pressing it after you've done talking, which I have done several times, the phone will continue to be on and no one else can call you.So, very careful with this button. The words fade very rapidly if your not careful.I had my phone for 9 months now, and almost all the words are erased. This is all from normal usage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone/Answering Machine
At first, I was disappointed, until I realized that I had plugged it into the DSL outlet. When I finally hooked it up correctly, it worked great. The digital answering machine sounds clear. The phone sounds great from anywhere in the house.Haven't tested it outside yet (too cold).I've been updating the built-in phone book through the caller-id function...very convenient (don't have to type everyone's name and phone number in).Good stuff.I also like setting different rings for various people in the built-in phone book.Locals I have set for one ring, long distance set for another.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think!
I just bought a different brand name and it was not worth it. You can hear yourself talking back into the phone and it has static. I will not pay that kind of money for a digital phone. I just read in the sunday paper that digital phones are not worth it and have alot of problems! I returned that phone and will stick with the phone I have!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy
Wife hates it..we have had trouble with signal breaking up and static on transmission.Contacted Uniden repair and they said to move to new location..easy said but not convenient to us.

Micro Wave seems to drive it nuts.I guess it would work fine if used in the front yard. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Siemens Gigaset 2402 2.4 GHz cordless phone is an expandable cordless phone system designed to meet the needs of a busy home or small office. With 2.4 GHz operation and ADPCM digital voice encoding, this phone provides clear reception. Frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology ensures that your calls are secure from eavesdropping, by randomly changing the frequency at which the signal is transmitted over 100 times per second.

The basic system includes a two-line desk and wall-mountable compact base unit, cordless handset, handset charger, cords, batteries, and manuals. The handset is slim, lightweight, and allows you to use it as an intercom with other handsets. It has an internal antenna, a backlit graphical display for caller ID information, and a headset jack. Along with the caller ID information, the base stores a 120-entry call directory; both are accessible from the handset (or from optional additional handsets). The desk- and wall-mountable charger includes LED indicators, charges a spare set of ni-cad or NiMH AA rechargeable batteries in a separate compartment, and recharges the handset.

The Siemens Gigaset 2402 2.4 GHz cordless phone can work with up to eight handsets (Siemens model 2400). Each cordless handset offers its own extension number and programmable ringing tones. You can program handsets to use line one, two, or both; and they support conference calls, call transfer, intercom, and page features. You can use up to four of the eight handsets at the same time, and it's possible to have up to three separate simultaneous conversations. This phone lets you call outside parties, make internal handset-to-handset calls, and page. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What Absolute Garbage
I purchased a Siemens Gigaset 2.4 GHz Phone for about $279 + tax expecting a quality product, and was perplexed when I repeatedly faded out when talking. The callers could not hear me but I could hear them. This made the phone unusable. So I returned the phone to the dealer and got another identical unit that had exactly the same problem.I was convinced on the phone by Siemens tech support that there must be problem with the wiring in my house - even though I am an electrical engineer and should have known better.I later found that the phone did not work at another location, and thus that the problem was with the two shoddily designed Siemens phones all along.Siemens was unresponsive to my complaints. What absolute garbage.I will NEVER purchase another Siemens product.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a pity!
The Siemens system is designed very straightforwardly, solid, and works amazingly well - if it works.

We have had two handsets in this series, and both of them occasionally have one-way communication problems: you can hear the other end just fine, but they can only hear every second word. Apparently, you don't fade out, you just drop out.

I called Siemens and was lucky that the phone failed during the service call. To add insult to injury, they were annoyed with me and told me to use another phone. Their service is hopeless.

What a pity, this could be a great phone system! I wonder if the 5.8 GHz systems are
any better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Seimens Gigaset 2402 is Total crap!
I've had this phone for two years. Since day one I have had trouble with the audio "warbling" on both receive and transmit making it it nearly impossible to understand the caller. I have had Seimens replace both the base and the handset twice (I had to forcefully press them them to exchange anything). The problem seems inherent in this phone's design. The unit is not near any microwave or any other transmitter. I can stand 2 feet from the base and the problem persists. Strangely, when I slap the handset in my palm sharply the sound clears up for a few seconds.

Seimens support is as terrible as the phone. They refused to refund my money after swapping out the entire phone twice. So I am forced to live with a $300 phone that drives my wife crazy.

I will never buy any product made by Seimens again.

1-0 out of 5 stars junk
I purchased a Siemens base phone and 5 cordless phones. Within 6 months 3 of the 5 phones had garbled transmissions which made them unusable. Siemens support says "too bad" we only service warranty items, just buy new phones. What crap! Horrible product from a company that is even worse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Siemens 2400,2402,2415,2420 2.4 GHz Two-Line Gigaset Repair
The Siemens 2400 series Gigaset system is a fine system to use for small businesses, home offices, and I use it so the I can move around my ranch, and always be in communication with the house and the outside world.

Unfortunately, each handset and base have an inherent problem that causes audio problems where the recieve and transmit are garbled and make a sound that has been described as warbling or fading in and out.

These defects can be corrected by sending your unit to Barclay Enterprises Inc. 2275 LaCrosse Ave. Suite 201 in Colton, California 92324, and they will refurbish and upgrade your units for less than the replacement costs.

A few units do end up being "uneconomical for repair" due to some defects and Siemens inability to provide a distribution path for replacement parts.

Nevertheless, Barclay can also provides an exchange program so if the worse case scenerio arises where your unit cannot be repaired, they can provide a replacement for a nomiminal surcharge.

Your Siemens 2400 gigaset should last many years if you protect it from the environment and physical damage. But if a defect should arise with your 2400 handset or any of the base units, these guys can take care of you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Battery life is Horrendous
We have had these phones for about 2.5 years with 2 different base systems as we have 2 different business lines coming in and then our residence line. The battery on ALL of the phones (3 total cordless phones) is HORRIBLE.The longest it lasts is 20-30 minutes which is a good day and 5 minutes on a bad day.On some of the expandable headsets they even hang up without warning, definately not a good thing when you are on a business call.We even bought another battery and that didn't work.We are looking into replacing the whole system with another at this time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect? No, but does the trick.
I think when you pay a lot for a state-of-the-art home phone system, you expect a lot.I did when I bought this phone. Is it perfrect? No.Is it serviceable and useful? An emphatic yes!

It gives a very flexible capability to manage two or less telephone lines over a wide physical distance.Three mailboxes with external access are great for large or small families.Sound quality is excellent.I love the speakerphone on the base and each handset. The distinctive ringers for each line let me ignore inbound calls on my outbound line (they're all telemarketers) completely. In short, my life improved for buying this system.

Shortcomings?Here goes:

Battery life on handset batteries is poor with the factory batteries. It may have gotten better in the year since I bought it.My solution has been to simply bite the bullet, go to Circuit City, and buy non-Panasonic replacement batteries for each handset.Problem solved.

When you are on a line and a call comes in on that line, the caller gets a busy signal. Can''t modern science find a way to ship that call directly to the digital answering machine?

Only 15 minutes of available time on the digital answerer. This is simultaneously a blessing and a curse. You can legitimately instruct callers to "leave a brief message" and cut them off at the one minute mark.

Only 50 slots for your directory.Given that this phone is intended to manage up to 8 phones on two lines, Panasonic should have given at least 200 slots.By being clever, you can have 50 slots per phone (i.e., up to 400 numbers) but that defeats one of the sweetest features of this system, which is to swap listings ("copy") from phone to phone.Hey Panasonic -- why not allow the user to create multiple listings for each name, like most cell phone directories now do?This would be a perfectly applicable way to increase the storage in this unit.

The unit is complex to learn initially, but not as bad as some.

In summary, this is an improvement over my previous phone "system," and has allowed me to forego the monthly $7.95 voice mail charge from my local carrier.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many problems
I bought this model with an extra handset because I got a good price on it and didn't need an answering machine. While the reception was fine (only reason for 2 stars and not 1), I could never get it to work properly...first, the second line indicator light wouldn't go off even when the phone wasn't in use. I wasted hours and hours on the phone with Panasonic customer service and trying different hook ups. I got conflicting advice as well as incorrect information about connections.
I was connecting an answering machine and through that a fax. I had it working fine except for the annoying second light problem, tried a suggested fix and then the second (fax) line would only ring through the fax machine, and no signals were sent to the other handset. After a fyet for a lower price), plugged it in and have had no problems since.
Panasonic's customer service was lousy. I emaileda question the first day, and it took 4-5 days to get a form response that didn't answer the equestion.
While one rep was very helpful, trying to get answers from other reps when she couldn't answer my questions, she referred the problem to someone who was supposed to call me back. That didn't happen for 3-4 days, by which time I had returned the phone. Plus the reply left on my answering machine would have been of no help at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Phone I've ever had
Best phone I've ever had. Love the caller id - return call feature and the ability to one button edit whether or not the number needs a "1", area code only or 7 digit local. You can also add the caller id number to your speed dial directory! We also like the battery indicator (like a cell phone has) on the handsets. Without old units we had, you were never quite sure when the battery was about to die until it started beeping in your ear.

We also run a Microsoft wireless computer network and have no issues with the signals conflicting even thought they are both 2.4 gHz devices.

The speaker phone and handset quality are excellent.

I would recommend this phone strongly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But I Still Want Better
A nice system overall, but not nearly perfect. We purchased a set of these to replace our burnt out Siemens Gigaset 2402 system. While we were happy to have something that worked... the features and design of this system leave much to be desired. Numerous minor inconveniences and awkwardnesses make these phones less than they could be--nothing major, and perhaps only noticeable when compared with the excellently designed Siemens phones (really nothing more than the difference between Japanese and German design).

Two features stand out in comparison with our retired Siemens phones, one negative and one positive. On the positive side, these phones support detection of voice messages on an existing message system, so that it is easy to see from any handset whether there are unplayed messages on either line. On the negative side, the system does not support handset naming. We imagined this would be a minor inconvenience when we bought the phones, but it has proved to be a major drawback: there's simply no way to get the entire family to learn what number goes with what phone. When we had the Siemens system, which supports handset naming, the we had a working intercom system (not to mention convenient transfers of calls); now we're back to shouting

UPDATE: After over a year of use this product is still going strong. Excellent reliability earns an additional star over my initial review. Much more reliable than comparable Siemens systems. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst phone ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really hate this phone. I've bought the basic $19.99 GE special (in black or white)in the past and those phones, sad to say, are much better than this one. This phone is nearly impossible to program. It is awkwardly shaped and slippery so I am constantly dropping it. You have to monitor the battery constantly because the thing always dies in mid-conversation. It also cuts out -- just goes dead sometimes - for no apparent reason. It also makes an awful chirping sound when returned to the cradle or when it rings. The keys are SO sensitive that it is nearlyimpossible to even enter numbers or letters. Alas, it seems like my spotted history with this device might be over. It died on me today after a year of ownership. I replaced the batteries. The thing is still dead.

1-0 out of 5 stars DONT BUY THIS PHONE
EVENTHOUGH THEY HAVE A HELPFUL TECHNICAL AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT DEPARTMENT IN SIEMENS, THIS PHONE IS WORTHLESS FROM A TO Z. I HAD TO CHANGE MINE TWICE IN A VERY SHORT TIME. NOW, MY THIRD PHONE IS MALFUNCTIONING. THIS PHONE IS NOT WORTH IT. DON'T SPEND YOUR MONEY ON THIS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst phone I have ever owned
This phone is so poorly designed that I have nothing positive to say about it except that it is small. It rings very annoyingly and chirps loudly for no reason when you do something like simply hanging it up - try hanging up the phone while someone is sleeping in the next room, and you'll have problems. It has an incomprehensible menu, and the handset goes dead when it runs out of battery charge without any warning. That's the only time it DOESN'T make any noise. It runs out of batteries very quickly, so this happens often. You won't see all of these irritating features until you actually get your hands on this phone after purchase, so don't waste your time or money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Simplicity
This phone is the most complicated phone I have ever seen. The menu is incomprehensible, with options which are abrieviated so much that you can't tell what you're choosing. The Siemens 4210, on the other hand, is much simpler to use and doesn't have an obnoxious ringer like this phone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad purchase!
I purchased this phone to replace my old-faithful AT&T 900 mhz cordless phone. I was getting a lot static with it for reasons unknown to me -- it worked flawlessly for over two years until recent weeks.

I am happy to report that I don't have the same problem with Siemens 4010. I consider it a good purchase because I benefited from the [money] rebate to bring the price down to a reasonable [money]...

I disliked the fact that there is no easy way to adjust the handset volume or put it on mute quickly during a call. The navigation is a bit counter-intuitive because I am used to Motorola and Nokia cell phones. I also would have like to see the speaker feature on the 4000 handset. I ended up purchasing the 4200 so I can have one speaker phone. I felt I overpaid for the 4200 because many of the features are not compatible with the 4010 base unit. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Is it my luck?
The phone has a lot of features, slick design and other extras that other phones dont. However, unfortunately I never had a chance to use it, since it arrived defective. The battery would not charge at all. I had to return it for a refund. I dont think I am going to consider buying another Siemens phone again. I would rate their customer service support 7 on the rate from 1-10 with 10 being the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best phone for the money
Great phone for the money. Big sound improvements over the old 4100 series, very easy menu and phonebook management if one is used to cell phones. I use Siemens triband cell phone and for me switch to Gigaset was seamless. Siemens does have more superior design and user interface than Panasonic. The rest of features are a matter of taste and personal preferences, such as sound which is very natural in Siemens, cell phone like operations and size. Stay away from 3501 if you are used holding your phone between your head and a shoulder. Also, do not pay more than 99 dollars as even Siemens website sells it in US for under a hundred.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent full featured phone with some usability problems
The SL3501 is the upgrade to the Siemens 4215 series and carries over most of the 42XX series characteristics. The upgrade solves some of the 4215 issues but gives it the one thing it really didn't need, a smaller handset. I've owned the 4215 for about 2 years. When the base died, I started shopping for another phone. The T3501 was attractive because I could use my two 4200 handsets. However there were a lot of things I didn't like about the 4215, so I shopped around purchasing a total 3 different phones before coming back to the Siemens.

Here's how the 4215 compares to the SL3501:

Sound quality -The 4200 handsets have excellent sound quality, perhaps too good.Siemens choose not aggressively filter out the higher frequency range, so you clearly hear the background hiss inherent in any wireless device. They have nicely corrected this in the SL30 (the included handset). You can hear some background noise, but not a lot. They had to sacrifice some high frequency but the result is a more balanced sound with less noise.A worthy trade off.

Head set jack - An inexcusable omission on the 4200 has been corrected in the SL30.However, it's a proprietary jack for Siemens headsets only. They soften the blow by including an ear bud type headset. For around the house, I much prefer the full size headset with a boom mic.The included headset is functional but I could never get it loud enough or find a comfortable spot in my ear.

Answering Machine Voice Quality - The 4215 answering machine has some of the worst sound quality I have ever heard. There are 2 quality settings, both are pretty bad. The SL3501 improves the quality, but only a little bit.Siemens still lags behind Panasonic and others in this area.

Easy Access to volume - To access the volume control, it's a multi key stroke operation that requires you view the display. This makes it pretty impractical to use while on a call.Sadly this is just the same on the SL30.Two small buttons on the side of the phone would have solved this, URGH!

Base, what Base? - The 4215 base was already pretty small and discrete. Plus it doubled as handset charger.Since accessing the base was all performed through the hand set, there were no controls on the base.In the SL3501 they have taken this one step further and separated the base from the handset charger.Like the 4215 there are no controls on the base (expect page and handset registration) so the base can be placed discretely out of site, or centrally located for better reception. While this is nice, it contrasts with many other phones where the base serves and primary location for access to messages as well as serving as a speakerphone. The Panasonic 5.8 has a particularly nice base which really adds a lot to their over all package.

The Competition

As I mentioned, I tested 3 other phones which were the Panasonic 5.8ghz, AT&T 5.8, Motorola 2ghz.Of these, the Panasonic as was the clear winner. The AT&T was nice, but there was bad echo on all calls. Plus I could never get the speaker quite loud enough. The Motorola was not even close. The sound quality was horrible and the directory could not easily be transferred between phones.

Comparing the Panasonic to the SL3501

Sound - The Panasonic has exceptional sound. Like the SL30 the higher frequencies are trimmed back to cut the background noise. However it's more noticeable on the Panasonic. To my ear, the Siemens does a better job handling the hiss, while still retaining some higher frequency. But I'd have to give the Panasonic the nod for overall sound quality which is richer and fuller. The larger handset probably helps this by giving the speaker some "cabinet space".

Speaker Phone - Sorry, but the SL30 speaker phone is not that good. It's not very loud and gets choppy when there's ambient noise in the room. The speaker phone on the 4200 is better. The Panasonic's speaker phone is still better yet. It's loud and clear.

Access to the Dialing Directory

On the Panasonic you access the directory with omni dial, which requires 2 separate steps (down, then right). Most of the time, I got it wrong resulting in 5-8 button presses just to get to the directory. On the Siemens its one button and you are there, much easier!

Voice Messages and Caller ID

On the Siemens, there is a small red flashing LED that signals either messages or calls have been received. You access the call log and the messages with one button.Reviewing the messages and calls clears the flashing LED for all phones. On the Panasonic, the messages are indicated by a small flashing number on the display and a flashing LED on the base.If you are only looking at the handset you could miss it.The caller ID calls are all handled individually by the base and the handsets. If you answer the call on one handset, all the others mark it as "missed call". You have to clear the "missed" calls on all the handsets individually otherwise each handset always indicates that new caller ID calls have come in, even if they were answered or cleared on another handset. This makes the "new call" indication pretty much useless. Also, the Panasonic doesn't lookup the caller ID numbers to the names listed in the directory. The Siemens does this which is particularly useful for cellular callers where the name is listed as "wireless".

Summary

The SL3501 is a nice upgrade to the 4215. Many will find the handset too small, but fully functional. It has great sound, rich features and performs well.It has excellent integration with caller ID and the messages making more a phone "system" rather than a phone/answering machine combo.Sadly the German engineers didn't fix the 4200's usability issues and still haven't added a standard headset jack.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great phone system for the houseshold
This is a great phone system for the household. The two-way speakerphone is of a superlative quality, the included headset makes for a nice handsfree experience when walking around, and the Direct Inward Dialing (DID) feature is great for callers to locate the exact person they are trying to reach in the household. The only thing I don't like is that if you have call waiting, you must hit the "MEM" button to switch back and forth between calls, rather than hitting the "Talk" button. This seems a bit odd to me, and this information is nowhere to be found in the owner's manual...I had to call Customer Service to find out about this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone!
I bought this version of the Uniden, then added the extra handset. You can also buy the TRU8865-2 which would offer the same package. In any event, I've been very happy.Good sound quality, great features, no wireless interference. Not sure if the 5.8GHZ technology is the real deal (I went back and forth between the 2.4 and 5.8 but realized this was the "wave of the future" and so went for it) but the phone is solid and sweet.

Plus features:
Direct link between phones (they function as walkie talkies)
Phonebook sync (from one handset to another)
Baby monitor function (what a great idea!)
Message waiting indicator light (rather than displayed on handset)

Minus:
None so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PHONE!
I have to say I really love this phone... no problems what so ever. The distance is great; we haven't had any problems with reception within the house or outside it. Nice display with caller id. Buttons work great and the phone fits nicely into your hand. The only thing that I do suggest is that you do read the description...Extra Caller ID Handset and Charger Included, it means as well as the base set wiih caller id, you also receive the handset and charger.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe description!!!!
The description says that this item includes an extra handset and charger. It didn't come with one. When I contacted customer service I was told that it was a misunderstanding on MY PART!!!! I have tried to escallate the issue and have not received a response. I will update if they ever decide to contact me. ... Read more
