Just an average mechanical pencil
When I get pencils, normally what I do is look for the ones that are the cheapest per pencil. I prefer mechanical ones because they never need sharpening, and never grow uncomfortably small. I also like .7 lead because it tends to break less than the thinner leads. What brand of pencils doesn't matter, as long as the pencils are refillable. These pencils are refillable mechanical pencils with .7 lead. They come with three sticks of lead already in them. The eraser works well. It leaves no smudges, and erases easily. As for the grip, I guess I could say that it makes writing more comfortable, but if it does, I have yet to notice it. The grip doesn't really do anything for me, but I don't dislike it either.It is just there (but if I wanted I could take it off). The only problem I have with this pencil is one I've had with every mechanical pencil; when I use up all of the eraser, I can't put lead in easily anymore. To put more lead in I have to feed it in through the tip.Other than that, I can't see any reason to dislike these pencils. They work well and give me no reason to complain.

Best mechanical pencil out there
If you're tired of cheap mechanical pencils that break, lead that breaks, erasers that are wimpy, hard to adjust or replace, etc., then look no further.I am a science teacher who uses these pencils every day.This model is a perfect design.It has a strong metal tip that's threaded on.The eraser is the thick, white vinyl type that never smears or dries out, and it retracts/extends by a simple twist of the barrel.Eraser replacement couldn't be easier - the bulb end just pops in and out.You can store 6-8 leads in the barrel.I like the .9mm lead that rarely breaks, but it's available in .5mm and .7mm also.I've been using this model EVERY DAY for two years! ... Pencil for Rite in the Rain
While these may not be the world's best mechanical pencil, they work great a field pencils.They are great for Rite in the Rain paper - can get wet.You can even use them with DuraRite paper and take then underwater.You don't have to worry about salt killing them because they are cheap and you don't need a pencil sharpener.

Wood pencils often get soft in the water.

My favorite pencil
I've been using the Paper Mate Sharpwriter Non-refillable Mechanical Pencil for many years. It's the only one I use. I hate regular wood pencils and I don't like those expensive refillable pencils either. I also don't like any mechanical pencil where you click the eraser part to bring out more 'lead'. For example, I tried one by BIC with the clicky eraser and I hated it including how it felt in my hand. I like the twist mechanism of the Paper Mate Sharpwriter the best. Twist it in for travel and twist it back out again for use. Perfect. I also like this pencil because it's not heavy and the outside is rounded and smooth which doesn't hurt my fingers.

I don't abuse things I own, so I never have trouble with my pencils breaking on the inside. I have nothing bad to say about this pencil, it's great just the way it is. It's affordable, easy to use, and as with any mechanical pencil, it's always sharp. I love having a pencil that is always ready to use and this one is better than all others I have tried.

I prefer the wood pencils to these...
While these mechanical pencils have some advantages over a regular pencil, they are not what I would recommend. The reason behind this is that they are not refillable, and, with the ones I had, the lead would occasionally break inside the pencil, and I would have to throw the pencil away. The refillable pencils are better because they can be reused over and over, these have to be thrown out when they run out of lead. Another thing that I don't like about these is the method of lead advancement. To advance the lead, you have to twist the tip where the lead comes out. After using other mechanical pencils, I became used to pushing on the end for more lead, and got frustrated when this technique didn't work on these pencils. These pencils do have the advantage over regular wood pencils of not having to be sharpened, but I think I prefer wood pencils to these.

Fabulous ... until it runs out of lead.
I use mechanical pencils for the same reason I use fountain pens: because our obsession with disposable everything is bad for the planet. Why not refill and re-use? A friend from work gave me one of these and I fell in love with the way it writes, the way it feels in the hand, and its classic old-school good looks. HOWEVER. I have not been able to find refills for either the lead OR the eraser, even though the eraser appears to have been specifically designed to pop out and replace. Looking at the design, it appears that the lead is not even refillable. So while this is a great pencil while it lasts, it should more accurately be sold as a DISPOSABLE mechanical pencil. And you can't even recycle it! My recommendation: if you're just going to throw it away when you're done with it, use a regular wood pencil. At least it's compostable.

Got to love them...
Why write a review for a pencil that costs less than 50 cents per piece .. you may ask. Of all the things in your life, pencils may be least of things that you are picky. I bought a pack in a nearby OfficeDepot store few months back and I simply adore the design, build and the usability of this little piece. The auto eject works well all the time and does not eject more than necessary. No wastage .. no twisting & clicking. Has a good feel and very light.
