5-0 out of 5 stars Great phone
I have had this phone now about 3 months and I am VERY HAPPY with it. IT has all the things and want and many more, The hand sets are very clear and I love the fact I can check voice mail on any hand set that goes with it I do not have to run to the main answering machine to check the voice mail. The range of the hand sets is great had no problem at all with this.So far I love everything with this phone, It is much better than either of the last two phone I have had.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good phone, with some funky features...
I bought this phone (plus an additional handset) to replace my old Sony 2.4GHz phone. The old phone interfered with my home WiFi network. This new phone, although it is a dual-mode phone, claims not to interfere and so far that has been the case for me.

There are a number of nice features on this phone. Both the handsets and the base station have built-in speaker phones. The answering machine is easy to program. The handsets are easy to set up with the base station (a near impossibility with my old Sonys). The phones are reasonably stylish in a utilitarian sort of way and have enough heft that you won't mind using them.

The phones and base station have LCD displays for programming. The phone has a color display and you can choose "wallpaper" for it (right...). The spare handset I bought was only black and white (I could have chosen another color handset). By default it shows a smiley face. The ringers are a bit cloying (you can set them to play music or choose from several obnoxious ring styles). Here's the digital revolution turning something simple into a needlessly complex toy.

If you ignore all the stupid bells and whistles, though, the phone does everything I ask of it. It was very easy to setup and it works well. Other brands aren't that much better in terms of "silly quotient" and don't offer the range of useful features. I would give this phone 3 1/2 stars if I could, but it's pretty good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware... it's another dual-band device
This one looked so good, so I went to Circuit City yesterday to take a look.Right on the box, it brags about using 5.8 GHz AND 2.4 GHz to provide the best performance.Seems that all the so-called 5.8 GHz devices built by V-tech, including those V-tech builds for other companies like AT&T, are dual band.Beware, if you are worried about interference to your computer wireless network. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious yet powerful
I have *fallen in love* with this phone since I bought it a week back. this is at the lower end of the panasonic 5.8ghz line of models.

These are the reasons I like the fone

* 5.8ghz which will not interrupt with my wi-fi networks
* Handset speakerphone - Very good quality
* 3-4 monotone and 3 music ringers (can be customized for callers)
* Handset light indicator - 3 colors - again can be customized for callers - Useful when you want silent option
* Excellent range and call quality

It does not have the following features

* Dual Keypad
* Ringer for base
* Answering machine
* Caller id announcement
* and some more

These do not bother me since I knew what I was buying. Obviously if you need these there are higher end panasonic models that you can go for. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
Before I bought this phone, I had a 7-year-old Toshiba 2.4GHz phone and a 7-year-old Panasonic digital answering machine. I had to replace the phone because it interfered with our wireless network, and I figured I'd get a new answering machine at the same time - 7 years later, the technology must be better, I reasoned.

Not so. The sound quality on this phone OK, but worse than on my old phone. And the sound quality of the answering machine is unacceptaby muffled. But those are the first of several big disappointments. The phone has nearly no sidetone, meaning you don't hear yourself speaking in the earpiece. This makes every call uncomfortable. When the phone is on the base station ringing and you pick it up, it doesn't get "picked up" - you have to press a button. Likewise, hanging it up doesn't hang it up. When you press the button to talk, there's a 1-second delay before the caller can hear you, so you end up saying hello twice. Oh, let's see. The "wallpaper" backgrounds are insanely amateurish. No matter how badly you draw, you draw better than the Michelangelos who made this thing. Next: some features are configured on the screen on the base station, while some are configured with an audio interface. The distinction is random. The icons on the phone are highlighted with a movable square outline - except that some of them ARE squares, so the highlight disappears. My outgoing message is unintelligible - I had to yell into the thing, and you can still barely hear me.

This phone would be a bargain at $10, a reasonable deal at $20, a ripoff at $30. I paid $110. Not happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a phone that has it all
I had an AT & T phone, when it quit I bought another brand of answering machine and phone. Within 2 weeks I was looking for a new AT&T. They have volumes adjustments for the ringer, they have the toll saver option which is great when you check your messages and it it just a great sounding phone. I had bought a GE and had terrible results. I was told to return the phone and expect a new one in 4 weeks. What a joke. Thank goodness Amazon had AT&T.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy, great sound, decent features
I did a resasonable amount of research prior to purchasing this phone. We have owned several cordless phones over the years, different manufacturers, operating frequencies, etc. My wife and I are VERY happy with this phone (and the E580-I handset we bought to go with it). It is solid, sounds WONDERFUL, including the amazing (to me) handset-based speaker phone, and has very nice features. We don't use all of the bells and whistles, but just as a cordless phone it is the most solid and wonderful sounding phone I have ever used. The answering machine is great, easy to set up and easy to use, sounds good, time tags calls, etc. You can even listen to messages from the handset (we've done that a few times).

I agree w/ others that it would be nice to have a single call number database/memory that is shared by all handsets, but that's the only (minor) complaint I have.

Oh yes, I purchased the optional base station backup battery and our phone worked all through a recent multi-hour power failure. Nice! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If you love static, buy this phone.
I have had this phone for a year and a half. It is in a room where it is rarely used. The static is terrible and changing channels doesn't help. I have used it in more than one home with no change in quality. Now I am beginning to have other problems--works in one location and not another. Buy at your own risk.

2-0 out of 5 stars STATIC
I just bought this phone 3 days ago and I have had a problem witht he static coming from the handset while the phone is one the base.It is loud and annoying.I initally liked the way the phone looked and after using it I thought it was a really good buy until the static started. It will be returned today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Intermittant static when on base!
I liked this phone until I got it home. When the handset is sitting on the base, the handset will intermittantly emit static every few seconds - CONSTANTLY.But only when its sitting on the base. I even took it to work and tried plugging it in at my desk and it did the same thing (I live in an older house and thought it might be the 50+ year old electrical - nope!)I've had it for 5 days and its going back tonight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello?
This is a great phone! We have two and my daughter loves her purple version!Buy it!

3-0 out of 5 stars skeptic
I purchased mine in May '04. So far no problems but the phone is rarely used. I was going upgrade to additional models but I think I will hold out and see how long this one lasts. I was skeptical purchasing a motorola model after working for a cellular company and motorola's answer to all phone problems was one of three things your carrier, physical damage or water damage. Like I said so far no problems, clear sound and battery lasting a good length of time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Phone!!!
I have always wondered why Cordless phones had to be so big.
Finally Uniden came out with this new line of Cordless flip phones.
I don't know why...but I seem to buy 1 new cordless phone per year.
So, I feel I'm a bit of an expert on nearly every upscale 5.8 phone on the market having tried nearly all of them.
The best thing about this Uniden, and a big surprise to me is the GREAT sound on both receiving and talking. My brother actually told my my Uniden sounds BETTER than my corded phone. The range is very good as well. My only slight criticisim is you can hear YOURSELF a bit too much in the earpiece. I do like to hear a little of my own voice in the earpiece but in my opinion Uniden messed this part up slightly. However I owned the top of the line AT&T and V TECH 5.8 phones. On those you can't hear yourself AT ALL, thru the earpiece. To me THAT was very disconcerting and I felt disconnected while speaking on these phones.
So again The Uniden's overall sound is simply THE best I've heard...
As far as a FUN/feature rich phone I can see no phone being better than this Uniden. It even has little animated animals showing you time duration of phone call etc. I LOVE the downloadable ringer faeture. You can record 20 seconds of GOOD quality sound...and make it your ringer. For me just for fun...I have a Favorite Beatle song as my ringer. You can also assign different ringers to different callers....very useful.
Another nice feature is you can upload your favorite pictures to this phone and use them for the background wallpaper.
I can go on and on...but it's ALL good news with this phone.
I don't think any cordless phone can top this phone now or in the near future. As a side note, Amazon.com is a great place to buy this product! 24 hours after placing my order this phone went on sale at Amazon. A quick note to Amazon... they adjusted my price down to the new lower price...with a very considerate letter from Cus Service. I'm a big fan of Amazon...!
Back to this Uniden...
You will LOVE this phone! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good but not perfect
I left a full review of the system under the Uniden CLX485, but I wanted to rate the handset as a standalone item.It would be a 4.5 if that was possible. It is a very slick handset with lots of great features.Plus, you can update much of the info on the base model and have it transfer to the handset, which is very convenient. The battery life is also fantastic so far (although I've only had it 1 month). It is easy to get your messages off of each handset and it is easy to page each handset as you can individually label it (basement, kids room, etc). The biggest drawbacks are the ring tones (1990 cell phones come to mind) and the range. The sound quality is fine but the range is not as good as the 2.4 GHZ.We used to be able to be down our block a decent distance without a problem, now we can barely leave the house and the phone becomes only static. Not a huge drawback as we don't take the phone outside, but it is a concern to some people.Overall, we like the handsets quite bit. 4.5 out of 5. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good quality/reasonable price
We bought this phone about 6 months ago and it's met all my expectations since then.Sound come through clearly and I enjoy the features it has - answering machine, caller ID, speakerphone, dual handsets. It was easy to set up and it's easy to program. From what we found, it was very reasonably priced considering all the features, and dual handsets makes it like 2 phones for the price of one!I'm very happy with my purchase.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dead after 3 months
I was actually quite happy with the phone regarding features and reception, until this week! Realizing that I have not heard the phone ring for a couple(?) of days, I glanced at the base unit to see if everything was alright. There I spied no lights at all glowing. I checked the outlet for power, and then the power transformer from the phone- both were working fine. Re-read the instruction manual for any reset tips, but the base unit was dead. I have 3 other Panasonic phones in the house, but this model is the first dud I have ever had from this company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal on great phone.
We've had this set for a few months now, and it works great. Always clear, never drops, works all around the house and out to the street. Handset-to-handset conference function is definitely a plus. I'd recommend to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars So Far I Love It
This phone is everything my Uniden wasn't. Easy to set up, easy to use, good sound on the handset speakerphone. I can use it out in the yard. Plus it's a little longer, so that when I hold it to my ear, the mouthpiece is near my mouth, instead of the middle of my cheek. What a concept! Also, coolness: there is a red ring-shaped LED on the top of the antenna, which lights up when you have a message on the answering machine (or when you push the "find handset" button on the base unit.) Anyway, I think it's a very good unit, I hope it lasts. My old, tank-tough Uniden lasted many years, the new Uniden replacement only lasted a few months, died twice, and the second time, Uniden wanted 48 bucks to fix it, even though it was still under warranty. To heck with that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible reception
We bought this phone system knowing that Panasonic is a decent brand, but were completely disappointed. The phones have a terrible static noise and calls fade in/out. I looked in the manual for troubleshooting tips and it suggested moving the phones away from other electric devices, which I did, but it didn't help at all.

What good are all the other great features if the basic reception is not there?

5-0 out of 5 stars Does everything its supposed to
I bought this as a reconditioned phone via an amazon re-seller.

If you have two lines at home, this is the phone for you. (Assuming you can find one).

It's sound quality is fine and given its relative complexity, it is easy to use.If it has the features you are looking for, go for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this phone
This phone will cut off your callers when they are leaving a voice-mail (see other reviews to see that this is common). It appears that it is dectecting tones in the callers voice which triggers the phone to think you are trying to access your voice mail.

Avoid this phone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad phone, poor customer service
The answering machine cuts off messages. After three months use static came on the line with each use.House telephone lines checked out; we were told phone was defective.Customer service of no use.Avoid this phone and avoid AT&T "service".

5-0 out of 5 stars AT&T 2462 Saves drowning poodle!!
Actually - No.But this phone system has been with us for over a year now, and the quality and features still impress us.Many of our clients don't recognize when they are speakerphone, and the feature-set - for a two-line phone - is impressive. The menu system for speed-dial can be a bit bothersome - but works fine, once you are used to it.One feature we would have liked to see, is a way to add 'hold music'...but this is a minor peeve.

2-0 out of 5 stars AT & T Model 2462
The voice quality is GREAT.The answering system, cuts off messages.AT&T support is terrible.Sent replacement...it failed also...sent upgrade model E2562,(with wrong remote units - which had be returned for the correct ones)...now line one is disconnected when put on hold to answer line two.It has been 10 months of dealing with a very poorly run customer service department. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars so-so product
I decided to buy the v-tech phone after reading many positive reviews, but I was unimpressed with it and decided to return it.On the plus side, the hand-set speaker-phone is handy and has fairly good sound quality, and the dual hand-sets are a nice feature. However, I found the sound quality very poor - there was often a hissing noise as well as echoing. Also, the hand-sets would run out of batteries very quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who designed this thing?
I haven't had the best of luck with phones, but this is bad even for me. This isn't a phone so much as a cruel practical joke. Perhaps a twisted experiment to see if people will pay good money to be tortured in their own homes by a small electronic device. A few of my favorite features include:

1. Poor sound quality
2. Intermittently cuts out
3. Randomly forgets numbers in memory and/or caller ID
4. Beeps loudly and incessantly whenever the battery runs low (usually around 3am)
5. Sounds the low battery alarm even while sitting in the charger!
6. Is interfered with by WiFi, baby monitors, or anything else at 2.4GHz
7. Occasionally refuses to dial phone numbers for no apparent reason
8. Did I mention the poor sound quality?

Buying this phone is a recipe for disaster. As for me, I'm going back to the tin can and string that worked so well when I was a kid.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't....
I purchased this set in October and here it is May, barely 7 mos. later and it has died.I should contact the company, in the meantime I went with GE and will give that a try. I will never ever purchase V-Tech again. It started with a stuttered dial tone and eventually we could not use it at all.We tried new batteries, re-setting the whole system - nothing worked.Fried.Major thumbs down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad...
I was an owner of the Vtech model 20-2420 with two handsets and a master base. That was until recently when my rotten cat decided to chew on the end of one of the antennas. Enter my search for a replacement. I knew I wanted the exact same phone, but realized too late that the 20-2420 was discontinued. Pricing a "like new" used/or refurbished model from a stranger didn't seem to appealing, so off I went in search of another similar V-tech model. Along came the ev2625 while on an excursion to Target. I concour that the quality of plastic used on this model is not up to par with that of the 20-2420 or similar models. However, I doubt I will engage my friends and neighbors to a blindfold test and play "which phone feels like it's made of better quality plastic". I believe that part of the low price also has to do with the fact that these phones use regular rechagable batteries, instead of the expensive nimh nicads that the other models usually come with. The phone can get a little warm when sitting in the base for long periods of time, yet I don't see any harm in leaving it off the charger overnight once in a while. Sound quality does not appear to be an issue, as I have made numerous calls from this new phone with nary a "Can you hear me now?...Good" comment. The orange hue that the phone lights up to(annoying, but will get used to) reminds me of a Pontiac Bonneville STS dashboard at night. Aside from these niggling nuances, this model has everything my other model did at almost a third the price. Score!

1-0 out of 5 stars piece of crap!
well, I've had my phone roughly two weeks and at first, it was all smooth sailing. worked well.

suddenly, after a week of use, the extension refused to let me pick up the phone when it rang--I would hear no dial tone, no friend's voice, just a beep, like a busy signal.

things worsened. crazy static started to kick in. the phone will constantly ring once, than when I try to pick up nothing. or worse, it will claim the line is in use and won't disconnect for several minutes. then--happy thing--it rings just once. as it to let you know it's done. it's starting to drive me to distraction, as I'm feeling a little like a character out some psycho-thriller movie with all this crazy ringing.

I have consulted the user's manual and the vtech site for aid in getting my phones to work. neither is much help (remove the batteries?). I've removed the batteries so many times to try and resolve this, my thumbs are sore.

I have called customer service and they are apparently closed till nine in the morning on monday. I'll try and report back with good news.

or maybe I can report about the return policy? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great accesory handset, no problems!
Excellent quality phone, has been used regularly for over a year with no problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars On their way out
I have the previous model that is the same but without the wallpaper. I have had for 2 years. I have noticed that they are losing quality of reception in certain areas of my home and that some buttons on the keypads I am not able to push.I too am having problems with the charger bases.I have two handsets and both will not fully charge and nor sit correctly in the base. Also in going to the vtech website I noticed that htese are on their way out and they are no longer making the additional handsets.I love the style though and wish I could find a similair style with the blue backlighting.I say find a more recent model.

1-0 out of 5 stars 3 strikes and you are out
Our third handset is on it's way out.3 dead in one year. The keypads go bad (buttons become hard to push, you have to use a pen) and the charging cradle also goes bad; you have to jiggle it just right to get it to charge. All in all the worst phones I have ever purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent accessory handset
I have bought 3 of these handsets and they all work great. No interference with my wireless network as many have reported w/ base system. Downloading pictures and sound clips to the phone is very easy (simple software worked perfectly) and fun (not great quality but what do you expect). Reception on all 3 is very good with 50 number storage and intercom/speakerphone features on each phone. In summary these phones are user friendly and do what they claim.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool Phone
I like this phone. The reception is just as good as the regular LCD version. The pictures on the phone are not as clear they appear on the box, but they are still good. The downloadable ringtones only lasts for about 10 seconds or so and then that ten seconds of clip is repeated until phone is answered or the caller hangs up.It is easy to use and the instruction manual is helpful. All in all, I like it and I plan on keeping it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars buyer beware.....
I spent a good deal of time searching for a phone and settled on this one, purchased end of March. I do not have additional headsets so cannot comment on that.

On the plus side: Very user friendly for set up and operation. Never referred to the manual to get things going: set the time, recorded outgoing message, created password for remote access, and so on. Speakerphone (right on the handset) was tested with my critical friends on the other end of the line, and they could not tell the difference between the speakerphone and me talking directly into handset. Plus, the listener could hear me 4 feet away with no distortion or problem. The display is clear and readable, the navigation is much like a cellphone and user intuitive. It's not too weighty and feels good in the hand. Display is readable, base is simple in design, and base display is large. Footprint is very small. Amazon's speedy response when I encountered problems was definitely a plus (see below).

On the negative side: The audio on outgoing message and incoming messages is very muffled. When speaking, you cannot hear your voice at all in the same way you're accustomed to on other phones. (That's just a weird thing to become accustomed to).

On the worst side: I had the phone for a month when the display stuck on the graphic, so I couldn't access settings / address book / redial, etc. I contacted vtech online and received no answer. Contacted Amazon and they're shipping a new one free of charge --- in July.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice.
After reading reviews and consumer reports on many phones we chose the Vtech i5867 and are very dissappointed. After four months of using it we are again searching for a good phone, but this time we won't buy anything we haven't tried out first. One of the big features are that you CAN download any song of your choosing as a ring tone, but only 7 seconds of it, and then you can barely hear it when the phone rings. It saves hang ups as messages. It is often difficult to understand what someone is saying on messages. When you hear a message then push delete you often end up deleting the next message which you haven't even heard yet. When you get a call waiting call the screen doesn't light up so you can't tell who is calling in.It's nearly impossible to hold the handset between your ear and your shoulder when you're trying to write something down. And, the list goes on and on.We truly haven't really found ANY redeeming qualities to this phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best phone I've ever owned
This phone was purchased because it has all the features I wanted in a phone (and then some). Answering machine has 3 mailboxes with an audible message alert and remote access.Since this phone sits on my workstation with my computer, the number of messages is also displayed and easily seen. It is color coordinated with my computer equipment. The speakerphone is clear. You can turn the base ringer off separate from the handset ringer or have them ring simultaneously. There is a digital clock on the display screen. You can conference call. And if you have wireless extensions, you can transfer a call to another cordless handset, page a cordless handset, and use the intercom to talk between handsets. You can dial the number first then press the "ON" key (like a cell phone SEND key) or you can press the "ON" key first then dial the number. You can mute a call or put a call on hold, and it has a phonebook. I could go on and on. I never thought I could be excited about a phone (too funny)! IT IS A PHONE WITH CELL PHONE ATTRIBUTES. The manual is easy to understand too.It is the best phone I've ever owned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I read many phone reviews before choosing this phone. I realize these views are very subjective and people want different things from a home phone.I chose this because I liked the expandable option, 3 mailboxes, reportedly good sound quality, speaker phones, and thought the wallpaper and ringers would be a fun bonus.I found the image quality too fuzzy to enjoy, the ringers jarring, and the sound quality for calls and answering machine poor.I also did not like it when the base and telephones rang out of sync with each other. Also, when the phone rang the screen and backlit keys lit up with an unpleasing orange. It was too exciting for my taste. It also felt light and cheap and often required more than one push of a number key to register the number when dialing.I've been using a 2.4 GHz Panasonic which is much better quality but interferes with wireless connection. I've returned this VTech and I'm looking for something with better sound quality and less excitement when someone calls. Why are cordless phones with good sound quality so hard to find?

3-0 out of 5 stars What is correct model # for this phone?
I was reading consumer reviews on these phones and noticed that Amazon had the title listed as a 5867 but under product details it talks about a 5866. Okay, and the real model number is.......?I want to look at these in a store before I order online. Can anyone please tell me the correct model number for this phone? If both model numbers are actually in production, then I won't know which to look at.Thanks. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Phone
I have this phone and all of it's features are good, but the phone itself is TERRIBLE!There is so much static on the line I find myself walking upstairs to switch phones in the middle of a conversation. The instructions suggest you change channels if you incur static - have yet to find a channel that does not have static!

3-0 out of 5 stars Works great except poor display
For me this phone performs flawlessly as advertised. My problem is the displays on the handsets are tiny and poorly designed and difficult to read. The actual text display is buried so far behind the plastic lens that the lighting has to be just so to read it without glare.Theere is a helpful backlight on these displays but the light goes off after a few seconds. My vision is not what it was and I cannot use this phone without eye glasses. By the time I focus on the display the light goes off and I'm dancing around the room looking for a lamp. I know it's impossible to please everyone with these gizmos but if I was shopping for another phone I'd buy the one with the biggest display. If you can easily read newsprint in a dark room you're going to love this phone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice features, Poor sound quality
I'm on a quest to find a cordless phone with decent features and excellent sound quality.I was hoping my search would end with the Panasonic KX-TG2356S, but unfortunately I'll have to keep looking. The phone is attractive and has a lot of nice features, but I'll be returning it due to the following shortcomings:
1) I hear my voice echoing when I speak.
2) The handset volume is too low. Even on the loudest setting, it is difficult to hear the other person.
3) Low level of static at all times.I run a test where I get a dial tone, then press the 1 key and listen for static.
4) All audio from the phone has a very high pitched, trebly, shrill sound quality. This includes the answering machine, dial tone, and the voice of people you speak to.

There are a few other things I don't like about the phone. There are pretty minor, but worth mentioning:
5) Handset doesn't always recognize it has been placed on the base.Sometimes have to jiggle the handset to get it to charge.
6) The answering machine doesn't light up the # of messages it has, which makes it difficult to read. The number is usually a red LED on other answering machines. (If there are new messages, the Play button flashes, which is nice).
7) Handset is not very comfortable after holding it against your ear for 15 or so minutes. This is noticeable because you have to push it so tight against your ear to hear anything since the volume is so low.

I can forgive most shortcomings of the phone, but not poor sound quality. The phone is pretty expensive; I expected more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful battery - Handset dies within 10 minutes
I am a great fan of Panasonic phones but this is a very bad buy. Battery dies within 10 minutes you initiate the conversation.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT A QUALITY PHONE
I purchased this phone last year and so did an aunt of mine.I really like the fact that the phone announces the caller, and that is the ONLY reason I have not tossed the phone.People complain they can't always hear me...even worse when i use voice enhance button...I have a very old sony that has 10 times the clarity of this phone and I use that as my main phone. Forget talking if the microwave is on! I also have trouble with clarity if I use it near the computer. My aunt has all the same gripes about her phone and when we call each other the quality is super bad...I didn't even know she had the same phone until some time later! I'll let you know the next phone I get, probably a sony...p.s. I paid 128.00 at Costco. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

This innovative cordless telephone operates on the powerful 5.8 GHz frequency. Its classic design provides comfort and ease of use. Advanced features include adjustable sound settings, the ability to use up to six handsets, a speakerphones in the handset, and a duplex speakerphone in the base. (Duplex technology lets both parties talk and be heard simultaneously.)

The dual-band (5.8 GHz/2.4 GHz) design allows the base unit to transmit with more power in the 5.8 GHz frequency band or with greater efficiency at 2.4 GHz. The phone's true duplex transmission keeps the incoming and outgoing signals from interfering with each other.

The LCD on the handset provides caller ID/call waiting information (subscription required though your local phone company). The 5830 also provides talking caller ID, which announces the name or number of incoming callers.

The 5830's expandability, up to five additional handsets for a total of six, eliminates the need to hard-wire multiple extensions throughout your home. One phone jack and one power outlet is all you need to connect the 5830 base station and handset, while each additional model 5800 handset requires only a power outlet for its compact charger/cradle. Calls can be transferred from one handset to another.

The handset receiver lights up with incoming calls and can also be set to vibrate. It stores 50 names and numbers and works with your caller ID service to remember the last 50 callers. Sound Select lets you adjust bass, treble, and midrange to your liking. A spare-battery charging system enables the telephone to work even during a power outage. Choose from eight ringer melodies. The system is backed by a one-year warranty.

2-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient range
The AT&T 5.8 ghz cordless expandable phones are nice, but don't have enough range for a large house.

If range is what you need, save yourself the time and trouble and get the Panasonic. Over the past month (August 2004) I have tried the latest models of just about every major brand that offers 5.8 ghz multi-handset cordless phones - Uniden, V-Tech, AT&T (made by V-Tech), Motorola, and Panasonic. Each of these phones is nice in its own way, but only the Panasonic had enough range to receive and send clearly from one end of the house to the other. Granted my house is big (3,600 square feet, all on one level), but the other brands maxed out about 2/3rds of the way through the house. I have a WiFi network in the house, and had no interference issues from that with any of these brands. I do wish the Panasonic could expand to a total of more than just 4 handsets, but that is a minor issue. Those big honking twin antennae on the base unit seem to actually work. Please note that I tried the versions withoutanswering machines,so I can't offer any opinions on that part of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Have NEVER Been This Happy With A Cordless Phone
Before I begin my review of the BEST cordless phone I have ever used, I thought some fun facts were in order...

1876 Telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell (believe it or not, the fax machine was invented ~15 years prior to this)
1913 AT&T becomes a government sanctioned monopoly
1946 AT&T begins offering mobile telephone service (this is true!)
1958 AT&T starts selling modems (almost a decade before DARPA creates the internet and more than a quarter century before consumers have access to the WWW)
1984 AT&T is torpedoed by Judge Green's Modified Final Judgement (MFJ) -- this effectively ushers in competetition which drives innovation, and lower prices
2000 AT&T still hasn't woken up to the reality of MFJ (i.e., it's break-up) and is charging rates as high as 35 CPM for domestic calls to more than 20 million of it subscribers
2003 With the introduction of the 5800 series phones, and a new residential VoIP offer, AT&T starts to signal to main street and wall street that it is willing to wake up to the realities of today's marketplace

But you don't need to know the above to appreciate what is, in my opinion, the BEST cordless phone on the market (and I have tried many!).Here's the deal with the AT&T 5800 series...
+ Uses 5.8 Ghtz band and "Frequency Hopping Technology" to eliminate static and security issues
+ Awesome speakerphone on the base station
+ Ergonomics of the unit are unsurpassed
+ Each handset has a speakerphone built into it -- while these speakerphones are not as crisp as the one on the base station, they come in handy when interfacing with those annoying recorded menus that most companies are using today
+ All units include visibile message waiting indication (great for those with voice mail)
+ The unit just feels substantial (they have the sturdy feel of AT&T's old Western Electric produced phones that felt like they could drive rail road spikes)
+ Expansion handsets don't require RJ11 jacks to get dial-tone, they use the house wiring and they also auto-seek the base unit to simplify set-up and intercom signaling
+ For convenience, calls can be transferred from one handset to another
+ Base unit will "speak" the caller ID information -- this is especially convenient for those frequent times that you can't angle around to see the caller ID display

There are some light cons to...
+ The voice mail waiting indication light is so bright (and it blinks) that it has woken me up at nights (the only way to turn it off is to clear voice mail messages)
+ The 5800 series isn't so much a phone as it is a whole house phone system, as a result of this and the EXTREMELY high quality of the product, it is a little more expensive than the 5.8 Ghtz offerings from it's competition -- my opinion is that the extra ten or twenty bucks is well worth it

And I thought the following would be helpful as well...
1) In the past, most cordless phone providers made outrageous claims regarding the range or distance the handset could travel from the base station (AT&T makes no claims with this unit) -- wise shoppers should expect no more than 250 ft of range with the 5800 series
2) For those using the new VoIP technology to save on phone service (e.g. Vonage, Packet8, BroadVoice, Phonom, etc.), this system provides an excellent solution to the whole house wiring problems that these types of services tend to create

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a phone that sounds ok
I've read dozens of reviews and have even purchased several different models including the VTEC T2426 2.4GHZ & 5381 5.8GHZ.It is amazing how bad the sound quality was for every phone I tried, perhaps due to my wi-fi network. While this ATT model is basically the same phone as the VTech 5.8 (with the addition of talking caller id) it does not have any of the crackling that the VTech had.I think I have finally found a phone I can live with. A key factor for me is the voicemail indicator as I tend to let messages sit for days. Now I can't see how I could live without that flashing light.I can't say that I am particularly fond of ATT, but if you want to avoid the mild headaches associated with returning annoying phones, this is the one for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good sound quality, but the designers could have done better
The first thing you should know is this: This is a very good phone. It feels solid, its sound quality is great, the intercom works well, and it won't interfere with your WiFi network. My bet is that if you care enough to read to the end of this review, you should just buy it-- it's what you're looking for.And if the rest of this review seems overly focused on minutia, that's a result of frustration over the Phone That Might Have Been, more than criticism of The Phone That Is.

So, it's a good phone. But come on: some of the design decisions are just plain weird.

First, there's the oddity that while there's an indicator light for your (phone-company-supplied) voicemail, there's no easy way to actually dial that voicemail number and retrieve your messages.Rather than have a one-touch button, the phone requires that you assign voicemail to one of the phone-book entries. No big deal... except that it means you're pressing a minimum of three buttons (and likely more) every time you want to get your messages.

Then there's the omission of a "this is my own area code" feature. This means that all caller-ID numbers show up as (and get dialed as) 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX numbers... which can mean long-distance charges for local calls on some systems.Yes, you can edit the number, but it requires three clicks.

Lastly, there are the set of weird behaviors that come from having the built-in base-station speakerphone not know anything about the base-station phone handset. This means, forinstance, that if you answer a call using the base-station speakerphone, you can't just then pick up the base-station handset and have the call automatically transfer.Instead, both units will be active, which means you need to hang up two separate phones.

All of these are nits, but in a system costing this much, they're silly.

So should you buy it?Yes, sure: it does most of the basics well; the quality feels high; the backup battery feature will come in handy in a power-failure (though battery is sold separately); and 5.8 Ghz is the future. But don't expect perfection... and do send "you can do better" thought waves towards the folks who designed this unit.

PS-- An equally small nit about the extension handsets: their a/c adapters don't detach from their recharging bases. That means you need an extension cord if your desk has one of those holes to thread cords through-- the adapter likely won't fit through to reach the outlet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
I probably over-researched phones, and this one came up with the best ratings/reviews.We've had it now for a few weeks, and it is the best cordless we've ever owned.Superb sound quality, features are plentiful, and the talking caller ID is pretty cool.
Haven't really tested the range beyond the confines of our house, it being winter and all.I also bought the 5800 handset for use upstairs, and it works just as well 1 & 2 floors up.
This replaced my VTech 2400 because I ended up installing a wireless LAN just after buying the phone, and was having problems with the 2.4GHz interference.Be aware that this phone does transmit from phone-to-base in the 2.4G range, but I have not had any issues with it like I did the VT 2400. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars False advertising
I've used this phone for about a week before returning it. It is the worst phone I've ever bought...

This phone is advertised as a 5.8GHz phone. The only reason to operate a phone at 5.8GHz is to avoid interference from microwaves and 802.11b/g. This phone operates at both 2.4GHz AND 5.8GHz, allowing you to transmit and receive interference on two bands instead of the usual one. The phone boasts 5.8GHz operation but indicates 2.4GHz in the fine print, despite the superior range of 2.4GHz.

Buttons are terrible: Seperate buttons for On and Off, and you must press two buttons to access CID. These buttons are tiny and have a fair amount of play. Answering machine "joystick" pad feels cheap and is hard to control.

Other features:CID lacks name support (you gotta memorize everyone's phone numbers). Insufficient voice feedback; (makes phone seem dead, and makes you talk too loud... maybe that's on purpose, because callers complain they can't hear me anyway due to noisy connection). Handset is uncomfortabely narrow. Uses proprietery, low-capacity (600mAh) dual-AA battery pack (quality phones let you pop in three standard 2500mAh NiMH AAs). Overpriced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in this phone
I bought this phone after quite a bit of research. I was very dissatisfied with both the audio quality of the phone itself and the performance of the answering machine. The phone had lots of background noise ( no matter where the base was located) and was much worse than my 5 year old Panasonic. The answering machine wouldn't disconnect if the caller hung up during the message playback, and would then record the 'off hook' message. Ridiculous design flaw, and no help from ATT's online customer service either. Shopping for another brand!

5-0 out of 5 stars One year review
I love this phone. I originally thought it was too expensive, but now see it is worth it. The 3 additional handsets we purchased are very durable. They have been flushed in the toilet (2 year old son), left outside in the garden (me) and "dropped" on the floor of the garage (husband), and we have not one single complaint. I love that you can buy additional handsets for various locations, my son thinks it's a fun game to hide the phone from mommy.
the battery life is excellent, better than previous panasonic, seimens, and uniden phones. we leave handsets off the hook for up to days at a time, and they will still have a charge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great performer with one minor quirk!
I got a great deal on this phone and two extra handsets and have been enormously pleased with with its performance and versatility. I don't believe there is a more rounded phone package available at a better price, and believe me, I've looked.

Since it's a 5.8GHz DSS system, I have had absolutely no interference with anything else in my home. And because each handset can be programmed independently of the others, my entire call list is installed on my handset, while my kids have their friends programmed into each of their phones. None of us has to look through long lists of people we don't know to find the people we want to call. When looking for a new phone system, I wanted to get one that had both a built-in speaker phone and an answering machine with separate mail boxes. This not only delivered, but I got a very useful bonus as well: each handset can be used as a speaker phone. Now I'm not tied to the base unit when I need to use the speaker phone.

The only gripe I have is with the answering machine. It works fine and has three mailboxes, which I wanted. However, it records a "message" every time it answers, even on hang-ups or when the caller does not actually leave a message. It's a pain to have to wade through six or seven blank messages on mail box 1 just to hear the two or three real ones. That's the reason I am giving this four stars instead of five. Other than that one quirk, it is a great phone system, and I highly recommend it for its versatility and performance.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do not like this system after one year.
Well, we've had this phone - plus 3 additional add on phones - for about one year now. Unfortunately, we're in need ofa new cordless phone set since the last AT&T phone has finally given out. BIG PROBLEM ** that is not mentioned anywhere ** is that the cap at the top of the antenna frequently pops out. We've re-glued the caps back in several times. We have small children and this is a choking hazard that we reported to AT&T.The design hasn't changed since our purchase.

These phones run out of power quickly - don't leave your phone off the charger overnight, or you'll have to wait for it to re-charge again.

Our first phones gave out after being dropped a few times - not hard or anything, just onto the floor. The design of this model is difficult to hold with your shoulder against your ear - you must use your hand -- so forget holding the baby while you're talking! After a few slips, the phones stopped working.

We killed the final extension tonight after it fell in the dish water. We actually didn't care since we hated the phone so much.

The answering machine system works, but we think the set up is complicated.Recording the outgoing message is easy enough - but there are just too many buttons for us.Also we wished there was a key pad on the base set.

We used to like AT&T products a great deal. Now, we don'tthink we got our money's worth from this system.

We would add, however, that AT&T customer service is very good and they replaced 2 phones early on due to the popping antenna caps. That service didn't really matter, since the caps popped off the new phones as well.Anyway, we give 2 stars for the good service and nothing for the lousy phones.

Good luck -- and try Panasonic! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Major recall now!!
This phone was a true disappointment and a stain on the Panasonic brand image.

I owned and used this phone for a little over one year before finally giving up.Two things did this phone in: sound quality and battery life.

Off the gate, the sound quality was poor.Within a 200 sq ft room where the base station was, I got dead spots.I also got callers complaining that I sounded very faint, cut in and out, and that I sound like I was on a cell phone with bad connection.

The deal breaker was the awful battery life.I believe there is a faulty handset design. The handset lost charge faster and faster as time went on.It simply would not hold charge. And yes, I spent $20 and bought a new battery and got the same result. When I can't get through an one-hour conference call on a fully charged handset without the phone dropping dead after 45 min, that was it.

I called and e-mailed Panasonic about this and got the generic-- "reset the base station for sound quality problem and reset the handset for the charge problem".They were of no use.

I plunk down the money on a 5.8GHz thinking so that it will not interfere with my wireless LAN and got this lemon.I gave it one star for its speaker phone and mute functionalities.FWIW, I now have a 2.4GHz (KX-TG2431).One month in, everything works great.Battery life is excellent, no dead spots anywhere, and no interference with my wireless LAN.And it's much cheaper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent phone
It seems to work like it's supposed to.The only thing I don't like about it is, it just doesn't have the range that I thought it would have. In my case, about 50 ft.Not much farther than that or if I move slightly when I'm talking at that distance, it goes in and out.One other thing, when you call the phone from another phone number, the answering machine voice isn't very loud no matter how close I get to it when I'm recording an outgoing message. It's loud enough to hear a message that someone left, but of all the phones I have had in the past, this one has the lowest answering machine volume when a person calling is listening to the recorded message. All in all, I'm satisfied.I guess I was expecting a bit more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lasts for about 6 months... horrible
I paid top dollar for this phone as i can't stand how poorly made cordless phones can be. I believed that if I paid more, than somehow I would get a better phone! Whatever...

Please don't buy this phone - the VTech (which I had previously) is far superior. The battery life on both phones is utterly ridiculous. I have owned this phone for 6 months and already I can't talk for more than 15 minutes (which, for my business is a must) without racing to give out my cell as the phone was about to die. One of them is completely worthless and won't hold a charge, the other lasts for 15 minutes. Panasonic should be ashamed - I wasted my money on this.

The features work as they should however, so I can't complain there (thus the 2 stars). What good is it though if the phones don't work?

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
I have had this phone system with two handsets for over 6 months. The sound quality is horrible. All my callers complain about it.The display on one handset already does not work.

I am very disappointed in this phone system.I have always had a very high opinion of Panasonic products but not anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Phone
This Phone works great. I have it for two weeks and I'm very happy with it. ... Read more
