2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible reception
I bought this model on sale at a local store.... I liked the features, but the reception (sound quality) was terrible, a lot of static.
It is way worse than in a 900MHz phone that I have, the type one can now buy for $9.99.
Needless to say I returned the phone and now I am looking for a better one.

2-0 out of 5 stars FAIR AT BEST
1. CALLER I.D.: The first reviewer was correct! The caller I.D. is messed up! It does NOT show you the calls in order! It'll tell you ie. 3 new calls, but if they've called you in the past, you have to scroll thru all the phone numbers and look at dates & times that people called. THIS IS HORRIBLE! What takes 2 seconds on most phones takes you several minutes to do with this phone. I want to know who the new calls are right NOW, not in 10 minutes after tremendous eye stress trying to scroll thru 50 numbers to see who was a new caller.

2. MEMORY: There's only room for 50 numbers in memory, not 99 as I read (I believe on Amazon).

3. SOUND: The speakerphone is outstanding, one of the best I've heard yet! In addition, people said they can hear me very well. Lastly, the handset is also good quality.

SUMMARY! While the speakerphone was great, I did return this phone. I simply cannot live with the stupidity of the way this caller I.D. works! Thank you!

2-0 out of 5 stars great features - poor performance
On the good side: this phone has an amazing array of features at a reasonable price.
On the bad side: the range is TERRIBLE. If I go to the next room, less than 15 ft away with no source of interference, I start hearing annoying clicking sounds.Sometimes this even happens when I'm right next to the phone. If I go outside, still only 20 or 30 ft away, the phone stops working completely. Now, I happen to have aluminum siding, which the manual warns about, but, EVERY other cordless I have owned worked just fine outside for 300 - 500 ft, at least several houses away.
Another minor annoyance:For some bizarre reason, reviewing the caller ID memory does NOT show the calls in the order that they were received.I have to press the review button maybe twenty times to see who the last caller was.I dunno. maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Bottom line: Avoid this phone. I do not recommend it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Olympia OL 2490 cordless phone offers the security of 2.4 GHz DSS technology, an integrated digital answering system, plus options for future system expansion. Able to accommodate a total of four cordless handsets, the OL 2490 comes bundled with two to get you started. Each handset offers convenient caller ID capability with 20 name-and-number memory, and a three-line backlit LCD in your choice of English, Spanish, or French that displays all call information.

The built-in digital answering system offers three individual mailboxes, perfect for small businesses or busy households. Separate mailboxes give users an added degree of privacy and the security of knowing that their messages won't be accidentally erased by another user. The system can save up to 50 messages, with 15 minutes of recording time (total).

One of the benefits of todays expandable 2.4 GHz systems is that individual handset extensions do not require a phone jack. Just plug the accompanying AC adapters into a standard power outlet and, in the case of the OL 2490 system, the handset units will initialize themselves to the systems base within 30 seconds, without the need for a wired connection or complicated programming. Once fully connected and initialized, the OL 2490 also allows handsets to operate as an intercom, with up to two two-way intercom connections happening simultaneously.

Additional call features include three-way conferencing, programmable ring tones, last five number redial, headset and hearing aid compatibility, and more. The OL2490 comes with everything you'll need to get started, including switchable face-plates for the handsets.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good value- some quirks that may or may not bother you
All features worked well, but I found it noisier than my 900MHz phone (a common complaint for 2.4GHz phones). The phone/hangup switch is kind of easy to press on your face when talking, and it only accepts 10-digit numbers in the phone book (might be a problem with your carrier, might not). Also, can't adjust ring volume for base- its either loud or off.Again, might not be a problem if your normally keep a handset in the area of the base.Good recording/playback quality. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst phone ever seen
This is the most painful phone I ever had.The battery never charges completely. Keeps getting out of service errors. Phone died in first week.Got a replacement and had the same issue.I have seen big rack of the same phones returned by other customers in the local retail store.

1-0 out of 5 stars Annoying problems with these phones
Bought this two-phone package about 18 months ago and they have not worked properly for over a year. The displays on both handsets died slow, painful deaths, one pixel at a time, over the space of several weeks. This renders the caller ID feature useless and you can't see what number your calling as you hit the keypad. The people at the other end of the phone repeatedly complain of random beeps coming from my end - highly annoying! These phones are cheap for a reason. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this model!Total Disappointment
Looks Great - Feels Good - Didn't Last!As stated from other reviews - poor reception, clicking sounds.Confusing Caller Id format. (Not to mention extremely small display window)And after 1 year of gentle use, on one of the handsets, the 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5, buttons no longer functions. What a waste! Avoid at all costs!

1-0 out of 5 stars a waste of money
I bought this dual handset cordless phone when my Sony cordless died. This phone has numerous problems. First, there is a really annoying echo that comes and goes when using this phone. The "1" button on one of the phones has now died, and the caller id is confusing. Instead of registering the calls in order to review later, you can only review the phone numbers of callers who are not already stored in the caller id memory, and the caller id memory is not even in chronological order by date. I am never buying a GE phone again.

4-0 out of 5 stars There are far worse out there
I just got this after having a HORRIBLE system from Bell Phones. For the money, it's not bad.In response to some other reviewers, no, it doesn't automaticaly add a "1" before a long distance number if you're returning a number from the caller id.However, all you have to do is press the "format" button while viewing the number, and the "1" is added. This is good for someone like me, who lives in an area where I always have to dial the area code when calling anyone (even within my own area code)I only have to dial a "1" when someone is far away (and they might still be in my area code. It's very confusing)
As far as the echo and the static goes, I haven't had a problem with that.Hopefully I won't.I agree with the other people about the caller id list, though. It's very confusing, it's not in order of calls. Also, there is no voice mail waiting notification. But other than that, it's not bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a recommendation
This phone has absolutely terrible reception. There is a constant "white noise" in the background and a profound click that happens every 30 seconds. I have not had one conversation on either of the handsets without having to ask the other person to repeat what they have said because of this click.

Another severe disappointment is the caller id. The calls are not listed in received order. I have yet to figure out the order they are displayed, but there is no way to tell what the most recent call is without scrutinizing the date on the call.

The last disappointing aspect I am reporting is that on the caller id display, any call outsite of your area code is not displayed with the preceding 1 (for long distance). This means you may not simply hit the talk button to call back the caller on caller id. You have to punch in the number with the preceding 1+...

There is no redeming feature on this phone to make it a worth while buy for any reason.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible phones
Click, click, click... Never stops clicking when talking on them. Can be heard from both ends. Bad Static. Poor range.Everything interfeeres with it.I will never buy another GE phone.I loved the look and feel. I like the features. But it's use is rediculious. And the batteries are always going dead.Avoid these phones. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Breaks easily and the WORST customer service
Had to send the base unit back TWICE due to it not charging the handset. Was able to send it back after many, many phone calls and explanations to the rep. Have had this phone for less than one year and already hate it for it's unreliability and lack of functions.

WORST customer service I've ever encountered. Well, except for Dell, but that's another review.

I recommend the Panasonic MultiTalk. It costs a little more but worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars using it as a speakerphone didn't work
The handsets for this worked great but the mic for the speakerphone was under the machine so to get it to pick up my voice at all I had to lift it up and talk into it.Since this kind of defeats the purpose of a speakerphone, I had to return it.I'm bummed - it worked great otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still The Best After A Year
I have been using this product for about a year now (since April 2003) and it is literally the happiest I have ever been with a retail cordless phone system. I telecommute and I am on the phone constantly with work and clients, to say nothing of family and friends. Despite 5+ hours a day of talk time, these phones never seem to lose their charge or their clarity. The only problem I have with clarity is if someone is running the microwave oven, otherwise the connection is always crisp. The separate stored numbers allow me to have one phone with all my personal information on it, and my roommate to have a separate one. Other reviewers have cited this as a flaw, but anyone living with a teenager or roommate will see it as a blessing. Others have stated that it's a flaw that both phones cannot be on at the same time. As a telecommuter I am grateful for this feature; when I am on a business call there are no unprofessional interruptions made by someone in another part of the house accidentally picking up the phone to make a call while I am speaking on the other handset. The additional handset plugs into a regular outlet - so it provides a great way to have a phone in a room where there isn't a phone jack. The only reason I might have given this a 4 ½ star had it been an option would have been the following reasons:

1. I have a minor hearing problem and I'm sensitive to volume levels. The loudest setting of this phone is what is closer to the medium setting of most other phones. I would like to see a future model offer one or two more amplified levels of volume. The clarity of this phone, however, lets it get away with this much more than the average phone could.

2. I have not, as of yet, found a headset that works well with this phone. This makes it mildly inconvenient for telecommuters like myself. Playtronics headsets work okay, but it's not a stellar match-up. The saving grace is that the speakerphone is very clear, but many clients don't like being on speaker phones.

Overall I am very happy with this little system and have not encountered any concerns in performance or usability over the course of a year. Some of the buttons are small, but in a month or so of using the phone, your hands will instinctively find the right spots, and it's worth it to have an overall compact phone that maintains clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars good
This is a great phone, especially if used across 2 floors. The base unit in the basement can easily be used with the handset unit placed in the upstairs.Calls are clear, but sometimes there is a "tunneling" effect, which is hardly noticible.the costomizable features of this phone are great, along with the phone book, caller id featers etc.buy it if you're looking for a phone that can be placed elsewhere in the house where a phone jack is unavailable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with my purchase!
I have been "unofficially" shopping for a phone set like this for over a year, but when one of my cheap corded phones broke last week, I decided it was time - a Christmas present for myself if you will. The price is great, and Uniden is a good name in cordless phones - how could I pass this up?

The phone(s) arrived the day after the email alerting me it had been shipped! It is an attractive set, not big, bulky or obtrusive. The handset is fine by me, but I do agree with the END button - the only way I knew how this worked was that a friend of mine has a much older version of this phone.Otherwise I am pleased as punch - Amazon does it again! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone!
I bought this version of the Uniden, then added the extra handset. You can also buy the TRU8865-2 which would offer the same package. In any event, I've been very happy.Good sound quality, great features, no wireless interference. Not sure if the 5.8GHZ technology is the real deal (I went back and forth between the 2.4 and 5.8 but realized this was the "wave of the future" and so went for it) but the phone is solid and sweet.

Plus features:
Direct link between phones (they function as walkie talkies)
Phonebook sync (from one handset to another)
Baby monitor function (what a great idea!)
Message waiting indicator light (rather than displayed on handset)

Minus:
None so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PHONE!
I have to say I really love this phone... no problems what so ever. The distance is great; we haven't had any problems with reception within the house or outside it. Nice display with caller id. Buttons work great and the phone fits nicely into your hand. The only thing that I do suggest is that you do read the description...Extra Caller ID Handset and Charger Included, it means as well as the base set wiih caller id, you also receive the handset and charger.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe description!!!!
The description says that this item includes an extra handset and charger. It didn't come with one. When I contacted customer service I was told that it was a misunderstanding on MY PART!!!! I have tried to escallate the issue and have not received a response. I will update if they ever decide to contact me. ... Read more
