1-0 out of 5 stars no support, plus hardware problems
I went through two of these cameras at a local store, the pan/tilt wouldn't work.

email (twice) to tech "support" had no response.
email to customer service bounced.
no phone number listed on web site

Though google, I found a company # and spoke to a tech. They said they have had a bad production run and the pan/tilt didn't work due to motor problems. So much for QA.Could RMA, but they don't cross ship, and I don't trust them to wait.I'm going to return #2.

Camera offically only works with ActiveX (Internet Explorer) and only one user can connect to the camera.

Using a perl module at http://www.kahunaburger.com/blog/archives/000157.html I was able to write a script to capture an image and store it to disk once per minute. (To build a time-lapse photo). Not easy to work with.

Image quality good, but without the pan/tilt I might as well buy a cheaper camera. I certainly wouldn't trust the company.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality /no tech support/false advertised specs
Buyer beware!
Every single product I tested made by Veo does not perform half of what is claimed on the box or advertised by sellers. Quality is simply not acceptable if you will make it work.

Dont expect ANY support! There is no 800 number, nor filing out customer support form on veo.com brings any results. After trying couple of times with the letter below, I did not get any reply from them, not even that my email was received!

I guess VEO mentality is:
-we will make a crappy product,
-we will make up stories about performance,
-we dont care if product does not even work,
-we dont have to spend any money for tech support,
-we will take your money and run,
but some fools will still buy our products!

Here is what was emailed to company:

This is the third Veo camera exchanged from Circuit City that I am not able to make it work correctly.

Computer: 2 years old Dell Dimension XP, SP1, with ad on PCI 5port USB 2 card made by Ratoc.

Camera: Velocity Connect

Problem: -after installing the software and connecting the camera, "Found new hardware wizard" tries to install the software, but the result is "Cannot Install this Hardware, because the wizard cannot find the necessary software..." Pointing to CD, does not find drivers either.

It could be the USB card. If you want to know more about Ratoc USB2 card or problems people have with them, follow the link: http://www.usbman.com/Reviews/ratoc_usb_20_5.htm

But those problems seem to be with USB 1 devices. And this Ratoc card on my computer works fine with HP Laser printer, Pioneer DVD burner, etc.

Camera works with usb1, but the reason I bought it is because of the resolution.

The low light resolution is horrible! What a lie on the box where it states "ultra low light lens"

I feel sorry about VEO products, because I am not able to make them work on none of my computers. Other product I had to exchange for this Velocity camera was VEO Network Observer. The software could not install on none of the computers. This specific Dell mentioned above and other computer with DVD drive. The CD simply could not run, just kept spinning. CD itself was without any flaws.
The camera could be accessed with the browser , then worked for 2 minutes and then all it could do is show vertical streaks .

This camera I exchanged for the same one thinking that installing software would help, but had the same results. Even making the camera work, quality can be described "could not catch a thiev"

Would never ever buy anything made under Veo name

3-0 out of 5 stars I Expected More
Compared to the other netcams out there that have built-in PAN and TILT functions, the price makes it a great deal. I wanted to use it to create a time-lapsed movie of my backyard going from a dirt lot to a personal oasis 8-). I was disappointed that the provided software only gave me basic functions (record, snapshot, pan, tilt, zoom). I WISH it had capabilities like
- scheduled monitoring (ex. record from 8am to 5pm),
- software-based motion detection (currently requires an optional sensor),
- 'take a snapshot every X seconds' feature.
Also, it sucks that only one user can access the camera at a time. Has anyone figured out a way to stream the video (or snapshots) over the Internet (so a bunch of people can view the webcam)?
Currently, the only third-party software application I could find that supports the Veo Observer is Netcam Watcher Professional by Beau Software (www.beausoft.com).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Webcam for the money
I was a bit harsh on this camera when I first started messing with it, but after a week I've warmed up to it. The images are decent, the auto white balance is above average, the built-in microphone works well, and the integrated pan & tilt puts this unit above the other web cams in its price range. Compared to the other web cams I have, wireless as well as wired, this one is well worth the money.

Now for a small reality check. It's not a 640x480 camera, its 320x240. You have the option to enlarge the image in the application's built-in web browser, but it just doubles the 320x240 image. Forget about the digital zoom. The image is nice though, well above average for a web cam with sharp focus, good contrast and excellent color control. You can opt to allow the system to run on auto or manually select exposure as well as red, blue, and green levels.

The description below the camera on this page says: "Microphone required for sending audio" which is confusing. It has a microphone built-in. You can add an external microphone to the camera if you like, but the inputs are bare wire terminals instead of mini plugs. The built-in mic should be good enough for most uses.

The Veo also has a display that shows you the last three digits of it's IP address, so if you have a DHCP server on your network you can see what address it's been assigned. The kit comes with a low profile bracket and mounting plate that lets you attach the camera to a wall so that it can cover just about any room using it's pan & tilt controls.

I plan on buying a couple more of these things.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works fine, but limited software
The camera works ok and image is reasonable quality. It has one significant drawback: only one user can view it a time. This may be ok if you know you are only going to view from one location, but otherwise this is a pain.If you accidentally leave it logged in somewhere and try to view it from another machine, you're stuck.

The viewing software is a Windows ActiveX control, so there is no way to view the camera from other operating systems. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for indoor / Terrible for outdoor
CONS :
- Be careful, use it only indoor. Dont expect to use it outdoor ! If its sunny day, you will see nothing.
- You cant upload image to a FTP, you will need the new model (and more expensive) Veo Wireless Observer XT.

PROS :
- quite easy to install
- remote function is great
- nice design

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works well!
I've had this for 3 months now. After taking a little time to set-up (especially figuring out how to use the IP re-direct service) this camera has worked flawlessly.I have the motion detector and know when someone is in the house through email.I can even see these on my treo!I can then log-in, view, listen and pan without any difficulties. It is on my "secure" wireless network at home and I haven't had to do any resets like I've had to do for other products. For this price, you can't go wrong - just don't get frustrated if you have to read a little about dynamic IP addressing and wireless networks. The only improvement I would make is to allow video clips to be sent when motion is detected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and efficient
Setup's a toughie, no doubt, but I bagged the complex manual and went right to the telephone tech support. After a 15 min. wait, they walked me through the setup in about 45 mins.Works great and compared to other systems its cheap.

Note:For remote viewing you'll most likely need a web portal that will offer a "static" web address.TZO.com will do it for 25 bucks a year.

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget internet access
One other reviewer praises the ability to watch his kids in the other room. I agree the camera is useable for this. However, access over the internet for me, so far, has been impossible. I have jumped through all the hoops such as firmware and software updates, followed the very specific instructions supplied by veo for my linksys wireless ap/router, and tried using a different port than 80. I have tried and tried but now must face the fact that I cannot recommend this product in it's present form. A good idea but does not perform as advertised. Something better will come soon I think.

Some pros: Motion detector attachment works well although you can only send the resulting email snapshot to one address. This means you cannot email your phone as an alarm and at the same time have the snapshot sent to a remote computer that burglers will not be taking with them when they leave. You get either a virtual alarm or an email snapshot. Not both. I would think veo would have thought this through and could have easily had this feature.

In closing, obviously I had some idea that I could use this camera for security monitoring over the net. This has not been the case for me and I am not a total amatuer. I usually work stuff like this out.

Oh, and dont let me forget to mention that there is NO telephone support of any kind and my email went unanswered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally an awesome 802.11 Networking Camera
I hooked it up to my Linksys wireless network and I can now see my kids in the play room while I am working.Very easy to install, I was blown away with the remote pan and tilt features. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cam
This is the second web cam I have owned. The first was a $20 Intel cam, which I didn't like.I paid more than $50 (around $70) and I am pleased.

I don't take photos, nor do I record videos with it, so I cannot comment on those features.

I do use it every now & then to let my family & friends see me.I have a torchiere lamp with a 20W fluorescent bulb in it angled toward the lens.I can see myself just as well as the my family & friends can.

I recommend this webcam.

2-0 out of 5 stars resolution not likely
Just got the camera and read the fine print found only on the bottom of the box.It says, "Resolutions supported by hardware for third party software compatibility. Not supported by Creative Studio."The software it comes with only supports the usual 640x480 resolution.I didn't see any advantage from the optics or the USB 2.0 functionality, but then mine came with a busted focusing lens.I'm sure Amazon will take the return no problem, and the free shipping that was supposed to take 5-7 days miraculously brought me the camera in a single day, but I won't be ordering another one all the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
This was my first vid cam so I didn't have anything to compare it with. The only person whom I talked with previously on vid conference had an old vid cam so I didn't see a big difference. Then a family member called and said he just bought a new vid cam (a Logitech Quickcam 4000) and I couldn't believe the difference. I can see now why the Veo Velocity is getting such a bad rap. It's well deserved. It's very grainy and jittery, and doesn't work consistent in any light, not to mention very poor in low light, even with the 2.0 USB card. I'm not much into the vid conference thing, but since it looks like I'm going to be in touch with my family member now on a steady basis, I went out and snagged a Logitech 4000 and am very pleased with it.

Don't settle for the Veo Velocity cam. If you are communicating with someone who is using a Logitech, it will only remind you what poor quality your Veo is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The previous reviews for this product are right on the money... This cam looks great in the daytime with the shades open, but once night falls, in order to use it , my computer desk has to look like a photographers studio.. I have several lights blinding me just to get a decent picture.. also I find I am constantly having to adjust light to make my image viewable. When I bought this cam, I also fell for the impressive stats, but they all go out the window at dusk..

2-0 out of 5 stars To dark
I have a problem getting the cam to turn up the brightness. the adjustments don't seem to work.
the camera doesn't work unless I point a bright light and what I'm taking a picture at, even in the daylight. ... Read more
