Not perfect but better than most
I have been teaching math for a few years and have had more trouble with sharpeners than students.I was going through several sharpeners a year.I was comfortable spending 20is dollars at Wal-Mart(where America shops for value).I was getting about 6 months out of each sharpener.This Boston School Pro is much better.While more expensive, it has lasted 2 and a half years.I have had trouble getting new blades and feel that I will never, I end up saving money in the long run.I was spending $60 plus every two and a half years and now spend $30 every two and a half.If Texas will get it's act together and give teachers the raise they were talking about I might be able to cover my pencil sharpener budget.

Poor quality, doesn't last, no service after the sale
I'm a middle school teacher and bought two of these on the advice of a colleague.Both broke down before the end of the year.So did the two my colleague bought.It turned out she hadn't used one before but was taken by the imposing hero shot of the sharpener.

The company was completely unresponsive to the several phone messages I left.

A hand sharpener works better in the long run.Don't waste your money.

Great Sharpener
I am a teacher, and needed a new sharpener after my manual one for my class room busted. I used this sharpener many times, and it did very well. It stopped sharpening right when it was perfect. I have a student, and whenever she sharpens her pencils, she pushes so hard, it jams the sharpener. She keeps it in a jammed position for periods of time. It seems as if she finds the sound of the motor struggling entertaining. She many times made it overheat. She recently burned the motor out, I am not sure what happend to the thermal protection. This is truly a great sharpener, although I can't tell you how long it will last, so I will only give it 4 stars

Very Disappointed Teacher
Only buy this pencil sharpener if you want to replace it each year.The sharpener worked very well until the end of the school year and then the blades became dull and would not sharpen the pencils.Hunt Company replaced the blades under warranty.Now that the warranty has expired, they refuse to replace the blades and won't sell the blade replacements. What a shame that electric pencil sharpeners are supposed to be disposable!

best pen ever for notetaking
Previously, these pens seemed unavailable in the US. I even tried special ordering them from my stationery story. I would always pick up a set every time I visited Europe.

As an aspiring academic, who takes lots of notes, and a connoisseur of pens since the Pilot Precise revolutionized disposable pens, I have to say the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner is the best that I have found.

best colored pens ever !!
I can't speak highly enough of these colored pens, made by Staedtler.They are reasonably priced and wonderfully designed.They write very smoothly, the ink lasts and lasts, even if you have left the cap off for days.The colors are bright, the tip is narrow enough that you can write between the lines, and the choice of colors is wonderful.The storage case is also very well designed.I've attached mine to my desk to make the pens easily accessible.Finally, the pens are very lightweight, compact, and have a triangular shape that makes them easy to hold. I have only the 10-pen set right now, so I am looking forward to getting the 20-pen set.Thanks to Staedtler for coming up with a wonderful product!

BEST PENS EVER -- GREAT FOR NOTE-TAKING
These are FANTASTIC pens. Especially for the obsessive-compulsive note-taker type - i.e. the medical student, or pre-med student.

The case doubles as a stand-up pen stand, and is solid and difficult to destroy.

The color selection is excellent, and I only have a ten-pack.

They glide beautifully, and have lasted through many pages of ridiculous note-taking.

Staedtler claims you can leave the pens open for "days" without them drying out -- I've only tested them for a few hours at a time, and they're great!

$14.95 is a very good price for a set of 20, depending upon shipping of course.

My only complaint is that the pens are slightly small to hold -- which is great for compact storage, but not so good for hand-cramps -- the triangular barrel shape helps alleviate the problem to a significant extent though.

Now, IF ONLY I COULD FIND THEM FOR SALE SOMEWHERE AGAIN!!!!

I Like the Equipment, But Wish for Better Instructions
I'm an absolute beginner, so I bought this kit because I thought it looked like a good value.I still think it was--I like the wide variety of colors of ink cartridges, and the three different nib sizes provides some variety, too.

My big complaint is with the instruction book.The font is so tiny--I would guess it's smaller than 8--that it's very difficult to read.The text is offered in multiple languages, so I guess they were looking to conserve space. There are only 4 or 5 sample alphabets, and a couple of sample phrases, such as "Thank You," or "You're Invited," to practice.Several of the alphabets are Gothic looking, and I wanted something lighter for invitations, place cards, scrapbooking, etc.--so I will probably have to shell out for a separate book with more options.

If you have any experience with calligraphy at all, the instruction book won't be an issue for you--you probably won't have to look at it.However, if you are a beginner, the equipment in this set is more than enough to get you started, but you might want some other instructional resources.

a bit disappointing, but not bad for the price
I'm a raw beginner when it comes to calligraphy, so I was looking for a starter kit that included nibs in different sizes.I picked the Sheaffer set of seven because it had gotten a couple of favorable reviews, and because Sheaffer is a reputable name.

I'm not thrilled with what I got.I do appreciate the fact that there are three pen bodies, because I don't have to swap out nibs whenever I want to work in a different size.Another positive is the excellent selection of colored ink cartridges--everything from hot pink through purple.However, they didn't always puncture easily and cleanly, which contributed to ink flow problems.The nibs aren't helping much there, either.The fine one is okay, but the medium and broad nibs are chronically irregular, so it's nearly impossible to get even lines.My other complaint about the nibs is that they're all too thin.Beginners are best off making big letters to learn, and none of these nibs is broad enough to make a well-proportioned letter more than 3/4" high, max.

The pens have comfortable rubber grips.They're quite a bit lighter than what I like in a good pen, but I hardly paid as much as I would for a good fountain pen--and besides weight and balance are a matter of personal preference.So overall this kit was a mixed bag.It's not as good as I might have liked, but it was so inexpensive that I probably shouldn't be so critical.Still, I'd suggest that instead of buying this, you check out your local art supply store.You should be able to find high-quality nibs and holders from Brause or Speedball, and won'tpay more than this.

The Calligraphy kit
This calligraphy kit is very nice, and works very well on invitations and other fancy things.However, some of the colors are a little light, and so you cannot see it on the paper. Overall, this calligraphy kit is great for many uses and deserves four stars.

Good Set for New as Well as Experienced Calligraphers
While I am not a beginner at calligraphy, I bought the large set with three pens, three nibs, and cartridges in assorted colors simply because it was such a good value. On the plus side, these are standard Sheaffer fountain pens that take standard "classic" Sheaffer fountain pen cartridges and other standard Sheaffer nibs. The jewel-toned plastic pen barrels are lightweight, attractive, and easy to hold. Two quality control issues: the fine-point nib in my set has very poor ink flow, although the other two work beautifully.(Poor ink flow can be discouraging, especially to the beginner.)Oddly, in this set the color of the cartridge did not necessarily coincide with the color of the ink inside--for example, both the purple and the dark blue cartridges contained black ink. Right to the point
I've run my Panasonic KP-4A sharpener for nearly a decade, with nary a hitch. It chisels keen points quickly, with a little accompanying noise that wouldn't be disturbing in most situations. In fact, the pitch tells you when the sharpening is achieved. Seems unbreakable to me, as long as one does not force pencils downward--just hold them steady and in 5 seconds, the job's done. Its sleek, compact, cordless design works on any desktop.

Great sharpening BUT broke after 10 pencils
I bought two sharpeners. I sharpened about ten pencils with the first one (excellent sharpening while it lasted), and something "let go" inside. The motor ran but the rotating blade had no more power - as soon as I pressed the pencil into the blade it would stop turning while the motor continued running freely.

I unwrapped the second sharpener to see if it would hold up better. Again, after about 10 pencils, exactly the same thing happened.

When I disassembled one of them to analyze the failure, I discovered that a crucial area of the plastic gear that drives the blade mechanism was stripped away so that the gear was spinning practically freely. It was unable to drive the blade mechanism with any significant strength.

Conclusion: This product is potentially an excellent pencil sharpener but it has a major design weakness in its drive train. I only put one star on this review because zero stars is not available.

Excellent sharpener
I use this on high-quality colored art pencils. They are very soft and shatter on ordinary pencil sharpeners with blades. This sharpener uses gears instead of a blade and sharpens at the same angle as other sharpeners that use gears (those with blades sharpen at a different angle). This is a replacement for my first one which lasted ~10 years and saved me ~$100 worth of pencils (these pencils are about a dollar each). I will not use another style.

The Best Pencil Sharpener
The Panasonic KP-4A is the best (yes, best) portable pencil sharpener I have ever seen. I have owned a few in the past, and they never worked very well; they were loud, cut crudely and broke the lead about half the time. The KP-4A cuts better than many desktop shapeners- and I mean better. It is loud, but no more than other models and its sound is more of a mechanical hum than a grinding roar. I would definetely buy this if you ever have situations where you need to write but might not by near a sharpener.I highly recommend this product, and, for its price, why not? :-)

NOTE: If you would need to use this in really quite environments- don't. No portable electric one will be quiet enough so you'll need a manual one. ... Read more
