Amazon.com Review

The sleek Plantronics M110 headset for mobile and cordless phones is a nice little unit that sits comfortably even during the longest hands-free conversations. It can also provide added safety to your cellular phone calls when driving because both hands can remain on the wheel.

The M110 features a sturdy headband, padded flexible earpiece and headpiece, and a fully adjustable microphone. It required no assembly and, in our experience, was extremely versatile. The microphone can be worn with the headband on either ear, and the headband was very light and comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The sound quality of the earpiece and microphone were both very clear during testing.

A noise-canceling microphone eliminates background noise on the M110, and makes your voice easily understandable to callers. There are also three levels of microphone volume, though there is no volume adjustment for the earpiece and, in our tests, we often had to ask callers to speak up.

The headset has a 4-foot cord with adjustable clothing clip to give you a wide range of motion. The M110 can be used with any cordless or cellular phone that's headset compatible and has a 2.5-millimeter jack. --Megan Dugan

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I DO NOT like things that attach to my ear!I requested a "McDonald's-like" headset for my cell phone for Christmas and this is what I got.The ear piece is a soft, leathery material, not the cheap foam that irritates your ears.I never have any problems with the sound, in fact, I hear better with headset than I do trying to hold my tiny phone to my ear.Never a complaint about people hearing me either. This is great for around the house, in the car or at work.I am a college instructor and I use it while I am walking around in my classroom filing, grading, etc., I just clip my phone to my pocket and I am free to roam. This headset is great and I would recommend it to anyone!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great if you don't mind not being heard
This headset was comfortable to wear, but people couldn't hear anything I was saying-- horrible microphone. I went out and bought a generic General Electric phone headset for 11.99 & am completely satified-- flexible microphone, great sound quality, mute button, volume control.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid This
The other reviewers are correct: This is an inferior product. The microphone makes you sound (to the person on the other end) as if your mouth is facing away from it. Long distance NEVER sounded so long distance, as it does with this product.

Plantronics prides itself on being the premiere headset/mic company: makes one wonder why they didn't do quality tests on this junk.

I'll be returning this product for a refund.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good sound -- worthless mic
I was very disappointed by Plantronics dropping the ball on this one.I spend an average of 5-6 hours a day on the phone and enjoyed the M175.Apparently, someone else did also, and I had to get a replacement.Figured the same thing as someone else here and I would save myself $15 and step down.

Headset and earpiece comfort were comparable, as was sound quality (reception).I get so many complaints on the mouthpiece, that I have given it up and am switching back.

Either the mic is poor, or the positioning is bad.I have a small face, and even so, I wish the boom mic was longer and didn't stop at the corner of my mouth.

Bottom line -- unless your mouth curves to one side or you like bending the mic to your mouth, skip this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat this headset
I've been the very happy owner of this headset for about a year. I use it with my cell phone, and people have told me they can actually hear me better when I use the headset than when I just use the phone itself. The sound quality is great, and the head piece is very comfortable. I would definitely buy this again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, works with most digital systems too
Plantronics has been in the phone business a long time, and it shows in the M12 amplifier. The unit is fairly easy to install. You start by pluggin it into the handset jack on the phone (some digital phone systems like Toshiba Strata Dk will offer an optional headset card - use that as you'll get better phone operation).

You may need 2 AA batteries (or the optional AC adapter), depending on your phone system.Plug in your headset (make sure its compatiable with the quick disconnect plug on the amplifier), and adjust a slider on the side of the amp to select one of five settings (use the one that gives the best quality sound and operation, you won't harm the amp by experimenting). Now you are ready to dial.

What makes this a good product? It is easy to install and configure, sound quality is excellent, and plantronics build quality is exceptional. It should last a long time and endure heavy use, even in a professional call center.

One note, this amplifier will not work with dial in the handset phones. Not too many of those around these days, but its good to be aware of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done Plantronics!
Despite being a little bigger than I would like and its somewhat "clunky looking" appearance this is a rock solid switch.

I have used this item for about 18 months and I am stunned at how well it continues to hold up.The switch is every bit as solid as the day I bought it and has withstood several switches per hour as I jump from online gaming to listening to music.

I would request that it have been a little smaller BUT,it has held up so well I would hardly dare to criticize any elements of its design. It has outlasted 2 sets of headphones and has been stepped on and rolled over far too mant times without any effects.

I would like to request a 5.1 model for future release.
4.5 stars round up to five.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for computers only!
This device can also be used with any audio unit (for example, a portable CD player) that has a mini-plug output jack--enabling you to switch from headphones to, say, amplified speakers, without the aggravating ritual of removing one plug from the playback unit and inserting the other (and wearing out the jack in the process); and at the computer, it can be used for instantly switching from those typically weak (but often useful) built-in monitor speakers to more powerful desktop speakers, as source material and circumstances demand. (Of course, you'll need one switch for each such arrangement.) A marvelously simple and simply marvelous device, with more uses than Plantronics chooses to advertise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only one flaw...
Great product, but with one glaring discrepancy:The microphone port is disabled when the switch is set to speaker output. This assumes the user won't use a microphone simultaneously with speakers, which in fact I do quite often.Other than that, a very handy device.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
Everything seemed to hook up fine, but I only had one speaker working when I tested the unit. At first I thought it was just a loose wire, but after checking everything I was about to give up. I had to unconnect everything and went back to my old setup but... I ended up with the same problem, one speaker working. I had to reinstall my sound card and then the PC Speaker Headset Switch worked fine. I'm not sure if the unit any thing to to do with my sound card messing up, but oh well. After all this the Switch box works great and the audio sounds perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple but effective
This is a very basic switch, that lets you use either your pc speakers or headphones, but it does the job really good, I didnt feel any sound degradation, and the appearance of the switch is ok.I think for $12.50 this thing does solve the problem.Good product, defenlty recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This product works but is disappointing. I've been using it everyday for three months now and have decided to get rid of it. Although it's adjustable, even at the lowest setting the volume really is too loud. I have to remove it when I dial or the tones actually start hurting. Also, if the other person happens to speak loudly it gets painful fast. I solved this by taping in some cotton - but, really, that's not what I paid for! It's nice to have a mute button, but, as another reviewer points out, it's too close (adjacent) to the button that hangs up the phone. I've hung up on people when I was rushing to turn off mute several times now. Last but not least, the microphone is too finicky. It has to be placed in just the right place or people say they can't hear me. I know a lot of people are too polite to say anything and just grin and bear it. Caller ID also is lacking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only good if you don't care what the other person is saying
I use this phone at work. I have been looking for a replacement. The features are nice and the headset holder is nice to have, but it has one terrible flaw - the clarity is non-existent! It sounds like the person on the other end is talking through a pillow. Turning up the volume doesn't help, either, it only amplifies the fuzz. We have another, older Plantronics phone that has much better sound quality, so maybe we just got a faulty one. I wouldn't risk it, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Performer!
I needed a phone for a home office. This phone was recommended and I bought it through an Amazon affiliated merchant. It is my 1st handsfree phone and I love the convenience of it! No more neck aches. Sound quality is as good or better than my cordless phone and no interference so far from any of the other equipment in the office. Small size base, comfortable headset. I would change 2 things - the MUTE button is right above the ON/OFF button and could cause an embarrassing hangup. The other is a longer headset cord. It appears to be about three feet long. Otherwise very nice!

5-0 out of 5 stars great quality!
This is the second model of this phone I have purchased - I'm a repeat buyer because the first one worked out so well.Great, clear sound quality, and a comfortable headset.I prefer a corded phone to cordless for the security factor, and because in a power outage a cordless phone is not operable. If you want a corded phone with a headset, this is the one!

1-0 out of 5 stars Picks Up Radio Signals
I purchased this phone for use in a home office and discovered immediately that it picked up a local radio station at a very audible level.I visited the Plantronics website and discovered that were well aware of this problem because it was listed in the FAQ on how to address the situation which they claimed was cause by living too close to radio station towers (we don't live near any radio towers). It went on to suggest ordering a filter to be installed between the phone and the headset control unit, but since this model has the head set control and phone fully integrated, I was doubtful of the solution. The alternative was to try several different locations and I finally discovered that if the phone was placed in my closet, the intereference dissappeared.I finally threw it away because of this ridiculous issue.Apart from this, it's a great phone, but this fatal flaw made it useless to me though I'm sure some users may never encounter this problem. ... Amazon.com Review

Designed for office telephones, the Plantronics H51-M12 monaural headset offers fine audio controls while still allowing you to hear what's happening in your office environment.

Unlike simpler units, the Plantronics headset-amplifier combo does take a bit of setting up; you'll need to plug your phone's handset cord into the amplifier's handset, the phone base into the amplifier and your phone's handset outlet, and finally the headset cord plugs into a Quick Disconnect module and the amplifier's headset.

Also unlike other headsets, a typical multiline phone will not default to the H51-M12's headset when you press a line button. With this unit, you have to remove the handset from the cradle in order to use the headset. Pressing a line button activates the speakerphone.

However, what's lost in simplicity is gained in finer control over both incoming and outgoing audio levels. The volume control on the front of the amplifier controls the incoming volume--that is, what you hear in your ear. On the side of the unit is a slide that controls outgoing volume--what others hear on the line. However, to move this volume slide, you'll need to use a plastic "screwdriver" located on the bottom of the unit.

The H51-M12 is not for use with cordless phones or units in which the dial pad is located on the handset. For a typical office phone, however, this unit is worth serious consideration. --John Frederick Moore

5-0 out of 5 stars Editorial Review is Incorrect
The editorial review incorrectly states that "unlike other headsets, a typical multiline phone will not default to the H51-M12's headset when you press a line button. With this unit, you have to remove the handset from the cradle in order to use the headset. Pressing a line button activates the speakerphone." Actually, the ability to leave the handset on the hook is entirely dependent on the telephone itself and has absolutely nothing to do with the headset.A headset ready telephone will default to the M12 and a non-headset ready telephone will not (the phone may need to be programmed).Check your telephone manual to see if it is headset ready (most manuals are poorly organized and there may not be a section specifically for headsets - check either the speakerphone, handsfree, or "how to answer a call" section of the manual). There are occasional exceptions to this rule - a few phone systems, less than one percent, are built with a certain type of headset in mind (your manual will say if this is true) - but those phones are few and far between.

5-0 out of 5 stars good product
I have been using it for the past 4 month almost every day, and it is really worth every cent. If you are the type of person who use the phone in front of the pc then this is what you exactly need. the good thing that you can use it with any phone regardless of the brand. it turned my cheap phone into a great phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fragile headsets
This phone works well for what I need -- but I've gone through two headsets in two years! The first one just quit working -- the second was destroyed when my son stepped on the cord and it broke off at the jack. So be sure to have a warranty or a replacement plan ... and of course, it's the headset, not the base, that's the expensive part.

3-0 out of 5 stars Plantronics T20 Update
Since this product is still being sold and preceding reviews were some time ago, I'll share my recent experience with the product. It's stylish and solid. The volume and tone controls are accessible and effective.Received audio (ear speaker) is clear and rich.Transmit audio (microphone)is adequate, but could use a gain control.

Disappointments: Line and mute controls are very close together, occasionally leading me to disconnect a line when I reach to mute it.No memory functions other than 'Redial', which doesn't seem to work on the second line.

GLARING INADEQUACY:The BLARING touch tones generated by dialing and navigating through interactive phone systems are way too loud, even at the lowest volume settings.Bad idea, bad design, bad Plantronics.Bad, bad, bad.

I would like have one but it is out of stocks. When

2-0 out of 5 stars Love/Hate Relationship
I LOVE the style of this phone! I love how the top lights up BRIGHT RED when I'm on the phone. I love how the mute lights up when enabled. I love the tone and volume controls and the fact that it handles two lines beautifully--each lighting up green when active, red when ringing. Even the headset is stylish AND convertible (over-the-ear or over-the-head)!

If only I loved the QUALITY!! :-( The sound is HORRIBLE. When dialing, the tones are deafening--to the point of pain. Seriously.

There is also an irritating noise. It's sounds like an auto-gain control (maybe the noise-cancellation) that induces a hiss ONLY when someone is speaking. If there is silence on the line, it is silent. When someone speaks (me or the caller) the hiss joins in. Fortunately, the callers can't hear it.

Also, people say they can't hear me very well. They say it sounds very thin compared to my cordless phone.

I'm really sad that this beautifully designed phone fails to perform. If I can get over the BLARING TONES and the ANNOYING HISS and the POOR SOUND QUALITY, I'll keep it. Otherwise, I'm taking it back.

1-0 out of 5 stars All Show and No Go!
If this product were only as pleasing to the ear as it is to the eye!But it's not. After more than a quarter century of engineering headsets/amplifiers one would think that Plantronics would get it right.Wrong!!

If I hadn't destroyed the plastic package in which it came I'd have returned this product without a moments hesitation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes the Others Look (and Feel) Like Toys
This is the first headset I've been completely happy with.Previously, I struggled with ear pads that were small and uncomfortably hard along with microphones that could not be adjusted properly.

I no longer struggle.

This headset is completely comfortable, and the microphone produces clear, intelligible speech.I use it with Dragon Naturally Speaking and couldn't be more pleased with the results.

If you need a good headset, by all means, give this one a try! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
This headset is a great combination of cell-phone-like microphone and music-player-like earbuds. I listen to iTunes or yahoo.launch.com, and don't have to switch headsets when I get a call on Skype. The sound quality isn't outstanding, but it's good enough. The only (small) problem is the extra long cord, which I keep bundled up by the computer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine for the price.
Works okay for basic use, but the sound quality is no-frills. The earbuds are barely adequate for listening to music -- noticeably lower quality than my old Radio Shack earbuds. They feel reasonably comfortable in the ears, at least for the few hours I've used them at a stretch. The in-line volume and microphone mute controls are handy. The microphone seems to work okay for internet telephony and videoconferencing, though I sometimes need to re-position it. The package makes for kind of a busy tangle on the desk. Everything seems okay for the price, but if you want something for an important application, you'll probably want higher sound quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Holds well / Sounds good
What else do you expect a headset to behave? I use it all the time on my panasonicKX-TG2216, 2.4 Ghz phone. It's rugged and stylish with volume control and mute. Would recommend as a safe options to hands free environment.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1 Suggestion, 1 Hack (and 2nd review on this item)
My only suggestion for improving this headset is that Panasonic should redesign the mute switch to allow the user to hit the button and remain on mute without holding down the button.

I did a little work with a scalpel to remove some of plastic housing around the plug, so that I could use this headset with my Xbox Live voice module. The headset works great in that context as well as with a cordless or mobile phone.
*** My 2nd TCA92 review(04Jun2005 -- 1st was 15May2004) ***
I read the other reviews, and maybe it's my good fortune that I'm using Panasonic 2.4 gig phones that were top of the line for their time. The phones sound great, the internals are solidly engineered, and I get killer sound from my headset. I generally turn the phone all the way up & the headset all the way down.

As far as durability, my Panasonic phones have been through 4 years of hard use and even some abuse. Like the phones, my headset has survived both as well. I threw this headset (angry at something other than the headset), hard enough to break the folding part that grips the user's head. I glued that back on, snapped the speaker assembly back together and went on as usual. This headset takes a beating, in my experience, so the other reviewer who experienced a failure must really have worked it over, or somebody else did & then wouldn't cop to it.

Anyway, I visited Amazon tonight to buy one of Panasonic's 5.8 gig phones as a gift -- another testament to my satisfaction with these phones.

Ps. I don't work for Panasonic, but rather a subsidiary of a large software company based in Redmond, Washington. Just so you know I'm not on the take.

1-0 out of 5 stars this headset breaks easily
Like others, I found that this headset worked for only a short time. Then I found that while I could hear the person I was calling, they couldn't hear me.

So I opened up the earpiece and found the problem:a wire had broken off the small chip that serves as the connection point between the mouthpiece and the earpiece.I soldered it back on, and the headset worked again.

In a week or two the same thing happened.I had to re-solder it.

The third time, I tried soldering it again, but more wires had broken off and I just gave up.

The problem seems to come from moving the mouthpiece. It CAN be twisted all around, but apparently that pulls on the wires inside and that's what breaks them off.

From what other people have described, I think this was what caused the problem they had.

I was happy enough with the headset itself -- when it worked, which wasn't for long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good sound.
In my experience, headsets need to match the phone you want to use them with. This headset works well with my Uniden phone ( PowerMax 5.8 ghz, 2 line). My voice is clear to the people I call. The volume in the ear piece is louder than with any other headset I have tried. The quality of the sound is acceptable but it lacks "richness".

This is a new unit for me and I can not address the reliability issue that other reviewers mention. I have found most headsets to be delicate and easily broken. The $16.00 dollar price at Amazon is better than full price at Office Max but it is still a dispoable item.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great, While it worked!!
I loved this headset while it worked.Fit great.Loved the mute feature. It lasted about 3 months and quit. Couldn't hear anything. Tried to take it back to retailer.Wouldn't do anything for me, said I should have bought the extended warranty. Yea, right!! On a $30 item!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Windy City
I've owned 4 handsfree units - none of them worked well in the wind until this one.The microphone works even when the wind blows hard off Lake Michigan. The sound in the ear piece is fantastic, very clear; I don't have to have the volume up full blast to hear.I've had no complaints from callers, they can hear me perfectly well.

I have two problems, minor, with the device.1)The cord between the ear piece and the microphone is too short.2)Sometimes if the ear piece isn't positioned correctly, it hurts my lobe.

Overall I love this and have been using it for well over a month. This particular model DOES NOT come with the optional voice activation/disengage call button. Some phone models are too old to function properly with that added feature (so I found out when I spent the extra $10 to buy one at the Verizon store), but they'll work just fine with this "basic" model. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars One word - LOUSY
You would think that Panasonic Cordless phone and Panasonic Hands-Free Headset would work well together, being that they are sold by the same company. Well, that is clearly not the case. I bought this headset specifically for the reason that it is sold by Panasonic to work with their cordless phones. I've tried it a few times and each time I get the same response from the person I'm talking to. They say I sound too far away, that they can barely hear me. This product is clearly not worth it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dual wear option compromises sound quality & comfort
I was looking for a convienent way to speak with colleagues and clients from my home office without being tied down to my desk. I have a Panasonic cordless phone and decided to stick with the same brand.

This KX-TCA98 seemed to fit the bill.Unfortunately, the over-the-ear option does not allow for use of the enclosedpadded "ear muff" - instead, a plastic ring fits behind your ear and a hard plastic speaker enclosure sits directly against your ear ... it's the only way it works, trust me.This arrangement is OK but isn't very comfortable. Also, when used like this, the sound volume is much lower than listening through the telephone itself (yes, even with the volume on headset and phone both up).

The headband wear option utilizes the "ear muff" and offers acceptable sound quality, loudness, and comfort against the ear. Unfortunately again, a compromise in the headband option reveals itself in the mirror ... one side lays flat and snug against your head while the speaker and microphone side push the headband out and away from your head so far that it looks absolutely ridiculous! (Hopefully you work alone)

The in-line volume and mute features work well.

In hindsight, I should have bought a headset-only model which probably fits better, has a better ear muff, sounds better and looks less hodgepodge.Just to top it off - the packaging is sooo difficult to open (even when carefully cut) that it is destroyed in the process - negating any possibility for exchange!

The morale: Don't try to be everything to everyone, just be really good at something. ... Read more
