The best cordless phone that I have used
Pros:
- sounds nice and clear for both handset and speaker phone.
- speaker phone on both base and handset.effectively makes it two phones, which means if you suddenly find your handset out of juice, you can still use the speaker phone on the base, instead of having to get up and run to the corded phone in the other room.
- NiMH batteries are better than NiCad in general.
- small and feels sturdy.compare to the panasonic kx-tg2227 I had both the base and handset are smaller.

Cons:
- 8 uninspiring, ring tones.and except for a couple, too high-pitched.
- there are 3 voice mailboxes, and there is no way to disable just one or two.

Phone broke 2 weeks after the warranty ended
So, I liked this phone just fine while it worked.

But it broke 2 weeks after the end of the 1 year warranty. Now the handset can't find the base, and it beeps approximately 5 times/minute while looking for its electronic mate (which it finds about 1/2 the time). When it can find the base, one can speak on the phone.

Obviously I have only 1 data point to offer, and so can't make meaningful generalizations about product durability. But our Panasonic cordless system (bought june 2002) still works fine. And for an original $110 cost, I did think the Motorola would work for longer than 54 weeks w/out breaking. (Works out to $2/week in cost).

Worked for 366 days after purchase, then broke
I was very pleased with this phone ... as long as it worked. It stopped working just after 1 year from the date of purchase (really 11 months from the date of receipt, given Amazon.com left it on back order for 1 month. Which I learned now counts against my warranty time. Who knew?) For $105 I would have liked it work work beyond a few days past the warranty. But that is just me.

Crystal Clear Quality of Motorola 5.8GHz Cordless Phone
Motorola 5.8GHz Cordless Speakerphone w/Answering System/Caller Id is a great buy for many a reason.
a)Crystal Clear Quality -- I am speechless by the clarity of voice...have not experienced this kind of quality before.
b) Speaker-phone on the handset and on the Base equipment is a cool feature.
c) Three mail-boxes -- Wow...I've one for me, one for my wife and one for my children.
d)Voice-mail beeper -- this draws your attention to a new voice-mail...beeps softly without annoying you until you listen to your voice-mail.
e) Great Price -- of course, via AMAZING Amazon.com.
g) Handset expandability -- can expand upto 6 handsets (thoughI find this redundant for me)but quiteconvenient for a large family or a small business.

Definitely, you'd not 'hang up' on it since it's quite 'engaging' and winsome besides its crystal-clear quality.

Quality phone, short on ergonomics
This phone, and the expansion kit are high-quality. I'm not one for whiz-bang bells & whistles. It performs clearly and flawlessly as a cordless phone. I think that is the most important part and is where this phone shines. You're paying for that quality, and it's worth it.

The only strike against it is ergonomics. Small buttons on the base make it difficult to dial from the base. The buttons on the phone are sized appropriately for the size of the phone, and are larger than the ones on the base.

The phone is flat and relatively narrow. It's easy to hold, especially with the ribbed-rubber sides. However, it does not do well if you try to "sandwich" it between your head/ear and shoulder. It supports a mic/speaker headset (on the portable) with the same type you use for your cell phone.

The speaker phone is adequate on the phone and base, but I rarely use it.

solid structure and good voice quality
I have bought 3 of these phones so far and I would recommend it to anyone.This is a better choice to the MD681 which I own 1 of.681 has a flaky answering machine is not integrated with the rest of the device.It is in my opinion not worth the money.Also you can use multiple handsets from different base stations and make thehandsets all look at the same base - this can be cheaper than buying individual expansion sets!

I believe this rebate deal is an outright scam
I purchased this phone several months ago, and subsequently recommended it to a friend, based on the low price after rebate. I submitted my rebate according to all directions - I'm a VERY meticulous person where rebates are conerned. I also handled the rebate for my friend, to save her time.

Having recently visited a rebate tracking service website, I was shocked to find that both rebates were rejected. According to their information, the offer I submitted was not valid for the phone I purchased. Well, guess what: the rebate -was- valid, and -did- apply to exactly the right item, model number, UPC code, and so forth. I -always- check these things before sending in a rebate. In fact, I check these things twice because I want to avoid precisely this kind of problem. Naturally, since I mailed in the original UPC code for both phones, it's virutally impossible for me to "prove" my case. I'm left with little recourse but to warn other potential buyers.

The phone itself is of adquate quality, though the speakerphone function leaves much to be desired. Overall the phone would be a reasonably good deal IF the rebate offer were actually honored. As it stands, I feel I've been cheated by Motorola (or whomever handles their rebates), and will never purchase another Motorola product. Buyer BEWARE!

Fine, but transmits on 2.4 GHz also (interferes w/ wireless)
The phone works fine.

But it transmits on 2.4 GHz frequency for incoming calls (which is not disclosed on the materials included w/ the phone), and which can interfere w/ wireless networks. As a 50+% 2.4 GHz phone, it isn't a great deal, either.

I think Motorola should really provide better documentation for this, so buyers can make informed decisons (other than returning the product). ... Read more

Nice 2nd Gen phone system
I junked my Motorola MD681 for this phone.I was skeptical about jumping into another wireless phone system, but I needed phones in some areas where there are typically no jacks (garage, attic).After doing some research, I decided to go with Panasonics' new phone system.Unlike Motorola, I see all types of older 2.4Ghz expandable Panasonic phones still available for purchase from the popular retailers. So, this new phone should be supported for some time.Anyway, into the details.

The Good
1. Handset : this phone feels good in the hand and on the ear.Though not overly heavy, it has a nice weight and doesn't creak or flex through normal use unlike some other less expensive handsets.Most of the color on the handset is protected by a clear acrylic, so it will retain its color for years.The LCD screen is very large, much larger than I am used to.It does show a great deal of information legibly.It has an orange backlight that illuminates the screen as well as all of the buttons.Most of the navigation is done with a 4-way joystick and 2 soft buttons which makes most things fairly intuitive.

2. The Base : It is small considering how many buttons and functions it performs.It is however missing a large display for showing callerID information.However, most of the time I will look to the phone to provide this info, and it leaves only one CID list to maintain.On my old system, the base would always show 50 new calls because I never went through the CID list on the base, so this is a plus for me.

3. Sound : Okay, this is a highly subjective area, but I like the sound of the Panasonic.The speakerphone, on the handset, is probably one of the best I have used.The mic is sensitive enough that we don't have to yell to be heard, and the speaker provides consistent volume and good clarity.There is a voice enhancement filter that you can turn on or off, or have the phone decide when to use it.I have it set to automatic, and I can't tell if it is on without looking at the display.It is never on for domestic calls, but for those overseas calls it activates and the calls sound like domestic calls with a wee bit of static.I have not done an A/B comparison to see how a long distance call sounds with it on and off, so this could be a gimmick.There are the standard beepy, computerized ringtones included, but you can record your own ringtones into the phone from any source you want.I haven't played with this yet, but the demos that are included with the phone sound as good as could be expected from a telephone.I guess I would put them above cell phone quality audio of the same type.

4. Convenience : The thing that I love about this phone is that you can check/delete/save your answering machine messages from any handset. If there is CID info, you can return the call immediately by pressing talk and the phone will dial the number.The other thing I love about this phone is the shared phonebook.No more looking for the phone with so-and-so's number on it, or having to program 4 phones with the same number, they will all have the same phonebook.This phone also has a distictive ring capacity.You can program anyone in your phonebook to flash the LED in one of three colors (blue/green/orange) as well as play a certain ring tone, including the user recorded types.Plus the standard intercom, call transfers, 3-way calling that is pretty much standard with these types of phones.

5. Extras : This system comes with a feature called CallerIQ.You have to signup with a 3rd party company openLCR.For $10 every 4 months, they will allow you to call them and download weather, stocks, sports scores, horoscopes and lottery results. Ringtones aren't included and cost extra and are of the downloaded cell phone ringtone sytle.You can also have your phonebook uploaded for safe keeping and reference while away from home.Not sure if this is a plus or minus, but getting the 1 to 3 days of weather on your phone is a nice little thing.I have not tried this myself.

6. Range : This phone covers my whole house with no static or dropouts.I have not attempted to walk down the street with it because I probably never will, but a walk to the mailbox proved its range to be adequate, especially with the base at the other end of the house.I have also not noticed any intereference with my wireless network, but truth be told you shouldn't with any 5.8ghz phone.

The Not So Good
1. The Phone : The buttons are small.Not very small, but noticeably smaller than normal.The Talk/Off/Speakerphone buttons and the Soft Buttons are tiny, and may be hard to hit for those people with big/wide fingers.

2. The Base : I would not suggest mounting this on your wall.The bracket supplied essentially holds the base horizontally as if it were laying on a table, so it just juts out into the room instead for hanging more or less flush.Needless to say, my base is resting upon a table now.The base also was not intended to be the primary source of input.The LCD panel is small, and only displays the number of calls on the answering machine.A small green light on the base will let you know if the line is being used.I wish there was more info displayed on the base, but the phone is your primary device for accessing the system, so I guess they're keeping it simple.

3. Sound : Other than the questionable effectiveness of the voice enhancer, I don't have much to complain about here.

4. Convenience : How hard is it to name the various phones?I don't want to have to tell people phone 2 is in the basement, or phone 3 is the guest room.Why can't we label phones or just pick from a list of common rooms when we associate a phone to the base?I deduct .5 stars for this because everything else is there, why not this?It seems like a total no brainer.

5. Extras : I'm not sure about the 3rd party site for CallerIQ.They mention on the site that it is a long distance call, but they don't say to where.So, you figure 30-90 seconds a day to download the information.That's quite a bit of long distance calling that you have to pay for on top of the service charge.No too sure about this one.

So, this turned out to be much longer than I had ever intended it to be.So, I'll attempt to summarize for those who don't want to slog through my rambling.

The Panasonic TG5571M is a solid phone with a good feature set and some very nice convenience features added in.It allows you to check the answering machine from any phone in the system, it also has one unified phonebook that is shared between all phones, and it has great sound and sufficient range.However, it is missing the capability to name the various satellite phones, the buttons on the phone are slightly smaller than normal and the wall mount projects the phone into the room.I'm giving it 5 stars, because I can't give 4.5. ... Tried them all...this is the only one I kept
I have tried all the 5.8mhz 2 line phones. None really cut it in the quality/distance specs. This is a great performer for the price and I paid much more than what it is selling for now.

Pros:Read the other reviews and save me the time...they are all good and I put 8 hours a day on mine and after 9 months it is still going strong.Things I like are good display, best distance of the 3 phones I tried, easy to use without a long read of the manual, and great drop performance.I have dropped this phone many times from counter height to my hardwood or concrete floors with no ill affects.The belt clip is a great design and will not come off. The phone contacts are the best design I have seen as they always make a connection even if the phone is tilted.Having individual phone books is nice except if you syc them with the base you loose your individuality.Not one performance problem.I did order a 3rd handset a few weeks ago and the display was different (a later "imnproved" model)but I noticed a hum/hiss that was not on the other original hansets and did not exist on them when in the same location.I have returned this for exchange.

Cons: Like all 5.8mhz sets this one has limited range but a good 100 through walls.50 feet if you included an aluminum sided wall. Volume could be higher...what is it with all these phone people...they just can put enough volume in anything whether it be cell phone or wireless handset. Headset also left something to be desired.In ability to add just one contact to the general phone directory, in ability to use speaker phone on intercom mode.I just wish there was someway to push a little more distance out....

Good phone - shame about the speakerphone.
Got this phone to work from home, along with 4 of my colleagues. The phone offers a very comprehensive set of features. We were also told it would work ok with a wireless network.

The phone is difficult to use from the base station. The numbers are so close together it's easy to punch the wrong button. I guess that's the price you pay for having a small footprint, which the phone certainly has.

The biggest problem we are finding is with the base unit. The speakerphone on the base cuts out, meaning large parts of conversations are missed. If it was just my phone I would have tried swapping it, but it's three different phones being used in three different houses.

Uniden support suggested this was probably due to phone placement. They say the phone should be at least 5-6 feet away from electrical appliances. We're using the phones for work, which means within a few feet of a laptop computer. This seems to be the only common cause of the problem - unless the phones just have a flaw, but nobody else seems to have reported problems with the base unit speakerphone.

It seems very odd that the problem is only with the base unit. I would have thought electrical interference (from a laptop) should affect the handset more, since it's wireless, rather than the wired base unit. That doesn't seem to be the case.

One of my colleagues also reported 'garbled messages' when using voicemail. Interesting to see other comments here about voicemail not working.

The phone probably offers the best set of features compared to other similar phones. Unfortunately the speaker phone problem is proving to be such a pain we're contemplating our options for returning the phones - hence only a 2 star rating.

Very Nice - apart from the echo on line 2
I have the same echo-like sound when using the phone on line 2 as a previous reviewer described.I had read that review prior to purchasing the phone but didn't believe it.I wish I had.That said, only 1 of my 2 handsets has a bad enough echo that I don't like talking on it.Both handsets work great for line 1 - really clear sound and no echo.As with the other reviewer I swapped lines, phones, and various other combos but got consistent results.Uniden tech support had me do a "reset" of the phones and base unit - to no avail.They said a repair is the next step.

It's too bad, the phone has great features, feels nice, and all that.I'm not sure if I'll purchase the Panasonic (I've had bad luck with several of their phones) or try to keep swapping additional handsets hoping to get ones that don't echo.I don't use line 2 a lot so can get by for awhile.

The only other feature I didn't like was that the caller-id info is saved on each phone.If I want to delete a caller-id log record, I have to go to the base, its handset, and my extra handset and deleted from each one.Otherwise it shows "New CID" on the handsets as if there is a call needing attention.Something I'll just have to ignore because it's a nuisance going to each phone to delete them.

Great phone system
We have six of these handsets in our home, for over six months, and they work great! The sound quality, range, and battery life are superior to every other cordless phone I have ever used. The feature set is very well thought out, and the phones are extremely easy to use.

Below Par: Makes Background Noise
Every feature said to be available exists, but, over several months, the quality has dropped to worthlessness.

Cons
The secondary handset recharger stopped recharging.

Both handsets crackle and fade. Others hear me fine, but I am unable to hear them. New batteries did not help.

The phonebook is rudimentary. The Nokia cell phone I received free has a better phonebook. Each name only gets one number.

The handset is heavy. For the price, some of the weight should be engineered out.

Pros
When things were working, the volume was easy to change.

Standard rechargeable batteries.

Unsure: I never used the answering machine feature. I have voice mail, and did not find it necessary. My opinion of the phone does not include this unused feature.

Overall, I am disappointed. Hopefully, their customer service people will provide a solution.

I realize many people have found the VTech 5850 a fine phone, but I do not. Maybe I bought a lemon. VTech's reputation is strong, and better luck might be found with this popular phone. I am bound in this review to provide my experience, and that experience was that of a sub-par cordless telephone.

I love it !!!!
This is the best phone i've ever used.It is so clear that my friends could hear the clock on the wall ticking!Easy to follow directions, great features and the answering machine is wonderful.I highly recommend this phone.And, the second phone doesn't require a phone jack.How sweet is that???!!!

Watch out
This is a wonderful phone system and I was going to give it
five stars until one of the most important features I got it
for, broke.

I've had Vtech phones for a long time and found them superior. This time, they've changed the belt clip to not only have very sharp tines that dig into and tear clothing, but after only four months of use, the vicious clip has snapped and according to the 'customer service' line, can't be replaced as they are available only with the system at purchase. After a strong complaint to customer service, they offered to send me one when they might get one in their stock. These clips are apparently unavailable in the stores, although during my first questions to the service rep, I was told to go to the store to buy another. The belt clips of the older Vtech were a well designed, didn't tear clothing and were very sturdy, after years of use, still intact. This new one, after only four months is useless. If this feature is important to you, you might want to look elsewhere.

Disappointed
This phone has some good options, just not ones that I use. For instance, it does not have a speed dial option. It has what's called a phone book. You have to scroll through a menu to pick what number you want to dial. I use my speed dial to put in my calling card 800 number and then another speed dial to put in the pin. Now I have to scroll through to get the pin number in time to enter it when it's asked for. What a pain.

I put this phone where my old cordless was and there's nothing but static and this tin can sound. I have changed the location of this phone to 7 different spots, no luck. It still sounds terrible.

It is very uncomfortable to hold up to your ear. The ringer choices are so obnoxious that I have the ringer off and use the old phone just so something rings when a call is coming in.

I don't have caller ID in my area so I cannot comment on how well that works.

The answering machine is nice but you have to be very careful as to when you hit the delete button to delete a message. If you hit it at the end of a message it will delete the NEXT message not the one you were just listening to.

For the money this phone is a real disappointment. It's such a hassle to return it that I guess I'm stuck with it until some friend needs a phone and I'll give it to them or put it in a rummage sale. ... Read more

Features missing
For prospective buyers:This phone has no ability to transfer the phone book between handsets and/or base unit (you have to enter the number manually into each one) and has really irritating ring choices.

I do not own this wireless phone
but I was checking the replacement of Vtech, which has a lot of static, and the voicemail records without any reason
when I check this model, I found this phone is running on both 2.4 and 5.8GHz (same as Vtech)
wireless owners, pls think twice before buying this unit

Not good with wireless communication
This is the second 5.8 we purchased and returned.It disconnects our wireless internet when the phone is in use.We have to turn the computer off and reboot to get it back once the call has ended.Funny, the label states this was developed just for wireless connections.We tried the Panasonic KX-TG5240M first which I commented on too.

The sound quality seemed to be good and battery life okay, just kills the internet... Really liked some of the features, but was a little complicated to program.You only have to do that once, though.So, if you are not worried about the wireles internet and can work your way through the first programing, this might be a good choice.

We are on our third brand, Radio Shack's 5.8.Funny, it costa LOT less and so far no problems.

This phone is top of the line AT&T has to offer.It includes all the features we often use as consumers.However, remember that this technology is rather new to the cordless phones market.If people learn about them and find out how they are best used, it will minimize the complaining factor.The only negitive thing i see about these new phones is their warrenty.When you pay that high the warrenty should be at least 3 years.

Very nice phone system
An incredible little phone system. We purchased a full compliment with 3 additional handsets a few months ago. So far it's been great. The default ring tone is nice but the other options are pretty annoying. The screen is easy to read and the menu system is very easy to navigate. The speakerphone is surprisingly clear. There has been no interference and our wireless computer network hub is only 10' away from the base. The Voice Enhance feature is pretty much worthless. It makes everyone sound like a Decepticon. The signal won't make it through our building's firewall about 200' away but I have yet to find a phone that will.

One point on caller ID: The handsets that do not answer a call will display "XX Missed Calls" but the caller ID data is still there. Hitting the up/down button will take you right to the numbers, just like on most cell phones. From the other reviews is sounded like Caller ID data would not be recorded on idle handsets.

This system replaces the hellish nightmare we had been using: the Siemens 2420 Gigaset. The Siemens phones had bad internal electrical connections that resulted in the earphone cutting out and non-functioning buttons. Those Siemens phones also had the worst menu system ever devised for a phone. Transferring a call was so complicated we got in the habit of physically handing the phones to the person the call was for. We're still getting used to being able to transfer calls!

Misleading product
I purchased this phone, specifically for the mailbox functionality claimed by Panasonic ("Up to 3 mailboxes").

Unlike their other products, this product DOES NOT support mailboxes. Only after several conversations with their technical support did I "help" them come to the conclusion that their web site and product specs are incorrect.

Very good phone but could use better user interface
I've owned several multi handset systems over the last 4 years beginning with the product the started it all off, the Siemens 2420.Don't even get me started on how bad the Siemens cordless handset reception is.Everyone who uses one knows they are pathetic.Other than the poor reception, the Siemens 2420 and 8825 still have the best menu system and setup of any multi handset system, Panasonic 6500/6502 included!

Just so everyone understands, Panasonic, Uniden and most companies (I believe Vtech/AT&T included) use the same chipsets from www.dspg.com.This is why the ergonomics of most of these systems are the same or similar.I'll list the advantages and disadvantages I see in the DSP Group implemenation as compared to Siemens way of doing things....

Advantages:
-Excellent handset reception (even the 2.4Ghz models are OK and do not experience much interference)5.8 is very clear with no interference in my home.
-handset range is actually better than I suspected at 5.8Ghz (remember the higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength
and generally the shorter the range).
-Room/baby monitor

Disadvantages:
-no handset naming
-handsets show missed call even if the call is answered by another handset.
-no password lockout for settings (such as answering machine PIN).Can't lockout the kids from being nosey.
-only supports 2 digit answering machine PIN
-When remote checking answering machine it does not support reading of caller ID info for message (how many people say "call me" but you don't remember their #)?
-overly complex menu to manipulate answering machine from remote phone.
-does not set time by using caller ID info
-4 handsets only
-True Speech voice compression quality is horrible even if set to "enhanced" mode.

So, reception alone is enough to convince me to keep this system and toss my aged Siemens.Ergo-wise, I will definitely miss my Siemens.Unfortunately Siemens Corporate tells me they will not have a new phone system until the second half of 2005.

Sorry that this review turned into a comparison to Siemens, however I feel that DSP Group, Panasonic, Uniden, etc. who support them need to get of their rocker and begin to expand the feature-set of the chipsets to support features that people can really use!!!

VERY Satisfied with this phone
I purchased this phone with three additional handsets and I am extremely happy with it. The quality is excellent, compared to 2.4GHz phones, and it does not interfere with my wireless computer network. The range is excellent. All features are easy to use, clearly explained, and function perfectly. The phone has a great feel to it, and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.

Not well executed
There are, at this time, exactly two 5.8 GHz 2-line expandable phone systems -- this Panasonic and the Uniden TRU8866 -- and I found it frustrating to research them because they're new and there's not much information out there. So my two cents, should it be helpful...I bought this Panasonic 6500B and three handsets, played with them for a week, and called today for an RMA number to return them. I'm now evaluating the Uniden system, which I think I'll end up keeping.

(For reference, I'm migrating from a Siemens gigaset 2420, 2-line 2.4GHz system, amazon item B00004R7R1. It's noted for a few quirks, but it's been solid for 6 years and I'd easily favor it over the Panasonic.)

Pros:
-- you only have two options at present, so this phone does deliver 2-line 5.8 GHz functionality
-- blinking antenna for ringing/message was a nice touch
-- all of the basic stuff you'd expect...intercom, speakerphone, Caller ID, etc.


Cons:
-- poor sound quality, even compared to my 2.4GHz system -- there was a constant hiss even when standing near the base, and it wasn't line noise. (There is a voice boost/voice enhancer function, though even the manual notes that it might amplify any existing line noise you may already have.)

-- one 'feature' that tilted me toward the panasonic was a 'shared' phone directory among the handsets and base. It actually works like the Siemens - you have to manually copy phonebook entries from one handset to another, so keeping them all in sync is a pain.

-- The handsets didn't behave like extensions of the same line; when you answer a call on one handset, all of the others display 'missed call', which you must then clear from EACH handset. So I always seemed to pick up a handset with a few missed calls, which were actually answered on a different handset.

-- Lack of an aux port so the phone can catch the distinctive ring and shuttle a call to the fax (btw, the Uniden doesn't have this either)

-- Misc. minor annoyances: Panasonic still uses a two-digit code for the answering machine, as it did ~15 years ago. Only eight ring tones (4 ring/4 melody), none of which were great.

-- basic interface is just crude compared to other modern phones/cell phones (I'm a techie with a UI/usability background, so I do have bias there).

Overall, I found this Panasonic to be a step down from the Siemens. I've only had the Uniden for a couple days, and I'd certainly say it's the better option of the two. ... Read more

Disappointed
I recently purchased this phone and have to say that I am disappointed in the corded base phone.It sucks. For one, the mouth piece/microphone is several inches from my mouth because the overall handset is too short.Two, it has a strange echo sound to it that I immediately disliked. Three, why should I have to set the time and date on a caller ID phone? This phone was meant to replace my aging Nortel phone but it isn't even in the same ballpark. I am returning the phone and shopping on Ebay for another Nortel.

All The Bells & Whistles
I did alot of research before I purchased this phone. I've had it going on a month now. there's nothing I do not like about it!. You can even turn off the featured beeps that let you know you have messages waiting. The sound quality is exceptional. Everything this phone has to offer is well worth the price. I especially like the monitor feature. I have a little one.

No headset capaibility on base unit, good phone otherwise
I bought this phone to gain headset capability on a corded base while still having a cordless handset.I am returning the phone, as it does not allow the use of a headset on the corded base.Not only does the phone lack a 2.5mm jack or a second audio port, the base is incompatible with universal headset adapters (confirmed by Uniden customer service).It's too bad, beacuse the cordless phone audio quality is as good as I've heard.

Decent phone but poor handset quality
I just recently purchased this phone and found the other editorials useful in setting up the system.However, I have to agree with the opinions of the quality of sound in the handset is horrible.It sounds like your in a hollow cave.It's easier to grab the handset & hook up a headset.The speaker works great and the volume controls are easy.It's basically a no brainer.I live in the country and found when the power goes out having a cordless phone is useless therefore the corded phone does the trick.

It's just not Siemens
I regret purchasing this phone, but there's really nothing better out there.

I have only owned it for a month now.

My Siemens Gigaset System was made inoperable by a wicked caller id bug they don't seem to have plans to fix. It was also 2.4 Ghz and my microwave and 802.11b network caused the handsets to pop. I wanted a new expandable system that had a similar form factor (corded speakerphone on the base) but at a fraction of Siemens inordinately high cost.

The Uniden TRU888 is really the only expandable system on the market that could ever compare. I bought it. Now I know it just barely compares Siemens (who seems to be bowing out of the consumer home phone market in the US).

Here's why I say that.

The Uniden is boxy. The Siemens had that European sexy and sleek minimalist thing going on - it regularly showed up on television sitcoms, probably because it was so cool looking. I felt the Siemens was an accessory to my house. The Uniden is embarrassing.

The Uniden has this silly belt clip that sticks out a good inch or more - making it impossible to actually fit under a bet and making it fatter than it ever really need be. The whole form factor is clunky, although the base handset is extremely heavy - something I actually like.

The Uniden has this annoying beep beep beep that the base announces until you finally check your messages. If you are using call screening or "let the machine get it" while you are watching a movie or having a nice Easter dinner, it will nag the crap out of you until you finally go listen to new messages.

The Uniden has the day and time on the handset which is nice, but it is only the weekday (Mon, Tue, Wed) - not the actual date. This is system-wide and it means that when you get a voice mail, you have to figure out the date for yourself, it just tells you the weekday. Is it really so hard to account for the month and year? No.

The Uniden does not display the caller id information on the voice message! The Siemens, in contrast, even let you "call back" while you were listening to a message just by picking up the handset.

The Uniden has the goofiest user interface I could have ever dreamed up. It is extremely clunky - almost to the point that my wife prefers to not use it. Accessing the speakerphone, the phone book, especially changing settings is an exercise in patience.

The Uniden hides the caller id information or the number you are dialing as soon as you push talk. I suppose I could thumb through the caller id list or the redial list, but it's just another example of a weak user interface.

The Uniden phone book works basically the same as the Siemens did (why can't a USB interface sync with Outlook contacts?) with the exception that the Uniden cannot delete the book at one time. With 40 entries on 2 handsets + the base, clearing the phone book is a carpal tunnel-causing experience, deleting 120 records with no less than three actions each.

The Uniden does not do a good job of displaying the phone book entry with the incoming caller id information. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but it's nuts. The manual is helpful, but very inadequate. If you want anything past the basic stuff, it is no real help.

The Uniden is lacking so many features:

It simply doesn't handle area codes at all; it's horrible. There is no barring certain area codes. There is no inserting a call around prefix. The handset does not work if cradled. There is no way to turn features off - like storing caller id or the annoying beep beep beep on the base. There is no way to restrict dial or pick-up access to a single handset. Transferring a call does not work like you expect. And all the other great stuff I enjoyed with the Siemens phone.

It does a few things well, though:

The handset speakerphone is superb. The illuminated keyboard is great. Distinct ring tones for phone book entries is cool. The ability to manage global settings from a handset is neat. The day and time on the handset display is handy.

But that's about it.

The reality is, I had no choice but to buy this phone. There is nothing on the market that is half as good - as far as I have found - and Siemens seems to be out of the home phone market. Had I never owned a better phone, I would likely be enamored with this Uniden. But once you taste the best, the rest just isn't.

Poor range - had to return
I have a 900 MHz DSS Uniden EXI8965 cordless phone which I have had for a few years and have been *very* satisfied with it.It has excellent voice quality, good range, and great battery life and I hope to continue to use this phone for a long time in the future.

However, I have a den which does not have a phone jack and therefore I need a dual handset phone so I can have keep a handset in the den at all times. I have been searching for a dual handset cordless phone for some time with the following features:
(1). Fairly large and comfortable feeling handset. I guess I am old fashioned (and old) and like the larger handsets much better than the smaller ones.
(2). Good voice quality.
(3). Good range.
(4). The ability to use both handsets at the same time. Plus the ability when using one handset, to simply pick up the other handset and join in the conversation.
(5). Speaker in the handset.
(6). Caller ID/Call Waiting
(7). Chain dialing for long distance and calling card usage.
(8). At least 50 memory locations for storing caller ids.
(9). Five or more last number redials.
(10). Lighted keypad.
(11). Large display with date and time of call, caller name, and caller number on one screen.
(12). Selectable ring tones by caller.I now have BellSouth Complete Choice local service where you can have a distinctive ring for up to 10 different numbers.Using this feature, I can tell when my kids or grandkids are calling before I answer the phone. However, I can't tell which one is calling because there is only one distinctive ring.I was looking for something like the AT&T VIP ring feature.
(13). Misc other features like Intercom, handset paging, and fairly secure transmission.No answering machine capability.
(14). I didn't want to pay over about $100 for the phone set.

I found the Panasonic KX-TG2357B on sale at Staples ($20 rebate). It seemed to have gotten pretty good reviews on the Internet for the most part so I decided to go ahead and buy it.The phone had an answering system which I didn't need but the $20 rebate was enough to help convince me to buy it anyway. I came home and unpacked it and plugged it in for its 6 hour charge. I installed the base station at one end of the house and the extra handset at the other end of the house in my den. After charging, I began testing the phones out.

Pros: Nice set of features. Nice sizing of handsets for me. Attractive phone. I liked the handset speakerphone. Not a bad price.

Cons: There were two main problems:
(1). *Range*. My house is about 70' long. The base was at one end of the house and the second handset was in the den at the other end.There is a brick wall between the base and the second handset.When using the phone in the den, the reception was bad. The conversation kept breaking up to a moderate degree.If I moved on the other side of the brick wall, the reception seemed to be fine.I could have moved the base closer to the second handset but I needed the Intercom capability between both ends of the house and I would have lost this had I moved the base. I understand that wireless networks, microwaves, etc. can affect 2.4ghz phones.I don't have a wireless network, nor to my close neighbors plus the microwave wasn't running.
(2). Sound Quality.The sound quality on my end was pretty good if I wasn't too far from the base station. However, the sound quality for the person to whom I was talking was not good, according to the person who was helping me test out the phones. He said it sounded like I was calling from a not so good cell phone. I could call him on my Uniden and he said the sound quality from it was very good - just like a corded phone.

Other Comments:
(1). Talking Caller Id. I liked the idea of the talking caller id. However, for me, it did not prove to be that useful.The main reason is that the phone does not tell you who is calling until after it rings twice. Usually by that time, I have already picked the phone up and checked the caller id. I believe for me, a distinctive ring tone for certain callers would be more useful. However, for some people, I could see where the talking caller id would be useful. I understand that this is a limitation of the phone company, not Panasonic, as the caller id information is not transmitted until after the second ring. As other reviewers have noted, it does not always pronounce the names correctly and even provides some humor in the way it pronounces names at times.
(2). Caller ID display.It takes two screens to display all the caller id information when you receive a call.I believe the number of the caller is displayed on the second screen. The phone alternates back and forth between the first screen and the second screen of information.This is not critical but just an annoyance. My Uniden displays all the information on one screen which I like.
(3). You have to press one button to answer the phone and another to hang up.I prefer to press Talk to answer and to press Talk again to hang up.Not critical - just my personal preference.

Couple more comments:

Since I love my old Uniden cordless phone, I looked into getting a dual handset Uniden phone. However, it appears that you can only talk on one handset at a time. At least this is the case on the cheaper Uniden phones.If anyone knows differently or has found a dual handset phone that you are happy with which has the features I am interested in, please e-mail me.

I mentioned earlier that I bought the Panasonic phone from Staples.When I returned it they were very nice and helpful and I would recommend them. I am not associated with them in any manner whatsoever.

I am still searching for the perfect dual handset cordless phone!

Great phone to work with VOIP.
I originally purchased this phone to use with VONAGE VOIP service.Then I realize you can actually rewire your home phone switch box to have all the phone jacks in your house to run off 1 single VOIP line.So that kinda destroyed the purpose for me to buy this phone buy still, I don't regret my decision on purchasing this phone.I must say I am a big Panasonic phone fan.After I purchased this phone, I realize now I have 4 Panasonic phones in my house (2 from this Dual handset, 1 older Panasonic 2.4Ghz cordless phone, and 1 fax machine).All-in-all great product with nice features.Surely this phone doesn't pronounce the name from Call ID that well, but I am usually able to hear who is calling me.

One drawback... Pain in the A$$ for trying to enter names into phone book.For example, when you want to type MONEY.Notice M, N, O are all on #6, you can't just wait 2 seconds and press the number again to have the cursor move to next block, you have to press "6" and "->" then "6" to have enter "MO".

Still a great phone after you entered the phonebook first.

Great phones for the money.
I had purchased the 2.4 GHz VTech single phone, but returned it partly because of the good reviews here and I wanted 2 handsets. I'm glad I did these phones are much better. Some of the features I like:

- When you press 'On' to make a call a timer starts in the display window, and tells you how long you've been on the phone. Very handy, especially when on hold. Then, if you like, set the phone down (stand it up) and press the Intercom button. Now you're in speaker phone mode and can do other things while waiting.

- It feels good in the hand, has a solid feel. One handed dialing with thumb is easy.Volume control on the side is OK.

- The msg waiting light on the base unit is very noticeable - much more than the previous Vtech I just returned.

- Backlit keypad and display is handy at night. The Display window is very informative with various array of messages.

- The intercom-walkie talkie feature is kind of neat. The handsets can call each other. Nice around the house when you don'twant to use cell phones. While talking to each other, either phone can make an external call, and have a 3-way conversation.

- I like the default ringer tone. It's softer, warmer. I turned the ringers off other phones in the house.

- Shared phone book between handsets is smart and time saving. Changes, updates to the phone book on handset 1 are seen on handset 2, and vice versa.

- You can give each handset a unique name. The default is 'Vtech' on both. That can be changed.

People must like this phone - Amazon can't keep it in stock!

I've always been happy with Vtech phones and think the features, quality and price can't be matched by comparable brands.

Third time is not a charm. Defects and lousy support.
I've given this phone more than a fair trial. I've purchased this and 5850 phones three times. (The 5850 has an answering machine but identical handsets.) All of their identical handsets have malfunctioned immediately or eventually. The first time one of the screens lost contrast and became unreadable. The last two times the handset became inoperable after being left off of the cradle for several hours. None of the buttons would respond until the phone was recradled for a moment. (This would happen even after the batteries were fully charged.)

I returned the first two for refunds, but the third time I sent a message to VTech's online "support." Their email response was: "Due to the nature of your inquiry, your request would have to be handled by a representative who will provide you with the more detailed information." But when I called the "tech support" number provided I infuriatingly discovered that they only have automated tech support when you select the support phone menu option. So, I called the sales number and the rep said they are trying out this new automated approach to "tech support." That is, they have decided to ditch genuine support.

I asked to speak to a sales supervisor and he said that they have had other complaints about the inoperable handsets. He offered to send me replacement handsets, saying that he thought they have fixed the issue. Which brings up the obvious question: why are they still permitting retailers to sell units that VTech knows have defects? I've only had this one for a week. Shouldn't those defective phones be recalled? The supervisor's only response was to chuckle nervously.

So, while these phones have good talk time and audio quality, and respectable features, I can't recommend them since they are highly prone to defects and the company has such a laughable excuse for support.

Great for the first 8 months
This phone worked great with great sound for the first 8 months.Suddenly both handsets stopped taking a charge.No big deal, just replace the batteries.That worked for the main phone but the extra handset will not charge, either in the additional charger or the main charger.Haven't tracked down the problem but will keep trying.

Great Phones
I read all the reviews before purchasing this phone set and everything that was mentioned about it was accurate more or less.

Speaker phone is much better than I thought it would be , my wife is constantly using it, even though she claimed she did not need a phone with extra features. The second handset which just needs to be plugged in allows us to have a phone in our living room without having to run wires ...perfect!! ( I live in an old house)
Only disadvantage, which I find retarded since it appears that they put a lot of thought into this phone is the fact that you cannot add a "1" in front of a number that appears on the caller id to store in the phone book or redial out. You have to delete the whole number and re-enter it.

I was aware of this b4 purchasing the phone, read it on the reviews but still gave the phones five stars anyway.

Its okay
Its just okay; 5.8G but my panasonic 2.4 has better sound quality to it. In this package you get two sets, master one and the other one. The only good thing is that the other set needs to be connected to the power socket only (no need to hook it up to the phone jack as long as the master base is hooked up) so it means you can place it anywhere in the house irrespective of having access to a phone jack nearby. Once again sound quality aint that good.
Addendum: Lately one of the handset is giving me problems; cant receive calls on this one.

No Headset Jack
I purchased this item through amazon partner circuitcity.

The extended techinical information about this phone is incorrect. There is no Headset jack. I wish I had gone to panasonic official site to confirm this. For me no headset jack means this phone is less then useless. I find it very strange that a phone of this price does not have headset jack. Needless to say I will be returning this phone soon as possible.

A good phone, not a great one
I bought the 5240 for my business and was happy with it right away.Since it's important for me to have my hands free while talking, I use a Panasonic headset (a cheapie).The voice quality is fine, and when I use the Voice Enhancement feature it's even better.I also have a wireless network (running at 2.8 GHz) and have run into no problems with the two frequencies running so close together.I'm able to walk well away from the base with no cut out problems, either.Talking Caller ID is cool, but not too useful.The handset by itself isn't too comfortable, but it's fine.

The main problem I've had is with the display on the handset.Suddenly, they became so dim I couldn't read them - but only on some of the menus.This became a little worse over the next week or so, so I exchanged.After looking at what was available, I exchanged it for another 5240 since I liked the first one so well.I ran into another display problem almost immediately with this one, but it wasn't bad enough to exchange.Six months later, I still have it and am living with the problem.When compared to sound quality, ease of use, and range, this is a minor problem.

Maybe they fixed it?
I read the other reviews for this and many of them complained that the person at the other end would hear your voice garbled or distorted if you got too close to the base unit.We just bought a KX-TG5243M (same as the 5240 but it comes packaged with 3 handsets) on May 27, 2005, and it does not have that problem.I have even held the handset with the antenna literally touching the base unit antenna, and the person I was talking to could hear me clearly.So I guess either the problem did not exist on every unit, or Panasonic has fixed it.
Other than that, the phone has everything we want, including some features that were sorely missing on our old Uniden TRU-5885:On it you could not have a conference call with both handsets - only with a handset and the speakerphone in the base unit.And every time the power went out I had to get the manual out to find out how to set the clock again, despite the fact that every time a call came in the Caller ID showed the CORRECT time.Panasonic has managed to make their phone smart enough to use the caller ID info to update its clock automatically.

About 3 months and problem free
I have had this system with one extension phone for about 3 months now and have had no problems with it. Great sound quality, no glitches in performance or operation.

Loved the features, hated the sound quality
I bought this unit because of other reviews I had read concerning wireless connections and cordless phones.Well, they were wrong.The extra handset was in the room with our wireless router for our computers.You had to leave the room to get a phone call.There was nothing but static on the phone.

The base unit had some problems too with sound.It would screech and whistle about 15-20 seconds into a call, and that was standing right in front of the base.

I really did like some of the features like the speaker phone/intercom.All the whistles and bells aren't worth anything if the phone doesn't work.I took this back and got an AT & T E5960.So far we are satisfied with that one.

One other feature is missing
My old Panasonic answering machine had the ability to call a pre-programmed number to notify that there is a message. They call it 'to page', but since the pagers have long gone - it just calls my cell phone and hangs up. That is the feature that I will miss a lot!

So far so good.
This is the third cordless phone I have bought in a month. The first, a Motorola, had terrible echoes and sound. That one went back. The second, a GE, was fine, for the first three weeks. Then the answering machine shut down erasing all the messages every time I put the phone in the cradle. That one went back. I've only had the Panasonic a couple of days, cut so far so good. The sound is decent, though I would like the handset to be a little louder. But everything else works and I have to admit, the talking caller ID is pretty cool. Hopefully this one will keep working.
Update: A week later and still working. I just wanted to add, however, despite what the Amazon site says, this only has one handset and is not expandable.
One more cool feature I have found. You can subscribe to the Caller IQ serivce to get weather and other things on the phone. This is OK, but the best part is you can use the web site to import your Outlook contacts. Great phone
I have had this phone now about 3 months and I am VERY HAPPY with it. IT has all the things and want and many more, The hand sets are very clear and I love the fact I can check voice mail on any hand set that goes with it I do not have to run to the main answering machine to check the voice mail. The range of the hand sets is great had no problem at all with this.So far I love everything with this phone, It is much better than either of the last two phone I have had.

Pretty good phone, with some funky features...
I bought this phone (plus an additional handset) to replace my old Sony 2.4GHz phone. The old phone interfered with my home WiFi network. This new phone, although it is a dual-mode phone, claims not to interfere and so far that has been the case for me.

There are a number of nice features on this phone. Both the handsets and the base station have built-in speaker phones. The answering machine is easy to program. The handsets are easy to set up with the base station (a near impossibility with my old Sonys). The phones are reasonably stylish in a utilitarian sort of way and have enough heft that you won't mind using them.

The phones and base station have LCD displays for programming. The phone has a color display and you can choose "wallpaper" for it (right...). The spare handset I bought was only black and white (I could have chosen another color handset). By default it shows a smiley face. The ringers are a bit cloying (you can set them to play music or choose from several obnoxious ring styles). Here's the digital revolution turning something simple into a needlessly complex toy.

If you ignore all the stupid bells and whistles, though, the phone does everything I ask of it. It was very easy to setup and it works well. Other brands aren't that much better in terms of "silly quotient" and don't offer the range of useful features. I would give this phone 3 1/2 stars if I could, but it's pretty good.

Beware... it's another dual-band device

Unpretentious yet powerful
I have *fallen in love* with this phone since I bought it a week back. this is at the lower end of the panasonic 5.8ghz line of models.

These are the reasons I like the fone

* 5.8ghz which will not interrupt with my wi-fi networks
* Handset speakerphone - Very good quality
* 3-4 monotone and 3 music ringers (can be customized for callers)
* Handset light indicator - 3 colors - again can be customized for callers - Useful when you want silent option
* Excellent range and call quality

It does not have the following features

* Dual Keypad
* Ringer for base
* Answering machine

ANOTHER GREAT PANASONIC PRODUCT!
I've only had this phone a few days, but I'm very happpy
with it! My main concern was the speakerphone. I'm happy
to say it works perfectly. It's very loud, and very clear!
The extra large buttons are a plus for me, because my fingers
are very weak. The only feature this phone doesn't have is,
caller I.D., I don't use this feature anyway, so no big deal.
If you're looking for a great speakerphone, with a great

Good phone for a good price
Since I knew Panasonic was known for their phones, I purchased this answering machine/phone for a good price here at Amazon.

What I like about this phone.
- It has an All-Digital Answering System. A microship records your greeting message. But what if you don't want to record a mesage? Well, it comes with a pre-recorded message from the factory. So you don't need to record a greeting message if you think you don't have a good voice or something like that. This answering machine lets you record 15 minutes of messages. It may not be enough for some people, but it's enough for me.
- When you play the messages, the phone tells you the day and the time each of the messages was recorded.
- You can listen to your messages from another phone. For example, if you're on vacation, you can call your house from the hotel and listen to your messages and delete them if you want.
- It has Voice Enhacer Technology. It helps clarify and improve sound reception.
- It has 7 selectable ringtones. For people who don't want just a plain ring.
- Handset Speakerphone. This feature is important when you're calling a company and you have to go through their menu. With other cordless phones you have to listen to the menu, take the phone away from your ear, look down at the keypad, and dial. With this phone you don't have to do that. Just press the Hands-Free button and you can listen to the menu without having the phone close to your ear. You can adjut the volume if you want.
- It comes with a Shoulder Rest Attachment and a Belt Clip.
- It's wall mountable.
- If you don't have it on the wall, you can have it on your desk or table. It has a special back so that it doesn't sit flat on the surface.
- You can place the phone on the base in two ways. The picture shows one way to place it (showing the keypad). You can also place so that it shows the back instead.
- Lighted Keypad.

Good quality/reasonable price
We bought this phone about 6 months ago and it's met all my expectations since then.Sound come through clearly and I enjoy the features it has - answering machine, caller ID, speakerphone, dual handsets.It was easy to set up and it's easy to program.From what we found, it was very reasonably priced considering all the features, and dual handsets makes it like 2 phones for the price of one!I'm very happy with my purchase.

Dead after 3 months
I was actually quite happy with the phone regarding features and reception, until this week! Realizing that I have not heard the phone ring for a couple(?) of days, I glanced at the base unit to see if everything was alright. There I spied no lights at all glowing. I checked the outlet for power, and then the power transformer from the phone- both were working fine. Re-read the instruction manual for any reset tips, but the base unit was dead. I have 3 other Panasonic phones in the house, but this model is the first dud I have ever had from this company.

Great deal on great phone.
We've had this set for a few months now, and it works great. Always clear, never drops, works all around the house and out to the street. Handset-to-handset conference function is definitely a plus. I'd recommend to anyone!

So Far I Love It
This phone is everything my Uniden wasn't. Easy to set up, easy to use, good sound on the handset speakerphone. I can use it out in the yard. Plus it's a little longer, so that when I hold it to my ear, the mouthpiece is near my mouth, instead of the middle of my cheek. What a concept! Also, coolness: there is a red ring-shaped LED on the top of the antenna, which lights up when you have a message on the answering machine (or when you push the "find handset" button on the base unit.) Anyway, I think it's a very good unit, I hope it lasts. My old, tank-tough Uniden lasted many years, the new Uniden replacement only lasted a few months, died twice, and the second time, Uniden wanted 48 bucks to fix it, even though it was still under warranty. To heck with that.

Terrible reception
We bought this phone system knowing that Panasonic is a decent brand, but were completely disappointed. The phones have a terrible static noise and calls fade in/out. I looked in the manual for troubleshooting tips and it suggested moving the phones away from other electric devices, which I did, but it didn't help at all.
