5-0 out of 5 stars The best cordless phone that I have used
Pros:
- sounds nice and clear for both handset and speaker phone.
- speaker phone on both base and handset.effectively makes it two phones, which means if you suddenly find your handset out of juice, you can still use the speaker phone on the base, instead of having to get up and run to the corded phone in the other room.
- NiMH batteries are better than NiCad in general.
- small and feels sturdy.compare to the panasonic kx-tg2227 I had both the base and handset are smaller.

Cons:
- 8 uninspiring, ring tones.and except for a couple, too high-pitched.
- there are 3 voice mailboxes, and there is no way to disable just one or two.

1-0 out of 5 stars Phone broke 2 weeks after the warranty ended
So, I liked this phone just fine while it worked.

But it broke 2 weeks after the end of the 1 year warranty. Now the handset can't find the base, and it beeps approximately 5 times/minute while looking for its electronic mate (which it finds about 1/2 the time). When it can find the base, one can speak on the phone.

Obviously I have only 1 data point to offer, and so can't make meaningful generalizations about product durability. But our Panasonic cordless system (bought june 2002) still works fine. And for an original $110 cost, I did think the Motorola would work for longer than 54 weeks w/out breaking. (Works out to $2/week in cost).

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked for 366 days after purchase, then broke
I was very pleased with this phone ... as long as it worked. It stopped working just after 1 year from the date of purchase (really 11 months from the date of receipt, given Amazon.com left it on back order for 1 month. Which I learned now counts against my warranty time. Who knew?) For $105 I would have liked it work work beyond a few days past the warranty. But that is just me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal Clear Quality of Motorola 5.8GHz Cordless Phone
Motorola 5.8GHz Cordless Speakerphone w/Answering System/Caller Id is a great buy for many a reason.
a)Crystal Clear Quality -- I am speechless by the clarity of voice...have not experienced this kind of quality before.
b) Speaker-phone on the handset and on the Base equipment is a cool feature.
c) Three mail-boxes -- Wow...I've one for me, one for my wife and one for my children.
d)Voice-mail beeper -- this draws your attention to a new voice-mail...beeps softly without annoying you until you listen to your voice-mail.
e) Great Price -- of course, via AMAZING Amazon.com.
g) Handset expandability -- can expand upto 6 handsets (thoughI find this redundant for me)but quiteconvenient for a large family or a small business.

Definitely, you'd not 'hang up' on it since it's quite 'engaging' and winsome besides its crystal-clear quality.

Thank you.
Ravi

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sound Quality
We purchased a competing phone, but took it back because I was not pleased with the sound quality. This phone is as clear as a bell.

It would be nice if the menu was a little easier. It would be nice if the main base unit was a speaker phone too.It would have been nice too if all of the buttons on the phone lit up.Only the number pad glows. So basically, you can dial the number in the dark, but unless you are not familiar with the phone, you will not be able to do anything else :)These are not enough to lower the ratings though.

Otherwise, the phone has it all plus quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Phone
I spent quite a large amount of time researching cordless phones before deciding to purchase this unit. There have been many complaints about Panasonic's slightly older lines of 2.4 and 5.8 GHz phones. However, this phone appears to be of an entirely different desgin as evidenced by the slimmer handset form factor.I have had this phone for a few weeks and have not run into any performance issues.

While the phone suffers from a few minor flaws such as having to pay to download ring tones on each handset and having handsets register missed calls when another handset is used to answer the phone, these types of issues are pretty much omnipresent in the current generation of multihandest/expandable handset phone systems.

This product is not perfect but seems much more reliable and than many of the other top of the line phone systems out there.I highly reccomend this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this phone!
This is the third time I have bought a phone system with one base and multiple handsets, and this is the best one I have used so far.The reasons range from trivial (I like the sounds of the ring tones), to significant (you can use multiple handsets at once).

The two most important features for me before purchase were:

1) 5.8 Ghz spread spectrum. My old phone was a 2.4 Ghz, and it would occasionally interfere with my wireless computer network. It was very annoying. My moving to a phone that uses a different frequency range, the problem is completely avoided.

2) The ability to use multiple handsets at the same time.Another phone I previously had would not let two handsets talk in the same conversation at the same time. This was just miserable. This phone lets you do this without any problems.

After purchase, I found that it had some other amazing features:

1) Each phone has a unique ID, and you can conference between the handsets. With the range this phone has, my wife and I now carry them around outside (we have a 3 acre yard) and use them to talk to each other.

2) The phone has an AMAZING speakerphone capability on each handset! This was not on my radar at all, but it is really useful.

3) When playing back messages it has recorded, it shows you the caller ID entry for the message.Really nice touch.

4) While I don't know much about it yet, I can apparently keep the numbers in the phone's phonebook in sync with those stored in Outlook in my computer.I can also download new ringtones, but that's not so importent to me.More info on this is available at www.openlcr.com.

The ONLY annoying thing about this phone is that when you answer a call on one handset, the other two handsets register it as a 'missed call' in the caller ID list.I considered rating it 4 stars for this, but once you get used to it, the rest of the features more than make up for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
This phone has all the features anyone could possibly need. It's also relatively easy to figure out, since the interace is similar to your average cell phone's menu-style interface. One thing I was surprised by though, is if you pay to download a ringtone, you only get it on ONE of the handsets! You have to pay 3 times to put the same ring tone on all the handsets. I got burned by this, and it's why I'm giving it 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST
Save your time, and your money...this is the phone you want. I have tried them all, and Panasonics last for years and never let us down.We use this system on our Voip, Packet 8 service and it works perfectly. It is so loaded with handy and useful features, that we are spoiled by it.We rush to answer the phone as this is such a pleasure to use.Panasonic really outdid themselves with the 5433, we just love it.You enter all your phone numbers in one handset and it will copy them over to the other two handsets for you...one at a time or all at once, truly a neat feature. You set the time on one set, any one you like, and the other two handsets pick it up automatically.Did I mention we are happy? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice 2nd Gen phone system
I junked my Motorola MD681 for this phone.I was skeptical about jumping into another wireless phone system, but I needed phones in some areas where there are typically no jacks (garage, attic). After doing some research, I decided to go with Panasonics' new phone system.Unlike Motorola, I see all types of older 2.4Ghz expandable Panasonic phones still available for purchase from the popular retailers. So, this new phone should be supported for some time.Anyway, into the details.

The Good
1. Handset : this phone feels good in the hand and on the ear.Though not overly heavy, it has a nice weight and doesn't creak or flex through normal use unlike some other less expensive handsets. Most of the color on the handset is protected by a clear acrylic, so it will retain its color for years. The LCD screen is very large, much larger than I am used to.It does show a great deal of information legibly. It has an orange backlight that illuminates the screen as well as all of the buttons. Most of the navigation is done with a 4-way joystick and 2 soft buttons which makes most things fairly intuitive.

2. The Base : It is small considering how many buttons and functions it performs. It is however missing a large display for showing callerID information. However, most of the time I will look to the phone to provide this info, and it leaves only one CID list to maintain. On my old system, the base would always show 50 new calls because I never went through the CID list on the base, so this is a plus for me.

3. Sound : Okay, this is a highly subjective area, but I like the sound of the Panasonic. The speakerphone, on the handset, is probably one of the best I have used. The mic is sensitive enough that we don't have to yell to be heard, and the speaker provides consistent volume and good clarity. There is a voice enhancement filter that you can turn on or off, or have the phone decide when to use it.I have it set to automatic, and I can't tell if it is on without looking at the display. It is never on for domestic calls, but for those overseas calls it activates and the calls sound like domestic calls with a wee bit of static.I have not done an A/B comparison to see how a long distance call sounds with it on and off, so this could be a gimmick. There are the standard beepy, computerized ringtones included, but you can record your own ringtones into the phone from any source you want.I haven't played with this yet, but the demos that are included with the phone sound as good as could be expected from a telephone.I guess I would put them above cell phone quality audio of the same type.

4. Convenience : The thing that I love about this phone is that you can check/delete/save your answering machine messages from any handset. If there is CID info, you can return the call immediately by pressing talk and the phone will dial the number. The other thing I love about this phone is the shared phonebook. No more looking for the phone with so-and-so's number on it, or having to program 4 phones with the same number, they will all have the same phonebook. This phone also has a distictive ring capacity. You can program anyone in your phonebook to flash the LED in one of three colors (blue/green/orange) as well as play a certain ring tone, including the user recorded types.Plus the standard intercom, call transfers, 3-way calling that is pretty much standard with these types of phones.

5. Extras : This system comes with a feature called CallerIQ.You have to signup with a 3rd party company openLCR.For $10 every 4 months, they will allow you to call them and download weather, stocks, sports scores, horoscopes and lottery results. Ringtones aren't included and cost extra and are of the downloaded cell phone ringtone sytle. You can also have your phonebook uploaded for safe keeping and reference while away from home. Not sure if this is a plus or minus, but getting the 1 to 3 days of weather on your phone is a nice little thing.I have not tried this myself.

6. Range : This phone covers my whole house with no static or dropouts.I have not attempted to walk down the street with it because I probably never will, but a walk to the mailbox proved its range to be adequate, especially with the base at the other end of the house.I have also not noticed any intereference with my wireless network, but truth be told you shouldn't with any 5.8ghz phone.

The Not So Good
1. The Phone : The buttons are small. Not very small, but noticeably smaller than normal. The Talk/Off/Speakerphone buttons and the Soft Buttons are tiny, and may be hard to hit for those people with big/wide fingers.

2. The Base : I would not suggest mounting this on your wall. The bracket supplied essentially holds the base horizontally as if it were laying on a table, so it just juts out into the room instead for hanging more or less flush.Needless to say, my base is resting upon a table now.The base also was not intended to be the primary source of input. The LCD panel is small, and only displays the number of calls on the answering machine.A small green light on the base will let you know if the line is being used.I wish there was more info displayed on the base, but the phone is your primary device for accessing the system, so I guess they're keeping it simple.

3. Sound : Other than the questionable effectiveness of the voice enhancer, I don't have much to complain about here.

4. Convenience : How hard is it to name the various phones?I don't want to have to tell people phone 2 is in the basement, or phone 3 is the guest room. Why can't we label phones or just pick from a list of common rooms when we associate a phone to the base?I deduct .5 stars for this because everything else is there, why not this?It seems like a total no brainer.

5. Extras : I'm not sure about the 3rd party site for CallerIQ.They mention on the site that it is a long distance call, but they don't say to where. So, you figure 30-90 seconds a day to download the information. That's quite a bit of long distance calling that you have to pay for on top of the service charge. No too sure about this one.

So, this turned out to be much longer than I had ever intended it to be.So, I'll attempt to summarize for those who don't want to slog through my rambling.

The Panasonic TG5571M is a solid phone with a good feature set and some very nice convenience features added in.It allows you to check the answering machine from any phone in the system, it also has one unified phonebook that is shared between all phones, and it has great sound and sufficient range. However, it is missing the capability to name the various satellite phones, the buttons on the phone are slightly smaller than normal and the wall mount projects the phone into the room.I'm giving it 5 stars, because I can't give 4.5. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Below Par: Makes Background Noise
Every feature said to be available exists, but, over several months, the quality has dropped to worthlessness.

Cons
The secondary handset recharger stopped recharging.

Both handsets crackle and fade. Others hear me fine, but I am unable to hear them. New batteries did not help.

The phonebook is rudimentary. The Nokia cell phone I received free has a better phonebook. Each name only gets one number.

The handset is heavy. For the price, some of the weight should be engineered out.

Pros
When things were working, the volume was easy to change.

Standard rechargeable batteries.

Unsure: I never used the answering machine feature. I have voice mail, and did not find it necessary. My opinion of the phone does not include this unused feature.

Overall, I am disappointed. Hopefully, their customer service people will provide a solution.

I realize many people have found the VTech 5850 a fine phone, but I do not. Maybe I bought a lemon. VTech's reputation is strong, and better luck might be found with this popular phone. I am bound in this review to provide my experience, and that experience was that of a sub-par cordless telephone.

4-0 out of 5 stars powerful phones
I am looking for a cordless phone with the longest range or close to 1/2 mile. The most powerful I see are the 5.8 Ghz.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it !!!!
This is the best phone i've ever used.It is so clear that my friends could hear the clock on the wall ticking!Easy to follow directions, great features and the answering machine is wonderful.I highly recommend this phone. And, the second phone doesn't require a phone jack. How sweet is that???!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Watch out
This is a wonderful phone system and I was going to give it
five stars until one of the most important features I got it
for, broke.

I've had Vtech phones for a long time and found them superior. This time, they've changed the belt clip to not only have very sharp tines that dig into and tear clothing, but after only four months of use, the vicious clip has snapped and according to the 'customer service' line, can't be replaced as they are available only with the system at purchase. After a strong complaint to customer service, they offered to send me one when they might get one in their stock. These clips are apparently unavailable in the stores, although during my first questions to the service rep, I was told to go to the store to buy another. The belt clips of the older Vtech were a well designed, didn't tear clothing and were very sturdy, after years of use, still intact. This new one, after only four months is useless. If this feature is important to you, you might want to look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This phone has some good options, just not ones that I use. For instance, it does not have a speed dial option. It has what's called a phone book. You have to scroll through a menu to pick what number you want to dial. I use my speed dial to put in my calling card 800 number and then another speed dial to put in the pin. Now I have to scroll through to get the pin number in time to enter it when it's asked for. What a pain.

I put this phone where my old cordless was and there's nothing but static and this tin can sound. I have changed the location of this phone to 7 different spots, no luck. It still sounds terrible.

It is very uncomfortable to hold up to your ear. The ringer choices are so obnoxious that I have the ringer off and use the old phone just so something rings when a call is coming in.

I don't have caller ID in my area so I cannot comment on how well that works.

The answering machine is nice but you have to be very careful as to when you hit the delete button to delete a message. If you hit it at the end of a message it will delete the NEXT message not the one you were just listening to.

For the money this phone is a real disappointment. It's such a hassle to return it that I guess I'm stuck with it until some friend needs a phone and I'll give it to them or put it in a rummage sale. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Worked great for a couple of weeks
I did a lot of research (consumer reports, amazon, etc) and decided to get this phone. It has worked excellent for a couple of weeks. Now all of the sudden, the static, or interference, has been unbearable.Like the other reviewer said, you can't change channels or anything. The user manual says "1)Keep the handset away from microwave ovens, computers, remote control toys, wireless microphones, alamrm systems, intercoms, room monitors, fluorescent lights, and electrical appliances. 2) Move to another location or turn off the source of interference." Are they kidding? Power down everything, then use the phone.I am going to return and buy another brand.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Sound Quality - Took it back
    Pros:

This phone has it all.The menu system was really easy. The room monitoring feature was cool.I liked the fact that all of the buttons glowed (Think about it, if you are in the dark, what good does it do you if you only see the number pad?You may need to transfer a call, adjust volume, etc.).

    Cons:

As easy as the phone was, we took it back because I was not pleased with the sound quality.Using the phone people that called me sounded great. However, people thought that I sounded fuzzy. The sound quality is okay, but was not as good as my current 900 and 2.1.Due to that fact we purchased a competing 5.8 phone and the sound quality was as clear as a bell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sound quality!
The sound quality is really incredibly clear. The double handset is a great feature.

The only downside is the handset display is a little 1977. I think the resolution is like 30x30 pixel LCD display. But I couldn't care less, the sound is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Phone!Great!Except for some annoying flaws
We love this phone....had to upgrade to 5.8 after our 18 month old threw the 2.4 Vtech in the bathtub. It is great except for two major flaws which make us want to return it!

The talk/hangup/flash button is placed dead center just below the earpiece. When I am holding the phone without my hands between my ear and shoulder, it routinely hangs up!I suppose my cheek pushes the talk/hangup/flash button every single time I pick up the baby...it is truly an annoying problem, since I rarely have a hand free to hold the phone.
    2. You cannot simply enter long distance phone numbers from caller id into the phone book.If you need to dial a 1 before the area code in your zone, you cannot simply store a number from caller id to the phone book. While storing, you have to basically memorize or write down the number on a scratch of paper, delete the number on the screen with the keypad, enter the number 1 and then the number you are trying to remember or have written down.It is a pain in the neck, especially when you CAN edit the name when storing from caller id to the phone book, it does not make sense.
Other than those two items, I love this phone, but I am afraid that the hanging up problem is going to make me have to return it...such a bummer because it really answers all our needs in every other way.
    Too bad Uniden....

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice features but can't execute the basics
I bought this phone to replace a Uniden expandable 2.4 Ghz model that interfered with my wireless network. But for that, I was very happy with the phone system. So I figured an upgrade to a 5.8 Ghz model from Uniden should provide me with the same features and benefits with no interference, yes?Well, after hacksawing through the plastic packaging and setting it up, the best I can say is that the TRU8885 doesn't interfere with my network but it doesn't do much else either.

The big issues?1)The handsets take FIVE seconds to connect to the base.Yes, five seconds while my friends and family are forced to wait saying "Hello? Hello?" while I sit impotent waiting for the phone to establish contact.2)Once I actually connect, the reception is terrible!Constant static, electronic squeals, etc. such that I can't hear what the other caller is saying unless they speak loudly. And since there's no ability to change security channels, the only solution is to suffer through the call or hang up and redial.(This option is obviously not realistic if one is stuck in a Customer Service queue with significant wait times.)

I gave this item two stars because it does have a nice feature set.But if you can't actually use the phone, it's useless. Some reviewers appear to have no or few problems; others report similar disasterous results like me.So it's a crap shoot. As for me, I'm returning the phone and will probably end up with a higher-priced Panasonic. :-( ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Features missing
For prospective buyers:This phone has no ability to transfer the phone book between handsets and/or base unit (you have to enter the number manually into each one) and has really irritating ring choices.

2-0 out of 5 stars wireless LAN users please read this
I do not own this wireless phone
but I was checking the replacement of Vtech, which has a lot of static, and the voicemail records without any reason
when I check this model, I found this phone is running on both 2.4 and 5.8GHz (same as Vtech)
wireless owners, pls think twice before buying this unit

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good with wireless communication
This is the second 5.8 we purchased and returned. It disconnects our wireless internet when the phone is in use.We have to turn the computer off and reboot to get it back once the call has ended.Funny, the label states this was developed just for wireless connections. We tried the Panasonic KX-TG5240M first which I commented on too.

The sound quality seemed to be good and battery life okay, just kills the internet... Really liked some of the features, but was a little complicated to program. You only have to do that once, though. So, if you are not worried about the wireles internet and can work your way through the first programing, this might be a good choice.

We are on our third brand, Radio Shack's 5.8.Funny, it costa LOT less and so far no problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars main pros and cons
This phone is top of the line AT&T has to offer. It includes all the features we often use as consumers. However, remember that this technology is rather new to the cordless phones market. If people learn about them and find out how they are best used, it will minimize the complaining factor. The only negitive thing i see about these new phones is their warrenty. When you pay that high the warrenty should be at least 3 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars great phone!!
I just baught this phone today and I love it already. See we returned two other phones today, before we relized that 2.4 ghz phones are not compatible if you have a wirelss network in your house, so we went for this one at a 5.8 ghz freq. So if you have a wireless internet conection in your house save your time and go 5.8 like this phone here. The asortmant of rings are unique and not to anoying.
but, if you are looking to get a great phone for less ,about 40 dollars less, I really liked the one we had to return, just remember if you have wirelss internet dont bother. Here is the best for your buck and very sweet design, id say even nicer looking than this panasonic , wich is very sleek its self. It is made by General Electric (21028ge3) is the part number, there is one with an answering machine and one without, i baought both, the one without will save you even more if you allready have voicemail. Circuit city has allot of reviews for this phone, i recomend you look it up, just type that part number in google search and type reviews after it and it will pull up circuit city and the reviews. Anyways, i am not trying to take away from this Pannasonic, just wanted to say that both are great. Damien (mesa, Az) ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Panasonic's KX-TG5240M utilizes the 5.8 GHz band and digital frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology for increased call security and range and for less interference. This system comes with one handset but can accommodate up to three more (for a total of four). Compatible with Caller ID/call waiting, the KX-TG5240M offers a 50-station caller ID memory and dialer, accessible through the handset's three-line backlit LCD. It also features talking caller ID, which audibly announces who's calling through the handset and base speakerphones. Rounding out the main features are an integrated digital answering system and a light-up antenna on the handset that flashes to alert you to new calls and messages. The handsets also offer a variety of ring tones and melodies to choose from.

The KX-TG5240M allows you to pre-program frequently called numbers, even for chain dialing (ideal for calling automated systems that require a series of numeric inputs). It's also Caller IQ compatible, a service provides updates on weather, sports, horoscopes, and more; the information is sent directly to your telephone and displayed on the handset screen. (Caller ID and call waiting require subscription through your phone company. Caller IQ is a fee based service that requires registration.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A good phone, not a great one
I bought the 5240 for my business and was happy with it right away.Since it's important for me to have my hands free while talking, I use a Panasonic headset (a cheapie). The voice quality is fine, and when I use the Voice Enhancement feature it's even better.I also have a wireless network (running at 2.8 GHz) and have run into no problems with the two frequencies running so close together.I'm able to walk well away from the base with no cut out problems, either.Talking Caller ID is cool, but not too useful. The handset by itself isn't too comfortable, but it's fine.

The main problem I've had is with the display on the handset.Suddenly, they became so dim I couldn't read them - but only on some of the menus. This became a little worse over the next week or so, so I exchanged. After looking at what was available, I exchanged it for another 5240 since I liked the first one so well.I ran into another display problem almost immediately with this one, but it wasn't bad enough to exchange.Six months later, I still have it and am living with the problem. When compared to sound quality, ease of use, and range, this is a minor problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe they fixed it?
I read the other reviews for this and many of them complained that the person at the other end would hear your voice garbled or distorted if you got too close to the base unit.We just bought a KX-TG5243M (same as the 5240 but it comes packaged with 3 handsets) on May 27, 2005, and it does not have that problem.I have even held the handset with the antenna literally touching the base unit antenna, and the person I was talking to could hear me clearly. So I guess either the problem did not exist on every unit, or Panasonic has fixed it.
Other than that, the phone has everything we want, including some features that were sorely missing on our old Uniden TRU-5885:On it you could not have a conference call with both handsets - only with a handset and the speakerphone in the base unit. And every time the power went out I had to get the manual out to find out how to set the clock again, despite the fact that every time a call came in the Caller ID showed the CORRECT time.Panasonic has managed to make their phone smart enough to use the caller ID info to update its clock automatically.

5-0 out of 5 stars About 3 months and problem free
I have had this system with one extension phone for about 3 months now and have had no problems with it. Great sound quality, no glitches in performance or operation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Loved the features, hated the sound quality
I bought this unit because of other reviews I had read concerning wireless connections and cordless phones.Well, they were wrong. The extra handset was in the room with our wireless router for our computers. You had to leave the room to get a phone call. There was nothing but static on the phone.

The base unit had some problems too with sound. It would screech and whistle about 15-20 seconds into a call, and that was standing right in front of the base.

I really did like some of the features like the speaker phone/intercom.All the whistles and bells aren't worth anything if the phone doesn't work.I took this back and got an AT & T E5960.So far we are satisfied with that one.

4-0 out of 5 stars One other feature is missing
My old Panasonic answering machine had the ability to call a pre-programmed number to notify that there is a message. They call it 'to page', but since the pagers have long gone - it just calls my cell phone and hangs up. That is the feature that I will miss a lot!

Also, I don't see it offered at Amazon, but Panasonic also has model KX-TG5243: same as this one but with three handsets. If you are planning to buy this and a handset - 5243 combination is cheaper ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good.
This is the third cordless phone I have bought in a month. The first, a Motorola, had terrible echoes and sound. That one went back. The second, a GE, was fine, for the first three weeks. Then the answering machine shut down erasing all the messages every time I put the phone in the cradle. That one went back. I've only had the Panasonic a couple of days, cut so far so good. The sound is decent, though I would like the handset to be a little louder. But everything else works and I have to admit, the talking caller ID is pretty cool. Hopefully this one will keep working.
Update: A week later and still working. I just wanted to add, however, despite what the Amazon site says, this only has one handset and is not expandable.
One more cool feature I have found. You can subscribe to the Caller IQ serivce to get weather and other things on the phone. This is OK, but the best part is you can use the web site to import your Outlook contacts. Then you can check the ones you want on your phone and they are automatically downloaded to the address book in the phone. Saves lots of work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
I have had this phone now about 3 months and I am VERY HAPPY with it. IT has all the things and want and many more, The hand sets are very clear and I love the fact I can check voice mail on any hand set that goes with it I do not have to run to the main answering machine to check the voice mail. The range of the hand sets is great had no problem at all with this.So far I love everything with this phone, It is much better than either of the last two phone I have had.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good phone, with some funky features...
I bought this phone (plus an additional handset) to replace my old Sony 2.4GHz phone. The old phone interfered with my home WiFi network. This new phone, although it is a dual-mode phone, claims not to interfere and so far that has been the case for me.

There are a number of nice features on this phone. Both the handsets and the base station have built-in speaker phones. The answering machine is easy to program. The handsets are easy to set up with the base station (a near impossibility with my old Sonys). The phones are reasonably stylish in a utilitarian sort of way and have enough heft that you won't mind using them.

The phones and base station have LCD displays for programming. The phone has a color display and you can choose "wallpaper" for it (right...). The spare handset I bought was only black and white (I could have chosen another color handset). By default it shows a smiley face. The ringers are a bit cloying (you can set them to play music or choose from several obnoxious ring styles). Here's the digital revolution turning something simple into a needlessly complex toy.

If you ignore all the stupid bells and whistles, though, the phone does everything I ask of it. It was very easy to setup and it works well. Other brands aren't that much better in terms of "silly quotient" and don't offer the range of useful features. I would give this phone 3 1/2 stars if I could, but it's pretty good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware... it's another dual-band device
This one looked so good, so I went to Circuit City yesterday to take a look.Right on the box, it brags about using 5.8 GHz AND 2.4 GHz to provide the best performance.Seems that all the so-called 5.8 GHz devices built by V-tech, including those V-tech builds for other companies like AT&T, are dual band.Beware, if you are worried about interference to your computer wireless network. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst battery life I have ever seen
My first concern about this phone was the battery. I noticed immediately that the battery never stopped charging. I contacted Motorola and asked if this was normal. They said, "Yes, it never stops charging." That is insane! You can destroy the batteries very quickly if you keep charging them non-stop. So far the battery life has been very poor. I've probably already damaged my battery. Do not buy this phone. You will be very unhappy. I've had a number of complaints that my voice was breaking up. I attributed that to my VoIP service (Vonage). But now I'm wondering if it wasn't the phone. The audio quality is also very poor.

1-0 out of 5 stars This phone shouldn't be on the market
What? No "0 star" option? That's what this POS phone system deserves.

I was seduced by its clean design and good looks, but I literally had to throw this phone and two expansion handsets away. The problems:

    (1) As other reviewers have noted, the menuing system was designed by an engineer with no interface design experience. Just basic things like putting "New Entry" as the first item on the Phonebook. Duh. That wouldn't fly after even the most rudimentary user testing. And, again, as others have noted, the "sharing phonebook" functionality described in the user manual DOES NOT WORK, which makes the phonebook somewhat useless.

    (2) Battery life *is* bad.

    (3) After using it for about a month there was terrible static on the line, even though the phone line checked out OK. I called Motorola and they said the phone should be 10 feet from any electrical appliance to avoid static. Huh? I think every household in America has a phone in the kitchen, where *appliances* are. What a joke.

    (4) When a message is left and the caller hangs up, there is a burst of loud static at the end of the message. It's incredibly annoying.

Bottom line: DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! It's garbage that should not be available for purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars What has happened to Motorola?
I've had the phone for about two months, and as others have said, the sound quality is bad. Also, the sound drops out from time-to-time so we constantly have to ask the person on the other end to repeat things because we miss sylables or words. The hand set lasts for about 30 minutes before it has to be recharged.

Several times per week (sometimes per day), when the handset is replaced in the charging cradle, the base unit locks up and becomes non-functional.The only fix is to remove AC power and batteries from the base unit.Motorola customer support just keeps sending me instructions for removing the batteries from the handset, even though I've repeatedly explained that the problem is with the base unit.

I've had enough lousy products from Motorola over the last couple years that I'm finally starting to get it -- they don't make good producst anymore (I can't stand waiting for my cell phone to "boot").

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
Finally, a cordless phone that sounds like a "good old" phone. ... meaning the calls sound better than any I've heard from a cordless. We like the handset grip and find it appealing.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Bad Experience
I bought this from Amazon along with an extra handset. My kids loved the features and the retro look. But the sound was awful, dropping syllables, and sometimes whole words, of the person on the line so you had to guess what they were saying.Motorola tech support told me to move the phone away from all interference: refridgerators, stereos, lamps.Lamps?"I thought the 5.8 GHz was meant to resist interference.""No sir, these phones are very sensitive."So I found a corner of my house away from everything, even lamps.Same problem.I returned it to Amazon, losing $40 in fees and postage.Bought a Uniden 5.8 GHzat Sears that turned out to have all the features plus crystal clear sound.Even right next to the lamp! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
Before I bought this phone, I had a 7-year-old Toshiba 2.4GHz phone and a 7-year-old Panasonic digital answering machine. I had to replace the phone because it interfered with our wireless network, and I figured I'd get a new answering machine at the same time - 7 years later, the technology must be better, I reasoned.

Not so. The sound quality on this phone OK, but worse than on my old phone. And the sound quality of the answering machine is unacceptaby muffled. But those are the first of several big disappointments. The phone has nearly no sidetone, meaning you don't hear yourself speaking in the earpiece. This makes every call uncomfortable. When the phone is on the base station ringing and you pick it up, it doesn't get "picked up" - you have to press a button. Likewise, hanging it up doesn't hang it up. When you press the button to talk, there's a 1-second delay before the caller can hear you, so you end up saying hello twice. Oh, let's see. The "wallpaper" backgrounds are insanely amateurish. No matter how badly you draw, you draw better than the Michelangelos who made this thing. Next: some features are configured on the screen on the base station, while some are configured with an audio interface. The distinction is random. The icons on the phone are highlighted with a movable square outline - except that some of them ARE squares, so the highlight disappears. My outgoing message is unintelligible - I had to yell into the thing, and you can still barely hear me.

This phone would be a bargain at $10, a reasonable deal at $20, a ripoff at $30. I paid $110. Not happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a phone that has it all
I had an AT & T phone, when it quit I bought another brand of answering machine and phone. Within 2 weeks I was looking for a new AT&T. They have volumes adjustments for the ringer, they have the toll saver option which is great when you check your messages and it it just a great sounding phone. I had bought a GE and had terrible results. I was told to return the phone and expect a new one in 4 weeks. What a joke. Thank goodness Amazon had AT&T.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy, great sound, decent features
I did a resasonable amount of research prior to purchasing this phone. We have owned several cordless phones over the years, different manufacturers, operating frequencies, etc. My wife and I are VERY happy with this phone (and the E580-I handset we bought to go with it). It is solid, sounds WONDERFUL, including the amazing (to me) handset-based speaker phone, and has very nice features. We don't use all of the bells and whistles, but just as a cordless phone it is the most solid and wonderful sounding phone I have ever used. The answering machine is great, easy to set up and easy to use, sounds good, time tags calls, etc. You can even listen to messages from the handset (we've done that a few times).

I agree w/ others that it would be nice to have a single call number database/memory that is shared by all handsets, but that's the only (minor) complaint I have.

Oh yes, I purchased the optional base station backup battery and our phone worked all through a recent multi-hour power failure. Nice! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good except for one critical flaw
This phone is pretty nice. It works well and has very pleasing audible tones. The menu system is nice and pretty intuitive but annoying in some areas.

But, it has one critical flaw. The remote access for the answering machine is a 2 digit number (no more), meaning that someone intent on stealing your messages could do so in 100 calls.

Worse, there's no way to turn it off; you MUST select a 2 digit number. In this age of identity theft there is no excuse for this pathetically-implemented feature.

That's what kills the phone, in my opinion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great phone except for annoying echo
Everything about this phone was just fantastic (great, easy to use phonebook, nicely placed buttons, easy to use without ever looking at the instructions, downloadable ringtones - for a fee, small base)except that for the first 5 - 10 seconds when answering any call there was an echo - like feedback. Called Panasonic (great customer service by phone, however very slow to answer email) and they had me try several things - they didn't work. They said this problem was unusual so we exchanged the phone for another. Same problem. Ended up with a Uniden TRU8885 - so far it is just as good though the buttons are smaller and not quite as convenient. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars buyer beware.....
I spent a good deal of time searching for a phone and settled on this one, purchased end of March. I do not have additional headsets so cannot comment on that.

On the plus side: Very user friendly for set up and operation. Never referred to the manual to get things going: set the time, recorded outgoing message, created password for remote access, and so on. Speakerphone (right on the handset) was tested with my critical friends on the other end of the line, and they could not tell the difference between the speakerphone and me talking directly into handset. Plus, the listener could hear me 4 feet away with no distortion or problem. The display is clear and readable, the navigation is much like a cellphone and user intuitive. It's not too weighty and feels good in the hand. Display is readable, base is simple in design, and base display is large. Footprint is very small. Amazon's speedy response when I encountered problems was definitely a plus (see below).

On the negative side: The audio on outgoing message and incoming messages is very muffled. When speaking, you cannot hear your voice at all in the same way you're accustomed to on other phones. (That's just a weird thing to become accustomed to).

On the worst side: I had the phone for a month when the display stuck on the graphic, so I couldn't access settings / address book / redial, etc. I contacted vtech online and received no answer. Contacted Amazon and they're shipping a new one free of charge --- in July.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice.
After reading reviews and consumer reports on many phones we chose the Vtech i5867 and are very dissappointed. After four months of using it we are again searching for a good phone, but this time we won't buy anything we haven't tried out first. One of the big features are that you CAN download any song of your choosing as a ring tone, but only 7 seconds of it, and then you can barely hear it when the phone rings. It saves hang ups as messages. It is often difficult to understand what someone is saying on messages. When you hear a message then push delete you often end up deleting the next message which you haven't even heard yet. When you get a call waiting call the screen doesn't light up so you can't tell who is calling in.It's nearly impossible to hold the handset between your ear and your shoulder when you're trying to write something down. And, the list goes on and on.We truly haven't really found ANY redeeming qualities to this phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best phone I've ever owned
This phone was purchased because it has all the features I wanted in a phone (and then some). Answering machine has 3 mailboxes with an audible message alert and remote access.Since this phone sits on my workstation with my computer, the number of messages is also displayed and easily seen. It is color coordinated with my computer equipment. The speakerphone is clear. You can turn the base ringer off separate from the handset ringer or have them ring simultaneously. There is a digital clock on the display screen. You can conference call. And if you have wireless extensions, you can transfer a call to another cordless handset, page a cordless handset, and use the intercom to talk between handsets. You can dial the number first then press the "ON" key (like a cell phone SEND key) or you can press the "ON" key first then dial the number. You can mute a call or put a call on hold, and it has a phonebook. I could go on and on. I never thought I could be excited about a phone (too funny)! IT IS A PHONE WITH CELL PHONE ATTRIBUTES. The manual is easy to understand too.It is the best phone I've ever owned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I read many phone reviews before choosing this phone. I realize these views are very subjective and people want different things from a home phone.I chose this because I liked the expandable option, 3 mailboxes, reportedly good sound quality, speaker phones, and thought the wallpaper and ringers would be a fun bonus.I found the image quality too fuzzy to enjoy, the ringers jarring, and the sound quality for calls and answering machine poor.I also did not like it when the base and telephones rang out of sync with each other. Also, when the phone rang the screen and backlit keys lit up with an unpleasing orange. It was too exciting for my taste. It also felt light and cheap and often required more than one push of a number key to register the number when dialing.I've been using a 2.4 GHz Panasonic which is much better quality but interferes with wireless connection. I've returned this VTech and I'm looking for something with better sound quality and less excitement when someone calls. Why are cordless phones with good sound quality so hard to find?

3-0 out of 5 stars What is correct model # for this phone?
I was reading consumer reviews on these phones and noticed that Amazon had the title listed as a 5867 but under product details it talks about a 5866. Okay, and the real model number is.......?I want to look at these in a store before I order online. Can anyone please tell me the correct model number for this phone? If both model numbers are actually in production, then I won't know which to look at.Thanks. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars False advertising
I've used this phone for about a week before returning it. It is the worst phone I've ever bought...

This phone is advertised as a 5.8GHz phone. The only reason to operate a phone at 5.8GHz is to avoid interference from microwaves and 802.11b/g. This phone operates at both 2.4GHz AND 5.8GHz, allowing you to transmit and receive interference on two bands instead of the usual one. The phone boasts 5.8GHz operation but indicates 2.4GHz in the fine print, despite the superior range of 2.4GHz.

Buttons are terrible: Seperate buttons for On and Off, and you must press two buttons to access CID. These buttons are tiny and have a fair amount of play. Answering machine "joystick" pad feels cheap and is hard to control.

Other features:CID lacks name support (you gotta memorize everyone's phone numbers). Insufficient voice feedback; (makes phone seem dead, and makes you talk too loud... maybe that's on purpose, because callers complain they can't hear me anyway due to noisy connection). Handset is uncomfortabely narrow. Uses proprietery, low-capacity (600mAh) dual-AA battery pack (quality phones let you pop in three standard 2500mAh NiMH AAs). Overpriced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in this phone
I bought this phone after quite a bit of research. I was very dissatisfied with both the audio quality of the phone itself and the performance of the answering machine. The phone had lots of background noise ( no matter where the base was located) and was much worse than my 5 year old Panasonic. The answering machine wouldn't disconnect if the caller hung up during the message playback, and would then record the 'off hook' message. Ridiculous design flaw, and no help from ATT's online customer service either. Shopping for another brand!

5-0 out of 5 stars One year review
I love this phone. I originally thought it was too expensive, but now see it is worth it. The 3 additional handsets we purchased are very durable. They have been flushed in the toilet (2 year old son), left outside in the garden (me) and "dropped" on the floor of the garage (husband), and we have not one single complaint. I love that you can buy additional handsets for various locations, my son thinks it's a fun game to hide the phone from mommy.
the battery life is excellent, better than previous panasonic, seimens, and uniden phones. we leave handsets off the hook for up to days at a time, and they will still have a charge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great performer with one minor quirk!
I got a great deal on this phone and two extra handsets and have been enormously pleased with with its performance and versatility. I don't believe there is a more rounded phone package available at a better price, and believe me, I've looked.

Since it's a 5.8GHz DSS system, I have had absolutely no interference with anything else in my home. And because each handset can be programmed independently of the others, my entire call list is installed on my handset, while my kids have their friends programmed into each of their phones. None of us has to look through long lists of people we don't know to find the people we want to call. When looking for a new phone system, I wanted to get one that had both a built-in speaker phone and an answering machine with separate mail boxes. This not only delivered, but I got a very useful bonus as well: each handset can be used as a speaker phone. Now I'm not tied to the base unit when I need to use the speaker phone.

The only gripe I have is with the answering machine. It works fine and has three mailboxes, which I wanted. However, it records a "message" every time it answers, even on hang-ups or when the caller does not actually leave a message. It's a pain to have to wade through six or seven blank messages on mail box 1 just to hear the two or three real ones. That's the reason I am giving this four stars instead of five. Other than that one quirk, it is a great phone system, and I highly recommend it for its versatility and performance.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do not like this system after one year.
Well, we've had this phone - plus 3 additional add on phones - for about one year now. Unfortunately, we're in need ofa new cordless phone set since the last AT&T phone has finally given out. BIG PROBLEM ** that is not mentioned anywhere ** is that the cap at the top of the antenna frequently pops out. We've re-glued the caps back in several times. We have small children and this is a choking hazard that we reported to AT&T.The design hasn't changed since our purchase.

These phones run out of power quickly - don't leave your phone off the charger overnight, or you'll have to wait for it to re-charge again.

Our first phones gave out after being dropped a few times - not hard or anything, just onto the floor. The design of this model is difficult to hold with your shoulder against your ear - you must use your hand -- so forget holding the baby while you're talking! After a few slips, the phones stopped working.

We killed the final extension tonight after it fell in the dish water. We actually didn't care since we hated the phone so much.

The answering machine system works, but we think the set up is complicated.Recording the outgoing message is easy enough - but there are just too many buttons for us.Also we wished there was a key pad on the base set.

We used to like AT&T products a great deal. Now, we don'tthink we got our money's worth from this system.

We would add, however, that AT&T customer service is very good and they replaced 2 phones early on due to the popping antenna caps. That service didn't really matter, since the caps popped off the new phones as well.Anyway, we give 2 stars for the good service and nothing for the lousy phones.

Good luck -- and try Panasonic! ... Read more
